I dined here at Maki & Ramen with it being the only place near my hotel that would take walk-ins. I was promptly seated at the bar. I ordered a few pieces of nigiri and the black garlic tonkotsu. Unfortunately the rice on the nigiri was stale and somewhat tough. Thankfully the ramen broth was very flavorful. You also get a fairly generous portion of tender pork. All-in-all a surprisingly delicious bowl of ramen.

A little fed up with the touristic gastronomic part of Edinburgh, we found that place a little bit down the road, and it was the perfect spot to have a quick lunch before another round of walking holes in our shoes. The ambient was asian, the ramen excellent, the sushi appetizer quite alright.

While this place did satisfy my Asian food cravings, it was rather pricey. My friend and I came by on a Tuesday evening for dinner since the wait at Wagamama was too long. Instead, we made a quick call here and it was not too busy. There are also group tables that offer a traditional Japanese seating arrangement where you take off your shoes, which I thought was pretty cool too. To start off, my friend and I shared the Salmon and Avocado Roll (£8.80). It was simple and basic, but solid. The roll was definitely overpriced, but it was worth a try when I haven't have sushi in awhile. For my main dish, I ordered the Hell Ramen (£12.50) because if there's a spicy option, I will always choose it. The bowl of ramen was pretty good besides the thick slices of cha siu, which I found rather dry and flavorless. I would opt for a different meat option since this wasn't done very well. But the rest of the ramen from the noodles to broth was tasty --although it could've definitely been more spicy! This is a decent spot to satisfy your Japanese cravings, but also comes with a high pricetag. I'd still return whenever I want some ramen though.

Wow. I cannot believe this place exists in Edinburgh of all places. I really enjoyed my experience at Maki. I ordered the tonkostu black ramen and my boyfriend got the shoyu. Portions were fair and large. The noodles weren't my favorite (a bit too straight for me), but they were thick like I want them and the broth was really flavorful and comforting. I added a bunch of the spicy flakes and oil that were on the table already to my broth and it made it better. The soft-boiled egg is one of the most flavorful eggs I've had in a ramen. I gave the meat to my boyfriend and it seemed to be cooked well. Shoyu broth was pretty good too. The flavor reminded me of roasted pork. We also got a sushi roll as an appetizer to share. A little pricey for a fairly standard roll, but it was made well so worth it. Prices on the ramens were reasonable too and what I normally pay in the U.S. Servers were friendly and came to talk to us during and after our meal so that was nice too. BONUS: They give you complimentary green tea for your table. It was necessary because the ramen noodles/broth made us SO full.

Came here on a cold rainy day looking for something warm and filling, and since this place was close by, decided to stop in for dinner. I was quickly seated, given a menu by waitstaff and settled on the chicken katsu curry with a coke. The wait wasn't too long, despite the place being pretty busy, and the meal was everything I hoped for. Chicken was crispy, rice was fluffy, and the curry was flavorful, and ultimately very filling. It also came with a side of miso soup, also delicious. The ambiance was really nice inside, good taste in music, and I found the sticky note wall at my table to be very unique and interesting.

The food is good but the service was strange. The hostess didn't want to give us a table ( the place was almost empty). Instead she put us behind a screen on a table with bar stools. Only after we insisted on a proper table she reluctantly moved us. After that everything else was fine. Food was good but the service...

A lovely place to get dinner! We spent all day walking around the Edinburgh city center and we stumbled upon this gem while looking for a place to eat dinner. It was very easy to get a table and they served us very quickly! Their salmon ramen which I ordered was delicious and so was the fried pumpkin! Recommend for a good dinner in Edinburgh!

Good ramen & sushi but customer service could be better. Seems they preselect certain types for better window tables so that was disappointing when we weren't accomodated with the table we like even while it was bot taken at time of check in

I'm giving 3 stars for service. It seemed like there was no one around or available to take our order, check up on us or hand us the check. No one anticipated our needs. It took us 10 minutes to find a server to even look at us for the check. As far as the food, the tonkotsu ramen was very rich. The chicken teriyaki bento box tasted more like bbq kebabs with a hint of Indian spice for some odd reason. It did not taste like Japanese teriyaki due to the lack of sauce. But the sides were an interesting combo. There was one piece of broccoli, kimchi, pickled cabbage and miso soup. Overall, they should improve their service by anticipating the needs of their customers and be readily available.

Nicely laid out space with a few traditional sunken booths & all round view of the chefs at work. Water & green tea come as standard and the Post-it notes on which to doodle/write about your experience in the restaurant or whatever takes your fancy are a nice feature. Service was good & the food at least as good as in the city's more established Japanese restaurants. Range of drinks is fine. Menus could though already do with a reprint due to a few crossings out.

My new favourite ramen place in town. We tried their Black Tonkotsu Ramen and Beef Ramen, it were exceptionally good! Would definitely return for some more!

    vegan ramen

I got the vegan ramen and the edamame. The edamame was perfectly steamed and seasoned with a nice amount of rock salt. My main however was lacking in flavour. The broth was far more sweet and gingery than umami, and for a vegan dish it was seriously lacking in vegetables. Our server was friendly and fast, however the team seemed understaffed overall.

Sushi bosses and a nice bowl of hot Ramen!

    See all

Mediocre ramen that is priced far too high for its quality. This business only survives by carving a niche with little competition.
