I have very wonderful memories of this fantastic bookstore, nestled in the heart of old town Eureka. Great selection of books from science fiction, mysteries, literature, poetry and even sections with more rare books and local Humboldt County history. There are multiple floors of books to explore and you can easily spend a day within the store talking about books with the staff, shopping for books, and living and breathing books. If you're traveling through Eureka and wanting a wonderful literary adventure, stop in old town and explore the huge variety of antique shops, used bookstores and wonderful niche shops that the city offers. I absolutely love this beautiful bookstore, and let me tell you, it is the perfect picture of a vintage, cozy book shop! The atmosphere is so welcoming, and I always find myself completely immersed in their amazing selection of books. I'm always there for at least an hour. The prices couldn't be better, seriously better prices than Amazon so buy local! They will special order you a book if it's not there! Whats always really stood out to me, though, is the excellent customer service. I spent over an hour browsing, and I could have easily spent all my birthday money there! A lovely blonde woman in a pink floral dress and glasses helped me with great recommendations for Romantasy and SciFi books, and I must say, she was such a delight. We had the best conversation about our favorite reads, and her recommendations were spot on! I know I went home with at least 1 of her suggestions that I absolutely can't wait to dive into and I'm already planning my return trip this Friday to grab some more- I just can't resist! I genuinely believe the sweet lady who assisted me deserves a raise; her passion for books and caring demeanor made my visit unforgettable! I came in on my birthday, and it turned out to be the best part of my day-- and I was already having an excellent day! This place is a must-visit for any book lover. Amazing collection! Very progressive store if you haven't noticed by the pictures already shared. I was pleasantly surprised by the array of books they had and cute stationary. Staff was really helpful and you can tell they were incredibly integrated in the community. An old couple came in while I was shopping and they greeted them by their names and provided them a place to sit by the window while they browsed some books. I was wandering around downtown Eureka and stumbled into this bookstore. I'm a sucker for old bookstores. Eureka Books has been around since the late 80's and sells new, used, and antiquarian books. The bookstore itself is two levels and has books and ephemera in all fields and price ranges. I enjoyed sitting and browsing through a couple books while I was here. Out front is a Zoltar fortune teller machine if want to know you future or become big like Tom Hanks. read more

Last weekend we went visited Eureka Books Historic bookstore for the first time, at least myself. My husband has visited before but did not get to enjoy the time as he was shopping for special occasion. This time, he invited me to go with him because he knows how much I love reading and finding great books. When we arrived, they were getting ready for the Arts Alive event and also it was the new owner's first anniversary of purchasing the bookstore. First thing captured my attention, was the layout, and the lighting. It was very open, spacious, and bright. Many bookstores and libraries dim the lights, but this one was natural light and nice light distribution throughout the floors. Another cool thing I found, that they had special collections and historical books. I enjoyed walking through inhaling the smell of fresh book pages, browsing through the new and old books. My husband and I set down by the cook books area, we both love to cook. And we found lots of amazing international cook books. We even found some of our favorite chefs cook books. Then we traveled to the second floor where we just sat down and read through books we picked from different genres like fiction, poetry, true crime, and biography. The was live music when we visited because of the event happening in town, but in general my husband said its usually calmer and more relax atmosphere. We are absolutely going back to spend more time enjoying the books and to explore more around the bookstore. read more

It should come as no surprise that the old-timey Old Town part of Eureka has an old-timey bookshop. After all, they describe themselves as "one of the last classic antiquarian bookstores on the West Coast", and as if they were begrudgingly acknowledging the digital revolution, they just made their inventory available online in the last few months. What was more surprising and rather reassuring though was how expansive their inventory was. They offer books and ephemera. Ephemera? Is that another word for crap? OK, maybe it's memorabilia. Just what I needed. They also have tons of used books, so there were good discounts to be found. And it's all framed in a vintage Victorian storefront. Yep, old-timey. Perhaps my favorite place to spend a Saturday! The building is beautiful and they have a great mix of new, used and collectibles. Check this place out during Arts Alive! and they may have refreshments and a local author you can chat with and pick up their book. I also like to buy journals and journaling supplies here every once in awhile. Staff are all amazing and I look forward to stepping inside when ever I'm in old town. read more

This place is really lovely, and I love coming here, But....I'm sorry, but they allow non service dogs in the shop. Which, I'm sorry to say, but it is illegal. I say this as a disabled person. People should note that people's pets have been attacking disabled people's real service dogs, resulting in said service dog being confiscated. This is a serious deal. It is illegal to impersonate a service dog. This includes 'Emotional Support Animals' that are NOT service dogs. The law does not allow them inside businesses full stop. The laws only cover some housing. Faking a service dog can get you federally charged with a crime. These scams need to stop, because they are causing harm. Pets are NOT allowed in businesses by LAW, and by law, they must always be kept on a lead. Many people are also severely allergic, and such people are protected by disability laws also. These dogs were scratching, and shedding all over the store. It's not sanitary. It is a disrespect. I have to reconsider coming here again, unless these lawbreakers are stopped. read more

This is one of the nicest bookstores I've ever been to. The building it is in is very old and there's a ton of beautiful architecture. The inside is two stories with a walkway around the edges, so the whole middle part is open. There is a huge selection of books, both new and used at reasonable prices. The staff is super friendly and very knowledgeable. They also have records, audio books, planners and notebooks. I guarantee you'll find a book you like, and if not it's a beautiful building to check out. read more

Mostly nonfiction stuff but the selection is insane. So much cool stuff. I got a few film theory books and some old books of Allen Ginsberg poetry. Prices aren't too high either, many of the used books were priced around $10. There's a whole wall of old pamphlets and magazines which is sick. read more

I like Old Eureka better each time I'm there. Part of the reason is they have lots of funky period places like Eureka Books. This is a lovely bookstore located in an expansive, well-lit location with a great mix of new and used books. The store's energetic and competent staff will help you find a title or assess your used books, as the store does accept used books for store credit/trade. Beyond the excellent array of titles, one can find journals and other small gifts, as well as an excellent selection of cards. Quite fantastic -- not just good for Eureka, but a downright excellent and well-rounded antiquarian store featuring interesting rarities, local interest, general interest, academic and scholarly. Oh, and marked-down bargain books! My only criticism is that some of the sections were sparse -- philosophy was lacking some of the standard authors, and could probably benefit from some book-sale or thrift-store buying -- but the store is only a couple years old, and as with all bookstores, the problem of too few books will shortly turn into the problem of what-do-we-do-with-all-these-books. read more

Beautiful book store in old, gold-rush era style building. Nice selection in certain categories, but not in every category. Some great used and old books mixed in with new and recent selections. Sections on the West and History seemed particularly nice and unique. Deep shelves upstairs in the trade paperback sections for genres like fantasy and sci-fi. Nice people. Great atmosphere. One of the best bookstores I've been to. I am a specific type of reader because I study 18th century British and Irish culture so maybe my interests are overly represented here. They had these great old original maps for sale which I loved. They also were selling original images from Harper's Weekly-- awesome! I also found several unusual academic books, hardcover for about $10! For the size of the bookstore, I was pretty blown away by what they did have. They have an intelligent and savvy buyer. My husband didn't even 'allow' me upstairs because I had already targeted so much on the first level. Great, great, great bookstore. read more

Best book store in Eureka. Carries used and rare books, but also a smattering of new books as well. The new ones are mostly by local authors and about local subjects. If the book you are looking for has anything to do with Humboldt County, this is the most likely place to find it. Eureka no longer has a Borders or any other type of chain store that carries a large variety of new books, so if you are looking for a new(ish) title in Eureka it will either be here or you will just have to buy mail-order. As others have noted, this store doesn't have the greatest variety on the planet, nor will you find a bunch of cheap, fiction paperbacks cluttering the aisles. Most of the fiction available will be collectible, older titles (and printings) in hardcover. I believe that the majority of their books are non-fiction though. They have a particularly good selection of books on history, most especially local and state (California) history. It's a great place to browse around and the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. The only downside worth mentioning is that prices are usually higher than you will find for the same titles online and sales are obviously subject to California and City of Eureka sales taxes. That is no fault of theirs, but at 8.25% (as of this writing) it is enough to give one pause if you are spending more than $50 or so. read more

One of the best known, most professional antiquarian bookshops on the North Coast. From literature to local ephemera, surprising items are a commonplace find. They are members of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of American with a code of ethics which basically offers a lifetime guarantee on anything you buy. The staff is generally quite friendly, prices are fair (OK maybe a little high), and you get a big city bookstore feel in a beautiful historical building in Old Town Eureka. Visiting here a few weeks ago, I was taken by the variety of titles the store holds, from some old treatises, to some of the latest fiction, old maps, and even sheet music. I thought some of the newer titles were just a tad pricy. Some really interesting books on travel to be found here, local, national, and beyond. And speaking of local, nice to see a good swath of local authors represented on the shelves. I also did appreciate a selection of greeting cards with North Coast photography (not sure I really did see any postcards). Certainly a place to visit while in Old Town Eureka. read more
