And that's exactly what I found at Oslo Coffee in Ladera Ranch. This place isn't trying to seduce you with reclaimed wood or Edison bulbs. No faux industrial chic or baristas in fedoras. It's beige. Stark, even. A Scandinavian shrug of a building with plenty of tables, inside and out. On my visit, the usual suspects were in attendance--teens glued to their phones, students hammering at laptops, and suburban moms exchanging war stories over lattes. But then the coffee hits you. And it's good. Better than it has any right to be in a place that looks like a minimalist waiting room. It smells like something worth waking up for, and it drinks clean, no bitterness, no burnt afterthoughts. Just good, honest coffee. I dumped in a little cream and sugar because, well, I'm not here to impress anyone. Out of curiosity or maybe hunger, I grabbed the Norwegian salmon toast. Great coffee and food, unique vibe as it is a Scandinavian inspired coffee shop with simple but warm vibes. There's a little kid area inside and a doggie bowl outside. The service is always welcoming and helpful. I always get the Scandinavian Latte for a warm spiced and salty flavor that is perfectly balanced. Not going to lie this place has slowly integrated itself as my new third place. The drinks from the ingredients to craft put into them is top notch. In-house syrups, whole spices/herbs, organic whole milk, seed oil free kitchen, the best apple cider Ive had and most importantly top notch beans & tea. The service is terrific and a few of the workers are even starting to know me on a first name basis. They go out of their way to answer any question you have, give great recommendations and have the best music tastes as the background music inside really sets a nice warm tonal vibe that keeps me productive. The inside is so life-full with many popping, bold colors, lovely graphic design & artwork placed throughout, fun furniture/seating and does not feel like any other cafe I've been in. If I could describe it best I feel like I'm in a blues clue episode when inside. Went here the on their day for coffee and ended up having a latte and avocado toast. Coffee was tasty and served in a coffee cup instead of a paper cup which was a nice touch. Avocado toast was the perfect size with tomatoes and pickled onions and sprouts. Very fresh with just the right amount of avocado. Very spacious and bright inside. Friendly staff and the drinks came out quickly. The campfire is pretty tasty, and tastes exactly like the ingredients sound like it should. Ladera has often suffered from chain food restaurants but over the years it has slowly but surely invited more independent establishments to create a broader and diverse of selection. So having a Scandinavian coffee shop like Oslo certainly first the criteria of something different and exciting and new. The ambience is certainly cute and welcoming to the large crowds gathering and waiting in line. The service was rather curt and impatient which was shocking. The spiced chai from the Soul brand however was too spiced and made for a rather unpleasant experience as an oddity to have an iced drink be so spicy without a counter to balance it out. Maybe this was an off end of the day encounter during a soft opening and still working the kinks out of the process so hoping for a greatly improved return visit. read more

I love seeing new small businesses open in the area. I visited on the second day of the soft opening. The line was out the door. The shop decoration is very cute and millennial. I got the Viking tonic and sadly, it was not a good espresso tonic. The tonic flavors were off-putting. The espresso shot was not strong enough, hopefully they can improve the ratios in the future. I had a few friends to tell me to try this place since they had a great experience here. Upon arrival, the shop was decorated in some type of indie cozy vibe that seems great for catching up with a friend for coffee. The service was quite alright as it seems pretty busy when the time I went so it was just more so get in and out. I ordered the Scandinavian Coffee as it seems like it was their signature coffee. Sadly I'm not really impressed with the taste of the 7 dollar coffee since it tasted really watered down and felt like there was little to no caffeine at all. Overall i love this place and how kid friendly it it (though i wish there was a changing table in the bathroom) There is one odd thing though. I'm not sure what oil they use to cook, but every time I leave this place I smell like I personally was working in the kitchen. I noticed the smell on my clothes the first time but thought it was maybe from something else. But I went back recently and sure enough, my clothes and even my hair smelled like oil. I used to work in the restaurant industry and this smell is definitely coming from whatever oil they use for the food. I'm not sure if I am the only one to ever notice this (and i tend to be someone who is sensitive to smell) but even my wife was able to smell it on my hair (which was washed the night before) as well as my clean shirt. This place randomly popped up on google maps when I was searching for new coffee shops in OC, and I'm so so glad it did. I visited on a random day and the interior is SO cute and stylish. They have an extensive menu, but I was sold on the seasonal summer menu and had to order the campfire drink. I also ordered the scandinavian, which was tasty. BUT the campfire was absolutely delicious, and they roasted the marshmallow right in front of you! It was so yummy I came back the next day to try other items on their summer menu- sit back relax with lavender and tahini, and the peach cobbler. There is so much thought put into every little detail here, and it is evident that somebody has put lots of time, love, and hard work to make this shop happen! They did a great job, because it's beautiful inside, and the menu is concise but unique. There is plenty of room to sit, lots of light, good music playing, and even a selection of board games to play. The salmon focaccia sandwich was delicious. The only reason this is not five stars is because it felt very overpriced, the coffee was just okay, and staff felt a little rushed or preoccupied versus warm or friendly. $26 before tip for two espresso drinks and a sandwich is too much to make this place a habit, but if you want a little treat in the form of a curated coffee shop experience, it's worth a visit! read more
