I'm sure there are bakeries in the big cities that are better, so my 5 star rating could be skewed, HOWEVER, this place does make delicious, fresh baked bread that is delicious and definitely worth trying if you're on the fence about it, you won't be disappointed. read more

Oven bird is consistently good! Love their pastries and quiche. And the bread of course. And they make the best buns for BG's barbecue. And try the little cookies they make different every day. read more

Excellent bakery! Amazing people who actually care! Love this place! The gal who owns it is a friend and she is a doll!

The sourdough bread is outta this world. The sandwiches are delicious. Had clam chowder once and it changed my life.

Great food! The quiche is a quick healthy breakfast alternative for this area! All the pastries are great too, especially the cinnamon rolls with raisins. read more

This has been our best kept secret bakery for several years . Love the sourdough bread, try to buy it weekly comes unsliced. Pastries, cinnamon rolls, croissants are a favorite to pick up in morning. The sandwiches are outstanding! You might want to order 1/2 unless really hungry. See complaints about lack of more bread choices. This is a small home town bakery that seems to do an amazing variety of baked goods, so we are so happy to have it in our neighborhood. I grew up in LA, so am very acquainted with bakeries of many kinds. With new river front housing, I fear they will not be able to keep up. Already note, the later the morning the less selection or favorites are gone! read more

My daughter and I went here for breakfast when I was visiting her at WOU in nearby Monmouth. It was a charming little place with great service and delicious pastries. My daughter had the apple cinnamon roll which had chunks of real apples in it and I had the raisin cinnamon roll which was also scrumptious. Service was good and very pleasant, helpful employees. read more

Sandwiches are good. Made on their house made bread of your choice . I order half a sandwich if you want something added to your sandwich you are charged the whole sandwich price . I think that should be adjusted. Once I ordered a cup of soup to go and got mostly broth . That was disappointing. I did message them about it. read more

The highlight of Main Street Independence in my eyes. I had the luxury of living just down the street from this bakery over the summer and can I say yum?!?!!! I can't get enough of their pastries, especially their almond bear claw. Even more, ALL of the staff are wonderfully friendly, the ambiance is warm and welcoming, and the delicious smells of baked goods drifts down the sidewalk from their doors like a little bit of heaven every day. read more

Excellent sandwiches. Delicious, excellent sandwiches. Fresh bread, great meat, fresh cheese. Made to order. Here's a menu finally. Enough of these girly Pinterest Facebook Instagram pictures of pastries (They are really good pastries. Get one to go one too. Or a quiche). But, finally, I bring you a menu so you can pick your sandwich. And the price is great. I travel a lot. I eat a lot of sandwiches while traveling. And the sandwiches are good. They're not going to be belly busting big, but you don't want that when it's this delicious. read more

I had the quiche and a half sandwich and my daughter had a cinnamon roll. Everything was fresh and tasty. They were in the middle of a pretty substantial rush but the two employees working handled it well. I have a feeling I'll be back again soon. read more

Still my go-to venue in Indep for taking a nice lunch alone. Many businesses dealing with the public suffer from erratic employee behavior but here I can rely on a predictably pleasant experience. I have not tried their take-home goods and my review pertains only to a dining-in experience. read more

This little bakery is a gem in an up and coming area of Independence. I have been visiting Ovenbird for several years and it only gets better with time. I have had multiple sandwiches and their various breads sour dough, wheat and focaccia- all have been delicious. They serve great coffee at a good price and delicious soups, pastries and cookies. The owner is so kind and polite and she is willing to accommodate any order she can. I have ordered several dozen iced cookies from their place and have been delighted every time. I have taken home their frozen pizza dough both regular and gluten free and it is an easy way to make a great pizza. I am really impressed with the service and staff along with the relaxed atmosphere without trying to be overly trendy. I like the interior exposed brick it makes you feel cozy and want to stay for awhile! I only wish they were open 7 days a week instead of Tues-Sat but I applaud them for taking their well deserved rest. Will definitely be a customer as long as the doors are open! read more

Up early in Independence is a little rough if you're looking for a cup of coffee and pastry! Stumbled upon Ovenbird Bakery while walking through town before 7am. Friendly staff, delicious smells, and great pastries and quiche. Our favorite were the almond croissant - almond paste all the way through the entire croissant, and the feta, tomato, pepperoncini quiche. Delicious! Wishing we found this gem yesterday when we arrived as they are only open M-S 6:30a-2:30p. Looking forward to our next visit! read more

Excellent hummus sandwich for a very reasonable price. The veggies were fresh, with lots of variety. The bread was fantastic, I had sourdough. The service was also very good, and my sandwich to-go was ready quickly. I will definitely be back! read more

Delicious. I can speak only of their lemon cookies and chocolate croissant. If these two pastries are any indication of the rest of the menu then you need stop here and enjoy some sweet sweet treats. Really awesome spot! read more

Ovenbird catered our modest sized memorial service and it couldn't have been better! The bread for the sandwiches was full of flavor, but the fillings were also fresh and creative. I especially liked the vegetarian sandwich--not boring at all! The salads were also very tasty with a variety of olives and cheeses. I'd recommend this caterer to anyone! read more

Been getting bread, danish, and sandwiches for about 2 years now, so a review is warranted. This is one of my all time favorite places. Walking into the bakery gets you a lovely hit of aroma therapy from the fresh bread. The sourdough, wheat, focaccia, and rye are all super tasty and are made with natural, local ingredients which make the best sandwiches. The pastry section, with its danish, cinnamon rolls, hand pies, cookies, etc, are perfect little deserts which will delight the taste buds. Katie, the baker and owner, makes specialty items to order for parties, celebrations, etc. The quiches, both regular and gluten free, are delicious. The sandwiches are made to order, fresh, just they way you like. The service has always been friendly and most pleasant, even when there's a rush and multiple people are all trying to put their order in at the same time. I love to sit and have coffee, just watching the people and smelling the treats coming out of the oven. It's a nice, light, friendly little space that is perfect for a coffee and turnover on a rainy day. Absolutely no down side. I totally recommend The Ovenbird to everyone with no reservation whatsoever. Rob B. read more

In the past I flamed this bakery for the rude employees. Ovenbird is under new management and is now in heavy lunch rotation. Since the rude lady left and started Lion's Share (which I avoid), we have had nothing but good experiences with the people working there and excellent sandwiches for a great price! read more

We just moved to the area and have been here twice. Both times we had lunch, but ended up taking goodies home. Their soup is made from scratch and delicious! We had sandwiches trying both the sourdough and the baguette...both stars in their own rite! We also took quiche, pastries and carrot cake for later; always delighted in our choices! This is a great place! read more

Cute little bakery and a wonderful addition to Independence. We have a no gluten family member and can always find something delicious for her, which is great. Their prices are very reasonable and the quantities are generous. I haven't had lunch here, but do enjoy getting an afternoon pastry once in a while. So far their gluten free almond cake and normal croissants have been a highlight. I don't know if the place has wifi, but it would be a great cafe to study at for local area college students if they do. read more

I love to go here on the weekends and get quiche it's just the best. The pastries are also delightful. We went in on a Friday morning before leaving town and they were just pulling the pastries out of the oven so yummy fresh hot best in town. We will continue to go back. read more

Love the oven bird! We get lunch sandwiches on a regular basis and they are delicious, full of lettuce, onions, pickles, tomato. The bread is always fresh. They have great pastries and the staff is always friendly. They put alot of hard work into their business and it shows. Who would have thought that you could find a bakery of this caliber in a small City like Independence. The fresh bread smells permeate the street and they even have gluten-free that is outrageously delicious. Always fresh and long hours. read more

The sandwiches (you can get what you like on them) are made with homemade bread or croissants, some of which are gluten free if you roll that way. Not enough for you? Soups are fabulous and the quiche is to die for. What. still more? Don'f forget to take home a piece of pie. My favorite aspect of this bakery (because I live in Independence) is that I can go in and order croissants or pies for holiday meals, tell everybody I baked them myself, and be the most popular hostess in my family. Thanks to Ovenbird for setting up their artisan shop in our tiny town. read more

Great little bakery, with a friendly staff and a cozy atmosphere. Great coffee and friendly people too!

Excellent food! I haven't had any of the sandwiches, but I have had many bakery items and some quiches and they are delicious! The marionberry and peach Danishes are awesome, also love the cinnamon rolls (with or without raisins- both are great). Many of the quiches have a sliced potato crust which is also very good. Wonderful little bakery! read more

The Oven Bird and Katie (owner/baker) are awesome. Katie and her crew make delicious food with real, natural, local ingredients and they serve it up with warmth and friendly smiles. Offerings range from meatloaf sandwiches to wedding cakes. Katie's incredible quiche, cookies, and breads have graced the buffet table at more than one of my parties. I heartily recommend this place. read more

This place is the best bakery I've been to in the Salem-Independence-Monmouth area. It's a true gem that seems to not get the traffic that I personally feel it deserves. The fresh baked goods are delicious; in addition to being tasty, their prices are remarkably reasonable. I find myself eating here at least twice a week if I can afford it. Whether you're eating healthy or caving into your sweet side, the Ovenbird can accommodate. In addition to the good food & prices, the owner one of the kindest & hardest working people I've met. I highly recommend a visit. read more
