Paco's is not your one stop taco shop, but damn, I'd never thought the day would come where I crave chicharrón tacos, but it's 2019. We still have an orange man in the oval office and here I am, craving chicharrón tacos. I guess crazy shit can happen.
I had been confusing Paco's with another spot for years. I kept saying "yeah, it's ok, nothing amazing" and once I realized my mistake, we made it more of a priority to check them out. The steak was underwhelming. In fact, I only ordered it a second time because I thought maybe I unfairly judged it, but I've definitely had better steak and while it's been better the 2nd and 3rd time, it's easily a taco I won't order anymore. The barbacoa is also one I'm going to pass on going forward. Barbacoa is definitely one of those meats where I either love it or hate it, and with the boyfriend making some bomb barbacoa and having other taco spots closer to home, Paco's can keep it. The al pastor is ok. It's not bad, but it's not my favorite, either. I always like to get a chicken taco, because I'm a firm believer that places that make a solid chicken taco will have solid other tacos. Their chicken taco was pretty good. I've gotten it a couple times, but they have some others that are so good, the chicken taco has been put on the back burner, for me.
Onto my favorites. The carnitas. Man, they definitely excel in this department. We live near Don Pedro and Carnitas Uruapan, plus the boyfriend has learned to make some pretty tasty carnitas, too...but I'll go out of my way for some Paco's carnitas tacos. So tender, so juicy, so flavorful. They hit the spot every time.
Now, this last one surprised me. I was really hungry when we stopped in to grab some tacos for home. I really wanted to try a chicharrón taco, but I know better than to transport them. Most chicharrón tacos get so soft they turn to mush and the tortilla doesn't hold up well, so naturally, we shared one in the car. I WAS IN LOVE. With the taco, not my boyfriend. Well I guess him too, but more so this taco. I tend to favor salsa verde, so we tried it in green salsa. Next time we came, we tried the red salsa and while also very good, their salsa verde is slightly more flavorful, in my opinion, and if I had to choose, I'd get that one every time. I can put down 3-4 tacos though, depending on my level of hunger, so I guess I can get one of each and some carnitas tacos and be on my jolly way.
I've also tried a carnitas torta. Pretty sure they don't put avocado on it, but it was still a solid torta and wouldn't hesitate to order one again. I've had a couple bites of a steak burrito. While the burrito was good, again, it was steak and I'd probably opt for a different meat, but I rarely order burritos from places other than El Milagro.
Both the guacamole and rice were expensive for the portions, and they weren't that good. Guacamole is easy enough to make, but some places make some delicious guac, such as Asadero on Montrose. This is not that good, and it's basically just as pricey for a lesser amount. The rice was bland. Put that money towards more tacos and save yourself the disappointment.
Overall, Paco's has some really great tacos and some really average tacos. With all the reviews raving about the steak, I'm surprised I wasn't a fan, but I'm definitely here for the carnitas and chicharrón. Oh, their horchata is pretty tasty. Not too sweet, not too much cinnamon and doesn't have that grainy texture that some places end up with. It's nicely balanced. read more
