Wow, what a perfect place to start off the day in the morning! Coming from the UES, admittedly this is not a super easy and quick place to get to, but that being said I'd make the trek again and again. First of all the drip coffee was superb, I can not fully remember what beans they use but I can envision the details of the bags in the store. I felt like I was transported to a new place when I walked in here and sat and read my book. It was so cozy covered in wood accents and plants and defintely felt like a neighborhood spot. It was so bright from natural light and the atmosphere just made you want to stay. I sat and read my book for about an hour and a half and that was just a perfect time in itself! read more

This is a nice cafe. The muffin was delish. The tea, hot. The seating cozy. Rather, then sitting on the bench or club chair I chose the table next to the window. Great music. I love the plants. Absolutely love how affordable and cute this place is. I am usually used to paying over $10 for 2 lattes in Manhattan, but when my bf and I went in for an oat milk cappuccino and oat milk latte- it was $9.50! That is a steal in my books. The inside has lots of plants and an earthly industrial feel. Not too many places to sit, but not completely lacking as well. The barista was nice made our drinks quickly. Let's start with the good; excellent coffee and the occasional fresh out of the oven and delicious baked good. Ambience is casual, my fave is the plants around outside the entrance. Now service is where this place suffers. These guys literally cannot be bothered to be even just a little nice and they're absolutely doing you a favor when they make your drink or bag your baked good. During the weekday morning rush, you have to make sure to keep your eyes on the barista at all times lest he call on you as the fifth person in line ready to take your order. If you are not ready to give your order, be prepared to be silently judged. On the weekends, it is quite exactly the opposite. During the slower times you must be very careful not to interrupt their leisurely conversation with someone who isn't even placing an order. This has been my experience consistently for the past three years. I still come here because it is the only premium coffee offering east of Clinton Street on grand so that's that. read more

When in NYC never stop by OST Cafe on 511 Grand St, New York, NY 10002. Let me explain my experience yesterday. Upon walking up to the counter, the register screen was turned around from a previously completed transaction. Waiting to be served I observed the screen and was greeted with a, "Why are you looking at our register?" Not a "Hey, how can I help you?" or "My mistake" and swiveling the screen away from view. (The screen just had an itemized list of beverages for purchase.) After ordering, the male in the back looked my way and sang, "Go outside" while the other making my beverage, chuckled. As a NYC native and business owner, I expected better. I will never step foot in this establishment again I will make sure no one else that I know will either. Great coffee shop option if you are in the area! Stopped by here quickly with a friend since we were at the park nearby. The coffee shop has some seating indoors. I was able to snag a seat, but the seating is limited and close together. I ordered a latte with oat milk. This was a great tasting latte and they even added some cute latte art. There was a long line out the door, so it took a while to get the coffee. We weren't in a rush, so we didn't mind the wait. The atmosphere was nice and casual. I (finally) went there today - with a friend, in the late morning - and fortunately we had no problem getting seating, as it's a tiny place. It's attractive, with exposed brick walls. There was music playing continually, but it wasn't too terribly loud. The young woman working there was very pleasant. I got a small regular coffee ($1.75), but it was just "fair". However; all other aspects were fine, including an "A" rating from the Health Department (also, my friend told me the restroom was very clean) and I'm grateful to have a coffee house in our neighborhood. read more

Ost is a very nice little coffee shop on an otherwise crummy block on the lower east side. The man who works in the mornings named Luke is always very friendly and the coffee is good. The young man who during the day named Dave is the reason I signed up for Yelp and am leaving a two star review. This coffee shop is rather small and it always has nice music playing in it, but Dave is the loudest person I have ever heard in my entire life. He seems to have no control over the volume of his voice and addresses every single person who comes in to order as loudly as possible. He does not seem to understand that people want a quiet experience in a coffee shop and not hear stories about his famous aunt, or whatever nonsense, he feels like talking about. I have repeatedly tried to work inside the shop, but it is simply impossible because Dave is so loud. Last time I was there, he was singing along with the music very loudly and having a 20 minute conversation with a friend. I looked at the two people next to me who were also trying to work and they looked visibly upset, but no one said anything. If it was possible to enjoy this lovely little shop, I would give it a much higher review. as is, I cannot recommend anyone go there unless you are getting a coffee to go or you do not mind having someone's dominate every second you are in there. read more

This is my favorite cafe. I can never get into doing computer work at home, so I have to force myself outside to become productive. Seeking a quiet coffee shop in lower Manhattan is impossible, so discovering this middle-of-nowhere gem almost feels like a mirage... but its real and so perfect and charming. Barista/owner is so nice. You don't feel rushed to leave. The only type of customers that come in and out of this place appear to be neighborhood residents. Perfect. No tourists. No hollering large groups. Anyway, I got plenty done since the cafe was quiet enough for me to focus. Want to read your next novel, but get distracted easily by noise? Come here. I used to live right around the corner from the original Ost on Avenue A, now I'm a homeowner on Grand Street, and wouldn't you know there's a familiar face to welcome me to the block here on Grand Street. I'd argue that this Ost has a friendlier staff than the Ave A location, but they don't have wine here like they do in East Village (maybe someday?). That's a bit of a hit, but I was always more of an Ost coffee drinker than an Ost wine drinker anyway.
