With so many options for all-you-can-eat-sushi here in Rochester, I can't say this one is our favourite, but it does however hold a special place in my heart. Osaka is the first all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant in Rochester with their Chili location. Henrietta came after which then Chili eventually closed. Admittedly, it's been a couple years since I've been to Osaka. Hearing the switch in ownership, I was curious if there have been any changes. It's a yes and no for me. Starting with the good, I can see the quality of the food hasn't changed much. The menu for the most part stayed the same, and the items taste exactly how they did years ago. This is a good thing because I actually have never had an issue with Osaka's food. They've kept their extensive menu, and the items I ordered stretching from appetizers to kitchen food, to sushi have been fine. The appetizers come hot and fresh from the kitchen. Although the fish for the nigiri/sashimi/rolls could be better quality, it is passable and I've never had an issue. Another thing I immediately noticed is their upgrade to better dinnerware. Better presentation for the food, and they say people eat with their eyes. Where I can see some improvement is the service. We found our server to be very dull and came off as if he didn't want to be there. He did his job, but the bare minimum. He took our order and delivered it to us. We can see smiles on other staff members except him, but this didn't take away from our experience. Overall, $35ish bucks per person is a steal and you can definitely get your money's worth. read more

The food itself is good, especially the variety of sushi, though portions are small, so you'll need to reorder if you're hungry. The beef fried rice was overly oily and not recommended. When we arrived just after opening, the restaurant was empty. The staff seemed distracted one on her phone, the others in the back so it took a few minutes to get our drinks. I had to call another staff member to order a second drink because our waitress was nowhere to be found. Keep in mind there's only 1 hour and 30 minutes to eat, so slow service can feel frustrating. The environment is dark and a bit outdated, and it gets very loud once more people arrive. Overall, I recommend Osaka Sushi for sushi lovers or a relaxed group of friends who aren't in a hurry. My friends and I came here after a short hike and we were starving on a Thursday at 2 pm. After finding that this place serves AYCE sushi buffet for $20.95 at lunchtime, we knew we had to check it out. Upon entering, we were greeted with a cozy atmosphere. We scanned the QR code on the table and were introduced to a wide variety of hot and cold options, from hot appetizers to maki rolls, hand rolls, tempura, udon and don bowls. We chose a selection of sushi rolls, our favorite being the dragon roll with eel on top, salmon nigiri, spicy salmon nigiri, and salmon handroll (yes we love salmon.) the waitress was kind and quick to take our orders every 10-15 minutes. Restaurant is modern and aesthetically pleasing. Our huge order came out fast. Our server was very pleasant but there was a bit of a language barrier. She used an iPad for our orders, which I believe helps with speed of service. The squid is deep fried salt and pepper flavor. Crispy and one bite pieces. Deep fried scallops had a dollop of kewpie mayo on it. Crispy on the outside and moist inside. The Japanese eggplant was very tasty. There's an eel sauce on top of it. The skin is a bit tough but the flesh is soft and very meaty. Gyozas are deep fried and a favorite appetizer when available. Chicken teriyaki meal came with rice and a bed of sautéed Napa cabbage. Everything was cooked nicely and delicious. The eel roll with eek sauce was a favorite. Artic char roll was the number one roll for me. Crispy fried vermicelli noodles were wrapped with a rice paper summer roll wrapper and topped with artic char. The complex texture was such a pleasant party in my mouth. There were only a few memorable pieces like the Philly Roll, Smoked Salmon Nigiri, Teriyaki Beef, Stir Fried Udon, and Miso Soup. We didn't wait long to get seated and we were right helped right away. Rolls and Nigiri(3/5): There wasn't much flavor in the rolls as to why it wasn't as memorable for me. The simple rolls were okay for me. I liked that there was a nice ratio between filling and rice. Teriyaki Beef(3/5): The flavor was there, but it was really dry. Stir Fried Udon(4/5): I liked the flavor, but the texture of the udon was mushy. Miso Soup(3/5): I liked the miso that they used, but it lacked in tofu. AYCE for $32. 4 stars for Rochester, as I have been to much better AYCE, but this is probably the best you can get in the area. They do not take reservations (you come and sign in to a sheet). We came here on a Saturday evening and had about a 20-30 minute wait. I honestly had very low expectations seeing reviews, but was very pleasantly surprised. We did avoid the items that seemed to be just full of filler (no spicy tuna/salmon rolls, did not expect real "crab") and expected there to be a lot of rice in the sushi and knew the sashimi would be very small slices . Having said that, there was a pleasant amount of variety which was a good way to try many things in small portions. My favorites were all of the different types of roe/tobiko on cucumber, grilled shrimp skewer (peel on shrimp with garlic sauce), teriyaki short ribs, salmon sashimi, unagi (eel), special roll. Also enjoyed edamame, seaweed salad. Udon soup came out as a large portion and was nothing special, beef skewer was decent. I have never ever ever EVER had to pay for a freaking baby at a food establishment. I was charged $6 for a 10 month old to sit with us and drink MY BREAST MILK. Since we were charged, I asked the waitress for some avocado so I could feed that to my baby and she had the nastiest attitude and said no they can't, it just goes in the rolls. So I asked another waitress and she got us some avocado. We were treated terribly by that one waitress. Girl does not belong in the service industry. The staff is very friendly and helpful; orders are out in via IPad so there is no delay in food being prepared. The smoked salmon sushi pizza (center) is always a go to idea for me and it's always made to perfection. The cowboy roll is a non-traditional beef roll and is very tasty. Not a right place if you are sushi or sashimi lover. As you can see in the first picture. They give you big chunks of sushi rice and put thin & tiny pieces of fish on top. The ratio between fish piece and rice ball is terrible. You taste more rice flavor than fish. My friend and I were sick of massive portions of rice, we didn't finish all the rice since we wanted to save more room for other items. Anyway, one of the server warned us to pay extra charge for waste of food, no posted policy. I ordered eight pieces of sashimi, the portion was the smallest I have ever seen. The service here is horrible. I said to them at least five times of "thank you" whenever I received my water, orders and check. But I was talking to a wall. They don't care about your service experience. However, the appetizers and non-sushi items were actually good and decent. 4.5 out of 5. But it took forever to make my second order. Mom, little sissy and I hit up Osaka on a Saturday night. Zero wait on a Saturday? No way. It was surprisingly empty. We sat down and our drink orders were taken promptly. Little sis ordered an avocado roll and a spicy tuna roll. I had the chicken teriyaki and mom had the beef teriyaki. The rolls came out fast, along with the miso soups and salads that came with our teriyaki. That was where the good news was on pause. The service at Osaka was terrible. Little sis asked for spicy mayo three times before she got it. Mom and I had our meals delayed because the "kitchen was very busy" which normally would be understandable on a Saturday night, but the restaurant was surprisingly empty! Our meals took a long time to come out, and when they did, my chicken was already cooled to slightly-warmer than room temperature. Mom's beef was warmer. My daughter has been going through a hard time lately and asked if we could go out to sushi. Sushi is expensive (duh) but we made the funds happen and took her out because she's really just trying to get through. Shes 11. The menu and website says 10-11 AYCE price. We walked in and the hostess asked how old she was. She said 11. Then the hostess singled her out and made her stand under the 5 foot sign. She's 4'11" flatfoot (of course she was wearing sneakers) and the hostess stated "adult price!". I immediately interjected (my daughter is shy and does not like being singled out) that she's 11. She was born in September of 2012. The hostess replied- "policy is over 5' she is adult". So I told my daughter to slip off her sneakers. She did and the hostess relented as she is actually under 5'. So which is it? Age or height that determines the price? Honestly- we used to go to Osaka as often as we could but we will not be anymore. We tip well (40% on a $100+ check) and don't sit forever. We always eat every piece of sushi brought to us. It's just not worth it when they make arbitrary rules like "10-11 year olds are a certain price" and then you get to the restaurant and if they're taller they're the adult price?!? Come on. Also, ironically, I'm an adult but 4' 10"... so should I get the kid price? Oh- and the signs all over the restaurant are super annoying and tacky. Please, just stop. And after dining here, I won't return. The tables are old and dinged up. The interior is shabby. And the signage announces various limits on the all you can eat model. Well, if the sushi was fantastic, they wouldn't need to offer it in an all you can eat format. Which means, the sushi is not that great. It's only OK. The Wegmans supermarket nearby, frankly, has better sushi. For about the same price. But wait, I thought this place was all you can eat? Well, there's only so much sushi you can eat. When you average out the price you pay here, with the amount you could eat at Wegmans for the same price, I think Wegmans is the better deal. read more

I usually come here with a group of friends and we pig out. The sushi is great, he appetizers are hot and well-seasoned. My favorite are the vegetable dumplings, the teriyaki shrimp, and of course the eel rolls. The service is quick and the waitress takes her time to explain any questions you may have about the selection of food. I love looking at our bill at he end to see how much we demolished in a sitting. Would definitely recommend for some good sushi and appetizers. The wait staff were very attentive and eagerly received and placed each of our orders. That aside everything we did order and we try to order from a wide selection, tasted like it came from a instant packet. For example the broth in the udon was thin and nondescript. At least the noodle texture was as I would expect. The slivers of fish on the sushi were rather emaciated. The rice texture was good and well vinegared although oddly warm when served. The seaweed on the hand rolls was rubbery and had not been toasted prior to preparation. The fish and tasted like it was rushed through the thawing process and had a minimal amount of fat. These are expectations I've accrued for a sushi experience over time. And while Osaka Sushi faltered once again the price point balances my expectations. With the all you can eat you only have 75 minutes to eat, which seems like a long time but it takes them 20 minutes to come take your order and then cook it so that 75 minutes goes by fast. Then we brought our 2 year old son with us. He had a couple of spoonfuls of rice and they charged us $4 for him for all you can eat for a child. That is a little crazy seeing he ate a couple of spoonfuls of our rice. Then he had a child glass of ginger ale with no refills and they charged us $3 for that. To me that is a little crazy again.
