We had just had brunch at the Cafe Brio and decided they would try doing their drawing in the Arcata Library. The librarians there were the most rude individuals we have encountered in our travels. I feel sorry for the city of Arcata to have these individuals representing their city. Needless to say we won't be returning, and it definitely left us feeling unwelcome in this city.

We've return to this library thanks to Shoshanna in the Children's library. We hear so many good…read morethings about her in our community. She is a light of sunshine, kind, creative, supportive, and very helpful. Her optimism and positivity is priceless. Our County of Humboldt is lucky to have her. The children's area has opened ended play and nature inspired stations friendly for young children. We love the new playground however I wish there was a way to close the gate because it is open to the street and people drive fast through that curved corner. In addition, there are sometimes men sitting at the table but they don't have any children with them. Sometimes this makes me feel uncomfortable as a mom with young kiddos.

The McKinleyville community library is a part of the Humboldt county library system. A very small…read morefacility that serves as a great local resource. Located on Pickett Road across the packing lot from the Azalea senior center and adjacent to Pierson park. This satellite facility is supported by the local community, and has a great volunteer staff. As well the "friends of the mckv library" have a monthly book sale fundraiser to help support this facility and help to keep it open. The monthly book sale attracts hundreds of book enthusiasts every month. A small but very well stocked reference section at this library. As well you can order books to checkout anywhere within the county system and have the book delivered to this branch making it easy to pick up for the reader. The students specifically pick Humboldt because they had abusive childhoods or trauma they wanted to get super far away from while still having in-state tuition. This leads to highly traumatized young adults flocking to one area and being on their own for the first time. The bullying, harassment, several mental instability, etc. of some of these students is shocking and almost everyone I know has an extreme story of harassment due to this. PLEASE pick anywhere else. Yes, you may have a wonderful time and get lucky - but this school is far more likely that others to leave you with severe trauma, especially when paired with how highly isolated it is from outside support and resources.

Beautiful campus, great class sizes, interesting people, but a strange educational experience…read more One department claims antiracism as a core value, yet two professors either allowed racism to occur or participated in racism in class. Some professors that you think would be anti-sexist participated in sexism against men. And one professor was a bit too touchy-feely. A few professors in one department did not hold class during the Pro-Palestinian/Anti-Genocide occupation, and others would sometimes suddenly not hold class due to "personal reasons" or unpreparedness, or let people out early (like one professor letting students out 30 minutes early every class). Like any life-changing experience, I have good memories and bad ones. However, the bad ones were of the hypocritical type and should not have occurred. Plus, students are paying for their education--giving them "free time" is not a freebie...students are paying and going into debt for those "freebies." But other than that, the school is a pretty chill environment for learning.

I have been going to tin can since they were in their old location and I used to read books in…read morethere non stop. I loved the old tin can, the community spirit and friendly staff. Today I took a half dozen new books in to get credit on, and was informed that exchanges are by appointment only. No one else in the store, one clerk, 10am, no interest at all in being helpful, just doing his "job" and following the "rules" The old tin can is gone, next time I have extra books I'll donate them to Miranda's rescue.
