This is the perfect place to go if you just hit the lottery and you like the color blue. Otherwise, you'll be paying an arm and a leg and other assorted limbs for food you could get elsewhere for less than the price of a finger.
There'd be no other reason to go here. Expect to spend a good $45 per person, and of course you're mainly paying for service (if you like it when someone Lysols the table after each course like you're a dirty eater with no dining etiquette).
Making a reservation was simple enough. Very professional people answered the phone. I went with my boyfriend for a pre-Valentine's dinner on Feb 13 at around 7:30 PM, and the place was only about 30% full. Not a very good sign.
(It is also not intended for anyone under the age of 40, it seems...my boyfriend and I were the youngest people by far that night, and it showed - I thought the cigar list was actually a list of wines, and it didn't help that the dim lighting made it impossible to see anything farther away than 2 inches).
Nothing on the cocktail/drink menu (which, like most upscale places, tries to bewilder you into buying something by listing exotic names and helpful descriptive words like "brown flavor" and "red smell") seemed particularly delicious, so we passed on that. We ordered the lamb meatballs as an appetizer, which came out very quickly. They were not hot, and barely warm. However, they were quite delicious and the sauce was amazing. I don't know if the 5 meatballs we got were worth the dinero we paid, though.
The bread we got came with olive oil dipping sauce. There was a cinnamon raisin bread that I could SWEAR was just cut-up and toasted Pepperidge Farm breakfast bread (same thickness, and the bread slices looked like they were evenly machine cut). I ordered the Salmon and my boyfriend got the sea bass, after our server convinced us that fish was their specialty and we could even get up and look at the fresh dead fishies if we wanted.
The salmon was something I would have expected from a TGI Fridays. I took a bite and the salt exploded in my mouth. Not wanting to keep a great experience to myself, I offered a bite to my boyfriend who subsequently remarked that the salmon was absolutely tasteless. I was worried that his taste buds had all committed suicide, but I took a few more bites and realized that the salmon was not even seasoned evenly - some bites were like saline drips and some bites tasted like plain water. His sea bass was no better when I took a bite - it was unseasoned and watery. The tomatoes that came with my plate couldn't decide what temperature they wanted to be - some were warm, and others were cold. We were even naiive enough to order a dessert thinking it'd be worth our money; the baklava was rather unremarkable. I guess the random assortment of edibles that come with it (think tiny apples, 2 orchid petals, a two-inch long but thin chocolate stick) were attempts to justify the price.
If this place was a Ruby Tuesday's or Applebees, I would have given it a four star rating. But at these prices? Baltimore offers so much more than this. I must admit that the decor is nice, but seeing as the darkness isn't very conducive to even reading the menu, it doesn't help. All in all, I don't think I'd be coming back again. Be warned! read more
