I visited in July 2014
The salmon and avocado hand roll (temaki) was dire. The rice wasn't cooked well enough and didn't hold together, whereas the seaweed wrap was CHEWY! I had to gnaw at it until it pulled apart. I expected it to be crunchy and fall apart. It was worse than Yo Sushi, and that's saying a lot!
The main meal was very spicy, but I could tell that these spices were just covering up an otherwise bland and overcooked noodle soup bowl.
We were the ONLY people there, but it still somehow took almost forty-five minutes for our food to get to us. One of our group even had his turn up after the rest of us were halfway done with our meal.
And let's not even get to the try-hard ambience. The Japanese theme is excessive and drastic compared to other restaurants to the point of unwelcoming. It feels as though the surroundings are trying to make up for the crime that is the food.
News flash: You don't have to say "New York Chizukeki" (say it out loud) for me to understand that, yes, we are in a Japanese restaurant, and yes, I am about to have a "New York Cheesecake". I don't care that it's "Authentic Japanese" - I prefer to understand what I am ordering without having to try understanding etymological loanwords and mouth them out.
Finally, the food was horrendously overpriced for what we got. I heard from someone that the excuse made was that the utensils were shipped in from Japan. Maybe that money could've been saved and could've gone towards decent food instead.
Conclusion: There is no better Japanese restaurant in Dundee simply because there is NO other Japanese restaurant in Dundee. Unless there is and I'm not aware of it. Oh god please tell me there's another one and save me from the horrific experience that is remembering this memory and sharing it with others when they say they want to try Oshibori out. read more
