Otto's was such a wonderful experience! Almost seems like a supper club with a Mediterranean twist! We were searching for a change from the typical downtown scene, and this was exactly what we were looking for. The restaurant is very unassuming but we are so happy we visited! We started with the Mediterranean platter and I will absolutely order this again because the whipped feta was amazing. Most entrees come with a salad or soup so we had the Cesar salad with ours. Dishes were perfect. Proteins were perfectly cooked and the lamb seemed very high quality. I also thought the portions were great for the price. The friendly vibe and incredible staff really put the finishing touches on an awesome night. We decided to sit on the patio and it was such a wonder summer night. What an excellent spot! Researched where to go for parents weekend visiting the university of Wisconsin and made reservations here. So happy we did! Not far from campus at all. Really great menu. We loved the calamari which was different than what we usually have. Two people had the lamb chops and they absolutely loved it. Our server, Tara, was amazing. She was so helpful, so energetic, excellent energy and we could not have been happier. We look forward to coming again, and we recommend to others. read more

Enjoyed a great meal at this throw back of a true Supper Club located on the west side of Madison. Not too many of these wonderful dining establishments left in this metro area. So glad I found this one! Our evening started with some great drinks, Dirty Martini's for me and hand muddled Old Fashions for my wife. Bartender was friendly and fun to watch as he mixed up the drinks. Once we had our second drinks in hand, we preceded to the dinning area by walking up a set of stairs. On the second level we checked in and were led by out waitress even higher up the stairs to a third level to be seated. I would say that each level (including the bar area) had about 5 or 6 tables. Looks like they have outdoor dining also available in the warmer months. It was pretty busy for a week night, but we had made reservations through Open Table and had no problems, or wait to being seated. Our waitress was awesome, and the poor thing had to have climbed up and down those stairs a hundred times that evening. Many times carrying food or drinks! Somehow, even with that type of workout, she remained so friendly, fun and upbeat. Made out experience even better. Our meal started with Mussels as our appetizer. They were buttery, thick and very flavorful. Loved them! (But I have to admit after the two Martini's most everything would have been great!). My wife ordered the Scallops as her entree and I had the Special which was some type of Pork Chop. I'm pretty torn over Otto's -- I want to like it more. It's in a neat setting tucked away in an old farmhouse with an intimate ambience. I've only ever walked through the bar, but the bar on the bottom floor feels like you're hanging in someone's kitchen, while the rest feels like you're at a table in someone's dining room. Otto's likewise has some special memories for me as I used to come here with my grandmother and remember the food being quite good. I hadn't been here in awhile, and came with a friend on a Wednesday night. The dining room was busy, and I was very grateful we were on the middle level floor instead of upstairs where the music seemed SO LOUD (to be fair, I very much dislike any time there is live music because it is always so loud and I hate having to yell to someone next to me when I go out). Our server was kind, great at answering questions, and accommodating to my friend's diet restrictions. However, I mentioned at the beginning of dinner that I was going to get a port for my dessert, but after the meal we waited so long I was tired and just wanted to get the check instead. Dinner was good, not great. If it weren't such an expensive restaurant, it might have warranted four stars. But for the upscale pricing, I did expect a bit more. We started with the Moroccan crab bakes because I saw their photo on the website and they looked delicious. The flavorings also sounded wonderful. They were indeed tasty, but also much smaller than the website photo made them appear. The sauces that came with them were likewise tasty. Perhaps I'm used to crab having just returned from a year in Maryland, but there was hardly any crab taste to said crab cakes... again, wonderful flavors, but I would not have guessed there was crab in them save the name of the dish. For my entrée, I ordered the scallops, which had a great flavor to them which doesn't overpower the scallops themselves. However, each scallop was cooked a bit too much and all of them were a bit tough. Again, not terrible, but for the price I'd expect better. The risotto it came with was delicious with a nice blend of risotto, veggies, and goat cheese (goat cheese is a favorite of mine). While the flavoring of both individually was fantastic, the flavor of the risotto and the flavor of the scallops didn't really go together. I ate them separately anyway so not a huge deal, but it struck me as an odd combination. read more

We came here with a local couple for dinner, and it was excellent! We arrived at our reservation time and hiked up to the top level to dine. They had earned our friend who made the reservation that there were a lot of steps, which didn't bother us, but is fair warning for those who may have an issue with it. We fit in our drink orders, which arrived in due time, and we placed our food orders. One of our friends got the fillet and a huge mound of mashed potatoes. The steak looked amazing and he ate it all and enjoyed it a lot. Our other friend got the Seafood Trio and said it was great. My wife got the Greek Salad with Shrimp. It was a good mix of fresh veggies, but only had about 3 shrimp. Nonetheless, she enjoyed it. I had the Mediterranean Grill, a wonderful combination of Greek favorites. It was delicious and everything was fresh tasting and flavorful. Fabulous lamb chops. Service was very good and nicely paced. I was really looking forward to eating here with all the good reviews, only to be disappointed. I don't know how this place has so many good reviews and was so busy on a Tuesday night. The food looks great but doesn't taste great. More like a Mediterranean fast food place instead of an up scale dining experience. My mother in laws meal had to be sent back and taken off the check it was so salty and we were on our way to a play so she didn't get to eat. The calamari was tasteless. My Mediterranean grill which samples different items was just basic. My husbands duck was bland too. Yes it's an old farm house but also super dated restaurant that needs some new life. We came to Otto's to celebrate one of our friends' birthday. The restaurant is tucked away off of Mineral Point but worth the visit. The building itself is very cool, 3 floors of dining including the bar in the basement. For appetizers, we got the calamari, Kofte, and grilled shrimp. The grilled shrimp was definitely the favorite, but all apps were good. To drink, I got the margarita and it was big and delicious. I got another one partway through the meal. For the meal, I got the ricotta stuffed chicken and it was so good! I would go back to have it again. My fiancé had the duck and he loved that as well! My wife and I and two other couples enjoyed dinner at Otto's on Friday, October 13, 2023. The service was wonderful. I had the Caesar Salad (with anchovies!) and the Mediterranean Grill. I also had a VERY nourishing martini. It was superb! It would have been enough to share. My wife enjoyed the Chilean Sea Bass, but thought it was a little soft and not as flavorful as she has enjoyed at other locations. It would not be confused with inexpensive, but the quality matched the price fairly reasonably. The restaurant is located in what seems to be a house, and it has a very comfortable/homey ambiance. I would strongly recommend going to Otto's but be prepared to pay a premium price for excellent food and drink. Be sure to make a reservation. read more

The ambiance is so cozy and classy. The duck had a really nice balance of sweet and savory. The köfte with the mint sauce and texture of the couscous was also delicious. The crab cakes were a little too much. While I love curry, it was very overpowering in comparison to the small pieces of crab. The best meal you will have in Madison. Perhaps the mid-west. Do I need to say more? Probably. Yelp expects better (or at least longer) reviews than that, even though it is all you need to know. Friday night, made a reservation on Open Table. Got there late, but they still accommodated us. Started with a glass of Oregon Pinot. The wine selection is short, but excellent. You can order affordable, or move into the big leagues. It is not a Wine Spectator award of excellence quality, but again, very fine, especially for Madison. I had had the chef's tasting menu, my better half, the duck. The tasting menu is an insane deal. Three courses, with or without wine. With wine, $53. Without, $33. I had the wine. Starting out, the oysters (west coast) were better than I have had on the east or west coast. So good we ordered half a dozen more. I mean, I have had oysters that literally were in the sea an hour before, and these were better. Don't ask me how, the answer is must simply be magic. My wife, the butternut soup, which was also great, and I am not a soup fan. The wine, an Australian Sauvignon banc/Semillon blend, perfect. 2nd course - a veal chop with mashed potatoes and a mushroom cognac sauce. So simple, so well prepared, so good. And the wine, a Spanish Tempranillo, a perfect match. My wife, a duck connoisseur, loved hers. Desert was the strawberry rhubarb pudding and a brut rose from France. Again, a perfect combination. Place has gone down hill. Made reservations Month in advance which they didn't have. Arrived five minutes early and was greeted by some little snot nose at the bar who was a poster girl for rudness. "Sir were not open yet" Not hello, Have a seat, be right with you just treated us as intruders. She disappeared for about ten minutes Returned with an attitude. We requested to speak with a manager that turned out to be a bigger joke than the person that probably was her little sister. She got so flustered and said we could wait for Carl the main Manager but we decided on taking a walk out the door was more appropriate. It's truly ashamed that this once lively place which was so much fun turn into a Wake. Stay away. The further the better. read more

Last Saturday was our fist visit to Otto's as out of state visitors. The guys at the bar, Adam & Brian were great. After being closed for more than 10 weeks Otto's has now reopened with limited social distancing seating and safety precautions. Being one of my favorite restaurants, I made sure that we had reservations on opening night. I was glad to see a fair number of cars in the lot as we arrived for our 7 pm reservations. The main floor dining room was reduced to 4 tables -- one of which was our favorite. The happy dance just keeps on going. Add to the mix one of our favorite waiters, Jamie, was our server. Did I mention we dine here a lot? And for almost twenty-five years? Jamie started us out with our favorite martinis and a basket of hot sour dough buns with butter. Yum! Knowing our habits he let us enjoy our drinks before taking our order. We prefer leisurely dining. My husband ordered the mixed grill and tomato bisque. We share so I can give a fair assessment of his dinner. Stellar comes to mind. The Mediterranean grill is a large platter filled with lamb chops, chicken, koftke, couscous salad, wheat pilaf, red onion relish, yogurt mint sauce and pomegranate reduction. My go to dish is the seared scallops. This is what I ordered along with a Caesar salad. The scallops were seared perfectly, charred on one side and slightly translucent. Unfortunately they changed the risotto recipe that is served with the scallops. I missed the ingredient change on the menu, being a creature of habit and not reading the menu. (To my credit, Otto's really hasn't changed the menu in the 25 years I've been going there, so a change wasn't expected). Not a good move. Why change a good thing? One bite and I left it on my plate. Unless they go back to the extremely good, not soupy filled with zucchini recipe, I will not be ordering scallops again. This caused a one star rating drop. Back to better things! Dessert, Bread pudding, specifically warm white chocolate cherry bread pudding with vanilla ice cream. Need I say more? I highly recommend giving Otto's a try. The staff is friendly, the food very good and it's a safe place to dine. Let's keep them in business.! read more

I live near Otto's and it's wonderful for a romantic dinner. The bar is great on a cold night, which happens in Madison with frequency, while there's outdoor seating in the summer. Service is very attentive, with servers who seem to have a history with the establishment and who are knowledgeable. I've had a variety of entrees, sometimes eating a salad as an entree, but also enjoying the specials with fish options. Otto's really is the best of Wisconsin supper clubs. read more

We used to go here more frequently decades ago. The menu looked promising so we decided to go for lunch. We made reservations and got there right when they opened. One server for the entire place. We had a lovely table outside and were eager to try what we had seen online. I ordered the Moroccan crab cakes. And aside from a Moroccan spice mix, I couldn't taste or see any crab meat. For the price, not worth it. My partner had the Scallop salad. $27 for 2 scallops, a large handful of greens, asparagus so large and fibrous much as to be spit out, a few pieces of bacon and egg. Again totally not worth the price. Our server was doing her best with all the people coming in but had a hard time hiding her frustration. Had dinner here last night with my family and we were very disappointed. When we sat down the waitress informed us they were out of mashed potatoes somehow. This is a problem as 1/3 of their menu items are served with mashed potatoes. They allowed for substitutes. My Caesar salad had 3 inch piece of plastic in it which I couldn't see until I was chewing on it. The duck my wife ordered was came out to well done. My son liked the lamb chops. We all agreed the food was very bland and my wife's risotto tasted like what could only be described a diesel fuel. It was very odd. The waitress was very nice and apologetic and comp'd the duck and provided a free glass of wine for the plastic in my salad, which was very nice. At these price points though, the food should have flavor and it should be executed with much more precision. Save yourself $50 a plate and eat anywhere else. read more

Otto's is this cute little tucked away restaurant off Mineral Point road. You've probably driven by it multiple times, but never thought of stopping. Well, you should. Wait for a nice day, Friday/Saturday when they have live music and make your reservation. Their porch is huge, covered, and drinks flow plenty. Their dishes can be a little pricey, but you'll have some to take home and if you go with friends, the drinks are great. read more

I really appreciated their bathrooms (single, locking, feel like you're a guest at someone's house) and the small dining room sizes that make it so there are only about 4-8 parties in any given room. I had the fried calamari ($11) and the Maple Leaf Farms Duck ($29, not pictured). Both were amazing. I was a huge fan of the caper aioli that came with the calamari and of the way they cooked the duck to get the skin golden-brown, a bit crisp, and glazed with melted duckfat. The price was a bit of a downside, but still was more pleased than average. Would confidently rate Otto's above average. read more

After several years of hyping the New Zealand mussels at Otto's, I returned and was sorely disappointed. Mussels were not great, the ambiance was stuffy, and it was expensive. This feels like the kind of place your well-off Midwestern grandparents would recommend and rave the whole time about how there was a bread basket. But the bar was busy, so maybe that means it's more of a destination for a drink on the Westside? Nevertheless, if you do decide to stay for dinner, I could recommend the New Zealand lamb and would note that the service was great. What an absolute ridiculous overrated restaurant. I am beyond disappointed by what they promised and what they deliver. I had ordered the seafood trio, and I wish on my life I would have taken a picture of this abomination of a fake promise. This so-called "entrée" consisted of a single un-seared bland white rubbery scallop. As an added bonus I also received ,on this plate, a piece of pale salmon, which was not only over cooked but was smaller than the size of my palm. Oh wait now. There was also TWO medium size shrimp ( tail on) ,which did have flavor, but we're also overcooked and TWO! Wow. So generous!! * insert sarcasm here * That was the end of the seafood portion of this meal. The rest of the plate consisted of half sliced mushy tiny red potatoes, green asparagus cut into 1 inch pieces mixed in with super bland halved artichoke. There was supposed to be roasted fennel which there was NONE. Everything was just a mushy gross display of bland. Every bite tasted the same. Like they sucked the life out of each item. The meal was supposed to be buried in this basil pesto oil which I asked them to put on the side. Good thing for me I did. This pesto had absolutely no flavor and was so greasy and extremely unpleasant. Dead in flavor. The Caesar salad barely had any crunch, it did boast a lot of Parmesan , which I like because it was shaved, but the dressing was horrendous and dead. I wasn't looking for a heavy creamy dressing , only something that wasn't just a hint of grease and sodium. .Flaccid and underwhelming. The rolls they served on the table looked so promising. They were those unpretentious little baby rolls that had such a beautiful color but as soon as you try to either break or bite into them you couldn't. You may possibly break a knife or even a tooth by how hard the "shell" of that roll was. I can't even call it a crusty exterior because it was THAT hard. Definitely not a crusty roll with a light fluffy interior. These things had absolutely none of the appeal of fresh bread. The desserts were ok. My neighbor bakes better. Nothing special. I wouldn't go back for any reason. I advise to go elsewhere based on quality versus pricing. Ewww. Never again. read more

The best way I can describe this place is like a Saturday Night Live skit. Every single time our waitress came she gave us weird or bad news. We placed our orders for bread, appetizers, and entrees. Very long wait for bread and drinks. Our waitress almost never came by and when she did she was very frazzled. She then told us our food was almost out and we asked about the appetizer. She blamed us and said we should've reminded her so we never got it. We shouldn't have to do that and she was never even at our tShe did comp us with desserts however ahead of time I told her I was allergic to strawberries, then brought over the cheesecake and told me not to eat it because of the strawberry sauce. I'm not sure why she wouldn't have asked for it on the side. Overall, the weirdest worst service with very average food. Don't recommend- so many other great spots in Madison. read more

We've been here a number of times and honestly I'm surprised I don't already have a FIVE STAR review of this place. We came for a date night about a year ago and had the best first impression! This is my favorite restaurant in Madison and if there were a reason to miss moving out of the cold next year to Phoenix, this restaurant would be at the top of that list. Really. We love the idea that the menu changes as often as it does. We love that there is a pairing menu that is carefully prepared and it feels personal and hand crafted. We love the feel of the restaurant - it's not too formal and not too laid back; it reminds me of a supper club that met a bed and breakfast that met fine dining. It's almost like a speakeasy, where not a whole lot of people know about it but enough certainly do. I bring up the name at work and amongst friends and commonly the response is "I've never heard of the place" or "it's been on my list of places to check out." Well use this review and make the reservation. We love the menu and that the restaurant is Mediterranean-inspired, it doesn't seem as though Madison has many options out there for that. Reliably good chill suburban "fine dining" that's not cheap but still not like what you'd be stuck paying in a big city. To me, Otto's is very much what makes sense for the west side if you don't feel like going downtown but still want something nice, and want an option besides steak, steak, steak, or a bunch of small plates at Eno Vino. We were looking for somewhere to have a nice outdoor Friday night dinner on a particularly gorgeous evening, but chill and on the west side. Otto's delivered. Not the first time I've been here, but first time in a while. The patio is nice and there are enough trees to distract you from the nearby banks, office buildings, etc. I might go so far as to say that this is the best of the limited patio options on the west side. You can get a pretty decent deal by going for the chef's tasting menu at 30 bucks per person with app, entree & dessert. We *almost* did that but the two entrees were fish and lamb chops. Both of them sounded appealing to me but my wife has this thing about not eating lamb, veal and other baby animals. I can get away with like, gyros or ground lamb kebabs in front of her but she kinda hates it if I order lamb chops. And I love lamb chops! Oh well. So we went for the regular menu instead. She got the sea bass and I got the duck. Both entrees were solid. We got the mushroom caps as a starter and shockingly we ordered two desserts, the bread pudding and some chocolate gelato. If I were to critique anything, the mushroom caps portion could be a little larger, and the sides on the entrees could be a little more creative. But everything was tasty and very well cooked. My duck included both duck confit and duck breast. The breast could've been a touch closer to medium, but it definitely was not overcooked. Still tasted excellent. With a couple drinks, and the admittedly not-very-big salads which come with the entrees, it was about $125 after tip. That's obviously not cheap and I'm not spending $100+ on dinner every weekend, but we both very much enjoyed our food, and the patio, and our server was excellent. She even brought me extra ice for my manhattan on the rocks that I was drinking perhaps too slowly, without me asking. And like I said, you can easily spend less than we did by doing the chef's tasting menu. So I got to thinking, and really I've always been happy with my meals at Otto's, so maybe I'll pay a little more attention to it. It's a good spot. This was my first time attempting to dine at Ottos. My friends and I got a table in the bar and ordered a bottle of wine. As the server was opening the bottle, the manager came over and told my friend that she needed to leave and he did not want her in the bar and that we could stay but she had to leave. My friend was an old employee who quit due to a hostile work environment a few years ago, however she does not cause trouble or do anything that would make us think she wasn't welcome. Extremely rude, first and last time I will ever come here! I have never had such a shocking experience, especially at a restaurant that is held to such high standards. Do not recommend. read more

An amazing experience all around. I found this place on a Yelp search and I am so glad I did. The restaurant is in a restored farmhouse and you might drive by it if you didn't know where to look. We did not have a reservation but they seated us on the deck on a beautiful late summer evening. We started with the crabcakes a unique version I had never had before. Lots of Indian and Mediterranean flavors with crunchy chick peas. The soup was a tomato bisque that was quite good but could have been better with basil. The duck. OMG was fantastic. I have worked in restaurants I have cooked duck in restaurants and this duck was some of the best I have ever had. The breast was cooked just under medium and the leg and thigh had delicious crispy skin. The potatoes were amazing and the green beans were fresh and we'll seasoned. Wow. Me; a Bartender with a Friday night off to spend with my family? During Restaurant Week? Uncanny! Not interested in who's participating in RW, I just want a nice place to go. Enter the OpenTable app on my BB on Wednesday night. Result: Otto's. 8:30PM on Friday evening. Reservation confirmed. ...Fast forward to Friday evening; we arrive on a frigid January night to Otto's; on Mineral Point Rd yet tucked away like a precious pearl. I tell the hostess reservation for 3 under the last name C_____ and she seats us right away. An old establishment with hella charm and warmth. Our waitress arrives with a genuine smile and an equally appealing nature. Her name is Linda L. Linda converses with us a bit before taking our drink orders. We have a bit in common and talk about more than a few things throughout the course of our courses. My party was there eating and talking for about 2-hours with not a lot of traffic on our floor. Although we'll be back soon, I'd love to come here when Jack Frost is outta town; say like June... The restaurant is three levels with a bar area on the first when you walk in. The Mediterranean platter appetizer is very tasty and large. The whipped feta on the platter was amazing. Tomato bisque soup was also good and a decent portion size (all dinner entrees come with soup or a salad). Sea bass and lamb chops were both good and good sized portions. I just want you to know that we just just came back from a visit to your restaurant and have never received such Condescending and Horrible Treatment...I am Stunned and Mortified...We go out to dinner usually 2 times a week or more and we spend A lot of Money dining out...But this last Experience has left me Speechless...The wait staff in particular, Karlee, who is accordingly a "regular" was EXTREMELY Rude and Condescending when we inquired about happy hour pricing...She also had the nerve to laugh in our face when we asked for clarification...This person as a wait staff is Absolutely the worst example of a waitress that I have a met...FYI our daughter is currently a waitress and in general we tip Very Well, over 20% for sure!!...When I asked to speak to her manager concerning our treatment she directed me to Karl Granberg who completely backed our waitress and kick me out (OMG!!) and said We are NEVER Welcome Back there again....As I said before I am Totally Speechless and Incredulous....Needless to say I Will NEVER Be back there Again...How Dare they treat Paying Customers that Way!!!!! Another classic example of an overrated and overpriced restaurant. I've been to Otto's twice -- once for a rehearsal dinner and once for a birthday. For the rehearsal dinner, it was a preset menu and although it was technically free, it was just meh. The appetizers were okay, but the entree selections were not enticing at all. At the birthday dinner, I ordered the ribeye steak. It was on the more bland end and the steak was tougher rather than tender. Again, the appetizers were slightly better -- the calamari was standard and the Mediterranean meatballs were okay. All in all, Otto's food was not absolutely horrible. My diagnosis of overrated and overpriced just means that for the price you pay, there is no doubt you can find better quality and better tasting dishes. read more
