Arcata is a college town, and every college town deserves at least one quality record store. People's Records is that place. With one of the more outstanding selections of QUALITY vinyl I've seen, this centrally located shop puts many of the smaller ones in my hometown of Sacramento to shame. I think one of the biggest positives they have going is their focus on vinyl. So many record stores have neglected their vinyl selection in a desperate attempt to cater to the digital crowd and are now trying to make up for it. Here, it looks and feels like a record store from many decades ago. The selection in any genre, from classic rock to country to rap to reggae, is fantastic. The product is well taken care of. The prices are high, but vinyl prices are al high these days. overall, it's a place that caters to those who are collectors and music lovers. I spoke briefly with the owner who was more than happy to chat with me about music. To be in a strange town relating to a friendly stranger about the Talking Heads speaks a lot to the universality of music.

First went here in 1981. Love this store, glad it's still alive. Every time I go up to Humboldt, I pop in.

Prices overall seem pretty fair. Overall, this is a pretty cool little spot in Arcata. Had a chance to pick up some rare vinyl here!

Solid place. Nice selection. A dying breed. Opened the year I was born so I feel connected... and old. Or getting there anyways.

This place is well worth supporting, and even has a great selection of local rock groups and artists, which is the main reason I go there.

Really nice local record store. Super friendly staff. And I love the fact I can trade in my old records for store credit or even cash.

A Timeless Detour into Treasure and Nostalgia-…read more I hadn't planned on stopping. I had a list, a schedule, a mental map of where I needed to be and when. But sometimes, life has a way of nudging you toward the unexpected, and that's how I found myself standing outside an old-town antique shop, its window display cluttered with relics from a hundred different stories. The bell jingled as I pushed the door open, and instantly, the air shifted. It smelled like history--aged paper, polished wood, and a whisper of something familiar, something comforting. Shelves bowed under the weight of forgotten treasures: old vinyl records, glass bottles that had once held someone's favorite drink, and pocket watches long overdue for winding. I wandered. No rush, no pressure. Just the quiet joy of discovery. And then--there it was. A ridiculous, fantastic, utterly perfect cheetah (or maybe leopard?) print watch. It caught my eye like an old friend waving from across the street. Something about it--bold, nostalgic, and completely unnecessary--made it impossible to ignore. Two bucks. A steal. Done. And just when I thought my little side quest couldn't get any better, I spotted it. An unopened, untouched Roy Rogers radio record player, still waiting for someone to press play for the very first time. It was a piece of history, a portal to a simpler time, and I knew I couldn't leave without it. It was one of those moments that sneaks up on you--a completely unplanned detour that somehow becomes a core memory. The kind of experience that makes you want to come back, not just for the things, but for the feeling. Next time, I'm bringing my family. They need to see this place, to feel the wonder of it, to lose themselves in the charm of forgotten treasures and stories waiting to be rediscovered. So, here's my encouragement to you: let yourself wander. Interrupt your schedule. Step inside that odd little shop you always pass by. You might just find a ridiculous watch, a piece of history, or even a part of yourself you didn't know was waiting to be found. -A Content and Charmed Man

Update: Arrived…read moretoday and was ignored by the single employee who had her back turned to stock. Three of us waiting in line and when I asked her if someone was available to help us check or she scowled and huffed over. I also really really do not enjoy getting three different promotions shoved in my face (I don't blame her personally I blame FYE for making her do this) while trying to check out. Who even gets magazine subscriptions anymore? The headphones I bought (my fourth pair that are cheap AF but I love the color, that keep breaking) wouldn't even expand/open from their folded state. Immediately returned to the store to find 0 employees for FIVE minutes while I waited at the front register waving my arms at the cameras. I eventually just went and got the same headset and opened at that box, tempted to just walk out with it. She finally came out from somewhere in the back, told her the issue and left. She had to forcibly shove/pull the headphones I had bought with very loud audible clicks into place and then she couldn't even get them to collapse again. Cheap product as usual, and I told her I wasn't taking the risk with that pair and got the other which opened on the first try. It's a good thing I'm not a thief--this is Humboldt, folks, you can't have ONE employee working who leaves the floor for several minutes at a time and doesn't monitor your stock. Multiple employees have been awesome over the two years I've been here. Today specifically and especially Joseph got me hooked up with a device so I can stream DoTA2 TI9 on my tvand I won't miss a game!! He took more time than he needed to and went above and beyond to help me out. Thanks man.
