We looked at many, many venues in Humboldt County with a few requirements: we could bring our own caterer, we could bring our own alcohol, we could bring our own DJ, and it had beautiful outdoor spaces. Mitchell Grove not only checked all of these boxes but another one that almost no other venue did: BATHROOMS! Nice bathrooms! Multiple! (Seriously, this is not to be underrated). Also, you rent the venue from Friday morning- Sunday afternoon which is so so nice for DIY brides like myself. After weeks of trying to get in contact with various venues, dealing with grouchy venue managers and reading through not-so-generous contracts viewing Mitchell Grove was a breath of fresh air. The owners Will & Julie were extremely quick in their communications and gave us a same day tour. They spent so much time showing us around and answering questions and even offered to save booking our date for a week to give us time to decide. I had originally wanted to have our wedding at Pamplin Grove so that we could be surrounded by nature and the redwoods, and I feel like I missed out on none of that having our wedding at Mitchell Grove. It has big wow factor, and many of our guests were wowed by it's beauty as well. Through the year of planning Will & Julie let us come out to the venue a couple of times for planning and were always really gracious and welcoming while we were there. The weekend of the wedding they were helpful, available and did a lot of awesome behind the scenes help. Another awesome thing- they have lots of little extras available- such as chairs, various decorations, arch ways, etc. The weekend of the wedding went smoothly and I was blown away by how beautifully landscaped the entire property was. In the owners words- this is a perfect venue for "DIY-ish" brides. If you are looking for a beautiful laid back venue but also like maybe aren't into pit toilets, Mitchell Grove is awesome. If you are looking at venues in Humboldt County, at least tour Mitchell Grove before making a decision!

City of Eureka as a visitor [Eureka CA]…read more We saw and did a lot more in the City of Eureka this time around when we revisited during the extended Memorial Day weekend 2025. Each below have their own a separate review. New to us: * Sequoia Park & Garden - the garden featured a wishing well and a gazebo. Lots of flowers in bloom which is generally between May and September. * Sequoia Park Zoo and The Redwood Sky Walk - The Sky Walk is accessible only through the Sequoia Park Zoo. Enjoyed both attractions! The suspension bridge was my highlight but I also really liked seeing the flamingos! * Fort Humboldt State Historic Park - cool history where future U.S. President, Ulysses S. Grant, served as a Captain and commander of all Union forces during the Civil War. This place is said to be haunted. * T.J. Maxx - just passing time before movies. As we were about to leave town to head back home we stopped by downtown on Memorial Day. Many businesses were open including: * Old Town Square - historic charm and for the most part I didn't see too many homeless people on the streets as many have mentioned in their reviews. We came around 10:00a. * Dick Taylor Craft Chocolate - located right on the waterfront of Humboldt Bay. Sampled some artisanal chocolates and enjoyed a Browned Butter Rice Krispy Treat from their cafe bar. * Los Bagels - tried their Scrambagel for the first time. Very good in organic sesame seed bagel. This is a cafe with Mexican and Jewish influence. Revisited: * The Donut Mill - Ham & Cheese Croissant for breakfast * Broadway Cinema - "The Last Rodeo" [an Angel Studios production] * Brick and Fire Bistro - featured in DD&D twice... first one in and we got to sit inside the main dining room this time. Problematic situations aren't your problem if you don't apply yourself to them ,housing is reasonable for California It does not have some of the general issues as often is other spots in the area such as power outages or poor connectivity It's kind of small but there is always a lot going on if you're into roaming and budgeting, actually fairly quiet at night There are a few negatives, quite a bit of homelessness and addicts but that's everywhere now. I've been homeless so it doesn't bother me aside empathy Thank you eureka police for being respectful and empathetic to people and not robbing shooting and beating people on a regular basis people here complain about the police far too much. I blame that on addicts and hippies and some old anti police attitude mess. I used to sell drugs in other states. If you're visiting Mad River Beach along the Redwoods Coast, you can't miss the Mad River Bridge!!…read moreIt's got a great aesthetic - perfect for budding photographers. It's easy to access - and if you're there in the spring season, there's a fantastic wildflower field right across from the bridge entrance! Not to mention that it's a hotspot area for birds that migrate seasonally from the Arctic! I had no idea - was a very welcome surprise! The bridge is actually part of the California Coastal Trail - it's at the start of the Hammond Coastal Trail portion. And it's got an interesting history too! This area is know as the "Arcata Bottom" and apparently the area was widely used for dairy farming back in the late 1800s and is largely unchanged since those days! It's very bucolic! People have been crossing the Mad River at this location since 1905. There are several fun info signs around the bridge entrance and even trail maps. There's even a small parking area to the right of the bridge entrance. It's unpaved but in good condition at the time of our visit.

A grand old art deco 1930s movie theater now in its 75th year standing but in much need of a face…read morelift. The components are all there - this beauty just needs a little help. On the national historical registry since 2010. the wife and I were there one evening recently for an ArMack Orchestra performance, the sound within the auditorium is very good and I'm sure in her prime she was a grand venue, but this building has definitely seen better days. The first thing I noticed was the "mushy" smell when you walk into this large space - mold, dust and disrepair are apparent. The art deco interior is still very much there and intact - mostly just needs an update after all the years of neglect. Great stylized cut glass wall sconces, and stylized cut glass overhead light fixtures along with the lobby entrance and foyer details reveal just how great this grand structure was back in its day. High ceiling soar overhead and two huge murals - left and right of the stage reminded me that this used to be a place where people in the town gathered regularly in a different era. This space is now a multicultural facility for the performing arts and monthly movies. Also available for rent for special events, weddings, parties, concerts, etc. This is a special place within old Town downtown Eureka that needs to be used to keep her alive, and is in need of some loving restoration to keep around for future generations. Still a 4 Star venue for all of its awesome architectural details that still exist after seven plus decades. And, a venue that has the potential to be a true 5 star gem - with a little help. 00127

They feature awesome programming like "Science on Screen," when science lectures accompany sci-fi films, and live scores by musicians such as the Invisible Czars. Visiting the theater for their monthly noir night has become one of my favorite activities since moving to the area. Definitely grab a local beer, cider, glass of wine or speciality cocktail while viewing a flick--all proceeds go toward the theater's restoration. Rumors has it that the theater will soon have it's own deco Air BnB for rent upstairs--can't wait to recommend it to out of town visitors :)
