It's across from The Pinc Lady Mansion (they don't spell pink with a k for some reason) across the street, another Victorian Queen Ann which is a hotel. You can easily access it if you are passing through Eureka, it's downtown and easy to park. I think this is a must if you are into Victorian architecture.

The home was finished in 1889, and was built for lumber baron William Carson. He and his family lived in the home for many years. It was in danger of demolition, as maintaining such large historic homes became costly. A group of local businessmen bought the home in 1950, and turned it into a private club. They have since spent millions and millions of dollars to restore and maintain the home. While it is absolutely beautiful from the outside, unfortunately, it is not open for tours. However, if you happen to know a member of the club, or if you are invited to an event such as a wedding, office party, etc. at the mansion, you can get a tour. It's a very nice home on the inside, and the highlight is the cupola at the very top, which Mr. Carson used to observe his business interests. Captain Buhne was a very wealthy man credited to be the first captain to pilot settlers across the Humboldt Bay. He was also was a business merchant/dairyman/tugboat captain/ railroad & timber investor and Vice President of local bank. Captain Buhne hired the architect firm of "Kenitzer & Raun" to design his building. The architectural design style was called "Italianate Renaissance Revival" which was a popular style at this time "Victorian Era". During the late 1800's the building was home to a number of business, some being (Humboldt County Bank/US. Land Offices.) Today the first floor is occupied with boutiques and restaurant. The second and third floor remain offices and apartments. The craftsmanship of the interior as well as the exterior are stunning ! I love all the detailed workmanship of this period ! Headwaters Forest Reserve is an amazing place and full of natural beauty! The Reserve is managed by…read morethe Bureau of Land Management in consultation with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The trails are well maintained and there is a decent size parking lot. This Reserve protects 7,472 acres of old growth redwood groves, other forest stands, streams, and wildlife. This is an amazing place to go hiking at there is a Headwaters Education Center if you want to learn more about this area. There are different hikes you can take varying in length. Some of the trails are paved and some are unpaved. Dogs and bikes are allowed on some of the trails and not on others. The Elk River Trail is the longest trail and it is 11 miles roundtrip. This area is so peaceful and tranquil and loved that this area has been preserved so that everyone can enjoy it!

Careful when coming in because a car might be backing up or confused it is a one way! I highly appreciate that on the trail they consistently have signs to show you if you are allowed off trailing or not. It is helpful to see a map in case you are unsure how far you want to go in. Take into consideration the amount of miles going in and out. Usually my partner and I go up to the 2nd mile maker which is the bridge overlooking the river. And building up your tolerance from there.

City of Eureka as a visitor [Eureka CA]…read more We saw and did a lot more in the City of Eureka this time around when we revisited during the extended Memorial Day weekend 2025. Each below have their own a separate review. New to us: * Sequoia Park & Garden - the garden featured a wishing well and a gazebo. Lots of flowers in bloom which is generally between May and September. * Sequoia Park Zoo and The Redwood Sky Walk - The Sky Walk is accessible only through the Sequoia Park Zoo. Enjoyed both attractions! The suspension bridge was my highlight but I also really liked seeing the flamingos! * Fort Humboldt State Historic Park - cool history where future U.S. President, Ulysses S. Grant, served as a Captain and commander of all Union forces during the Civil War. This place is said to be haunted. * T.J. Maxx - just passing time before movies. As we were about to leave town to head back home we stopped by downtown on Memorial Day. Many businesses were open including: * Old Town Square - historic charm and for the most part I didn't see too many homeless people on the streets as many have mentioned in their reviews. We came around 10:00a. * Dick Taylor Craft Chocolate - located right on the waterfront of Humboldt Bay. Sampled some artisanal chocolates and enjoyed a Browned Butter Rice Krispy Treat from their cafe bar. * Los Bagels - tried their Scrambagel for the first time. Very good in organic sesame seed bagel. This is a cafe with Mexican and Jewish influence. Problematic situations aren't your problem if you don't apply yourself to them ,housing is reasonable for California It does not have some of the general issues as often is other spots in the area such as power outages or poor connectivity It's kind of small but there is always a lot going on if you're into roaming and budgeting, actually fairly quiet at night There are a few negatives, quite a bit of homelessness and addicts but that's everywhere now. I've been homeless so it doesn't bother me aside empathy Thank you eureka police for being respectful and empathetic to people and not robbing shooting and beating people on a regular basis people here complain about the police far too much. I blame that on addicts and hippies and some old anti police attitude mess. I used to sell drugs in other states. My instructor was very well versed and accredited to teach the course. He was also extremely patient with us newbies and took into account that we each had different body types and physical abilities. I especially appreciated the philosophy of the importance of safety at every moment. There were certainly little nuances I would not have thought of on my own. Best of all, it was REALLY FUN! I got to shoot 21 different firearms and it facilitated my understanding of what works for me and what I'd like to explore more. I recommend this course for anyone who is new to the sport or even the old dogs with rusty skills. I'm now an old dog with new skills and appreciation.
