It's been open a short while, but I finally got a chance to stop in and am so glad I did. The inside is beautiful and looks extra inviting. It was quiet late morning with a couple people spaced out eating / working and I was greeted by a very friendly server. He took my drink order and confirmed how small a small would be in case I wanted to change my mind. I like drip, not too bitter, but strong. This checked all the boxes! The pastries all looked wonderful, but I decided a chocolate chip cookie was just the thing to go with my coffee. Prices are in line with the area and I'll definitely be back. We popped into Overflow for a cup after a trip to Shedd Aquarium. I really like the mellow vibes here. There's plenty of space, and it felt quieter than some other coffee shops. We ordered a cappuccino and a white chocolate raspberry mocha. The mocha was slightly pricey, but the cappuccino was in line with most coffee shops. The capp was pretty good. I noticed that their foam had a lighter, airer consistency. The espresso had a very slight tartness to it (not sure of the origin of the beans), but nothing objectionable. My wife liked the mocha for the most part, except she felt the raspberry flavoring was a little too artificial. They did have some other fun seasonal coffees, like snickerdoodle. They also have teas and various food items, but some of the food items like quiche may already be sold out by the time you get there. All in all, not a bad place to stop for a cup if you're in the area. read more

So excited for this coffee shop to open in the South Loop!! This spot is huge! There's lot of space and comfy chairs. After the pandemic this would be a great spot to get coffee and a snack while reading a great book. My husband and I stopped in. We both got lattes and shared a chocolate croissant. The lattes were great, but oh my god... croissant was AMAZING. I think they make them in house, when I picked up the coffee from the side counter I saw a section where they prepare everything. I enjoyed visiting this coffeehouse. It is very cozy and there is plenty of chairs for big groups or to do work individually. The coffee was strong and flavorful and the prices are reasonable. I spent the day working from home at Overflow and it was a great experience. All of the baristas were really nice. There were plenty of seats and outlets. I am not a coffee person so I got a chi latte to start the day, and had an amazing ginger lime tea in the afternoon. There was music playing in the background but it wasn't too loud to take meetings. With more folx still working in a hybrid environment switching things up and finding a co-working space is the a good idea. I make a concerted effort to visit black owned coffee shops in every city that I go to, and when I found myself in Chicago I had to go to Overflow! It's located in the former building of Vee-Jay Records, which I was actually unfamiliar with, but I became acquainted thanks to their gallery wall of Vee-Jay Records, which also provides the label's history. I had a latte and a Lemon Poppy Seed muffin, both were delicious and I highly recommend them! I sat there working on my laptop for about an hour and a half, enjoying my coffee and muffin. Towards closing time, three people came in and began playing on the piano in the back of the cafe, just having fun, and blessing us with beautiful music, casually! It was great, and I don't know who they were, but they had talent! What a great homage to the history of the space to have a piano in the cafe, and what a beautiful thing it is to have an instrument available for people to express their creativity when inspired to do so. Came here on a Saturday afternoon to do some work. Lots of table space for those who would like a chill environment to have a conversation or also get some work done. I did have to wait longer than usual to order a coffee. I ordered a cold brew with oat milk which came out to $6.88. After paying and sitting down, the barista told me that there was no cold brew available and that they could sub iced coffee. I said yes but asked what the price difference was. The barista said she will look and refund the difference, which she did. Im glad I asked as I felt the iced coffee tasted watered down with the oat milk. Great spot to work--quiet, good outlet access, and a variety of seating options. I got the dulce de leche cold foam, which was pretty good. Sweet without being overpowering. Overflow doesn't display prices on their menu, so i was definitely caught off guard when a small cold brew came out to $8. Tldr, good WFH spot with pricey drinks. read more

I really love that this is a black-owned spot near my daughter's school so I can drop in and support a local business and get some work done . The atmosphere is a 9 and it would be a 10 if the music wasn't ass. It's like someone put on a Disney channel playlist,it's crazy as hell that this music is playing antithetical to the overall vibe,. I thought because the space was black owned finally I could go to a cafe w/ some good soulful music ...some Jill Scott or Aretha or Amy Winehouse...but nope. This one of the few times where I wish black people WERE a monolith because the music is booty. The only reason I can't give this spot 5 stars is because if you are a vegan they have nothing for you to eat here. MAYBE there is oatmeal but I feel like in 2023 there needs to be some plant based food options on a bites menu ,it's really not hard to add,lol . Chips or something. There are vegan things that everyone eat. And I'm not always plant based but my daughter has a milk allergy and when I bring her she can't have anything to snack on . And then they get to warming up the food and it smell good as hell,but your vegan ass cant have none and now your stomach kissing your back and it's too damn bad. Oh and the other thing is the prices. A small here is equivalent to a Starbucks short (8oz) and for a small latte w/oat milk, I paid $7 . And make sure you tell them to put half the sugar they normally put in there the latte's will send your ass into diabetic shock. All that said I could only take off one star because the good of this place definitely outweigh my criticisms, it's such a lovely space. Overflow Coffee began as a social enterprise/conscious coffee house maybe 7 years ago, in a nearby spot on State Street. Today (or very recently) the shop is reopened on S Michigan Avenue in a more accessible and active area of the south loop. The shop has changed ownership from those days and is now a Black Owned business, running the highest caliber coffee and homemade bakes. Serving En Masse espresso from Metric Coffee Roasters--the barista team did this roast justice. The extraction has just the right pucker to be both light and deep at the same time. If you are sitting inside (with for-here cups) I would highly recommend getting an Italian macchiato with breve. Equal parts espresso and steamed half and half. A small but divine drink that will show off this espresso's glory. I took my espresso to go, transferred to my own little cup because I like it that way. Sips satisfied. read more

The coffee was great. That's what we're all here for. We waited 24 minutes just to order though, and there were only 3 people ahead of us. Several people that came in behind us walked out due to the wait time. South loop has pretty heavy foot traffic so being properly staffed is kind of important. The food was just ok. This was a great coffee shop in the south loop neighborhood. It's black-owned, and it's in the old location of Veejay records. The owner was very nice and welcoming, and talked to us a bit about the shop before taking our order. I got the overflow, which had Chocolate, hazelnut syrup, coconut milk & cayenne pepper. It was amazing! The americano was also very good! The coffee shop had an awesome old-school vibe and was very clean, with a lot of comfortable options for seating. I stopped in this morning to grab some breakfast sandwiches. The man behind the counter was very pleasant and there was Christmas instrumental music playing softly in the background. My sandwiches were ready within 10 minutes or so, and they was nicely packaged. We each got croissant sandwiches with bacon, egg, and cheese and they tasted good. Overflow Coffee is near and dear to my heart. I used to practically live in its old location on State Street. But, this new space is even more beautiful. It's the trifecta of the warmth of the coffee, the food, and the people is that really makes this place so special. Everyone behind the coffee bar is just so sweet. The Overflow used to be my favorite but I feel like the recipe has changed and it's a little too sweet for me now. Most recently, I've started ordering the Record Row and have been really liking it. I think I'm going to try the Vee-Jay, as well. Either way, the quality of the coffee and food is always very good. I haven't had the opportunity to work from the space yet, but I look forward to doing that soon. read more

Been here more times than I can remember, I come here every morning when I take trips to Chicago and it never fails to put a fantastic start to my day. The coffee is just amazing, the staff are nothing short of absolutely lovely -- truly, an incredible group of friendly people working here -- and the ambience is perfect. It's hardly ever too busy, there are always people getting work done on computers at the tables but there's always room for more. Very chill, just a perfect spot for the mornings. I've had their various breads (my favorite is their pumpkin bread) and other pastries and they're fantastic as well as their drinks. I tried their chai once and it was great, if you're looking for a caffeine-free option. I always leave satisfied and with an extra pep in my step. Highly recommend. read more
