I've had Other Half a few times since I live in Minnesota and liked them. The tap room was and an adventure to find from where the bus dropped me off, and the entrance is really tucked away. The space is nice, the staff were friendly enough. The beer was just okay. I had two on tap plus a cocktail. The two hazy IPAs I had on tap tasted under carbonated and were just sorta meh. Even the anniversary one. Cocktail was the best of the three. I'd go back to try again. read more

Other Half is one of my favorite breweries and we usually stop in when we're in NYC so we definitely had to visit here when we were in town for a conference. This location is a bit out of the way and not near downtown, but we were able to Uber there without any issue. It's very spacious and has a ton of seating both inside and outside. The beer selection is fantastic and we had a few delicious flights. To-go options are plentiful and we made sure to buy a bunch to bring home. A good experience at Other Half Brewing in Ivy City. Ivy City has evolved over the years and it seems Other Half Brewing has contributed to the positive commercial and community development in this neighborhood. I had not ventured this far into Okie St. since the old LOVE nightclub of the early 2000s, so it's nice to see how this and other restaurants have increased the community value. Other Half Brewing has space indoors, under a large covered patio, and rooftop. The covered patio is equipped with multiple televisions. The outdoor patio has ample space to gather with friends. The venue has a rustic feel, highlighted by large wooden picnic tables and metal stools (both low and high tables and stools available). I visited on a day when the patio was reserved for a private gathering later in the afternoon, so I was able to take advantage of the patio for a couple hours prior. The venue is kid and dog friendly, however, both must be well-behaved; and dogs must be leashed. The customer service was very friendly. There are plenty of IPAs to choose from and sample prior to purchase. They also offer cocktails. There is snack food available for purchase. You can bring your own food, however, no outside alcoholic beverages are allowed on the premises. They have menus available to order from Ivy City Smokehouse which is on the same block as Other Half Brewing. To order food, you scan the QR code on the menu, order, and the food will be delivered to you for a $3 fee. Garage and street parking is available. Overall, a good experience and I will visit again. read more

While their location in new York is one of my favorite breweries in the world, this one is also getting up there. Hazy ipas (especially jucy ones) are our favorites and that is exactly what they specialize in. They have about 30 beers and most of them are ipas and hazys. While the space has a decent amount of indoor seating, it is absolutely made for outdoor seating. The open air area was perfect in the nice weather (but also looked like it had heaters for bad weather too). The staff was super friendly and gave us plenty of tasters with their great recommendations. We ended up getting a flight because of the array of good options too. Overall a great spot! read more

Finding the place: Street parking or parking garage down the road. Their website helped us figure out parking before arriving. No visible signage from the road or sidewalk to indicate where the brewery is located in the building. We walked along the building on two streets before we walked back between two buildings and noticed the obscure OH sign on the back wall of the courtyard. It is on the backside of the building. Trust but verify: They don't seem to keep up with what they promote on their website. We went at a specific day/time because we were expecting to enjoy some beers and a burger pop-up. We arrived and asked where the food would be and they indicated they weren't sure if it was there yet but that it would be down the ramp to the side of the building. There was a food truck there but not the one advertised and we had our tastebuds set on the advertised food. I know things can happen and they likely found the next available option, but at least update on your SM if you aren't going to update the website; we would have prepared accordingly. This led to a very short visit, as we were all hungry and wanting a burger and not the food truck food. The beer was excellent. If you are in the area, go and grab some to-go. I wouldn't make a special trip if you aren't already in the area. Our trip was frustrating but thankfully the beer was excellent. Call ahead to confirm the food option, if that is a critical factor in your visit, as it was with ours. With better preparation, we would have eaten before we came and likely enjoyed a longer stay. Arguably one of the most impressive breweries in the country - especially if you are measuring the quality of their New England/Hazy IPAs. Having access to them in DC, is truly a dream come true. Visiting them in the summertime is a real treat as they have both a rooftop patio, outdoor seating on the ground floor, and of course indoor seating. One of the first breweries also to pioneer continuous innovation by constantly releasing new amazing beers - especially in the IPA category. From single-hop varieties to complex hop combinations - mostly in the Double Hazy IPA area. Couple of tips: feel free to bring your own food, go for the IPA samplers that they have on the board, plan on bringing back a 4-pack (you can't get the full selection elsewhere in DC), and bring friends to the chill space. I have zero desire to live in Washington DC or Baltimore where I am doing work, but damn I would love to live closer to this place or at minimum find a solid beer trade partner so I could have their stuff all the time. As a dark beer lover the choices have been slimmer but the ones that I've tried have been quite tasty on the two times I've visited. I appreciated the friendly bartenders who definitely made us feel welcome. I did chuckle when he warned me about the 13.5% ABV on the Logical Progression Imperial Stout. Please note that they offer bottles to stay for those who do enjoy dark ales and stouts. The outside seating is wonderful and created a very comfortable place to sit and talk over beers. Other Half Brewing Company is a craft brewery that opened in Brooklyn, New York in 2014. It was founded by business partners Matt Monahan, Andrew Burman and head brewer Sam Richardson. Richardson grew up in Portland, Oregon and got his start brewing through Oregon State University's Fermentation Science Program. After finishing school, he moved to Brooklyn and began working at Greenpoint Beer & Ale Company. Here he met Monahan and Burman who were both originally from the Washington D.C. area. They had a dream to open their own brewery with a simple mission: to create beers that they wanted to drink from a company that they wanted to be a part of. The brewery's name is a reference to the fact that they wanted to represent the "Other Half" of the beer industry. Through a Craigslist ad, the partners found an industrial garage located under the Gowanus Expressway in Brooklyn's Carroll Gardens neighborhood. At the time, that area wasn't so desirable. The land sits next to the Gowanus Canal which is NYC's most polluted body of water. In spite of the odds against them, Other Half's reputation and popularity grew at a very fast rate. In addition to their original location in Carroll Gardens, Other Half now has locations in Brooklyn's Domino Park, Manhattan's Rockefeller Center, Finger Lakes (Bloomfield, New York), Buffalo, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. Several new breweries have also popped up in Brooklyn since Other Half opened; the borough has turned into a brewer's paradise. Prior to Other Half opening, Brooklyn only had three breweries. My family and I visited Other Half's Washington, D.C. location (which opened in October 2020) recently while we were staying in the area for a short vacation. I've visited Other Half's three NYC taprooms, but was especially excited to visit the DC facility because it is their largest production facility and taproom. Located in DC's Ivy City neighborhood, the facility is housed inside the old Pappas Tomato Factory. There's still an old railroad boxcar on display in the courtyard. There's plenty of seating and even a small arcade area (which my older son enjoyed exploring). After looking over the draught menu, I ordered a flight which included "Out For Trout" (Double IPA), "Vapor Rings" (Double New England IPA), "Tomato Factory" (DNEIPA), "All Motueka Everything" (DNEIPA), "Plates On Plates" (Triple New England IPA), and "Limited Time Offer" (TNEIPA). Everything was fantastic! My family and I brought in some take-out food to eat while I enjoyed my flight. I purchased a four-pack of "Knuckle And Claw" (DNEIPA; collaboration with Bissell Brothers Brewing) and a bottle of "Barrel-Aged Birthday Kooks" (Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout; collaboration with Omnipollo) before leaving. As a beer fan, personal top breweries come and go. But for me Other Half as been one of the absolute best for the last few years. It's always special when we get their cans and kegs in Honolulu, but the shipping time and conditions, even when ideal, still don't allow for an accurate picture of their sometimes delicate creations. Last year I got to visit the Rockefeller Center location a few times on a trip to New York and someday I want to visit the original in Brooklyn. Thankfully a recent class reunion trip to Washington, DC gave the opportunity to visit one of their ever-expanding taprooms and breweries. Of course, it ended up being my favorite beer spot of the trip, further cemented by how much my friends who had never been loved it as well. Other Half is a super inclusive brewery by business practice and mantra. It's easy for all to feel welcome here, from the signs to the restrooms for anyone. It's also extremely dog friendly, which was noticeable as soon as we got there on our first visit; my friends even asked to come back a few days later and brought their excited pup along who also loved being there. They also have pinball and arcade machines. This location is in a complex of other similarly modern businesses near Union Market in NE DC. There's an axe throwing place, a famous local coffee chain, and other businesses nearby so you can have a complete day out all from one spot. In warmer months, it looks like they have a ton of amazing outdoor seating on the roof, ground level outside the bar, and around their decorated real box car. They have a brewery system here, which makes its own unique selections; this facility is across the walkway out the main door. Inside they have refrigerators with a ton of canned 4-packs and bottled beer selections to take home. I chose one special bottle to share at home, an imperial stout with freeze dried space ice cream as a nod to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum nearby. They have a ton of fun merch too: shirts, hats, dog items, etc. The staff was amazing on every visit: bartenders were friendly and happy to talk about beer and explain about their other locations. Even workers leaving the brewery for their shift beers were happy to hear what we thought. The bar is divided into two, which would be helpful on busy nights, which I imagine this place gets. They focus on hazy IPAs, IPAs, pilsners, stouts, sours, etc.; it's always fun to visit a taproom as they put things on draft that will never be canned. I was also lucky enough to visit around their 10th Anniversary celebration so there were a ton of collaboration beers to try. I mostly stick to flight sizes, but after trying everything over our few visits, I went into the on-premises can list, which was a hit with my friends as well. They have a few selections of sodas and canned seltzers, plus usually one cider and one NA beer on tap for those who don't want to imbibe. They have special events as well, we say a raw oyster bar pop up one day that seemed super popular. Prices were reasonable, maybe higher than other places but on par with the quality of the beers. It was so nice to be able to bring our own food while enjoying delicious craft beer. Everyone enjoyed their beers. There's also cocktails and seltzer water which we appreciated. Prices were pretty cheap too! I got the sour and it was like juice (which I prefer). So good!! Although it was rainy, the outdoor space heaters kept us nice and warm. What an incredible spot! I came here during a cold day and originally planned on sitting inside but then went outside and found the beautiful, large patio with some empty tables. There are heat lamps a plenty so regardless of how cold it is, you will be comfortable there. You can order either 4 oz or 12 oz pours. I really liked that all of their beers are unique but they're really good. I did 5 4oz pours total and really enjoyed all of them. I highly recommend the mmmm berry (sour), cannibaltown (smoothie sour that basically tastes like an alcoholic smoothie, trust me, it's really good!), and the brkfst (Hefeweizen). They also had frozen beer cocktail of the cannibaltown flavor. The service was excellent and efficient; they also came out to the patio to take drink glasses away. It's also dog friendly throughout the brewery, both inside and outside. They also have food trucks and update them on their website. They have a bunch of options on tap and they had some video games inside. I think it's a great stop to hang with friends and chat / play games. Pet friend as well! Must go spot if you're visiting DC. Outdoor space galore. Indoor space is still roomy, but so much outdoor seating. The seating ranges to the front, side, back, and rooftop. Dog, baby, kids, big group friendly. If you like sports, there's plenty of tvs in the back. If you don't like sports, you can literally sit in the million other places available. Dogs aren't allowed on the rooftop though. Tap list is grand. You can choose 4oz or 12oz pours. The 12oz pours is the better deal. It's 3x the beer for only double the cost of a 4oz pour. However, if you're like me and don't want to commit, they'll pour you a tiny taster or you can make your own flight with the 4oz pours. There was a food truck that started serving at 1pm on Saturday, however, you can bring your own food. They also serve snacks at the bar too. The front bar has a large of their to-go cans/bottles and merch. Service was friendly. They're quick to acknowledge you. If you're anxious like me, you don't have to overthink if they saw you or if you need to make aggressive eye contact to make sure they saw you. Bike parking right in front. Can't bring your bikes inside. Plenty of scooter parking out front as well. Didn't notice if there were any limitations with street parking though. Hoping to be back in DC so I can make another trip and pack some cans to bring back home. If you haven't been here, you're missing out on good beer and better vibes. read more

Finally made it to OH DC location. It's a hike and not really safely walkable from the district. You can take the metro bus which drops you right there as there are no close metro subway stops. Or go for ride share. Whatever you do get there. Their taproom is pretty good sized with a lengthy bar with lots of seating as well as a large patio. They have a gift shop with beer fridges to purchase cans/bottles to go. The beer lineup at this place is amazing - all I sampled were top notch quality and highly rated. They don't really do fights but you can order 5 oz pours and make your own little flight. read more

I love that this tap room is clean and industrial but offers nice covered deck seating in the back. OH is a must for us during the summer because dogs are allowed inside. We always post up inside near the bathrooms so our dogs will be out of the way and in the AC. Dog friendly, kid friendly, good beer what more could you ask for? They do not have their own food but every time I've been there they've had a delicious food truck or food stand outside! If you're extra hungry I'd eat beforehand as there's not a whole lot open around there IMO. read more

There's also an upstairs that had a private costume party getting underway while I was there. The brewery focuses on its brews, but has several menus on hand for nearby restaurants that do takeout and delivery. Nice touch. THE BLACK AND WHITE: The two times I've come here have been in the winter time and DC is not known for it's mild winters. That being said, I would definitely come back as long as I keep trying out their beers! I got the Chicken and Broccoli hazy IPA the first time and boy was it delicious. They were out of the milkshake IPAs. Second time, the milkshake IPA was in stock...but the Chicken and Broccoli hazy IPA was out. I'll make it one day where I'll have the option of getting both. THE FINAL BAMBOO: The beer here is next level! I truly enjoy their milkshake IPAs and double hazys. I'm a loyal drinker of Other Half in New York, so on a trip to DC it only made sense to visit. This location is 10-15 minutes away from the hustle and bustle of the national mall. It's also HUGE, with plenty of indoor and outdoor sesting options. There are often food vendors on site, or you can bring your own eatin's. Today I stopped by with three friends to savor some cold brews. We got all that, and a bag of popcorn. Then, soon after, a second bag of popcorn. That spicy Bjorn Qorn pairs perfectly with hoppy beer. This is a very cool spot to drink beer and have fun. As an out-of-town guest, I say a humble thanks that a place like this exists. Other Half is probably the best brewery in New York City and it's now selling beer in DC. They do epic (mostly citrusy, New-England-style) IPAs and a smaller number of amazing stouts. That's really all you need to know. I have yet to physically go into the space in DC because of COVID lockdown with kids, but I hear epic things about it including some rooftop space and that it's next to an axe-throwing parlor, that said I have done the curbside pickup and the beer is fantastic. My wife and I used to make it to the Brooklyn location of Other Half at least once a year, show up when they opened and drink our way though all the beers we could and then get a bigger pour of the two or three we liked best. It was one of the highlights of our trips to New York City every time. The beer is just as good in DC, the only frustration I'm having is more to do with my COVID-sensitivity and thus doing pick-up only. I have to pick beer before tasting it and that's much more complicated than doing 3-5 flights of 4 oz pours to pick what I like best to have a full pour of and take home. The most recent time, we got four four-packs and 1 of the 4 (Triple Forever Galaxy) was as amazing as the Other Half beers I'm used to, but the other three were merely very, very good. They had more ripe melon notes than pure dry citrus. I'm sure as I get to know the beers more (when I can have them more than once a year), I'll get better at picking what I really want even with pickup and things will be even more awesome when I can sit down. read more

Great relatively new brewery in Ivy City. Fun, vibrant, cool, friendly, delicious. Untappd named Other Half (flagship in Brooklyn, NY) in the top ten breweries and I knew it was time for me to experience their place in NE DC. Other Half focuses on IPAs. This week they are featuring IPAs made with New Zealand hops - they got it right. I had several 4 oz. samplers; all were exceptional. So good in fact that I had to take a case of 4 packs to go home and enjoy later. There is plenty of seating on open air picnic benches and more limited seating indoors.
