    Azerbaijani decor
    Igor B.

Azerbaijani cuisine in Kavkaz Kebab was a very nice experience. The cheese pie was in the words of my son - "too good." Bread stuffed with meat was satisfying and addictive. The spice used was sumac. I was not familiar with it hence interesting link about the spice http://www.thekitchn.com/inside-the-spice-cabinet-sumac-67042 The soup with the mini stuffed dough (ravioli like) was welcomed and enjoyable. Deserts were interesting and different what I am used to eat. Since we were the only patrons I was a bit bossy and I asked that Azerbaijani music replaces some soft western music. It worked - with the decor, and with music, and different food experience I was able to got in touch with my inner Azerbaijanian - since we are all the brothers from the different mothers. Just like in Azerbaijan you would not expect first class service and excellent knowledge of English language but that just makes it more authentic. Do not expect that somebody will be cheerleading and saying, "how is everything guys?" Good stuff! I am so glad that I experienced it and shared it with my son.

Delicious food @my most favorite restaurant in DMV. Did not expect that this restaurant will become one of my favorite places in the DMV area. We did not have reservation and were worried they won't have available table for us, however, once we arrived they had a table ready and we were ready to place order because we were really hungry ;). Service was amazing. We did not have to wait to place order and did not have to wait more than expected to receive our orders. Atmosphere was quite because it was not really busy, a nice, calm song was playing on background and was making me spend more time in there. Moreover pictures from Baku city on the wall are amazing and very interesting. They have Kutabi, which is delicious and I had 2 portion of it. We tried, different kind of Kebabs, different kind of Soups, and different Appetizers all of them were very delicious.

The empty plate says the food was good. Very ethnic decor. BYOB with no corking fees. Live Jazz in Thursday. I'll have to come back and check that out. Everything seemed to be clean too. Service was a little weak but acceptable.

The chicken kebob lunch special, alongside our Dushes (pear) and Tarhun (tarragon) soft drinks

Yesterday my friend and I went here for lunch, and it was every bit as wonderful as I expected it to be. It always appears to be empty inside, but I've heard many sporadic rumblings about how surprisingly delicious and fresh the food is. It's also not every day you see a restaurant specializing in Azerbaijani food, so this has been on my short list of places to try for quite a while. First of all, the space is clean and decorated in an understated but attractive way. There's definitely a Mediterranean decor, but it's not over the top or in your face. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful, especially since I knew very little about what was on the menu, and our food came out quickly. When we sat down we were the only people there, and he put on music in the background which I thought was nice. (The 80's love ballads were an interesting choice, but with the dimly lit and exotic ambiance maybe they're used to helping set the mood.) :) The food itself was really the star of the show. I tried two of the bottled soft drinks they had, which were both very different from our standard American sodas and were both delicious. Dushes is a pear flavored soda that is sweet and crisp and looks like ginger ale. Tarhun is a tarragon flavored soda, which is also surprisingly sweet, and is bright, bright green. Literally, it looks like you're drinking mouth wash. Next we ordered the khachapuri appetizer, which was wonderful, as well. The version of khachapuri that they make is a mix of farmers, mozzarella and ricotta cheeses in a phyllo dough, and the appetizer comes with two large squares of them. They were cooked well, warm throughout, and weren't very greasy at all. If anything, my only recommendation would be to make it even cheesier, but maybe it's just my gluttonous American brain telling me that more cheese is always better! We also both ordered the chicken kebab lunch special. It comes with the chicken, a side salad (drizzled with a yummy ranch type of dressing), basmati rice, tandoori bread and their special house sauce. The rice and salad were both good, but really nothing out of the ordinary. The bread was delicious, kind of like a mix between pita and naan, but some pieces were burnt and more crispy than I would like. The house sauce, however, was really a stand out. It was like a tomato paste / garlic / spicy pepper combo that was sweet and savory with a kick of heat. And finally, by far the best thing on my plate, the chicken itself. I rarely order chicken out at restaurants after one too many experiences that have left me grossed out or concerned for my health. I was going to order the steak kebab, and our waiter recommended the chicken because it's a more tender meat, closer to lamb which is what is traditionally enjoyed. So I went with it because why not? This chicken was cooked perfectly, it was tender, it was spiced well but the flavor wasn't overwhelming or greasy. The chicken was really the highlight of the entire meal, as it should be! People seem to complain about the prices, and I will say that for our two lunch specials, two sodas and the appetizer we split it came out to about $30 (before tip). But I was so full for the rest of the day I barely ate dinner. So bottom line: totally worth it, and I'm happy I work down the street because I'll be going back!

The lamb kabob was garbage, it tasted like a warm sponge. Rice was also bland, so no help there.

All I can say is WOW. My dining partner and I had such an amazing experience here. First of all,…read morethe restaurant is gorgeous inside. We had an earlier dinner reservation so it wasn't as crowded at the beginning but was quite busy at the end. We tried a couple different cocktails and I loved both of mine - Ashta Affair and Asfar So Good. The Ashta Affair was sweet and creamy and the Asfar So Good was deliciously refreshing. My friend really enjoyed his Old Fashioned Date and had a fun experience trying the El Massaya Arak. For appetizers, we ordered Muhamara and Mousakhan Chicken Rolls. The Muhamara came with pita and was such a great dip. The chicken rolls were equally as good with their own sumac labneh dip we enjoyed. For entrees, we shared the Braised Lamb Shank and Makloubeh. The portions were large and the meat was tender. Neither were over seasoned and were absolutely delicious. We couldn't finish it all and saved the rest for leftovers - yum! We wanted to try their dessert and ending up getting the Ashta Bil Asal and Ruz Bil Karaz. The Ashta Bil Asal had cotton candy which made it a fun dessert to try and the Ruz Bil Karaz had a great caramelization coating. Neither were overly sweet which we preferred. It was such a great ending to our meal. I absolutely loved my experience here. Our server, Miriam, was friendly and attentive. We even chatted with the GM, Iman, who also made sure we were provided a great first experience. I cannot recommend this place enough for anyone who's looking for a boujee but amazing time!

We started with Arabic coffee and the Harra Wala cocktail--both were really good. The coffee was strong and flavorful, and the cocktail was unique and refreshing. For food, we ordered batata harra, beetroot hadiqa, lentil soup, saffron pita pie, and saffron rice. Everything was solid, but the saffron pita pie and batata harra were probably my favorites. The lentil soup was super comforting too. For dessert, we got the raspberry sorbet and baklava--perfect way to end the meal. The sorbet was light and refreshing, and the baklava was sweet and flaky. Service was great. Our server made sure we enjoyed our meal and was available to explain the menu options and checking on time to time if we need anything. Overall, a great experience. I'd definitely go back!

But it's true that this place is 4/5 or possibly worse for sitting down, so they kinda deserve it for that. Got takeout from here today and have dined in thrice before--excellent, never had anything slightly bad here. (Those who complain of bland rice must have never had the displeasure of eating over-salted polo--here, it does range from slightly under salted to perfect, but is never too salty.) When I've sat down, the service was good and servers were very polite (and kind about my attempts to speak Persian), but man I cannot get over the weird ambiance--it seems like others can't either; takeout orders predominated by at least 5:1 every time. Walking in you're nervous the place will be dirty with bad food, but it's actually neither, just dim, dated and not well maintained--please at least trash the dead roses so I also prefer the takeout experience. In descending order of absolute best to just good things I've had here: Gheymeh (!!), lamb shank (!!), kashk-e bademjoon (theirs is my favorite!), all kabobs, ghormeh sabzi (not the best I've ever had but pretty good), fesenjoon, salmon (wasn't very Persian, but good) Mast-based appetizers are a bit eh to me but they're the same here as everywhere else. I always get ice cream, it's a really nice treat. I love Persian food and I love introducing people to Persian food, so I wish this was a nicer sit down place to bring people to. I would be up here all the time if it were--there's other middle eastern restaurants northwest of and in Baltimore that I LOVE taking people to because they're both beautiful inside and delicious. But I do so love the food here.
