When my husband and I first moved to Dundee, we were dying for some Thai food. We could find some, but whether it was good or not was debatable. Hubby found this place on a whim and went in. He loved it. When I came back to Dundee, I had my doubts when he kept raving about how wonderful this place was. It was fabulous. It went beyond my wildest expectations. Service was good, the place is clean and very welcoming. The owner was an absolute sweetheart and even though it was the middle of winter, I asked her for a Thai iced tea...forgetting that I am no longer in the USA and the Brits don't like iced tea. She was surprised yet pleased I knew what it was and that I wanted it! Wherever I go for any Thai restaurant, I get pad thai or their yellow curry potato soup...I decided to stick to pad thai with chicken and shrimp. That had to be the most flavorful meal I had ever had in terms of Thai food. I truly enjoyed my entire experience there. So much so, I went back a second time and a third time -- it was consistent. Thumbs up from me. Hubby can't stop raving about the place to our friends in Dundee...I miss our time in Scotland and hope we can return again -- especially for the yummy food here. read more

My first ever Thai food experience happened in this restuarant. I was quite impressed by the amount of dishes on the menu, but when it came to ordering, I did find it difficult choosing, especially since I had never ate Thai before. In the end I opted for sweet potato fritters, Combination 2 (which consists of roast duck with plum sauce, chu chi chicken, coconut rice, salad and Thai pakoras) while my partner had the spring rolls to start and chicken in a sweet and spicy red wine sauce with noodles. While Thai food may not be quite to my taste, I could definetly appreciate the quality of food I was getting and quite enjoyed what I had. My partner absolutely devoured his meal! I probably would go back, but would have to investigate the dishes more beforehand and possibly try another combination. Absolutely beautiful inside and in a great location. Been traveling around Scotland for 1 week and though the fish & chips and other UK foods are delicious - I started to miss Asian spicy foods.. Husband is here for work and I'm left wondering around town- used yelp to help me find a local lunch spot and happily found Rama! Conveniently located near the Holiday Inn Express and Apex Hotel (where we stayed). Pad Thai is fantastic - asked for it to be spicy and Michael the owner delivered ! Pad Thai was spot on and delicious with tender chicken and green onions and bean sprouts. The lunch menu is great in value - for 6 pounds you get any entree , for 9 pounds you get a 3 course meal, not bad. Dinner is around 13 pounds but portions are good- so well worth for quality and authenticity of the food! read more

Probably my favourite restaurant in Dundee. I went to uni in Dundee but for my first 2 years there I didn't even know this place existed - what a shame. When you arrive you are greeted by the owner/manager which is always a nice way to start a meal and once seated you are presented with the most extensive menu in the civilised world - there are over 200 dishes so if you are indecisive I recommend you proceed with caution. My advice; make notes. With that in mind I shouldn't need to mention that there are plenty of options on the menu for every dietary need conceivable but I might as well make that clear! The food is absolutely incredible, comes in healthy sized portions and is beautifully prepared, usually with all sorts of vegetables cut into flowers and other edible ornaments. The staff are attentive and friendly and the restaurant itself is very nicely decorated with a traditional Thai theme and some of the most elaborately carved tables you will see. The pricing is just about bang on and all in all I couldn't rate this place any higher. Go. (NB - on Friday and Saturday nights be sure to make a reservation, this is a popular place) read more

Evening menu is extensive, if a touch expensive for Dundee but all the food has been lovely and it would take a lot of visits to sample it all. Atmosphere is good and there are often quite a few Asian diners, which I imagine is a good sign of authenticity and quality (never having been to Thailand myself). The real hidden gem though is the lunchtime menu. It's close to the city centre but not in the footfall so is often quite quiet but you get a 1-3 course menu, served quickly and with a good selection, all for under £7-9. You'd be hard pressed to find a better lunch, especially at that price. It's hard not to order the Pad Thai every time as it tastes so wonderful and it's clearly all fresh ingredients. Would highly recommend a visit. read more

This Thai restaurant is a great place to dine; it's always busy so it seems at least some people agree with me. Along with other restaurants I've reviewed it's moderately expensive but worth every penny. The food and drink choice is great and I'm sure the menu accomodates nearly everyone. Service is quick and friendly which adds to the pleasant dining experience. I've tried some great new dishes there and will continue to do so. read more

My wife and I went there for our 20th anniversary tonight. In all the time I have known her, she has never complained in a restaurant until tonight. It's just not in her nature. But imagine the worst Chinese takeaway you have ever had, and then imagine being charged treble the price for it. They wanted 60 pounds for a starter and main for 2, with 3 drinks. My chicken dish tasted of fish and was mainly hard undercooked vegetables. My wife's seafood meal was obviously frozen and microwaved. It's such a shame because we ate there a few years ago and it was brilliant. In all fairness they knocked the price of our drinks off the bill, but we will never eat there again. Just don't bother. read more

Rama is a great restaurant - I have eaten here a number of times and it has always been tasty. It feels quite authentic too and the waiting staff are very nice indeed. I don't feel its too expensive for what you receive as the quality of food and presentation is very good. Because of its location I quite often forget it is there because its on a street that people generally don't drive along. It is central though and has a car park opposite. You can see it from the Tay Bridge as you drive off. It is a clean place too, everything looks spotless and neat. A good range of options for food even though it is all Thai. I visited this restaurant for the lunch time deal- for £5 they do a range of nice lunch time sized portions of a Thai rice/ noodle based meals. It was delicious, and i'd certainly be back to try the full price evening menu. As other reviewers have mentioned, the staff are friendly, and it was quite busy even on a weekday lunch. They ere very accomodating towards our 6 month old daughter, always a bonus Oh, and the furniture is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! would make a great place for a special meal in the evening- but definitely get along for tasty lunch time treats read more

Love it! Excellent food, polite friendly staff and the atmosphere is so warm and exciting! I first came here for my parent's silver wedding anniversary and loved the fact that I actually had to eliminate potential options on the menu (I am a vegetarian and 9 times out of 10 it's either macaroni cheese - which I hate, goat's cheese tart - which I hate, or a plain pasta with tomato sauce - which I like but gets a little boring. I usually end up having to ask for something specially because most places think 1 option is enough). Here I was spoiled for choice! I had delicious spicy food and had a great time. The second time was a couple of months ago for my 21st birthday. I had the sweet potato fritters to start, which were crisp on the outside and soft without being mush on the outside, accompanied by a sweet chilli sauce which got my approval, being a sweet chilli sauce fanatic. For my main course I had tofu and various vegetables in a black bean sauce (very spicy - just how I like it!) with the Thai sticky rice, which lived up to its name! I chose the coconut surprise for dessert, which was a refreshing coconut ice cream in a perfect brandy snap basket with fresh fruit. The range of desserts could perhaps be a little more varied and extensive, but a restaurant which gives me more options for my main than for my dessert is a rarity :D The staff were very efficient and helpful and smiled a lot, the place was packed with people and it was obviously very busy. The decor in the restaurant is truly beautiful - a fantastic setting to eat your dinner, with carved wooden furniture and bright pictures on the walls. I also just looked at the website which is visually appealing and very informative. I can't wait to go back and work my way through the rest of the menu! read more

The owner came out to see how the food and service was which is a great touch as this is rare in the United States. Ate there 2x during my stay in Dundee. my boyfriend and i went for a meal here.the greeting was very warm as we entered.the menu was very lengthy,i wasnt sure about some of the dishes and the waitress was very helpful in explaining the different strengths of the food.The starters were quite large portions but once you started it was hard to stop,but the main meal was way beyond anything i had tasted before.The taste was perfect and the portions were 100%.i would thoroughly recommend The Rama to anyone who really savours thai food. excellent staff,hygiene,service What more can i say.... read more

I came here today for a leaving lunch with my mum. First impressions? The location is fantastic, near enough to the centre to be easy to walk to, but far enough to be in close proximity to the quay. Unfortunately, there aren't great views onto this currently, as they are doing a lot of road work and the demolition of a horrible 1960s high rise building is being carried out. It will look better again soon. The restaurant itself looks very in keeping with the cuisine, with beautiful carved wooden chairs and decor. I have heard from other reviewers that the only drawback of this restaurant is the cost of the dinner menu, which is apparently very expensive. Luckily this did not affect us as we had two options: the set lunch for £8.95 which comprises of a starter, main and pudding, or the light lunch for £5.95, where you can choose between a selection of Thai curries, wok and noodle dishes. Both my mum and I chose the light lunch and opted for the Thai green curry, though she asked for it with chicken, and I got the tofu option. As is the case in many Thai restaurants, the vegetarian options are not clearly marked on the menu, and one could easily imagine that the owners think chicken and fish is vegetarian, as these are listed as veggie. I asked the guy behind the bar, who assured me that this just meant "can be made vegetarian". Apparently Rama Thai are able to cater for many dietary requirements and intolerances, which is good! Service was fast, friendly yet non-intrusive. There was a good portion of curry and rice, quite a bit of tofu (restaurants can be very stingy with this), and a variety of vegetables which were nicely cooked, and certainly not the overcooked mush which is far too common in this country. There were aubergines, mangetout, bamboo shoots, broccoli and red peppers. I asked for it to be spicy, and they definitely made it very spicy! The sauce was brimming with chillies and other aromatic spices. My only slight criticism would be more a matter of personal taste. There was a lot of fennel in the sauce, and I am not a fan of anything aniseedy. That said, I am sure loads of other people would love this. I haven't been to that many restaurants in Dundee, but from those I have visited, I would definitely suggest Rama for those who like something slightly more exotic. Rama is tasty, the lunch deal is a steal and the service is great. I can imagine there being a great ambiance in the evening. I shall be back to sample more next year... read more

Rama is my favourite restaurant in Dundee. I always recommend it to my family and friends. The food is exceptional and arrives very quickly after ordering. The service is friendly and the serving staff are very attentive. Beautiful decor and great atmosphere. Love it, love it, love it! If you've not been then you should go. It's friendly, the food is fantastic, the service is impecable. If you haven't tried Thai before go on a lunch time as you can get a main for £5 or a 3 course set menu for £8. Eveings are pricier but well worth it. The only downside are the chairs are really heavy and difficult to manouver! read more
