Last night we went to Osaka to celebrate my wife's birthday and after our meal here we were a bit dissapointed with the decline in our experience. Below were the frustrating results of our evening. 1. We made reservations for 8pm and didn't get seated until after 8:30pm. 2. Our waitress was rude and short from the beginning of our night. In the end she rushed us out very quickly. 3. We ordered sushi and when it came our chef had begun cooking. The sushi was sloppy and it fell apart. 4. Our hibachi chef was definitely not happy to be there and provided a lackluster show. He actually forgot to throw the food in our mouth and did it at the end of the meal. He didn't even cook the zucchini but flung it at us cold and raw. In the end, we have enjoyed the majority of our experiences here but the last two have been rough. I still give it three stars because it is the best hibachi restaurant in the area, but they need to get back to the basics. read more

I'm really giving Osaka 3 and a half stars for their hibachi. A couple of pluses and minuses: - waiting an incredibly long time for the hibachi chef to show up (maybe 45 minutes?) - the incredible loudness + the chef was entertaining and sort of saw that we weren't the most playful crowd so didn't try to force us too much + there was seriously a ton of food. Mushroom soup and salad then fried rice, mixed veggies, and our entree. Plus two shrimp. And it was all pretty great. -/+ pricey but I think it was pretty average for hibachi The food is great but the atmosphere is a bit too loud (although, it WAS a Friday night) and it didn't blow me away or surprise me. read more

Last night I had the worst meal and the worst service at Osaka. We all ordered Bento boxes for dinner. It was the greasiest tempura I have ever had, heavily battered and almost inedible. And the main salmon and chicken in each were cooked poorly. The service was terrible, with the wait staff just about taking our plates from us while we were eating, rushing us through dinner even though the restaurant was almost empty. New customers were arriving and we sat for at least another 30 minutes talking and visiting with one another. When we left there were about 6 new customers still in the restaurant, clearly not in need of our table. The entire experience was a big YUCK. Osaka has certainly gone downhill. We won't be returning any time soon. read more

Quality sushi. I haven't had delicious Hamachi in sometime, and this place does it well. The sushi cut is surprisingly sliced with careful consideration (with cool grooves) and is prepared well overall. The Vegetarian Yakisoba was also very delicious with a perfect balance of flavor too. Service is much to be desired of, though. On a funny, yet slightly annoyed note: our waiter/waitress (yes we had two, they couldn't decide) was too busy tickling each other, blocking my way to the bathroom. =P But in all out seriousness (and meanness) our waitress didn't know the supplement menu items as she was surprised with our order (as if nobody else got them), she ignored us when we wanted more water, and it took awhile to get our check long after we finished eating (and raising our hands). Decent sushi located in downtown Northampton. We ordered the Angel, a roll with mango, and Samurai Roll. If you're a big sashimi fan, you will love the Samurai Roll. It had salmon, tuna, yellowtail with ikura, uni, and avocado on top. The uni is fresh and definitely melts in your mouth. The service was fast and friendly. I enjoyed my lunch here. Came here with the gf while visiting her for a pre v-day dinner and was surprised to find a sushi/ habachi restaurant in some type of old Victorian looking house (I'm a city kid). But wherever the establishment, it doesn't really discourage me as long as the food is good. Hell, I think the best food I'd ever had was on the streets and I've eaten at a lot of bourgeois or "bougie" type of places. As soon as you step in, you wouldn't expect a restaurant like that in there, but for the most part everything looked nice and clean. Because I was with the gf, it was strictly sushi here for us and we were able to order variety of special maki rolls (this girl has an appetite like mine), don't remember every roll, but from what I can remember we had white tuna sashimi, a sweet potato roll, spicy tuna roll, a spider roll, shrimp tempura, and the special lover's roll (which turned out to be the best) and a few more that just don't ring a bell. The spider and tempura rolls were ehhh... definitely had better elsewhere. Everything was just okay, but the lover's roll as corny as it looks, was definitely the best thing we ordered, wrapped in soybean paper instead of seaweed, it had cucumber, avocado, spicy tuna, and shrimp tempura, ohh and of course rice (they don't do brown rice btw). Service was normal I would say, but to my waitress, if you're trying to get extra tip out of me haha don't be sneaky and try to talk to me when my gf is in the bathroom (asked me personal questions and handed me a card)! I wouldn't say that I won't come back again, but I'd order less sushi and try the habachi next time. read more

Ate dinner at Northampton, CT Osaka restaurant. Sunday free street parking else paid parking lot across the street. Several steps upstairs from street to reach entrance. Basic wood decor. Service good. Hibachi steak and salmon = below average. The sirloin steak cubes were dry well done chunks, over seasoned with soy sauce, and no hibachi smoke grill flavor at all. Hibachi salmon was fair and similar to those of smaller cafe's offered in Bento box. Beef donburi over rice = below average. Beef well done dry and veggies dry over round grain rice. Seared tuna appetizer was average. Omitake or cooked spinach was very good with the lemon/lime soy sauce. Salad lettuce was limp and the dressing tasted like thousand island with ginger flavor. I recommend going with sushi rolls and maybe raw fish instead of cooked entrees. read more

I ordered the barbecue ribs appetizer for take out, it was $8.50 for 4. They were awful! There was very little meat and lots of hard fat! Very disappointed in them to say the least! Came here on a Saturday evening with some friends, and they were packed! Reservations are definitely recommended if you try and come here on a weekend. We opted for the hibachi table and so this review is for the hibachi only. The interior of this place is deceptively expansive, it just keeps going on and on and on which is great, because it is always so busy! Inside was well maintained/clean and well decorated, no real complaints really there. Our serve greeted us quickly and took our order. She didn't seem very knowledgable about the different types of saki, but she was nice enough to offer a member of our party a sample before buying a full glass, which I thought was a nice touch. At one point she got into a verbal argument with the hibachi chef in front of everyone, and while they laughed it off afterwards, it was awkward in the moment. The habichi chef was pretty standard, typical tricks. The food itself was decent, not the best I've ever had, and far from the worst. I am used to leaving hibachi stuffed, and I was still wanting dessert afterwards, so I do think the portions are a little on the smaller side, but not enough to be immediately obvious. The vegetables were a tad overcooked, but the rest was pretty spot on. I wish they made their own sauce on the hibachi table like they do at other restaurants. The bar is pretty expansive and has a large list of cocktail options which was nice. Overall a decent experience. I'd probably return to try their non-hibachi options in the future, but definitely would come not on a weekend or at the very least with a reservation. read more

We used to love this place and would go here all the time I'm not sure what happened. The service and show used to be exceptional but we went for my daughter's 11th birthday with her friend who had never been to a hibachi restaurant. The cook didn't do any of the fun things not the onion choo-choo train, not the zucchini food toss where you catch it in your mouth, or the baby sake. He cooked and looked so bored with his hands on his hips as the food was cooking served it and walked away with his tip I might add just because I am a good tipper. I wrote the place off but one day we were downtown with few options and my daughter pleaded that we gave them another shot. The same exact thing happened. I'm not sure if this is because we are vegan we are minorities or what the case is but the bottom line is that we did not get the service that other people in the restaurant were getting. I do not recommend taking a chance and getting the same service we did. This place is absolutely disgusting. The salads they give you are touched with bare hands and handled by the dirtiest of hands you can possibly imagine. The management is completely in chaos, it is an all-male hierarchy where the men take on the leadership roles and the women are the hostesses. Very misogynist and poorly run business. Their trainees don't even get properly trained and are forced to work horrible hours without getting paid on time or get adequate tips to make a living off of. The way the dishes are cleaned is horrendous and prone to so many bacterias and viruses. If you get sick after eating from this place, just know it's cause the people who run it can't even do a decent job cleaning up their business while screaming at their employees to clean everything up in two seconds without giving them adequate training/prep or even proper cleaning supplies. I am surprised this place hasn't been shut down by the Health Department. It is absolutely atrocious!!!! read more

We went in November 2018 and it used to be our favorite hibachi. We were so disgusted with the extremely dirty bathroom and they had buckets on the floor coming out from the kitchen and into the hibachi side of the restaurant with really dirty water. The hibachi tables are so dirty and not cleaned well. Everything was dirty. We will not return. # Another NOHO restaurant bites the dust. Northampton used to be the hub for great eateries and it is not doing a good job. Can't think of one place that I love to go and dine. OMG. Terrifically crowded, LOUD. Did I say LOUD? Did you hear LOUD? Rude staff in a manic rush, throwing food on the table, forgetting to bring drinks until the very end. One half of our table had finished before the other half's food came out. I had the hibachi squid, which tasted like nothing. Asked the waitperson to take away the full plate, she came back with a takeout box, I said no, take the food away I don't like it (and of course I was charged for it). Substituted some vegetarian sushi, which was pretty good -- I'm not a vegetarian, but given the carelessness and lack of cleanliness I didn't dare try fish. The women's bathroom was unfinished and unclean, with a Dyson hand dryer that didn't dry. The lock on one of the stalls was broken. The whole place seem unkept. Very disappointed. read more

Food is average, attentive wait staff, and very accommodating to a large party that we brought in. We were lucky to have an awesome chef kept us entertained and gave us plenty of saki lol. I ordered the chicken hibachi with extra extra extra yum yum sauce. I also shared a scorpion bowl, which was fairly strong. The restaurant was clean, including the bathroom. The hostess was welcoming and helped to accommodate our large party. I'd like to say more but the food was average, nothing special for me. *Short version: Late reservations, threatened to charge us when we wanted to cancel, frat boy party. It was bad! *Long version: I'm going to break this review down into 4 levels: Evil, Pathetic, OK and Good. PATHETIC: Taking our reservations for *14* people 3 weeks before our meal and demanding a credit card to do so. Reservation was for 8PM and at 8PM we were missing 3 people (in the same car and who called us to tell us they were stuck in traffic). They ended up being less than 15 mins. late. Please understand that what they had reserved was (2) 6-person tables -to which they added an extra chair on one side. So, at 8PM, with 11 of us present, they could have seated both of the 2 tables. EVIL: After assuring us that we would be seated as soon as our late guests arrived, they made us wait an additional 30 minutes before we politely told them we understood they were busy and they could give our table to another party (there were many others outside and inside waiting for tables). "Sure" -BUT THEY WOULD CHARGE THE CREDIT CARD $5 / PERSON (YES=$70!). EVIL: So, just before 9PM, they tell us our tables are ready. we wade through the crowd inside and find out that one of our tables still has a family at it. Grrr. At first we blamed the family; BUT NO: they hadn't even been served desert yet!!!! WE HAD TO STAND IN THE DINNING ROOM ***AT THEIR TABLE*** WHILE THEY WERE SERVED AND THEN HAD TO WAIT FOR THEM TO GET THEIR BILL AND PAY IT. I know: by now you think I'm lying, don't you? Nope: this is true. Meh. Bastards. I HATE this place. Meanwhile, the poor wait staff had to maneuver around the *7 of us standing between/around tables*. I felt sorry for them. They were screaming college 'fight-songs' (football). This was one of the first times I've been in a restaurant and nobody anywhere joined in for the happy birthday song. There was a deep aura of loathing coming from several families out to enjoy a meal together (...enjoy a meal with their families, not the frat boys). PATHETIC: Our meal is finally ending around 10:30-10:45. They brought the bill without even asking our table if we wanted desert. One of my favorites... until today. Went there for lunch today with a friend and ordered a three roll combo: tuna, yellowtail and spicy red snapper. My friend ordered the teriaki chicken box lunch. The soup and salad were not very good and I ate less than 1/2 my sushi. It just didn't taste "good". I'm pretty glad I didn't eat all of it! About 2-3 hours later I suffered about 90 minutes of extreme nausea. My friend didn't have the same reaction, but did say she felt kinda "crappy". I felt so terrible that it will be a long time before I go back there, and probably quite some time before I even eat sushi again. read more

I had heard very positive things about Osaka, unfortunately very little was accurate. I have two regrets - one that I wasted 2 hours and 45 minutes of my life, the other that I can't give a fraction of a star. I honestly can't think of anything positive about this experience other than the people I was with. We had a reservation for 8 PM May 11th for 14 people. Three of us were 12 minutes late. We called ahead, but Osaka would not seat the rest of the party, despite the fact that we needed two tables regardless of whether or not we arrived. When we got there at 8:12, we were told we'd be seated momentarily. After 45 minutes, we thought we'd leave, but were informed my sister-in-laws credit card would be charged $70 ($5 per head). I was appalled. At 9:14, we were told we would be seated. When we went in, 7 people in our party were seated. The remaining 7 were told to please stand by the table. A second table was right next to ours, and still had a party of five eating. After approximately 10 minutes, that second table got their desert, and we were seated at 9:37. During this time, my brother had asked for menus, so we could order quickly. That didn't work out either - our orders were not taken for 15 minutes. After they were taken, it took two visits to get the drink orders correctly delivered, which were really needed at that point. My brother's dinner order came after about 20 minutes. Only my brother. After another 15 minutes our appetizers arrived. 10 minutes later, two other dinners arrived, and they kept insisting the hibachi dinners would arrive "momentarily". If momentarily means another 15 minutes... they were accurate. Meanwhile, my Shrimp, Asparagus, Onion with special Osaka sauce still had not arrived. It came 10 minutes later - FIFTY minutes after my brother received his dinner. Not only that, but it was Shrimp, Asparagus, Red Peppers and Mushrooms, not onions. Understand I despise mushrooms, but I certainly was not about to send it back and wait again for my dinner. Everyone had to sit around and wait for me to eat, which was quite annoying as we had some young children and older folks as well. Some of them apologized and left because they were just too tired to wait. Additionally, there was an extremely loud and obnoxious group of people at the hibachi area who were singing and yelling, and annoying all the other diners. I heard people from two other tables complain to the wait staff (in addition to us), and nothing was done. They stated they would never be back again. We wanted desert, but they came and presented the bill to us. When my sister-in-law asked why they brought the bill without asking if we wanted desert, they told us they'd be happy for us to order desert. I offered to buy everyone ice cream across the street instead. I had offered to leave the tip, I should have left nothing, but I just couldn't do it. The ice cream at the other shop was the best part of dinner. PS - other things are inaccurate as well. Not handicapped friendly (unless you will carry them up the stairs), and a few other things are inaccurate as well. I will update that, not sure how it will be reflected however read more

Putting aside the fact that the take-out guy got my order wrong, so I had to wait an additional 25 minutes after getting there to pick it up (it was a busy Saturday night, so he gets a break), the food itself at Osaka was TERR.I.BLE. We got two of the same order: Udon with veggie tempura. One of the orders, for some reason, came with a mushroom broth, rather than a miso soup, that was inedible. So, I moved onto the Udon and tempura. But man, the Udon soup had absolutely no taste, I'm serious. Like, after we both put soy sauce, and salt, and paprika, and any other spice we could find, it STILL had no flavor at all. To top it all off, the tempura was greeeeeeeeasy. I couldn't finish it either. SO. Huge disappointment and both my husband and I felt sick afterwards. Not to be dramatic, but that was $30 down the toilet. Literally. read more

Loud. Crowded. We had reservations and the place had at least 20-30 people waiting in line to get a seat. I think they must have been there for the hibachi. Note, small, cramped, dining room with absolutely NO walls separating the hibachi area. So LOUD. Came here because someone claimed it was the best sushi in NoHa. I would say it was mediocre at best. I could have spent less money at my neighborhood sushi bar and gotten excellent 5-star sushi. Service was okay. Terse, pissed off servers was more like it. Not attentive and definitely will not be back. As we were trying to walk out, kept getting bumped into by the service staff. To the point I wanted to push back and yell at them to stop bumping into us in what was obviously no care for customers. I've only recently been introduced to the Osaka experience thanks to a visit with a group of friends this weekend. Admittedly, Japanese cuisine is not something I crave with any regularity, but after two weeks of listening to said friends seductively whisper the word "hibachi" and shout things like "mo' saki fo' yo' body" I was beginning to feel the hype. And when I slowly stumbled down the long staircase out of the restaurant in a Saki haze I was STILL feeling the hype. Being a large group we opted to monopolize all of the seats surrounding one of the hibachi-style stove-tops toward the back of the restaurant. There is plenty of non-hibachi seating inside and outside the restaurant for those with a taste for sushi or anyone just not interested in a show. But we were there for a show, and thanks to our chef Andy, that is exactly what we got. He came out swinging his utensils, chopping & flipping our meat, setting the scene on fire and, much to our delight, spraying saki all over the place! His performance was not only a sight to behold and a joy to participate in, but he cooked our food, including my Filet Mignon and chicken, to perfection, earning many a high-five in the process. As I said, my order included Filet Mignon and chicken, egg-infused fried rice, vegetables, soup, salad, a beverage, and lots and lots of high-flying saki courtesy of Andy. The meat, rice and vegetables were delicious, but the salad was take-it-or-leave-it due to an unidentifiable orange paste that served as dressing, and I didn't even touch the mushroom soup. I would probably recommend trading out the soup and salad for more rice as two of my tablemates did because of a previous Osaka experience where, they said, they'd been skimpy with the rice. The drink, a Huckleberry Lemonade, tasted more like booze and blue food-coloring than anything resembling berries OR lemonade. But again, there was a TON of saki. The experience really rested on Andy's performance, personality and grill acumen, as the other waitstaff were sort of douchebaggy. They didn't handle questions or special requests well at all and seemed really put off at having to talk to us. Andy on the other hand was just a beautiful human being and an awesome chef and more than made up for the lack of enthusiasm we were initially greeted with when dealing with the seaters and order-takers. All told, the interaction with the hibachi chefs is just as important to Oasaka's appeal as the quality of the food is. Sure, the place whips up some good meat and rice, but meat and rice is just meat and rice. When it's meat and rice getting flipped all over the place by a really friendly, humorous, fire-and-saki-wielding Asian gentleman is when it turns into something SPECIAL. Make it a group event and that meat and rice turns into a HAPPENING. I suppose that makes Osaka something of a "happening joint" as it were. read more

Osaka is definitely one of the two best places to get sushi in the valley. It is also the most expensive one. Their Japanese-French fusion menu (menus, at this point) is one of the best things about them and everything I've tried on it has been delicious. Their special rolls are great and their fish is pretty much always fresh. I often also forgo the sushi and get their yakiudon or rice bowls. It's really the best sushi I've had in New England and is better than a lot of other places I've been to. Since I don't live close to NoHo now I usually just come here for sushi if I want good sushi. But. There are three problems with this place. Hence only 4 stars. 1 - The hibachi table can sometimes get very loud. Like, a bunch of rednecks/frat boys who drank way too many bud lites loud. Because sometimes there is in fact of rednecks/frat boys who sit there and are loud/drunk all the time. Since the table is in the same space as the main dining area this can become a problem. 2 - The service and presentation of the food is quite inconsistent. Every time I go I see a whole new crop of waitresses and the food is presented on different kinds of dishes. The quality of the food doesn't change but the service does sometimes dip. 3 - Last night someone at my table got an entree that came to our table looking like a pair of severed testicles placed on top of a satanic sacrificial altar. I'm not kidding. The chef dressed the plate with a five-pointed star made of a reddish sauce and then placed two red dumplings in the center. It was a little disturbing. If you do go to Osaka, avoid the normal rolls. They are in fact overpriced ($3+ for a cucumber roll?!) and aren't really worth it. The specials, though, are always very good. read more

There are many reason why this place deserves a lowly 2 stars. To begin, The food was okay. Not anything spectacular, but perhaps I just made a wrong choice in ordering. However, the real reason this place deserves just 2 stars, is the sketch factor. Yes, the boss and wait staff were EXTREMELY sketchy, basically checking out any girl with a skirt or dress on.
