Hungarian Sausage
Peter T.

Fresh out of a session of wandering around my past lives, I continued my roaming in this life, and was driving down SE Foster in Portland when I spotted this gem of a market. With an odd little name, Overseas Taste is tucked off Foster in a small building with a kitschy painting on the front, and "European products" hand painted in Russian fronting the small, off-street parking lot on SE 64th Avenue. I didn't have time to stop at that moment, but we returned on a Saturday afternoon to see what was up with this place. I do love me an old fashioned meat market. (Of the four-legged kind). Walking in, your olfactory senses start to tango at the deep earthy small of myriad smoked meats, displayed in the counter and hanging from the ceiling. Peruse the small selection of shelved groceries from the former SSR's like biscuits, soup mixes, pickled vegetables and a small selection of caviar, while your are waiting for your turn at the butcher counter. Prepare to take your time when selecting your meats, as there is plenty to choose from. We went with at least a half-dozen selections, including Hungarian sausage and bulk bologna for me, and honest-to-goodness beef jerky and a smoked chicken thigh for Mrs. Burgerdogboy to nosh on in the car for the trip home. Bulk bologna you say? Yes, I had been thinking about looking for some lately, in order to introduce Mrs. Burgerdogboy to the delicacy of Newfoundland, a genuine fried bologna sandwich, which can is a thick slab of meat in a fry pan or on the grill, smashed between two slices of nutritionally-deprived white bread, and decorated with mayo, mustard, and lettuce, tomato, and if you like, a slice of cheddar. Mrs. BDB counts jerky among her personal vices, but has grown weary of the pressed, chopped, formed or extruded varieties, so we were delighted to find actual strips of beef available of the smokehouse variety at Overseas Taste. We picked up a couple of other sausages and some double-smoked bacon as well. This is my new favorite Eastern European market, although I regularly stop at Victor's, on 99w in Tigard as well. Victor's has the advantage (for us) as being both geographically close, and he also makes our favorite South African style jerky "Biltong." Specialty meat purveyors are making their way back into the mainstream, and Portlandians are fortunate to have many to choose from.

Best dried/smoked sausage and salami in Portland, you gotta check this place out if you like snacking on tubed meat! I love the chicken sausage and the Jewish salami.

First time here today! Wow! I love this place. Super friendly as you can see from other reviews…read more And! Very funny, the gentleman, as we walked in, asked if it was one of our birthdays?! Odd, as we were not in festive dress, but it was my partners birthday! He was cutting some amazing ribeye, and that's what we were looking for--he said he got us, and wow. Take a look at those steaks! Selection is good! But, a small place can't be expected to have 100s of items, but everything is carefully chosen and fresh. I'll be back for those oxtails for sure! Also, there was a very wonderful lady there with her fresh baked goods, not sure if that's a regular thing or or a pop up, but shout out to the strawberry pound cake. This is now going to be our regular spot for great meats! As far as price goes, I would say competitive with Gartner's and even some groceries, but this place is special, so you get what you pay for. Oh, and there's a big parking lot in the back, which is great on the busy street.

It's like asking for a grape and you give me an apple...so either you cut it the right way or just call it something else like scraps.

It is as though you take a step back in time, where customer service mattered and you have a butcher who cares. It doesn't matter if you get a greenhorn meat cutter or the Owner you treated the exact same with respect. They still use the take a number from the roll method. It doesn't matter the day, it doesn't matter how busy they are you are always treated like the only person in the market. Their breakfast sausage loose or in links is fantastic. I haven't found a better flavored sausage anywhere. Any of their smoked meats are to write home about. We like their soaked beef short ribs. Have your grill HOT and be ready to grill with those ribs. Their habanero BBQ sauce is delicious spicy good. If It's meats you want! it is meats Gartners delivers. I could go through each item in the cases from the ham to the brisket and tell you why each thing is better than the next!! I recently started vising a meat store by my work. I got some sausages. When I got home there was a pube in the package. In 30+ years of getting my meat at gartners I've never had anything extra wrapped with my meat. Another fine example of why Gartner's stands the test of time!! Thanks Gartner's!

I purchased some of everything, including a pie, and everything we've tried so far has exceeded my hopes. The best part is the products are sourced fairly close. No meat from Australia here. Be aware that parking is tricky. There's a bus stop directly in front of the store and there's only one spot in their parking lat and it's only for vehicles needing wheelchair accessibly. We recommended it to the table next to us, and they liked it too! - Mushroom soup was so smooth and delicious! I had the '21 Sangiovese and it was so so good. - Our server was very familiar with the menu and gave us such a good description of the specials and each dish we asked about! - The rest of the staff was very nice and they took away dishes and cleaned our table (literally wiped away crumbs) from previous ones so quick. - The overall vibe was so cool! Oh, the joy of Ox…read more It's become a staple -- the kind of place that quietly works its way into your rotation and then suddenly holds weight in your personal ranking whether you meant for it to or not. As of right now, it sits at number one for my dad and a few of my friends alike. For me? I'm not ready to crown it just yet. I need a few more visits, a few more comparisons against my usual haunts. But it's up there. No question. When I first moved to Portland almost a year ago, this was one of the spots that kept coming up. Highly recommended, spoken about with a kind of confidence that usually means it's either overhyped or the real deal. We went for Mother's Day. Then again for Father's Day. My parents loved it -- the kind of love that doesn't need explanation -- and honestly, I get it. The service is immaculate. Thoughtful, attentive, but never hovering. You feel taken care of in a way that's increasingly rare -- like the front of house actually wants you to have a good time, not just turn the table. There's a real sense of pride in what they're doing. The team feels aligned, almost symbiotic. Front of house lifting up back of house, back of house delivering in a way that makes that support feel earned. Whether that relationship is perfect behind the scenes or not, it reads as seamless from the outside. And the food -- it's just excellent. Cooked perfectly, consistently, without unnecessary theatrics. No foams, no gels, no overworked plating trying to prove something. Just honest, confident cooking over fire. The kind of food that reminds you how good simple things can be when they're done right. It's indulgent in the best way. The kind of meal that might even tempt a few vegans back to the dark side -- at least for a night. It's not cheap. Let's be clear about that. I don't go here casually, and I'm not pretending I do. Thanks, Mom and Dad. But it's the kind of place that's worth saving up for -- not just for the food, but for the experience. For some people, this might be a random Wednesday night. For most of us, it's something you plan for. And when you do, it delivers. It's special without making a big deal about being special. And that's exactly why it works.

The atmosphere is buzzing even in the small hours, making it the perfect sanctuary for a late-night craving. It's the kind of place where the smell of charcoal and cumin hits you the moment you walk through the door, setting the stage for a solid, no-frills feast. The skewers are the undeniable stars of the show, especially the chicken skin, which was rendered down to a perfect, fatty crisp. Both the lamb and beef skewers were hit with a heavy-handed dusting of traditional spices, giving them that essential kick without overpowering the tender meat. Each bite had that authentic charred flavor that only comes from a high-heat grill, and they paired perfectly with the rest of the other food we ordered throughout the night. The absolute standout, however, was the eggplant in aluminum foil. It arrived bubbling in a pool of garlic-infused oil and soy, so incredibly soft that it practically melted off the skin. It provided a rich, savory contrast to the smokiness of the meat and is easily a must-order for anyone visiting. Between the great food and the reliable hours, this has officially become my new go-to for an after-hours meal.
