408K Race To The Row - Finish Line

    408K Race To The Row

    West San Jose

A very well organized race. Starts at the SAP Center and ends at Santana Row. The course is…read moremostly flat, you run under a few overpasses. I did enjoy running through San Jose, a good way to see the city. They were very strict with the corral starts. This was my first time doing this race, so I'm guessing the rain probably limited the crowds lining the streets. I did enjoy the 8K distance, something different. Finishing on Santana Row was cool as you could smell breakfast cooking as the restaurants were opening. The shuttles back were great, well organized, comfortable, and quick. I can see why this event is so popular!!

Registration: Super…read moreeasy. I got the $39 opening special. Email updates get a little tedious after a while and I ended up getting 2 or 3 of the same thing in the 2 weeks before the event. Packet Pick up: I really wish they had day of pick up as I live over an hours drive away and had to make the trek to San Jose twice in one weekend. That said it was really easy to get my packet, you just needed to know your bib number and they check it against your name. The TShirts are pretty cool and something I will actually wear. Course: Nice and flat. Nice addition to have the different ''miles'' (Veteran / Mariachi). The mile markers were not completely accurate though (yup.. the serious Runner in me notices these things). Mile 2 was actually 1.1mi and mile 3 was just 0.9mi. The event started right on time as planned and without any hitches however I do think that some kind of enforcement of the waves has to be done. Upon coming to the start line there was no one checking bibs. I was put in wave 1 for my sub 8 min mile pace and standing at the start with about a dozen people deep in front of me I noticed a lot of the people around me were wearing bibs marked waves 2, 3 and even 4. Once we started it was also made clear that some people placed in wave 1 really should not have been there. I had to zig zag around people that were not going the correct pace for the wave. Had I been out to PR I would have been really pissed off. Post Race: I didn't experience the ''hearding'' that people had mentioned in previous years but I guess that could have been down to the fact I was one of the first 90 people to finish. There was some walk to the end to get our bibs but nothing major. The post race food was really lame and looking at the pictures from previous years I was expecting to get more than what I did - a bottle of Water, Apple and some Fruit chews. NO BANANA! Really? That gives me the sads. It's common knowledge that Runners eat Banana's. The occasional Orange slice, yes. Apples No. Unless they're in some form of Pastry (Mmmm, Carbs). The medal is also pretty cool, it can be removed from the lanyard and used as a bottle opener and overall I am glad I can now mark this event off of my Running Bucket List but I doubt I will do it again. Way too far to come for what it is. Additional: This event is 1 or 3 of the ''Run the Bay'' series challenge where if you complete all 3 events you get an additional medal.Other 2 events are the Across The Bay (12k or 5k) in San Francisco and Let's Go 510 in Berkeley. Personal shyt: Time: 34:54 / 6:58 min mile. I intended to do a moderate 45:00 / 9 min mile and for the first half mile I was well on track but then some dude with a stroller ran past me. That's never happened to me before and I didn't like it (I now know how my poor husband feels. lol). So I had to speed up to my comfortable ''Aaah yeah, It's on!'' pace. Competitive much? Place: 90th out of 5,000+ and 18th Female. BOOM! -Crazy Runner Girl.

Unfortunately we only had 7 so we couldn't do the 8 person reservation. I called to get info about wait times (I understand that they can't give me an exact estimate so I told them give me worse case scenario) and I was advised that the group of 7 could have some long wait times so we opted to just come up with 3 of us. Upon arrival, place was dead other than 2-3 staff members within sight. We asked the individual behind the counter some basic questions being first timers at that location, we ended up purchasing 2 races and we received 1 for free because it was Tuesday and that was just a deal they had. After they took our money they said "well it could be about 30 minutes until you all race" which we responded saying that it's totally fine we will hangout thank you. Well since we had 30 minutes to kill why not buy some arcade credits and mess around (very mediocre arcade at best). After we purchased arcade credits, about 15 minutes went buy another employee came up to us to let us know that if we wanted to race we would have to wait till about 4:45-5pm because a group rented out the facility and there's just nothing they can do. Keep in mind when we purchased our races, 2:23pm to be exact, we got told 30 minutes. Somehow between multiple phone calls to confirm before the long drive and the day of upon arrival purchasing our races not a single individual let us know about this possible booking. ALSO no we did not show up before this group event, they were already there. Which in their defense the employee giving us a refund said "well we are not allowed to tell people about bookings". Great totally understandable I run a business my self and I understand private information etc. however the lying of race times, letting us wait for a bit and following up with "if you don't take the refund we will give you 2 extra races" well thanks but I find it hard to believe we got the full reasoning behind the situation... also to add more context, no we weren't those customers causing issues, being overly loud, or causing any sort of issues. Civilized beings and in return got a pretty S*** end of the stick. K1 speed its self is great but this location is ran by some individuals that have zero interest in making the experience rememberable. K1s slogan "Arrive and Drive" they have printed on their business cards left out crucial information. Arrive and drive past. Keep your money and spend it with a business that will give you the proper attention. Not asking to be treated like royalty. Just some common decency.

His honesty made us feel comfortable about what we needed to purchase and was very welcoming to the RC community, by welcoming us back to tryout the facility they have there, which was pretty dope. As a Noob, it could be very intimidating walking into a store full of equipment and not knowing what to get. My wife and I felt none of that, as we were helped with great service and left knowing that I'll be coming back for parts later. The indoor track and "crawl park" (if that's what it's called), was very impressive and the atmosphere was welcoming along with the patrons that were there. Spend your money here if you're looking for great knowledge & service as well as a place to run your RC.

A Christmas Review Story…read more.. I went here to find gifts for boys ranging from 5-23yo. I came out with a perfect haul of more than just stocking stuffers. NorCal has a wide range of gifts that are hobby grade toys. They're not your typical Target/Walmart toys but a little better quality for not much more. I love the selection here. Service is key for hobby stores. NorCal excelled today as I was a little unsure how some of these hot wheels looking cars work. A man with Xmas lights necklace came out and showed how fun they can be. A 1:43 scale car can drift right out of the box! One dude started showing off a tiny RC drone, and another was busy helping a customer on RC parts. I don't know how they can staff so many people but they sure did today. Although I was expecting each gift item to be around $50 for each gift, there were some really cool micro gifts like remote control hot wheels for about $25. Last year I bought some RC warbird planes for about $100 each. I didn't see them this time around but that's ok. I want to give a proper review outside of Xmas shopping. I'll return when I'm ready to upgrade my Traxxas truck.

I ran my very first marathon back in 2003. I've always heard from other runners that if you had to…read moreonly run one marathon, that the Big Sur Marathon would be that one. Many years later, I finally got around to entering their drawing and getting a spot for the marathon this year. Unfortunately, with less than a month to go, there was a road slip-out near Rocky Creek due to heavy rain. Since the road couldn't be repaired in time for the race, the course was modified to an out-and-back course. According to their history page on their website, there were 3 other years (1995, 1998, and 2011) where the course had to be modified due to weather related road issues. The normal course is point-to-point from Big Sur up to Carmel. Instead of taking a shuttle ride down to Big Sur, we were bussed over to the start line in Carmel. The race from the expo to the finish line was very well organized and managed. The venue for the race expo/packet pick-up was at the Monterey Conference Center. The process was very well streamlined with signs throughout the conference center. Bib pick-up and bus tickets were upstairs. The vendor booths were on the first floor. I liked that the long sleeve race shirt was made with recycled material, but the design wasn't that great. Even with the modified course, we were still treated to some very beautiful views! I was hoping for this to be a one-and-done marathon, but I just might need to return for another year as we never got to run across the famous Bixby Bridge.

Difficult review to leave for the 2023 Marathon. This was my second time getting in, but I didn't…read morerun it the first time due to another marathon I was doing so close to this one so this year I made certain to plan around this for 2023. Expo/Communication/Shirts/Bibs - Excellent Course - challenging, but not unbearable. My bff asked how hard the hills were and I can't say they are deal breakers. Hills are great for your body and these aren't life changing but it's definitely a rolling hill course. I'll post my strava elevation chart. I think the gain is near 2,000 ft (1800-1900ish). Rolling hills with a few areas of decline. Weather - always out of our control. I'll say this is what made the day an absolute nightmare for me! I despised SO many miles of this marathon because the winds felt like they were 40mph, others have said they were 35mph - headwind, so strong my bib damn near ripped off my top, my hat flew off and it was just a complete disaster. NOTHING was fun or gorgeous enough for me to endure this type of weather and claim this was enjoyable. I was miserable :( and later cried on the entire car ride from Carmel to Cambria because I was so sad over how it all played out. I also got a bloody nose after from being so dried out from all the wind, sand etc. blowing on me the entire race. I take full accountability for everything that was within my control with this race. I'd just ran a PR at the LA marathon, and won first overall female on a trail race the following week. I'd spent the last several weeks recovering and preparing for this run and it all went to shit. I started my period the day before and felt horrible. I realized it was a closed course and could not meet my bff at 18 and 23 as I usually do for snacks/drinks. I didn't like having to try and carry so many of my snacks and tampons on me, which made me feel so weighed down with my waist pack slapping against my bladder the entire time. I didn't taper much the week before once realizing the hills would probably prevent a PR even if I attempted to make up time on any down hill. I ran and cycled over 200 miles the week of the race. Probably played a small factor in me not being strong enough to fight such an insane strong headwind. I wore a short sleeve instead of a long sleeve and was freezing. I checked my jacket and gloves with gear check by 630A thinking there's no way I'd need gloves on a day with these temps (high 50's-60's) not ever thinking I'd face winds like I did. I'd rather have run this in a downpour than these mph headwinds. I had to stop to use the porta potties at least, and I kid you not 6-7x. Once is highly unusual for me. I have no idea why my body was doing this. I was so cold I wasn't taking in fluids from my water bottles, yet couldn't stop having to wait in lines to pee at almost every aid station. In all honesty I was bored out of my mind. The scenery did not win me over in any real way. I've seen it all before. I had such high hopes for this bucket list - most beautiful race in the world but for me it just wasn't worth it. I've run in below freezing, over 100, Nor'Easters but never a constant headwind on challenging hills for nearly the ENTIRE marathon. At times I felt like I was at a complete stand still pushing against a wall of wind and going nowhere. I finished feeling so depleted and sad. I told myself I would not cry on the course or I'd become even more unglued. My mind was in such a bad place with all of it. I'd hoped it would be a stunning day, full of beauty and I was so miserable I was looking out to where in the ocean I could run out to drown myself to not endure this course another minute. Had the winds not been what they were and me not need the restroom a half dozen times, things may have been better. I love spectators and their energy, smiles, signs, dogs, high fives, music and more. This course felt extremely boring to me. I love my solitude but this course was just too empty for me. If I could have got into a steady rhythm and flowed through it quickly, perhaps a closed no spectator course wouldn't have affected me as much. Unfortunately, women aren't able to plan marathons around their cycle and this was such a draining day for me - especially after a 3a wake up for a 345a shuttle to sit at the start until 645a. All in all, I LOVE the medal, appreciate ALL of the volunteers but this race was just not at all what I'd hoped it be. That's marathoning for ya! Ya win some you lose some and this was a horrible race for me with a really nasty finishing time. I love a challenge but part of me is completely scared off of attempting to run this again in hopes of better weather. I think I checked the box and I'm onto the next. I'm in need of a little recovery race to win in the next week or so to feel better about how this one went ;) Gear check and finish line area was great!. I grabbed my gear and left to get a coffee as I didn't feel I deserved much after such a bad run.
