It is just under 2 miles to hike the entire loop and is a pretty easy trail to walk on. This hike provides some of the best viewpoints of the Pacific Coast. The trailhead starts off in the parking lot. The Trinidad Head Memorial Lighthouse (replica of the original) was recently moved near the parking lot and you are able to walk up and see it. It was a beautiful morning when I hiked this trail. I loved the picturesque view of the harbor with all of its sea stacks. During certain seasons, you can spot migrating grey whales. Trinidad Head Trail Loop has a few benches along the way if you want to sit and relax and enjoy the view. There is also a stone cross on the trail that commemorates the Spanish explorers that landed here in 1775. In addition to the views, I enjoyed going through the little greenery tunnels and seeing all the pretty flowers on this hike. The lighthouse was commissioned in 1871 and is still currently active.

Monument for those buried at sea [Trinidad CA]…read more I wasn't sure if this Yelp page was for the concrete memorial lighthouse (or is it a replica) or of the one off of Edwards Street. Either way both are remembering those who perished at sea. The memorial on Edward's Street is a pyramid shaped marble slab engraved with sea gulls and the words "Lost At Sea," with names listed on the plaques. As more names were added through the years additional plaques were placed along the adjacent cement retaining wall. There were so many names it was sad to see and reminded me of the movie "the Perfect Storm" [2000] with George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg. The movie was based on a true story where the boat of the crew of six was caught in a storm and disappeared with no survivors. In 2012, we saw the memorial in Gloucester, Massachusetts inscribed with the names of those men. So sad. The memorials in Trinidad are free to visit. It looks like the lighthouse has moved a couple of times but it was at the harbor area where we saw the lighthouse and fog bell which served as a permanent location for the monument. Both memorial locations were adorned with wreaths during the Memorial Day weekend. The Axel Lindgren Memorial Trail on Edwards Street was currently not available due to erosion. Review #3777

Additional plaques were placed along the adjacent wall as names soon outgrew the smaller monument. There used to be a replica of the 1871 Trinidad Head Lighthouse here. It housed the original Fresnel lens and the bronze fog bell from 1898. But it was moved to Trinidad Rancheria Harbor a few years ago due to erosion. I was moved by the memorial when I passed it on a walk one early morning. Each year on the last Sunday in May, this community gathers to remember the names of the people recorded on the plaques.

The Buhne Building in Historic Eureka Old Town Downtown was built for Captain Hans Henry Buhne in…read more1884. Captain Buhne was a very wealthy man credited to be the first captain to pilot settlers across the Humboldt Bay. He was also was a business merchant/dairyman/tugboat captain/ railroad & timber investor and Vice President of local bank. Captain Buhne hired the architect firm of "Kenitzer & Raun" to design his building. The architectural design style was called "Italianate Renaissance Revival" which was a popular style at this time "Victorian Era". During the late 1800's the building was home to a number of business, some being (Humboldt County Bank/US. Land Offices.) Today the first floor is occupied with boutiques and restaurant. The second and third floor remain offices and apartments. The craftsmanship of the interior as well as the exterior are stunning ! I love all the detailed workmanship of this period ! It's not just a lighthouse, it's actually a California Historical Landmark with so much character and history. You can only access it during low tide, which makes it even more magical (and a bit adventurous!). There are signs warning people not to cross during high tide and seriously, don't do it. The ocean can get wild out there! I went on a Saturday evening after 5 p.m., and the tide was already too high, so I played it safe and came back Sunday morning. Totally worth it. We had our coffees up there, and it honestly felt like being in a romantic movie scene. The weather was perfect, the ocean breeze was fresh, and the view was absolutely stunning. The lighthouse itself has such a cute, storybook charm. It even survived the 1964 Alaska earthquake and tsunami, which adds this incredible layer of resilience and history to the place. I didn't get to see any whales this time (though I heard you can spot them sometimes!), but there were plenty of seabirds flying around, adding to the coastal vibe. There's a park nearby with parking, so it's super convenient. And fun fact, according to their website, you can actually have your wedding there! How unbelievably romantic is that? If you're ever in Crescent City, take the time to visit Battery Point Lighthouse. Go early, bring a coffee, and just soak it all in, it's one of those places that makes you fall in love with the California coast all over again.

During tourist season it probably gets filled quickly but if you go like when we did It's spacious and you don't have to experience the full brunt of tourists in full force. The Big Tree isn't far from the parking lot at all and is an easy walk to admire and get in some photos of the tree. The Big Tree is free to stop at(at least when we went in November it was) so that's a nice little bonus in an area where most attractions need an admission paid to utilize their attractions.

It is estimated to be around 1500 years old. Big Tree is located in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park off the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway. There is a small parking lot nearby that you can pull into. The walk to Big Tree is only a few minutes with signs pointing you the way. Even though Big Tree is the center of attention, many other equally impressive trees can be found on nearby trails.

This has been a small community gathering point since 1932, is located on the road named after it, in Dow's Prairie. The Grange Hall sits directly across the road from the Dow's Prairie school. The Monthly Pancake breakfast and Rummage sale are usually pretty good events and it serves as a fund raiser for the Grange. This community breakfast is the third Saturday of every month from 9 am till noon. With two choices for breakfast available - all meals include a juice and apple sauce - Large = 5$ (two eggs, two pancakes and breakfast meat of your choice and a morning beverage) and Small = 3$ (one egg and one pancake, breakfast meat and beverage) and children under the age of 3 (Three) eat for free - you can not beat free! The HISTORY: The charter was obtained on December 14, 1932. On January 18, 1933 Henry Miller was selected as the first Grange Master of Dow's Prairie Grange. Dow's Prairie Grange met at Clam Beach Hall on May 17, 1934 and was there until approximately 1942 when the current grange hall was built across from Dow's Prairie School. The land having been purchased for $50 from Hammond Lumber in 1938. The hall was partially built with recycled timber from lumber company buildings. This is a neat piece of Nor-Cal history behind the Redwood Curtain and is a cool building available for rental for special events and monthly on the 3rd Saturday morning has a fun community breakfast that is open to the public.
