Look. It's Humboldt County. I didn't expect a legitimate game store and this place delivered. I was impressed by the selection, offering board games from the classics to the traditional to the innovative. The store is in a wooden structure that looks like it should hold power tools, but never judge a book by its cover (or a game). We have bought several birthday and Christmas gifts here and the staff are some of the most knowledgeable about board games of varying types. We have also been introduced to new games here, and the prices are competitive with other game stores across the country. Instead of jumping on Amazon and enriching Jeff Bezos and his union busting ways, drop in to NCR and support local games stores. Also, Jesus Christ is Lord! One of the best gaming stores I've been to. Super friendly and great amount of product in stock. Found some hard to find Magic the Gathering draft boosters. They had a great selection of current and past sets. They also sell Pokemon, Warhammer, and a bunch of other stuff I didn't even have a chance to look at. SELECTION: Not the best selection of comics but games is in the name of the store and they do that well. They do have a good selection of current comics and they are kept in nice upright displays. But the primary focus is on games and they do that really well! They feature Magic primarily among CCGs but are current with Pokemon. Didn't see other games up front. Tons of role playing and miniature games. SERVICE: A+! Friendly, knowledgeable and ready to help. What more can you ask for? COST: Good! with one of the most friendly and knowledgeable people behind the counter. I asked a zillion questions and everything was answered to the best of his ability. The store had a massive selection and a far wider variety of games than any other store in the area. I ended up leaving with the Cities and Knights Expansion to Settlers of Catan and countless future games that I plan to buy soon. Fast forward to the evening and I open the shrink wrapped from the manufacturer game. I was missing a sticker pack. A really simple error by the manufacturer and not the end of the world. Regardless after spending a good chunk of money on a game I want the whole package. I contacted North Coast Roleplaying about how to resolve the issue and have been given the best service. I have had to jump through a few hoops and make several calls to the store. Each time though I have been assisted and helped far beyond my expectations. I know that if I am back in the area and in need of games this is the first place I will go, I would likely choose this just for their selection alone but the service and assistance truly seals the deal. Today May 3rd, is Free Comic Book Day all across the country. The publishers send out free issues to any comic book retailer that wants to be a part of it, and North Coast Roleplaying claims to be a part of this. The truth, as I came to find out, is this guy claims they do Free Comic Book Day as a way to draw in customers. He does NOT distribute the books that the publishers put out for Free Comic Book Day. Instead, he throws a couple of boxes of old Halloween freebies and Preview books that are free every day of the year. I did witness him speaking to one of his "regulars" and telling him that he had all the issues that I and many others were looking for, and that he should "come back when all the transients have cleared out." What does this tell me? He's either full of %@*$ or wants to keep all the free comics for his friends. Either way, it's not in the spirit of the day that these publishers are intending. While I was looking around at other comics, I heard the owner being very rude to some of the card game players that were coming in to play. Who treats their customers like that? You'd be better off starting your own club in a basement and ordering your card packs online. I will see what I can do about reporting this guy as a Free Comic Book Day fraud. He wasted more than a few people's time, and just seems very bitter and jaded about the entire industry. Sorry it's not going to make you a millionaire buddy, but I've been to plenty of shops where the owners are just happy to be able to work in an environment that means something to them. Apparently not the case with this guy. I'll just stick to getting all my comics digitally, through the publishers. When these guys become a casualty of the digital comic industry, I won't lament the loss. read more

Least friendly local gaming store I've ever visited. Back when I frequented this establishment (which I did because it was the only game, as it were, in town), I was essentially labeled as the dreaded "Fake Geek Girl" on the spot (note that I was a paying customer and gamemaster) and regularly snubbed, insulted, and lied to by the proprietor. Unless you either actually like being treated that way, or are one of his cronies (as he seems to be under the impression that he's running an exclusive club for his buddies as opposed to a business) and thus exempt from it, I'd suggest taking your business literally anywhere else. read more

Nerd alert! Northcoast Rollplaying took over Comic Castle for comic books a couple years back and I was an avid weekly buyer at the Castle for nearly a decade, so I decided to check out NCRP this afternoon. Now I'm not much of a gamer, but I ended up buying a weird zombie rollplaying game instead of my usual comic book fare, so they're doing something right. The 14 year old we brought in bought some awesome back issue comic books (DC, Batman, JLA), and the owner/counter person was attentive and totally knows his stuff. In the back room they have some stand-up arcade games including Rygar and Gauntlet too, so that is an added plus. A delightfully random selection of games bump this review up from 3 stars to 4, but for some reason they are only from like noon until 5, so I have no idea who they expect to be able to shop here. We only stopped by for a quick visit and hoped to spend more time there before our vacation was over, but we were never in the area for the few hours they were open each day. Oh well. And yeah, considering they were the only shop we could find in the area on Free Comic Book day, I was pretty bummed we couldn't get a free book or two for my kids but I won't hold that against them. read more

To put it bluntly, I have been here on several occasions, but each time left feeling disappointed, so I've since stuck with doing all my orders online. And considering I read a good 15+ titles a month, it's not a light order. I've wanted to give this place a chance but between not carrying the title I'm looking for, telling me it would take months to get my pull list set up, the so-so customer service and miniature hoards of mouth breathers that loiter around the store, I have to give it a permanent write off. Really sucks that it's the only option up here, and really sucks that the owner obviously cares a lot more about catering to his own neckbearded, fedora wearing gamer pals than creating a comfortable space for all nerdfolk. read more

After my third experience here, the last for what was supposed to be Free Comic Book Day, I am disappointed in what the shop is. The owner does a fine job in keeping up to date on the latest and highly anticipated books, and can order what you want if it is not physically in the store. At the same time, I and a friend saw and heard the owner deliberately holding back on the FCBD releases for his regulars and put out old free books from last Halloween for the rest of us "freeloaders" and "vagrants". This attitude turned what I hoped a special day as a father growing up with comics now wanting to teach my kids the same joy I had. Guess I find other avenues to do that. read more

great shop, great employees and great selections, Barry is the man!! But i'm writing this review for the cry babies that didn't get their free comics on comic book day. 1st, Barry pays for those comics, so when you walk in with your kids and grab those "free" books and walk out without buying anything thats lame. you get how ever many books you can for free but you won't buy your kid a $3.99 or $2.99 book? 2nd, i spend about $30 a week on comics there, so when Barry asks me what comics i want on free comic book day i tell him and he hooks me up. why does he do that? cuz im a regular, Matt C, you probably never even walked into NCRP until it was free comic book day and wanted to get some free stuff lol you're the one whos full of BS. 3rd, Free comic book day is the craziest day in NCRP, and Barry doesn't need to do it if he doesn't want too, but i'm happy that he does. get there when the doors open and you will get the 'free" comics you want or become a costumer and not a crybaby who just wants free sh!t! thanks for the hard work Barry, see you Thursday! read more

Barry and his counter guy get a bad rap sometimes and it seems like everyone I meet has a story where Barry is a jerk. I've never had a bad experience at NCRP. they usually have whatever I am looking for and if not they are more than happy to order. Sure they run list price but they are friendly and have played many of the games in store and can explain them. Great for novice geek and expert alike. read more

Absolutely fantastic comic shop. The owner has always been very polite to me and my friends. Hooked me up with regular Rick and Morty and has always been willing to look up any oddball titles I threw at him. The store has plenty to offer for tabletop gaming as well as comic collecting. The prices aren't low but the fact that he's the only comic shop in town is an obvious reason why. read more

My husband and I agreed to never step foot in this shop again. We went a few weeks ago to buy some Magic cards. This guy NEVER has any Planeswalkers, so don't even bother asking. He was playing WoW while I was looking at the 20c cards. My husband asked what class his toon was and the guy didn't know what he meant. Hubby asked if he was doing a raid, the guy (who claimed his toon was level 90) didn't seem to know what a raid was. Two weeks later, we came back. We both looked at the 20c cards while hearing the owner shouting and cussing into the phone about his relationship problems and something about his house. I approached him to pay for the cards I'd picked, and he didn't acknowledge me at all and continued his phone rant while ringing up my purchase. Another two weeks after that, we went back one more time because my husband was looking for some specific cards. Luckily, the owner wasn't there. My husband spent three dollars on two cards and we left. He checked Star City Games on his phone and discovered that both the cards together were worth less than a dollar. We won't step foot in that shop again. Besides all the crap, it's just not worth risking your vehicle trying to get in and out of the tiny lot. read more

A Solid comic book store, if you want something you should call ahead to reserve it as books sell out quick! Good variety of new and old comic books, the owner is a nice guy he isn't always extremely helpful which is why I'm giving this place 4 stars. We found the store by accident as we were walking by on a brief visit to the city and only left in 2 hours with a heavy bag of everything. It's a universe. No. It's a multiverse and a complete guide to the multiverse. Two walls of Marvel comics ranging from original "30 cents" prints to multivolume complete collections. Guides to the Middle-Earth, medieval and Industrial age England, WWII history and military campaigns from Alexander the Great to Iraq and Afghanistan. Three walls of board games plus one more of bits and pieces to make your own from paper sheets and steel cable to dice of all colors and shapes and plastic characters to paint. Old video game machines. Extra form packs for Paranoia. Extremely, incredibly, unbelievably friendly, helpful and welcoming crew. Everyone in our family and traveling party of four found something to stumble upon and instantly fall in love with, and we were still discussing my son's table game design on our way back to Mountain View. read more

Now, I've gone to NCRP a bit for as long as I can remember, heck, even since their old location. They're always really nice and know what they're talking about, and have no problem explaining complicated things to you. Just recently I was starting to get into D&D, and I only had my dad's stuff, so he explained to me the differences between the different editions and why 3.5e was better than 1e and stuff. It really makes going and looking for super nerdy stuff fun, and it makes it easier to shop without the stigma attached to d20s and old comic books. read more

I love coming here with my buddies every month or so for comics. If Barry is out of stock of any new releases he will gladly order them for you. He sells older comics for a dollar a piece and If you take the time to search them you can really find treasures. If you are into more indie releases this is not the place for you however. However for a comic shop in Lumberjack Country the selection is great. read more

I can't give five stars after one visit, but after a short time shopping and talking to Barry, I realize this guy knows his stuff. When I travel, I take the opportunity to look for comic and game stores, because you never know what cool stuff you might find. Found some great 'treasures' for my role playing club and Barry clued me into more resources after he took an interest in what I was searching for. I don't know when I will find myself back up in Barry's neck of the redwoods, but when I do, I'll be sure to pop in because you never know ..... read more
