Ovenbird Bakery

My partner and I stumbled upon Ovenbird Bakery when driving through Independence, Oregon this summer. The charming bakery is located on the main strip downtown, and is loaded with character! There was a couple playing chess on one of the bistro tables out front, and two elderly gentlemen having a lively conversation about local politics. This is just my scene! We ordered a marionberry danish and a sugar cookie, both of which were fresh, delicious and well-priced. The staff were super friendly and offered us a sample of freshly-baked dog treats for our pug Penelope, who we had in tow. Ask the bakers about their recent visit from Abraham Lincoln, it will make for a fun story and laugh. I hope you decide to visit this gem of a bakery, and tell your friends about it too!

Gluten free apple pie is a must! Preordered for Thanksgiving. Fantastic!

Gluten free options that are amazing! I've had their pies, brownies, cinnamon and sticky buns and coffee cakes. Coffee is great there too! Yum!!!

Meal made at home served with Ovenbird's seeded baguette.

Originally planned on sitting and enjoying some goodies with a group, but I made the mistake of not seeing how big their space is. Totally my fault, but there was no way I was going to leave without buying some of the delicious looking products! Tried their seeded baguette & it was very good. I also bought a chocolate croissant which Mr. K said was tasty too. The service was excellent & I am looking forward to going back again!

Amazing Cherry Pie

My son wanted one thing for his birthday - a cherry pie. We are gluten free, so finding that was already going to be a struggle without driving to Portland, but the staff here made us a beautiful cherry pie, even though they don't even offer cherry pies on their menu. They went above and beyond to make his birthday wish come true at a reasonable price and right down the street. We'll be coming back again and again.

The Cake with the Loris tag topper was the pic I sent them.

I had passed by Sarah's booth several times in the past, just never actually stopping for a cupcake. With my sweet tooth in maximum overdrive on a sunny mid-June day, I figured that was as good a time as any to check it out. Sarah Lilly has been baking all her life, but only started selling cupcakes earlier this year. Looking at her business Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/SugarLillyGourmetCupcakes), she has several cupcake choices, rotating several flavors in and out from week to week. Sarah will have about 10 choices overall each week, with 7-8 regular cupcake flavors and about 2-3 gluten-free options. All cupcakes are $3. The gluten-free cupcakes intrigued me, and I grew even more interested when Sarah mentioned she uses black beans instead of a gluten-free flour mix. I went with a gluten-free mocha cupcake this time. It's a chocolate cupcake topped with coffee buttercream frosting, coffee sprinkles, and a chocolate-covered espresso bean. What a delicious cupcake! The cocoa powder masks the black beans, to the point where it really tastes like your everyday chocolate cupcake. Even better, the texture of the actual cupcake remains unchanged. Every component is amazingly light, including the coffee buttercream. I love the simple garnishing of coffee sprinkles and single chocolate-covered espresso bean. Regarding the "regular" cupcakes, there are several delectable options, including S'mores, Guinness chocolate, Snickers, Mexican Hot Chocolate, and Apple Spice cupcake choices. Panda gasp! Again, selections vary from week to week, and Sarah posts the Saturday Market menu on her business Facebook page several days in advance. I've only had one of her many cupcakes, but I definitely want more! I could see myself going on a cupcake bender and eating a dozen of these in one sitting. Check the Sugar Lilly booth out!

I went for a mango sorbet scoop and a strawberry ice cream scoop both Cascade Glacier brand. The scoops were generous in size. I didn't think the ice cream was very creamy but it was adequate . The mango sorbet was satisfying and.nice to have something lighter. There are two cases of ice cream , lots of choices , we neglected to look at the flavors in the second case which had many chocolate looking choices . Will have to check that out next time. The shop is perfectly located near the park and other eating establishments so a nice stop for dessert or a treat . I saw Blue Bunny and Umpqua in a few flavors, overall Umpqua is a creamier brand. The big advantage of this shop is location in downtown area and not out on Hwy 99 , it encourages walking and makes getting ice cream a more social event than the drive through options out on Hwy 99.
