I've been all over DC and Alexandria looking for a place that can manage to cut my very fine but very thick, extremely straight hair. It shows scissor cuts like baby hair, but there's so much of it, it takes forever to cut it "right" by the usual methods. And do not even THINK about coming after my hair with a razor blade. No matter how much it is only bad for my hair "if it's done wrong". Wrong-O. You razor it, and I watch it break off into giblets and split ends for the next 4-6 weeks, until I have the cash and the gumption to take on Yet Another Hairdresser Trial. All that ended for me when I put my recalcitrant hair into Akeiko's hands. I've heard that "Japanese hair is different". And I can tell you that this cracker writing this review could not GET any more Caucasian-looking! But if my trouble-making hair is like Japanese hair, or maybe it's just that everything Akeiko touches turns out beautifully! Whatever it is, she's the gal who makes me not want to cue-ball myself when I get frustrated with my hair, and is helping me grow it out long (upper back now). I keep asking her to keep an eye out for good unusual styles for my hair, since she keeps on top of what's in style in Japan, and new techniques, too. Of course, I'm lucky in that I don't have all the problems of lifting my hair color that someone with naturally dark brown on black hair would have: I can Manic Panic pretty much any old time. And Akeiko is the kind of stylist who would be okay with that and maybe even have some great ideas, too! I'm sure she can cut your hair to look like everyone's else's, but please- don't waste her artistic talent and her studied skills on that. The search is over! I've had the same hair dresser for six years, and have been very wary about allowing unfamiliar hands/scissors near my hair. But alas, my hair dresser is in a different continent, and not having any immediate plans to go back, I mustered up the courage to trust the Yelp reviews, and set up an appointment with the famed Akiko. Success! Akiko understood exactly what I meant when I said I wanted "edgy but feminine." Soft curls that don't make me look old, and bangs that effortlessly sweep across my forehead without obstructing my view. Despite my somewhat vague descriptions, Akiko somehow managed to produce results that perfectly mirrored the picture I had in my full head of thick Asian hair. Usually, my curls tend to be a bit hard at first, anticipating that they will soften out as the perm wears out. When I saw that the initial result was what I would want my hair to look like as my hair grows out, I was a bit nervous that my hair would flatten out too quickly. I didn't get to test-drive fellow Taiwanese Tony before their prices spiked out of my budget range, but I've had a good amount of success with his modern-niche compadres. Keiko was described to me by the receptionist as being part of the edgy trio, but she delivered a dramatically more conservative haircut than Akiko and the blowout gave me a touch of helmet head. That said, both stylists were friendly and did a great job of making my 'do look sublime for my wash-and-go shoulder-length lifestyle. It is easy to take certain things for granted when you're moving from one place to another. That hairstylist who you searched high and low for, you realize one afternoon when your hair looks like an overgrown shaggy dog's, didn't move across the country with you. You sigh and pull your hair back yet another day and recall that this isn't the first time you've been faced with this problem. The year in Japan brought you face to face with hopelessly cool haircuts and your inability to express "asymetrical bangs" in Japanese. But you owned up to the challenge and ended up with perhaps the haircut of your life. Thus, when I walked by the Ozuki Salon one evening I was overjoyed to see the small print below the salon name, "A Japanese Salon." My hair is a hopeless stick-straight mess and, as mentioned above, the best haircuts of my life were had in a Japanese salon (where my hairdresser had the amazing ability to make my hair feel light and actually rather hip). So I was a little excited when making my appointment. I was greeted warmly by the receptionist and offered my choice of coffee or tea, waiting only a few minutes for my hairstylist, Akiko, to finish up her previous client. Akiko was quite friendly and accomodating in deciphering my request for "shorter, asymetrical bangs" (I am still not over that hairstyle) and "a sort of zig-zag layered look." After having my hair shampooed by a really nice girl named Jessica, Akiko set to work at my four-months-overdue-for-a-haircut mess. When she finished, cutting my hair while wet and dry, I looked, well, hip. (Or at least I felt pretty hip) And, unless my co-workers, housemate, and boyfriend are all liars (which they very well could be), my haircut looks great to other people, too. I definitely recommend Akiko and Ozuki Salon, and I will actually look forward to getting my haircut in a more timely fashion. I find the prices to be on par with a typical salon, if a bit on the high end ($65 is the starting rate for women's haircuts, check the website for other pricing), but so completely worth it. Maybe I'm stuck in 2005, but $78 is a LOT to pay for just a regular haircut! My experience at Ozuki was okay, but definitely not worth the $93 I paid (the hair cut plus tip). The only other time I've paid this much for a simple no-frills haircut was when I sought out a famed stylist at a salon in Seattle; my regular Seattle salon catered to students, specialized in Asian hair, and cost me $25 (I did my own blow-drying after). Sadly I had to find a new place when I recently moved back to DC ... In my view, I should only be paying this much if the stylist is truly exemplary and/or the cut comes with some luxury perks. Ozuki did not offer any of these. The cons: - Salon is inconveniently located in deep Georgetown, far from metro; - Interior was chaotic and not relaxing at all; - "Reception" desk (IKEA table is what it looked like) was oddly located in the middle of the salon; - Receptionist wasn't rude, but left me standing unacknowledged for a while. I'm always baffled by customer service people who can actually allow a customer to just stand there without a simple "I'll be right with you; thank you for your patience" ... would that be so hard?!; - Shampoo was perfunctory and not particularly relaxing because the space was small and the shampoo-ist was also not particularly friendly. It felt like a cheap haircut experience, which would have been fine if it was actually cheap. As for the cut itself, my stylist (Urara) was very courteous, and I liked that she didn't feel obligated to make small talk with me. She did an okay job, but I did not get the feeling that she had a lot of experience under her belt. She didn't handle her scissors with confidence. I asked for side-sweep bangs, and they didn't turn out well. When I got home I had to do a lot of cleaning up because of all the odd lengths. I watched the other stylists when I was there and I didn't see anyone I was particularly impressed by. You can just tell when someone has skills - they either move quickly and with confidence or they seem to be taking their time making everything perfect (my last stylist was like this - she took forever but I could go over a year without getting another cut because it was so perfectly done). Even though I'm intrigued by some of the other stylists' bios, I'll probably not be inclined to make a return trip ... my feet, wallet, and bangs will probably still have bad memories. read more

After reading reviews, I decided to take a gamble and get my hair cut with Akiko. I have thick, coarse, dry, brittle, disgusting Asian hair that seems to be unmanageable by other stylists I have gone to in the DC area... previous haircuts have been described by my mom as if a dog bit my hair into chunks. So I am very satisfied with my decision to receive my haircut from Akiko. Judging by the hair cut the customer in front of me received, if you're looking for something hip/trendy/edgy, Akiko can definitely handle that. If you're like me and just was looking for a basic haircut (or reshaping/layering), Akiko is also just as great. The appointment was easy to schedule... I used the online system and pretty much through online communication (email) scheduled the appointment. They'll ask you if you prefer water or tea.. which is nice. The tea came with a little snack. Akiko was very detailed, attentive and focused. She listened to what I wanted.. and understood exactly what I wanted when I couldn't explain it in words. She is good at having a conversation but not make it seemed force. I'll definitely be back and am so happy that I found a place to take care of my hair. My mom can't make fun of it anymore. 3 weeks after my haircut with Akiko, I've got mixed feelings to share. This review is probably more like a 3 stars for value, and 4 stars for Akiko, but I guess I'll round up. Akiko was awesome, incredibly friendly and approachable, though not overbearingly chatty. She listened to what I wanted (a low-maintenance regime without relying on products), and checked in with me to make sure I was okay with anything she was about to do. I also really appreciate that I mentioned that I only blow dry my hair a few times a week, and she showed me how I could blow dry my hair without even using a brush. Whether or not it's true that an "Asian salon" handles Asian hair better, my thick mop didn't faze her in the slightest, and she went about her work incredibly efficiently. That said, it might just be the fact that I have long hair and didn't ask for anything drastic but, well... I went in with long hair, and I essentially came out with long hair sans split ends. And being the low-maintenance gal that I am, I balk at the idea of spending $65 plus tip for just a good but not great haircut. This is why I end up with only 2-3 haircuts a year... Hence the mixed feelings. Akiko seems to know her stuff well, and she definitely delivered in terms of helping tame my hair and making it easier to stay low-maintenance. In that respect, I've noticed a difference, and I would give a solid 4 yelp stars. But the narcissist (and cheap-skate) in me wants a little more "va-voom" for having paid so much... read more

It was my first time going to Ozuki, the experience was alright. Tony was the one that cut my hair. It was a simple haircut, very on point. I do think he did a good job. The new haircut's got everything I asked for; I have nothing to complain about but my new hair didn't wow me. The service was BAD. In Georgetown or just DC area in general, I've always had good customer service in salons; to my surprise, Ozuki definitely does not give good customer service. The front desk lady was awful. She had this emotionless face on the whole time I was there. She didn't greet nor talk to me when I came in (one of the girls who wash hairs ended up asking if I had an appointment); the front desk lady didn't offer me a drink/water/tea/ anything. It looked like she was bored and just hated her job and every customer. Why would you want anyone like this work as a front desk in a salon??!! It may be because I rushed from work to Ozuki and was still in my work clothes and they didn't value me as a customer that could possibly return back. Well, I totally would if the customer service wasn't that bad and for the same reason I wouldn't recommend my friends or families to go there. After getting really tired of blow drying my long hair day in and day out, I was ready for a new do. My regular stylist had disappeared and the old salon wouldn't give me any forwarding information, but thankfully Yelp came to the rescue. As the other Yelpers mentioned, it's a cute, zen-like salon with friendly staff and service. I also made my appointment with Akiko and she took the time to listen to my preferences and make suggestions. She provided some style recommendations for me to choose, and off came the inches of cumbersome locks. woohoo! Not only did she walk me through the cut, she also took time to show me how to style it and achieve the same look at home. My only complaints were the price and the hours. Wish they were open a little later at least one day a week for those of us who don't work in the city or live nearby, and it is a bit pricier than what i'm used to. However, it's been several weeks since I got the cut and I'm still getting compliments. read more

To say I dislike hair salons is an understatement. One year I went as far as to cut my own hair (which obviously didn't turn out very well) to avoid having to get my (extremely long) hair cut by a professional. I dislike mindless chit-chat, and I always strangely feel like the stylist is sooo annoyed that they actually have to be there. The last place I went to in DC (Bang Salon) the stylist grumbled and complained that she actually had to dry my hair because (and I quote) "It's so damn long." Seriously - I felt like she wanted me to apologize for having long hair or something. But that's a review for a different time and place. That being said, I went to Ozuki off of recommendations I read on this very site. And if I wasn't moving across the country, I would go back, and go back, and go back. I asked for Akiko, and she was marvelous. I never use that word, but it's fitting here. Not only did she make the conversation not seem awkward, she also acted pleased to be cutting my hair. Amazing, right? AND she had brilliant ideas about what to do, and my hair looks fantastic, if I do say so myself. I've had a lot of bad haircuts in DC. I think it's just a combination of not having many Asian people in the urban center area (many of my asian girlfriends get their hair cut out in the burbs...I unfortunately have no car and do not have that luxury) and me falsely trusting a brand name (like "Aveda"). Recently got my hair cut by Tony after reading online that this is a real Japanese salon that specializes in Asian hair. I have to say, I LOVE my haircut! It has been growing in really nicely and it is extremely low maintenance. The best thing about Tony is that he is totally a no-bullshit type of person. He immediately diagnosed what atrocity that a previous stylist had done to my hair, and set about fixing it as best he could. Tony is very methodical and spent a lot of time on my hair. I wasn't wowed by my Aveda cut before, but was pretty ambivalent at the time. Now that I've had an actual good haircut, I am never going back to that place! The salon is a bit small, but very efficiently run. I was a tad bit early for my appointment (15 minutes) but Tony took me right away anyway. The lady who washed my hair was very nice and kept checking to make sure the water was a good temperature. At $68 for cut and blowdry it is extremely reasonable. I'll be back! read more

I love this place. I went in for my first haircut with Akiko yesterday and the results are amazing! I am East Indian so my hair texture is very similar to east asian hair - fine yet heavy. I didn't have to tell her much other than I needed lots of layers in my hair because it can get bulky otherwise. She was able to give me a very low maintenance haircut. The layers are cut precisely and lay beautifully because she cuts it while it's wet and then finishes the cut while dry to ensure the layers lay right. I've been to many high end salons in DC/VA area and this is the best hair cut I have ever received during my 3 years here. The idea of trying out a Japanese salon came to me from a coworker but also from my recent trip to the Philippines. I had the best haircut of my life there and thought it makes sense to go to a place that understands our texture! And I'm so glad I did! All for $65 - you can't beat it..esp in Georgetown!! I was referred to this salon by a woman who's hair cut I loved! When I left a voicemail asking for a reservation, I got a call back the next day, I was offered an appointment very soon, and this was after a consultation about my "wants" prior to coming in. I was paired with a stylist she felt would best suit my needs and boy did he! Shu was so good, he talked with me a lot through the entire process and I couldn't be happier, the offering of green tea, coffee or water was just icing on the cake. It was a pleasure to not only get a great haircut but have it performed with such a high level of customer service, I'll be back for sure. read more

In the year I've lived in DC I have had nothing but stellar experiences going to Ozuki. Akiko is great with my kind of wavy but not tightly-curled hair. She seems to understand the wave perfectly and coaxes the prettiest curls out of it. I don't know what it is about stylists in DC, but after a year and a half of going to these triple $ salons with decent yelp ratings, I have not yet found one that I would return to a second time. I give this haircut a 55%. Cuts here start at $73, and I'm a generous tipper despite being a student on a strict budget. I want to look presentable and professional. I'll start with the positive: Most of the style is great, and the service was lovely. I was a walk-in, and they were able to accommodate me within 20 minutes. The stylist, a pretty middle aged woman, gave me a cute, handcrafted bob, which was a welcome change after my last crap haircut from elsewhere. I almost felt like I was in the clear, that I had finally found a place where I could become a regular. But as she was finishing with my sideswipe bangs, she changed their direction. Of course they wouldn't stay put, I've had my part there for a decade! (She said she didn't like the look of my forehead on that side?! I don't mind my moderately high forehead, but sweeping the bangs from one side to the other won't hide it!). The result was some serious Bieber madness, and then she scooted me out of the chair in a hurry. I paid, fighting the swaying bangs as they flopped from side to side (picture Hugh Grant in 4 Weddings & a Funeral), and went to the restroom to cry. Then I put my hat on (luckily it was a cold day) and got out of there, wondering where to go next to get them fixed. Not a great way to feel after the time and money spent there. read more

*UPDATED REVIEW! I got my second hair cut from Akiko. This time for a longer layered look from my last outgrown A-bob. I wasn't too sure how this would turn out since I didn't want something too "styled" because I'm trying to grow out my hair (dramatically styled hair tends to grow out funny). Akiko remembered me since the last time I saw her (6 months ago!), and knew exactly what I wanted. The result is nothing too dramatic, but I am liking the cut more and more. Seriously, she cuts hair really well. I don't even have to blow dry or sometimes even brush my really flat hair. It all just falls in the right places and I have this volume on my hair. The bangs are natural and just right. If you want a really good haircut (no matter what style) that doesn't require any maintenance at all, go see Akiko at Ozuki! ----- I love my new hair, and I love Akiko! Despite some of the last few not-so-positive reviews, I am here to announce to the world that Akiko and my hair was the greatest encounter ever achieved. I have never been so happy about my haircut. I feel pretty vain because any chance I could get to get a reflection of my hair, I am checking my own hair out. Ridiculous. As soon as I sat down with Akiko, as most of the good reviews here say, she really asked me what I wanted and what I did not want for my hair. Within 2 min, she said "ah hah, I got an idea" and proceeded to explain to me every wonderful thing she would do to my hair. I nodded in agreement. After 30 some minutes of wet-cutting, dry-cutting, easy styling tips and some good chatting, I was all done and had a big smile on my face. The following day (today), my hair still looks good, and it was almost too easy to style it. And by styling, I mean, brushing my hair. Hah. Coming from New York, I used to get my hair cut at Hair mates, a pretty popular Japanese salon on Astor pl. Skeptical of a new salon in DC and my flat thin Asian hair that never seemed to have any volume, I found Ozuki from Yelp and made my appointment. As a Chinese studying at US, I have no choice but finding a place that can take care of Asian hair styles. So I came to Ozuki for help. The overall experience is very satisfied. Tony is my stylist. I chose him because first of all he's from Taiwan and can speak naive Chinese which allows me to communicate more easily. Secondly, my classmate recommended him to me because of his great hair cutting and styling work. That's why I assigned to make an appointment with him. He's really good with navvy skills and very warm and kind personalities. It's so easy to get alone with him and discuss your need and demand. The price may be somewhat expensive for students but sometime you really need a good haircut. Tips: Come at weekdays otherwise you will have to wait Tony for two weeks. read more

Just want to echo the positive reviews given on Akiko at Ozuki. My friend has been getting her hair cut by Akiko for a while now and recommended her to me. I too have Asian hair. I've worn my hair long for most of my life, except for those occasions when i've gotten really bored and had an itch to cut it really short, only to be horrified and swear never to do it again. Anyway, when I went to Akiko, I wasn't planning on getting my hair cut short. I came in meaning to a mid-length, asymmetrical cut. we talked about it and she thought it woudl be nice to do what i wanted but overall shorter. it turned out great and i have to give akiko major props because that length has never looked right on me. Akiko was extremely extremely attentive and took a lot of care in cutting my hair. she also showed me how to style it afterwards too. amazingly enough my hair looked BETTER a few days after it was cut. i've been to asian hairstylists before, but my experience at ozuki was exceptional. no more choppy cuts from stylists without experience w/ asian hair! this is the first review i've ever written for anything (yes, in life) so you can imagine how much i definitely recommend trying this place out! read more

OH YELPERS YOU DID IT AGAIN! Thank you for the great and accurate reviews. Before going to Ozuki Salon I was really apprehensive to trying out any of the salons in the D.C. area, because my friends all had stories about bad hairdressers who could not cut their Asian hair. But I was really desperate for my highlights started to grow out. Well, after reading everyone's reviews I decided to try this place out (since I figure...."Hey bad haircuts are fact of life when moving to a new area"). But I didn't have to go through the pain of horrid hair after all! Keiko, whom I had an appointment with was very friendly, funny, and willing to take the time to understand exactly what kind of hairstyle I wanted (even though I was 15 minutes late and she wasn't mad at all). She did a wonderful job mimicking my previous "Fresh Off the Boat" Japanese haircut and getting my hair color just right. The atmosphere itself is very relaxed and the staff is very friendly. They also have my favorite Japanese hair product Spice Water for sale (yaye!). In all it was a great experience and would definitely be seeing Keiko again for my hair. read more

"Oh, these layers will look so great when you let your hair air dry," the hair dressers would say. Uh... what layers? I think I might need a microscope. But Akiko is the real deal. Keiko resuscitated my hair and gave it a new breath of life! I can't say enough how low maintenance I am with my hair. Thankfully, I am blessed with a bit of a volume. A good haircut will enhance it for weeks/months and a bad haircut won't make it pass day 3. I am one of those people that would tell the stylists to do whatever their hearts desire with my hair and always end up having stylists being too afraid to cut my hair. Go to town, damn it!!! Anyway, Keiko was incredible. I told her a few pointers on how I normally wear and take care of my hair, as well as my aforementioned concern. She worked her magic and 3.5 weeks later, I can still wake up and not having to do anything with my hair. AND the shampooer I got, oh my goodness, she gave me the BEST head/neck massage. read more

I think Ozuki might love yelpers as much as we love them. When I arrived at 9am on a Saturday morning for my appointment with Keiko, I noticed that YELP was written very large next to my name. The receptionist was extremely nice, introduced me to Keiko, and we got started. I explained to her that I wanted something drastically different, maybe a bit longer than chin-length, strawberry blondish color. She brought out the color book and we browsed the options together: she was very good at explaining what would work best for me. She also asked what my routine was and the kinds of styling products I used. I was pumped for this haircut! As she mixed the color another woman loaded my neck down with towels and asked if I would like water, coffee or tea. I asked for green tea but she never returned with it. No big deal, but I still noticed it. Keiko methodically applied my highlights and color and I was able to take in the beauty of the salon. It's one room, which I really really liked. Lots of natural light and you can also look around and see what everyone else is having done. Many of the stylists would also say hello to me while they passed, which I thought was very cool. After my very indulgent shampoo (they also applied toner-- yay!) I was really excited about my haircolor-- it was exactly what I had asked for. Keiko said she would take about 3 inches off of my hair, which sounded perfect. She did the main chop while it was wet and said she'd do the layering/texturizing once it was dry. I noticed that she didn't cut much off-- maybe more like an inch and a half to two inches and it was more shoulder grazing than chin length. I figured that maybe more would come off once it was dry, but it didn't. I'm satisfied with the cut but it is not the hip trendy style that I asked for--- it's pretty classic and just a shorter version of what I came in with. Still, I love the color. In the end, I'm glad I tried out Ozuki but I'm not sure if I'll be back. I really love my stylist at Trim and I think they do more inventive and trendy cuts there. I would still recommend Ozuki to people who are looking for a solid cut and color in a very relaxing environment. read more

After reading the reviews from previous Yelpers, I decided to give Ozuki a try over the summer. I got Akiko. Before the cut, I grew my hair out so that I could donate it to charity. I think because of that, Akiko wasn't as adventurous as I hoped she would be. I kept telling her to cut it shorter but it never really went anywhere. I also felt that she was rushing to finish me and didn't really pay too much attention to detail. In general, I don't think the atmosphere at the salon was very friendly. I was left to sit on the shampoo chair for at least 20 mins without knowing where to go with wet hair and the lady that washed my hair just walked away. If I am paying at least 65$, I expect to get a better cut than what I ended up having. It wasn't bad, but not the quality I had expected. read more

It is very rare that I can walk out of a salon without feeling like I need to go home and redo the styling to what I feel comfortable in. And for the first time, I could walk out feeling great about my new cut! I called in about 2 weeks in advance for an appointment with Akiko, because she had so many glowing reviews on here for making a "change." I've had so many horrific haircut experiences that I have been terrified of dramatically changing my look. I trusted her judgment and she said she would give me bangs to bring emphasis to my eyes (!). No stylist has "customized" a cut so much for my features. From there, I knew I was in good hands. Because there was a bit of a wait, I was given a hair treatment--yay! That's service for ya. Even the lady washing my hair was very nice and asked me if it was my first time, as she recognized regulars. Akiko's cutting and blow-drying was so reminiscent of the detail that stylists do in Asia...I was so excited because I knew that my layers will now fall in the right places without too much maintenance. I could walk outta the salon without a style that looked "straight out of the salon" but rather functional and as if I had a great hair style/hair day to begin with. I'm glad I trusted Ozuki! If you want a change and genuinely welcoming service, this salon is it. I'm sure the other stylists are just as great...and they all have a great head of hair themselves. Show your student ID and get a discount! In all, I spent around $60 for the wash, new cut, and finish. *As a note, on Saturdays the front entrance area is closed off so you have to go from the back entrance between 30 and M Street. read more

I had an ok experience at Ozuki Salon. My stylist was Shigemi, and while she was reasonably nice, my hair cut with her only turned out ok. I asked for an angled blunt bob, but expressed concern that with my thick hair, the blunt bob could be problematic. She said she would layer it some to balance the thickness, but she didn't really layer it at all because it's very bottom heavy as it's growing out. She had some problems with my bangs, and blew them out in a very funny way. She also let me get up with a million hair pieces on my face, and even though she pointed it out, she didn't bother to spend a few seconds to brush it off my face. I had to wash my face in the bathroom later. Overall, I gave 3 stars because my hair cut wasn't awful, but it wasn't good either. I would return to check out of the other stylists who have good reviews, but I don't think Shigemi understands my hair, and so I wouldn't see her again. read more

I have gone here a total of three times since I moved to DC. First time with Akiko for a cut. She is great and very detailed. Then I tried Tony for a cut and color. James is great with color, he really goes thru every section and makes sure that he doesn't dye your scalp. He even commented that my haircut was nice (and it was last cut by Akiko) He was great! Last week I went back to Akiko for a cut and color. This time, I went short and colored my hair one color. I am very happy and my hair looks so healthy now! After a myriad of terrible hair cuts / experiences in DC I found Akiko - thank you Yelp! She is great! While I would love to look edgier, it's just not me. The first time I meet Akiko I was convinced I wasn't cool enough for her to cut my hair. However she consistently gives me a great cut, nothing crazy but always pretty. She is also amazing at color. I had to go to someone else when she was on vacation and it just wasn't the same. Also Elizabeth give a killer hair wash. She does this massage thing with her fingers on the back of your next and it is magical! As long as I am in DC Akiko will be cutting my hair! read more

Another happy customer! I hadn't gotten my haircut in over a year because the last haircut I got in DC was a disaster!! I paid too much for a place in Penn Quarter and they really murdered my hair. Anyway, I went in to see Keiko at Ozuki yesterday and she took my shoulder-length straight mess and gave me the cutest pixie cut ever. I was worried because it was a big change, but she did a great job! Plus, she was fun and easy to chat with. The rest of the staff is great as well - the woman who washed my hair was really friendly, and came by to compliment my haircut when Keiko was finished. Ozuki is a little hard to find, but it's well worth the effort. Plus, they don't push products on you, which is something I hate about other salons. They'll definitely suggest something if you ask, but otherwise, it's a very low-pressure place. Loved it! read more

I just moved to DC from NYC so I was very concerned about where to get my haircut. Thanks to Yelp, I decided to give Ozuki a try. Despite the reviews for certain stylists, my strategy is to ask the receptionist to recommend a hairstylist, and then decide whether or not to stay or change stylist after my first try. Well, the person who she recommended was Shigemi. First, the atmosphere: Not cool and hip, but definitely no nonsense and very dedicated. Next the haircut: Shigemi - not flashy or fab as my old stylist from Soho, but she did an excellent job. Her approach was very thorough and detail oriented, which gave me a more demure look than I preferred, but the end product was very nice. Now, on the payment protocol. The receptionist was very insistent that I tip the shampoo person. Maybe NYC is different, but I've been to many salons in NYC and I've never been asked specifically to tip the shampoo person before. I always thought I would combine the tip for the stylist, and she/he would then split a fraction with them. Unless of course the shampoo person does a fab job. So I was kind of confused, and I also felt kind of forced. I think I will try a few other salons in the DC area before going back to Ozuki. But overall I was pleased with the haircut. read more

OK, I'm Japanese. So it was really easy for me to tell a stylist exactly what I wanted (since they both spoke Japanese). I had a hair cut with Shigemi and Akiko. They both took time and listened what I wanted, and did a great job. But I realized that the cut with Akiko was outstanding. Even after a couple of weeks after my cut, my hair still looked great!! They had a student discount for 20% I believe. So if you are a student, get your ID and give Akiko a try!! read more

By far the best experience I've had at a Salon in DC/VA area. Akiko was the kindest person I've met other than being a great Hair Stylist. She was super friendly, offered me drinks and gave me snacks. She didn't just hand me a stack of random magazines, she gave me a nice stack that she thought I would enjoy to read and I did. She suggested some awesome products for me to use after my visit, B:OCE & SPICE. I went for a Japanese Hair Straightening Treatment and I am super happy about it...the last thing I will be worrying about now is my hair, which is a great feeling. Ozuki Salon has a great vibe. Great music selection & awesome location in Georgetown. A hidden gem of a salon for sure. Other than Akiko, the rest of the staff were super friendly. I didn't feel like I was walking into an uppity salon with everyone staring you down. My experience setting up an appointment went smoothly, the communication was great. Price was very reasonable and the results are superb! Definitely a salon I will be coming back to when I'm back in the city...too bad I'm leaving D.C. but whenever I am back around the area this is the place to go. GO JAPAN! read more

After changing salons within 1 or 2 haircuts for the past 6 years, my hair has finally found a place to call home. Keiko is great in that she listens to what you want and executes to your expectations. Really, it's that simple! Now, my haircuts aren't anything complicated, just a simple 2-3 inch trim with long blended layers so I can't speak on her skills on anything else other than that she knows long Asian hair and how to handle it. She's also incredibly nice and cute; not too overly chatty but can carry a conversation if you're in the mood to talk. I also appreciate that she's never pushed any products on me. Prices are average to what you would expect for a salon in the area and I've never had problems with waiting. All in all, I'll be back for as long as I live in the DC area! read more

When I first relocated to DC in 2008, I would regularly saved my haircuts for my periodic bus up to Brooklyn. I then because I had a reliable and awesome haircutter whose prices were reasonable and knew her stuff. After life here began making those trips less feasible, I started going to a popular local chain of hairdressers. I was not pleased. The prices weren't great, I felt as if I were being herded in and out, they charged for cancellations, and the hairstylists who had availability had that availability for a reason. Finally one day a coworker recommended Ozuki Salon when I admired her fashionable hairstyle. Based on Yelp reviews, I picked a stylist to go with, and I've been having my hair cut by the amazing Akiko ever since. Akiko is an incredibly talented hairstylist who knows hair, knows trends, and knows which kinds will work with each other. She is super fast and gets me in and out for a wash, cut, and blowdry within a half hour usually. She's friendly, remembers what's going on in my life, and makes the time pass quickly. All my interactions with the other staff at Ozuki Salon has been similarly stellar. They never fail to call with a reminder/confirmation the day before an appointment, they never have a problem with adding cash to your credit card for tips (do NOT understand salons who can't/won't make that happen), they offer you green tea (always with a little Japanese treat along with it), they are never rude and always try to accommodate your schedule, even though their best hair stylists are frequently booked weeks in advance for prime times. You even get a relaxing little shoulder massage after your shampoo. And the prices are reasonable. I love Ozuki Salon and highly recommend it. read more

I broke my Yelp posting virginity because I HAD to write about Ozuki - specifically Keiko. I have lived here for 8 years and refuse to get my hair cut anywhere else...a nd I have tried all the "top notch" places. I will wait months if I have to go to Keiko. I am not Asian but have fine hair, and went to a Japanese salon in NY before I moved down here. So when I finally stumbled upon Ozuki, I was overjoyed. Keiko gives me the best cuts. She has an eye for detail, is not afraid to take risks, and is also honest. She knows what looks good and what works with my hair texture. One time I went to Akiko when Keiko was on vacation, and while the cut was ok, I learned my lesson. I have also run into Bang for a quick trim in a moment of weakness. Suffice to say I will not be back. Ladies of DC, get thee to Keiko. But try not to spread the word too much... I need to make an appointment soon. read more

I had Mr. Shu today and he is indeed one of the best hair beauticians I have ever had! He is kind and listens to what you want, answered all questions and resolved my concerns about my hair. He even adjusted a little after finishing cutting responding to my request. I know some beauticians push you to dye your hair even though it does not fit you (they might just want to try to dye hair or want to have more $) but he never recommends something which does not suit you or your hair type. Actually, he even disagreed when I asked him about dying hair because of my hair type. This means he is honest, trustworthy, and really cares about his customers. I would definitely come back to have him again if I stay in D.C. Wish I could give him more tips but I'm only a student yet so...maybe when I start to work. Okay, I was very skeptical about finding a place in DC that could cut my hair the right way. I've been to many other salons in the DC area in the past 4 years that I lived here, and paying twice as much at some, but always had to go back to NY to get it fixed after they messed it up. Don't get me wrong, Urban Labs, did an okay job but for $150 I expected a lot more. My hair looked nice and good but it didn't fall right. I read about Ozuki and the famous Akeiko on Yelp so I decided to call and see if I can get an appointment. Akeiko was able to see me that same day. I went in and the staff was extremely friendly and everyone was so nice. The shampoo job was awesome with a nice head massage, did not get that at any other salon here in DC! I sat down and explained to Akeiko that I wanted my bob to look a little younger and fun and not conservative. I also tried bangs last cut but they were lacking... I didn't have enough and just wanted to grow them out. She suggested that I keep them but she will give me the fuller edgier look I was going for. One more thing, I am not Asian and I have medium textured curly hair and blow it out so being able to take off weight in some sections while leaving others untouched is essential. That's why I always end up getting my haircut at Ouidad in NYC since they specialize in curly hair. Haven't found anyone who can do this here in DC till I met Akeiko!!! So Akeiko starts doing her thing and she is there talking to me and I'm really not one to talk to the stylist since I want them to concentrate on my hair but find myself in a full blown conversation with her. Before I know it she is done and my hair looks great. I absolutely love it!!! My hair falls perfectly and the layers aren't choppy looking where you can see them just lying on top of another. Before when I blew out my hair I had to manipulate it and spray it into place so that it can fall right (with the nice little bubble in the back angle back towards my neck and falling straight at the nape and than angled to the front of my face) but I don't have to do it with this cut.... it is perfect every time! Lastly, this was 3 weeks ago and it is still perfect. I think I found my new stylist in DC and may not have to ever go back to Ouidad in NYC. I just want to say thanks to the Ozuki staff and Akeiko for being so friendly and for giving me an excellent cut!!! read more

I haven't had many BAD haircuts in my life, but experienced a lot of frustration when I lived in Colorado recently because so few people had dealt with Asian hair regularly that my haircuts were always just "okay." Thus, when I moved to DC where diversity is thriving in comparison, I thought I'd treat myself and get my first real "specializes in Asian hair" haircut. Result? Just "okay." I don't get it. Maybe it's because I settled for Tony (who was -- to his credit -- kind, attentive, and meticulous) instead of the infamous Akiko. I didn't find it to be THAT expensive, so I would try again, just to check out Akiko and make sure I'm not missing out... Overall, satisfied, but not blown away.
