Our experience at Outfield Bar on Half Street was a bit of a mixed bag. The location is great, especially being right near Nationals Park and surrounded by so many other bars and entertainment options, but there are definitely some areas that could use improvement.
From the moment we entered, the security guard came across as a little snappy and unwelcoming. Once inside, we ordered food and several drinks at the bar. The bartenders were VERY friendly, accommodating, and did their best with what they had available. Unfortunately, the bar itself seemed surprisingly understocked. There weren't many mixer options, and there were only two tequila choices. For a bar in such a busy and popular nightlife area, I would expect a much more fully stocked bar. That is absolutely not a reflection of the bartenders--they were wonderful--but rather something the establishment should address.
The biggest issue happened when one of our friends, who has dietary restrictions and does not eat beef or pork, grabbed a pizza from &pizza nearby just so she could have something on her stomach before we continued drinking. The security guard immediately stopped her and very loudly told her that outside food wasn't allowed. While we understand that establishments can have outside-food policies, the way it was communicated was unnecessary. He went as far as telling us that if he saw her take even one piece of pizza out of the box, he would kick us out.
We were all paying customers who had purchased multiple drinks and food from the bar, so the situation could have been handled with much more professionalism and courtesy. There is also outdoor seating, so simply explaining the policy and letting her know she could take her pizza outside would have been a much more reasonable way to address it.
Overall, the bartenders were the highlight of our visit and deserve five stars for their friendliness and service. Unfortunately, the limited bar selection and our interactions with security brought the overall experience down to three stars.
