In fact, this was their 45th year celebrating Groundhog Day. The gates opened a little prior to 6am and there was plenty of parking. The restrooms were right next to the parking lot and not only were they clean...they were HEATED, which was so wonderful since it was about 25 degrees outside. It was a short walk to the festivities, less than a half mile, but it was through the woods (VERY CLEARLY marked!) and over some wooden boardwalks (not sure how handicap accessible this is but it was an easy walk for this out of shape girl.) Everything was well maintained and looked beautiful even in the dark. We were able to see a bald eagle and another hawk close to the groundhog enclosure. If it would have been a bit warmer (the pond was frozen over!) I would have loved to stay and see more of the animals. Especially the otters. This girl LOVES otters. There was quite a bit of merchandise available: stuffed groundhogs, bracelets, a variety of buttons, several different tee shirts, and magnets. We bought a few items and entered the raffle to win a gift bag that included the original copy of last years proclamation. It was a really cold wait for the 7:31 proclamation time, although the park did pass out hand warmers. I think we could have waited a bit longer but since this was our first time, we had no idea how big of a crowd to expect. I would guess that there were 100-150 people. Being so early, we were right up front but I think we would have been about to see if we had gotten there a bit later. All of the employees (volunteers?) were very nice and helpful. We met many people who do this annually and there were even news crews here. It was very fun and definitely worth attending. We will definitely be returning but only when it is absolutely warmer! Ps. If you want to catch a decent string of good-sized bass or crappie, a boat is a must. Otherwise, you can just chill on a lake bank and wait for catfish to grab your chicken liver offering, or try your hand at catching bream. Non-county residents are required to pay a $5 parking fee. They DO CHECK, so don't try to cheat, and end up paying a large fine. I have met many nice fisherfolks here. The most charming are a pair of Vietnamese women, who are there at least once a week, swaddled in sun-proof clothing and wearing wide brimmed straw hats. They are plenty savvy at catching fish. They use hotdogs for catfish and meal worms for bream. Each of them can cast a bait 100 feet or better. I've never seen them leave without a full cooler of fish. Me, on the other hand...............

Came across a couple of horseback riding places. That's been on my bucket list but leaped up a few spots after seeing the movie, Nope, lol. The other horse back riding spot was closer to my mama's home and cheaper but South Side Riders is Black-owned and operated so, no contest! I scheduled a ride for me and mama. The day we were scheduled to ride, it rained. We'd gotten a call from SSR to let us know that our ride would be rescheduled because of the inclement weather. Do you know what the lady said? She said, it's raining, it makes the trail slippery, "and the horses don't like it." That's bringing me to tears now as it did then! That told me so much about these beautiful people running this place. They put the horses first!!!!! They put the horses concerns first!!! I fell in LOVE with South Side Riders when she said that! A couple of days later, we'd arrived at SSR for our trail ride. We were greeted by the beautiful couple who runs the place. The vibe was cool, friendly and they put my mom and I, who have no experience riding horses, very much at ease. I saw the horses and got giddy. They're all so beautiful, calm and sweet and you can tell they're well taken care of. The two horses that my mother and I rode seemed to have a bond. It was precious watching them interact. This was my first time on a horse. They provided a step ladder to help me get up. I appreciated that. Before hitting the actual trail, they let us go around in the enclosed area where we mounted the horses. They gave us driving instructions... That's what it felt like, a driving lesson, lol. How to steer right, left, stop, go.... All very necessary and appreciated. They made sure moms and I were comfortable before we got started. The trail ride itself was so lovely. I was nervous but that didn't last long. Before I knew it, I was relaxed and wishing I was rich so I could stay and ride all day. I talk to animals like they're human, so at one point, I'm thanking the horse for taking it easy with me as it's my first time riding. And he neighs. Like, he understood every word I'd said, and he responded. A similar interaction was probably the inspiration for the TV show, Mr. Ed. So now we're having a full-on conversation and...just thinking about it is making my heart smile. Again. When the ride was over, I skipped my giddy, animal loving self over to the petting zoo while moms waited in the car. I didn't wanna leave! The babies are so cute and sweet. The donkeys...what's their I.Q.? I'm asking because they seem quite intelligent. Whenever I visit moms, I will definitely stop by South Side for a trail ride!

He had movie clips & still pictures highlighting all the scenes & explaining how the City & the businesses benefit! We safely maneuvered traffic and went from Downtown to Midtown to Buckhead! I was really impressed by their prompt responses and great communication whenever I had a question whether via email or phone call. We live a few hours away and weren't sure what to expect when we got here, but we were so pleasantly surprised by how much fun we had on the tour and our tour guide was THE BEST and so much fun to talk to (s/o to Melinda!). It was a great experience and on top of getting to visit film locations we felt like we learned and were able to appreciate this city so much more
