I was in the area and looking for some good food and this bbq place seemed like a good place to try. It is right next to a highway so easy off and easy on. Once you go in, there are two eating sections. The one in the back is cooler. I wasn't totally sure if they had AC but I was not hot. There is outdoor seating. The room in the back has music stage but I'm assuming it was for dinner and I was there for lunch. Menu had standard bbq - plates, sandwiches, combos and your typical pull pork, brisket, chicken. There is also a fish section but lady said that would take 20-25 minutes. Prices are a bit on the higher end in the middle of nowhere. I had the bbq chicken and it wasn't that flavorful. Friend of mine had pulled pork and brisket, felt a tad on the rougher end. Maybe I should have ordered the bbq ribs lol. They had plenty of sides to choose from. Had the sweet potato fries - I don't think they make it in house. They use Walmart ketchup, nothing wrong with that. This is ten minutes from Minnewaska state preserve so good eat spot after a hiking day. This place is kind of old school, not modernized at all, definitely like the vibe and feel. read more

Been going here for years. It's decent quality. Never had a bad meal here. The brisket is shredded which some people don't like. It's perfect for a sandwich. Ribs are super tender. I see a lot of negative reviews for this place on Google talking about dried out tasteless meat. I have never experienced that ( I like strong flavor) and I've been going for 12 years. The food was Ok. The brisket was too lean, dry and bland. On my online order, I asked for fatty cuts. Guess either they didn't have it, didn't see the request or didn't want to honor the request. The ribs looked and tasted as if they were boiled for hours and then finished under the oven. They did not taste as if they were ever cooked in a bbq. Cole slaw needs more mayo. I placed an online order for 2 platters and only one showed up in the restaurant system. Total cost of a brisket platter and a full rack of ribs platter was $48. Credit or cash accepted. Takeout orders do not come automatically with utensils. Customers had to ask for them. We're from NYC and were not familiar with this practice. We drove 10 minutes to a scenic spot to eat when we realized we didn't have utensils. Drove back 10 minutes to get utensils. Our order was missing a side of potato salad too. We got an extra corn bread instead. When we returned for utensil, the restaurant gave us the potato salad side. The corn bread and the spicy sauces were very good though. We used up all of the sauces on the meats. It's not likely we'll return to this restaurant when we visit the area again. I don't understand the high ratings from others. Right down the middle, nice looking place great staff, as for the food, I had the pulled pork it was bland and my wife and daughter had the ribs, again bland and not much meat on the bone. No corn on the cob which I thought strange considering it a BBQ restaurant. The Cornbread was dry. read more

I recently found out I'm pregnant and it was midterms this week so I wasn't going to have time or energy to cook for my son and I. I've gotten to-go orders from them once before so it seemed like a good option. My only purpose for writing a review (which I rarely do) is because of the very nasty interaction with Dennis. When I got home, I opened the bags that didn't contain the meat and the containers with sides had very tiny portions but cheaper fillers such as fries and coleslaw took up the predominance of the container. The BBQ sauce containers had about a drop of sauce in them and they didn't put our drinks I paid for in the bags. I called over to the Outpost and asked to speak to a manager, I was informed that there are no bosses but they would get someone for me. The man who got on the phone (he identified himself as Dennis) had a mellow tone until I told him that I was calling because the portion size of my "sides" was stingy. He started snapping with a raised voice saying, " I don't know what that means! What is it you're trying to say?! ". I replied that I just paid over $80 ($82.45 to be specific) and the portion size was ridiculously small. Dennis began yelling into the phone, speaking over me saying, "What are you even talking about?! We put the same size serving in every order! 4oz!! They're 4oz servings! It's the same for anyone! " I finally interjected through the yelling and said, "Dennis, it's ok to say you didn't know. It's ok to say you messed up." He was quiet then simply said, "ok". Dennis, if you're going to be interacting with people outside of your area, adopting some decorum would be wise. I notice alot of your friends and regulars have posted reviews to your benefit and that's lovely, however, you should learn how to interact with people who aren't saying what you want to hear. It goes a long way. Your food is decent but that whole interaction in addition to the amount of money I spent only to contend with that mess was a turn off. Then again, when you came out to greet "Patty" at the window and the family at the table, you breezed right past my son and I and I realized that there wasn't any warm and fuzzy towards people who look like us. Really fun place, beautifully redone, a classic roadhouse with a hardwood dance floor and lots of fun touches. This is a great place to dance to the live bands - so far I have heard cajun (Bunkhouse Boys) and zydeco (Zydegroove). Had an absolute blast and it's been years since I've seem so many smiling faces! The food is good, good barbecue, and good burgers. They have softdrinks, but BYOB This place is a true gift to our area. read more

We have been going to this place since they opened. We go 5-6 times a year to eat there and even take food to go. One Saturday night (11/18/23) 6 of us went there to eat. We ordered and hey brought the food at the table, the girl came again to ask if we needed anything else. After we finish we went to pay at the counter. We told the girl to add $20 on the total amount which was around $143 before taxes . We paid and sat down and continued talking . The owner comes over and with a loud voice started to ask us how was everything from the food to the service and then how was so hard to find people to work there and that the tip it was not enough. We explained him that we told the girl to add $20 on the bill. If you want NYC tips you shouldn't serve your average food on paper plates with plastic utensils with one tiny napkin and not even a glass of water. By the way on previous visits we ordered food at the counter tip the girl before the food came and even threw the paper plates after we finished. On the way out we purchased to go food and we tip the girl again. If according to you we didn't tip enough you can tell us more privately and not trying to be loud so the other tables hear you. You can't find anyone to work for you because you don't pay them . You expect your customers to pay for your employees. At the end we gave the girl $30 more . read more

I was up visiting my daughter at school. We decided to go to Cortland to see my son and found this place in the middle of nowhere. We bookmarked it and planned to stop on our way back. I am soooo glad we did. The place looks and feels like you'd want a BBQ to look and feel like. The people who worked here were super friendly and very helpful. I felt like I was invited over a friends house for dinner. Amazing experience. The food. My daughter had pulled pork and I had brisket. It was amazing and tender. I didn't notice any fat at all. And the spicy bbq sauce had just the right amount of kick to it. We both agree that every time I'm up in this area this is a must eat at place. I have reviewed before...the food is very good but I'm becoming SO disappointed that there is no effort/improvement in the plastic packaging. I have a huge stack of plastic clamshells clogging my garbage that cannot be recycled. I asked that my own dish be packed in cardboard and or tin foil and they DO have it. My three friends brought theirs and left the plastic...plus my side salad was in plastic. Come on, Outpost...you've got to care that the plastic will be on this earth for hundreds of years and our landfills are filling QUICKLY. I really like this place! We came here after a long long hike. We were exhausted and just wanted something hot and delicious to eat and after looking up a few places online, we decided that this BBQ joint is the one we wanted to drive to. The drive here was fun btw! A few windy roads through the mountain with some nice views made the ride here not bad. We drove here and it looked like it had a decent amount of outdoor seating, but we didn't stay to eat. So we got there and poked around the menu for a bit before deciding on our order of...basically every kind of meat they had on the menu except for the fish. The host was amazing and kind and was curious to us and how we ended up at their BBQ restaurant and after a few minutes of chatting about our order, we packed up our hot meal and headed back to our AirBNB to eat. We gorged our selves on meat! A half pound each of the brisket, pulled pork, a half rack of ribs, dark meat chicken, and multitude of sides basically said we had almost the entire menu! By far our favorite was the brisket. Fatty and delicious, tender and flavorful it had all the markings of great BBQ, a little bit of sauce made this meat perfect. The pulled pork was moist and tender as well. Smokey flavor was built upon the amazing meat and without the bbq sauce was great, the bbq sauce kicked it up to the next level! The dark meat chicken was a leg and thigh piece, smoked and delicious and moist. This flavor is only achievable by smoking the meat for a long time and was seasoned excellently! The half rack of ribs: perfect that is all i need to say about that. I can't say more about about it that hasn't already been said, but yeah do yourself the favor and pick some ribs up! We also had cornbread, mac and cheese, baked beans and potato salad all making our meal something we gorged ourselves on. We couldn't move afterwards and just ate up everything. Somehow our meal only came out to about $50 and it was an excellent deal. We'll come back when we're back in town! read more

OK, so I don't post bad or unfavorable reviews often, but sometimes I really don't have much choice. We ordered the two piece plate with bbq chicken and the brisket, with coleslaw and potato salad. It tasted OK, although we didn't get much brisket because most of it was just a fatty and charred skin. Overall not a lot of food for $17. What really made the decision to eat here unfortunate was that both me and my hubby got sick right after eating the food (thankfully we did a takeout order and ate it home) and we both had horrible stomach indigestion and the chitts, - excuse my language. We had an amazing lunch here today! Our hiking group of 10 people and 11 dogs enjoyed a fantastic meal! The owner came out to great us and bring water for the dogs. The server brought big pork shoulder bones for each dog, which they loved. The food was some of the best BBQ I've ever had, and the atmosphere was laid back and relaxed. We had the option of eating in the pavilion or at picnic tables by the creek. We chose the picnic tables, which were in the shade and private. I stopped in, spur of the moment and ordered take out. I got a beef brisket meal with fries and coleslaw. I was a little worried because my meal came to almost $17 which is a little pricey but I was not disappointed when I got my food. The portion size was huge and it was delicious. Outpost BBQ is a diamond in the rough out here. A friend and I found said diamond on a last minute camping trip in the woods near Lake Minnewaska. The pitmaster here knows what he's doing. I was told by my camp host this place would be good, but nothing to write home to. He was so wrong. Stopped here while holiday camping after a hike and swim that left my group of four starving. We immediately found the service to be incredible - beginning with light jokes and recommendations, eventually feeling like we were friends with the staff. The food is great - we ordered the fried catfish, rack of ribs, and pulled pork combos with every single side. Each one was a highlight on its own. The catfish is refreshing between bites of red meat. We also loved the sides - the cornbread and veggies were great. No Mac and cheese, but you forget about it when everything else rules. And forgetting Mac and cheese is hard to do. We finished off with a dessert of strawberry rhubarb pie - yum! Again with the great service - the store owner, Dennis, happily topped us off with some vanilla ice cream. What sets this place to the top is again, the service. Dennis and Vivian treat you like family and are hilarious. We're lucky they took a liking to us as they really shaped much of our experience upstate coming from NYC, and showed us how much more there is to do in the Hudson valley. First off, there is no ambiance. There is basically no service. We walked in and weren't sure if the were ready for customers, as no one greeted us. The girl at the register, where you order your food, just sat there without a word. We ordered our food, she only spoke to tell us how much to pay...$60+. I used the restroom, which was as clean as an outhouse. There were flies in the dining area, and the BBQ sauce bottles (plastic] on the tables have no tops and it had crusty sauce down the tip. The food itself was extremely bland. Onion rings were very greasy and no flavor. The mac and cheese was very dry and bland. The pulled pork was average. The chicken quesadilla had no flavor. Had to ask for the salsa, which is homemade....would have preferred store bought, as it also had no flavor. Salt and spices would go a long way to help this food out. Also, if you order a drink, just help yourself....they won't tell you that unless you ask where your drink is. Was never asked how things were, or even thanked for coming. Last year, for my birthday, my family and I were looking for a place to eat upstate and ran into this place! Wow- we found a gem! Not only is the service amazing, but the food selection is magnificent and it tastes amazing! Not to mention- the atmosphere is homey and inviting! They even brought me out a personal blueberry pie with a candle in it. This year- again for my birthday- we thought might as well come to this place again! We walk in and it is just as perfect! The menu expanded, the barn in the back is even more perfect, and the hostess even remembered us from a year later. I could not recommend a better place! This place is solid for BBQ and sides. Ribs are tender and fall off the bone. Cornbread has the perfect amount of butter and honey. You can eat indoors or enjoy the large, shaded outdoor space (tented in colder months) with great music, including live performances on occasion. read more

Dennis and his crew do an absolutely amazing job with every dish they produce. The young ladies behind the counter are always friendly and laughing. Dennis is usually there when we make the drive from Kingston and always checks on his guests. The food tho...oh my head. We've had any number of items from the bbq to the burgers to the sausages and not once have we had a complaint. Everything yummy and spiced perfectly. Starting from a food truck on the side of Route 209 to a full blown brick and mortar, Dennis has created a warm, exclusive place where all are welcome to enjoy the wonderful food that comes out of the kitchen.
