Usually, my south of the border cravings are sated by Border Cafe in Harvard Square. In route to Border this past week, I walked by and noticed Orinoco.... Delicious! I started with a jug on Sangria. This sangria was different, pleasingly so. It was spiced with cinnamon perhaps? According the waiter thier sangria is a secret recipe.... I proceeded to have some empanadas, a mixed grill plate, a palm heart salad, some grilled asparagus and some bacon wrapped dates (ok, I did share). Everything was exceptional! One reason I love Border Cafe is the price. While Orinoco does have some pricier entrees, the overall value was top notch and much less than we usually spend for less food at a local pub. Enjoy! read more

My friends love this place, however I was not blown away either of the two times I tried it. The atmosphere is nice, as is the service. It is a good spot if you like the food, it just wasn't up my alley. read more

I had never had Venezuelan food before this, and I have to say, I was impressed. The spot is tucked away -- where the old Small Plates used to be in Harvard Square. This makes it hard to find, but also makes it feel more special once you're there. It's nice to eat in a restaurant in Harvard Square where you're not on display in the window. The food is fantastic, and the drinks are too. The staff will help you navigate the menu if, like me, you don't know your arepas from your antojitos. Easy to walk past, but definitely worth walking in. read more

Came here for lunch with a friend, and I must say, I can't wait to go back for another meal. After a pleasant walk to the Square, we came in, and were seated immediately (there was an impressive bustle in the restaurant for a Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.). We both ordered salads -- I had the Palmito, and she, the Orinoco. After a bit of a wait, we were presented with these huge plates--worth the long-ish time between ordering and receiving, and definitely worth the price! My salad had these amazing bacon-wrapped dates (crispy, caramelized delight--and the toasted nut inside was a fantastic touch), and plenty of heart-of-palms. I make note of the latter because those always remind me of vacationing in warmer climates, and I'm so glad to see them on a menu here! Service was a little slower than would have been preferred, but overall, it was warm and hospitable. Ambiance is fun--they've got these brightly-coloured chairs that added quite a bit of charm to the place. Food is great--our salads really hit the spot, and the empanadas that the table next to us ordered looked really amazing. And prices are quite reasonable. I am especially looking forward to the summer, so I can eat and lounge on their patio space outside! Overall, a definite winner in the Square, and somewhere I'd love to take a friend or a date. read more

After reading all the great things Yelpers had to say about Orinoco, I was super excited to give the place a try. I'm honestly pretty bummed that it wasn't everything I hoped for. I walked in the door at around 1:45, drenched from the holy-crap-where-did-THAT-come-from rainstorm. The host immediately tells me that they're cash only today, so I turn right around, grab some cash, and come back, freshly re-drenched and even hungrier than I was before. We were able to order quickly: tostones, a valenciana arepa, and a pepito mixto. The tostones were... adequate. They weren't greasy, but they were definitely heavy and in need of more sauce. Both the arepa and the sandwich would have been good, except for one fatal flaw: meat in both dishes was overcooked. There isn't enough guasacaca in the world to salvage chicken that bland and dry. The perfunctory service didn't make me feel any better about it. You guys, I'm way bummed about this. I really wanted to fall in love with Orinoco, but I just didn't like it. It's such a cute place with such a sexy menu! Did I just order the wrong thing? Were my expectations unrealistic? Were they just having an off day? I dunno. I don't think I'll stop by again any time soon, but if I do, I'll order something else and see if my luck is any better. read more

The food here is 5-star worthy, no question. We started with the bacon wrapped dates, stuffed with almonds. They were so f-ing good. I seriously wanted to order them again as dessert, but I refrained. We also got empanadas which were awesome. They were served with a great salad and really could have made a meal by themselves. For my entree, I had a lamb chop which was cooked perfectly--super tender with lots of flavor. On to the meh. I get that it's a small place and we're in a tough economy and peeps gots to make money. However, when you're sitting so close to the next table that you are accidentally playing footsie with somebody other than your date, it's uncomfortable. The tables were barely pulled apart at all. If I want to share my meal with strangers, I'll go to bisuteki or my cousin's dinner party or something. Awk. I'm no Tom Colicchio--I don't usually care about the "presentation" of my food. Buuuuut the dates were served with toothpicks on top of a ripped-off piece of wax paper, which kiiiiinda made me feel like I was at a super bowl party. They tasted so good, it doesn't even matter, but it was a little surprising when they arrived. Most importantly, and most responsible for the removal of 2 stars, was the service. It started out terrible and improved throughout the meal to weird. We were seated immediately--which was awesome for a Saturday night. However, we sat for over 10 minutes before anyone came over to our table--no menus, no setups, no water, no love. We had to ask several times (and several people) before we got water. The table next to us, who arrived 20 minutes after us, received their entrees before we even got our appetizers. That was weird. We were finally served our appetizers, and then our entrees about 3 minutes later. Also, the waiter made a comment about how much I ate of my entree, and then a comment about how quickly we'd eaten dessert, which was a little embarrassing. All in all, I would definitely go back, because the food was completely awesome. It's a relatively new place, so I am sure they will work out the other kinks as they become more established. read more

So filling! The food doesn't look so big on your plate(s), but my friend and I have a theory that the arepas expand in our stomachs. My first time at Orinoco, I went with a friend, and our server kindly prevented us from ordering too much. We split two arepas (pelua, reina pepida, and warning: arepas are not easy to split) and an Asado Negro. All were great, and I was especially fond of the sauce that came with the arepas. It didn't look like a tremendous amount of food when I was eating it, but it's actually quite heavy and likely to put you in a food coma. Come before 7 PM to avoid a wait! I almost always see a sizable crowd when I leave. read more

I went here with a Venezuelan guy and so I definitely had an advantage going in. He also said that there's only about three Venezuelan places in Boston and this one is the best. Food: Plantains stuffed with cheese: so good! I mean what a heavenly combo of two amazing things Bacon wrapped dates: pretty good but I've had better elsewhere. The almond in the middle kind of threw me off. Empanada trio: they're pretty basic. Just cheese. Just meat. Just beans. Still really good though and the green sauce it comes with is great (the mojo I think). Arepa Jardinera: really delicious. I love the cheese they use and I'm such a fan of plantains. Arepa Queso de Mano: also really good but just a slab of cheese in an arepa. The guy said this was pretty authentic though, usually places overload the cheese and this one gives a great proportion. Cheese was delish though Quesillo: just flan. The texture was kind of thick than normal flan which threw me and him off They also were out of a bunch of things when we got there, like the famous tequenos, and the wine that we wanted, which was a bummer. Also apparently the restaurant is super lax. Sometimes they have things, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they open when they say they do, sometimes they don't. They warn you about this on their site which is pretty funny. I also wish they had cocktails like they do in their other locations. Also, there were no hispanic customers in the restaurant which was pretty interesting. It might have just been what we got but I though although everything I got was pretty tasty, it was also pretty basic. I think I enjoyed it this time because I never had Venezuelan food before so I was super excited to try new things. But if I came back a second or third time, I don't think I would be that impressed. read more

It's right across from Wagamama's down this little alley. The inside is super cute and the server was so nice. We came here around 1pm for lunch on a weekday. Quiet and not crowded. The food was pretty bomb. I went with my friend L, and she was pretty much eating vegan.. but they were so accommodating about putting stuff on the side. We came for lunch and split - Remolacha con cabra salad (YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY. Got the goat cheese on the side. perfectly seasoned. very beautiful. Loved the beets, red onion, salad mix. - Reina Pepiada arepa: their "mojo" is pretty amazing. The chicken salad was on the side and delicious. the arepa itself was soft and yummy. not as big as the ones I've eaten in Venezuela though, just saying. - Yuca: we got it steamed.. and yeah, again. the same sauce. it's like this limey, cilantroey, thick, sauce. it's so good. We were hungry. We split it. We didn't finish the last of the salad. With tax+tip ~$12/person, which in my opinion is a meh. I get it, they're unique. But I could get a really good goat cheese beet salad from Crema too, just sayin.. or again, maybe i'm looking at Cambridge through my Berkeley glasses, where the food is good, organic, and under $10. I'm not sure yet though if this is "woo hoo as good as it gets" because i'm not exactly sure what the vibe they're going for is. It's cool though. I'd come again. read more

Obsessed with this place. I haven't been in a few years (thanks, Covid) but was delighted that it is just as lovely as I remember it. The food is incredible and authentic, the staff is lovely, and the hidden and secluded location makes it a perfect date night spot. Can't wait to come back again soon!! read more

Just came back from a dinner here with some foodie friends. It was a quaint little experience but that was about it. After 2 and a half years of living in Cambridge, I was surprised I hadn't heard about the place. For specifics - I had the ribs, with tender meat that really fell off the bone, but the sauce tasted just like American BBQ (though to be fair, I have no benchmark of what Venezuelan food should taste like). My friend's steak was overcooked, but after they redid it for him, his dish was about a 3.5 stars. My other friend had one of the sandwiches and a salad, and would give it a 4. The sangria was delicious and cinnamony, and the dessert selection was sparse (flan and chocolate souffle) but the souffle was delicious. The atmosphere is elegant and would be great for a date. The food was tasty, though didn't wow me. I may need another visit to fully assess my feelings on the place. Well, with all the fancy restaurant competition in Cambridge, I may never actively return -- but, still, I would be happy if I ever found myself here again someday. read more

I've always felt that Harvard Square boasts excellent all-American meals, but few of anything else. Orinoco is a welcome addition to the stretch of restaurants on JFK Street. I was so excited to come here but left a tad underwhelmed. We started off with a pitcher of sangria, which ended up not being a pitcher more so than a really really large cup. It also tasted funny, like old fruit was used or something. We decided to share a whole bunch of empanadas between the 3 of us girlz - the pernil (pork) and pelua (shredded beef) were delicious and so moist. But the reina pepida (chicken) and mechada (more shredded beef) were kind of dry. The quality of the food varied a lot -- if I were to come to Orinoco again, I'd try some of their other foods, since it was clear their empanadas fall on the same flavor profiles throughout. The service was a little slow -- I think our waiter was clearly overworked even though the restaurant wasn't full at all. I'd give this place another chance only because it's one of the few places in Harvard Sq that boasts a menu that doesn't include burgers and fries! read more

In a word: scrumptious. I highly recommend getting small plates/appetizers and sharing so you can enjoy all of the eclectic goodness Orinoco has to offer. DO make sure to try: -Datiles (bacon wrapped, almond-filled dates. Nuff said.) -Tequeños (guayanes cheese wrapped in crisp dough and served with chipotle ketchup. THAT KETCHUP!) -Pernil arepa (mojo marinated pork, guayanés cheese, tomato. Served with a delicious pesto-mayo type sauce, which I'm always a sucker for.) Cute little location, too. read more

Was curious to come here based on the mixed reviews on Yelp. Plus, this is one of my friends' go-to date spots. Fact: the patio here is pretty awesome -- but so is the house-like interior. In any case, we ended up here one evening, and started out with the datiles -- while they were good, they were not as life-changing as I expected given the reviews I read here. They were exactly as they might sound...bacon wrapped dates. 3 for $7? Yeah...On the other hand, the sangria was a solid choice. Cinnamonny. Sweet (seriously. Those of you without sweet teeth should get something else instead - it reminded me of Trader Joe's cinnamon pear cider but classier.) I got the costillitas -- was initally going for arepas, but I was really craving ribs and c'mon, the menu said guava bbq sauce. I can't say I tasted the guava (although they were sweeter), but they were good. Other folks got the parrilla caraqueña (aka the variety plate), the cordero traditional, and the roasted portobello arepa. The variety plate looked like the best bang for the buck at $19, but I think the cordero (lamb chops) were the consensus favorite of the table. Like other reviews have suggested, price point is a bit high for the quantity. I'll go back to try the arepas soon, and to get some of that sangria. read more

Service: 4.5 Food: 4 Ambiance: 4 Tip: come in smaller parties for easier seating in this tiny, hole in the wall place! This is a GEM in the overpriced Harvard Sqaure region. I've come to somewhat subscribe to the belief that smaller, more cozy restaurants typically have higher yelp reviews, mainly because they make the foodies feel more exclusive. Perhaps, but Orinoco is definitely not in the category. It is authentic. Or so my Venezuelan friends promise. It is quick. Always appreciated when there's a 45 minutes wait. It is attentive. Respect your customers, and they will respect you. Order the Arepas and Empanadas. They're as authentic as they get. I particularly love the Pernil and Pelus, though honestly the La Gringa is quite good as well. And the Tajadas (sweet plantains) are a must try! read more

The food here is spectacular - SPECTACULAR. The service is B-. You might wait something like 5-10 minutes after sitting down to be served by a waiter, and you may well finish your meal before the waiter returns to fill your water. Thankfully the place has such amazing food that you may well let it roll off your back, but it's a shame because this really is some of the most delicious food in Cambridge. Otherwise it would be a five-star joint. Expect a sexy, low-lit but semi-loud environment inside (not a place you come to dinner for a quiet catch-up with a friend). It's family-friendly layout inside, and there's always the seclusive patio if you want to escape Boston for a bit. read more

Orinoco - Pernil Arepa and a side of Tostones - Venezuelan Near Me - Cambridge, Massachusetts

I was really excited to try the food out with some friends on a cold winter night. I tried calling in advance for reservations. Although a rude lady answered the phone and was offended that I thought that they took reservations. She curtly asked where I heard such a thing. Needless to say there are no reservations. Nevertheless we still walked over eager to try. Only to find out from another rude hostess that there was a one hour wait. Luckily there are other great options nearby. Just don't get your hopes up too high for service at least. read more

Just finished our meal here and it was wonderful. The best one we have had on our trip and we wish we were staying in the area another night to come back and try more. Great place, but not for vegetarians. LOVE the arepa mechada. The meat is tender, the size is just right (on the small size if you eat a lot). The sauce is probably the best part, so make sure to cover it in the green stuff! The appetizers are so so. The plantains are good, but not amazing. I would probably stick to arepas only at this place. Avoid the vegetarian arepas -- unfortunately they lack flavor. A big downside is that they are understaffed, so go only if you have the time to wait. read more

I discovered Orinoco because my fiance and I decided to not consult any internet sites and find a restaurant to eat at on our date night. Actually, I've always wanted to explore the place even when it used to be the tapas place. Let's just say I was very pleased with it more because I like the ambiance and the service. Everything on the menu looked really awesome, and I was excited to try everything, however I only ordered the oysters Rodriguez (fried oysters sitting on a lump of spinach infused with Manchego cheese with a mango chutney base) and the Asado Negro, a steak in black sauce with plantains and butter rice. The oysters didn't meet my expectations, but I think I was mostly feeling meh about the battered oysters. I think they wanted to bring out my appetizer plate with my fiance's at the same time, so I didn't have it "fresh" and it wasn't as crispy as I thought it'd be. The cheesy spinach was delightful though. My steak was also pretty good, and the plantains and rice that went along with it were perrrfect. If you're a spicy kind of person, get their hot sauce - it is seriously sizzlin'! I took a nibble at my fiance's empanadas which were also pretty yummy. There are so many things to try here and I am definitely going to come back here again. Service was perfect, so I'm sorry for those that didn't have a great experience, but I wouldn't rate the business on purely customer relation if you hadn't had the chance to experience the whole thing. Recommend this place for an intimate date place. read more

Hidden alley near Harvard South American fare. Ate here as a way to try something new, but it didn't really tickle the tummy well. When the weather is nice, the best place to eat is on the open patio. Inside eating gets a little claustrophobic probably due to the inadequate lighting. Service is spotty due to the lack of waitresses. -=-Food-=- Bacon dates and plantains were probably the only things that I enjoyed here. The portion didn't exactly justify the price though, but these typical filler items were what kept me from rebelling. The French bread beef sandwich was where it failed me. I could have been courageous and ordered an arepa, but I thought I'd play it safe. Turns out it wasn't safe enough. Beef was stringy and the flavors were not memorable. I did try a bite of the Pernil Arepas, but it was just a big mess being a soggy bite. read more

I found love in a hopeless place. Orinoco and I are in a very committed relationship right now, we see each other about once a week. It's getting serious. Seriously though, I've been asked many, many times what my favorite restaurant in Cambridge is. And I have always professed my dedication to Orinoco. Honestly, don't bother with the main dishes. Go for the arepas and the appetizers. The maracuchitos are heaven on a toothpick. I love plaintain and the sweetness of the plaintain and the saltiness of the cheese brings me to umami heaven. The empanadas are also good and come with a little salad if you want to pretend to be healthy. But who cares about health? Slather your food in the hot sauce and the mojo sauce and you won't be sorry. The arepas are perfectly griddled and stuffed to the brim with whatever your heart desires, whether it be stewed beef, marinate pork or cheese. The tostones and yuca fries also are fried to a golden crisp and I just can't get enough of them. I actually just can't get enough of Orinoco period, as you can tell, we're still in that honeymoon phase. PS: Only minus is beware when a bunch of people sits down right before you because the kitchen is tiny and you will wait. Also, no cocktails and limited wine selection. That usually merits a one point deduction but Orinoco can do no wrong in my mind. read more

A nice South American restaurant highly suitable for people with gluten intolerant diet. Two families total 8 people came here for dinner on a freezing night. Emailed earlier that day to book a table and promptly received a response saying OK. Our guests were very pleased with their entrees such as pork back ribs, beans and rice, lamb chops, chicken and fish. The sides of fried root vegetable (I forgot the name) were a surprise hit with everyone. We ordered a bottle of Malbec to share and it a was reasonably drinkable red with an attractive price tag. The service was friendly but not too intrusive. Water served as soon as we sat down and also didn't wait too long for all entrees to be served. When the bill was paid, the waitress alerted us that the bill had tips already added and returned the extra amount. That was very nice of her. The only negative thing (IMHO) is the place was too dark. We were using our iPhones to illuminate our menus. read more

Great place for lunch and dinner! Arrived here for lunch with three other friends and we were quickly seated in the incredible and secluded garden hidden behind the building. The stone patio was shaded with trees and umbrellas while beautifully planted. I love Orinoco! I had a pork arepa, and it was very good. The sauce that came on the side was amazing, but I have no clue what was in it so I can't even attempt to replicate it at home. I also tried some of the tuna, which was also very good. Yes, the portion is small, but that's true at a lot of places. I like how it's a little bit out of the way and not immediately on the main street, which gives it a secluded feel. I also really enjoyed the decor, and although I had never tried Venezuelan cuisine before, I'll be heading back to try new dishes. The service was very good, and the waiter was very kind and patient when I asked about the dishes since I didn't know what most of them were. read more

I love the food here! I can't leave this place without ordering the tequenos-- they're amazing. And I can never decide between arepas and empanadas, so I usually get an order of each and I'm never disappointed! It's true what they say about the space, though-- if you come at peak hours, your romantic dinner will be shared with the strange couple next to you. I prefer coming at lunchtime or right at 5pm when possible, when things aren't so claustrophobic and you can better enjoy the ambience. read more

Great food, fast and friendly service, cheap prices - what more can you ask for? Hmm, maybe more space. It was also a little too loud and dark. Bacon wrapped dates - perfectly crisp bacon plus a sweet center; delicious. Verde empanadas - came with 2 empanadas stuffed with mushrooms and a salad. Meh, could have skipped. Pernil arepa - perfect corn tortilla filled with shredded pork, guayanés cheese, and tomato. Yum. Reina Pepiada arepa - shredded chicken salad, avocado, and tomato. Tasted just like a chicken salad, but with a tasty corn tortilla. read more

Hands down best arepas in Boston/Cambridge. First time had it was last Sept and the Pernil was delicious. Had the opportunity to come back again - had the dominico. Just as great. 5 star for consistency and taste. Also has cute patio on the outside with plenty of seating that's quiet and not street facing. Get those bacon wrapped dates. Promise you that even those people who are on diet will break from said diets and take them all. read more

Five star food, four star service. So why a three star review? Because the patio -- the apparently five star patio -- is infested with rats. Not an isolated little critter or two that you spot out of the corner of your eye. I'm talking roving gangs of vermin, wearing leather jackets, smoking, and singing do-wop in the corners. In fairness, I don't think this reflects on the sanitary conditions of the restaurant itself. Instead, the patio surrounded by other buildings that don't appear to secure their dumpsters. So it's a rat buffet over the fence, and rats naturally will spill on to the patio. Such a bummer, because on a summer evening the patio could really be special. If only it were human-only. read more

Came here for dinner with my parents, who were visiting from out of town, and was singly disappointed, and then doubly so b/c I was hoping to impress them w/ Cambridge's food options and failed. As the Woody Allen joke goes - the food was bad, and there were such small portions! Except it's entirely true. If the food were good, they could get away with the tiny helpings at large prices, but since it's not, I'd like to at least leave full, even if it's full of mediocrity. I had the grill plate and my father had a chicken dish, and all the meat tasted exactly as it would if it came out of my kitchen - fully cooked and acceptable - but not like something for which you'd pony up $20/plate. The steak was chewy, the chicken had no particular flavor, and the half a piece of chorizo was buried in a heap of guac. The yucca fries were good, and there were precisely three of them. Cheapo Peruvian chicken places have more flavor than this. According to my mother, the beet salad was fine, so there's a vote of confidence, I guess. read more

4.5 stars and 3 things: 1. Bacon wrapped dates 2. Pernil--the sauce that comes with it is addictive. 3. Sangria Enough said. Seriously. It's small and sometimes a bit slow, but you've really got to look past that and just eat the food. read more

In an unsuspecting location in Harvard square, Orinoco brings excellent flavors with kind staff to create an excellent date spot. We had the the tequeños, trio of empanadas, the palmito salad, and pabellón arepa. Everything was delicious! My highlights were the arepa, bacon wrapped dates (in the salad, though you can order separately), and the mechada style empanada. Every bite of these made my mouth explode with flavor. One critique I have is that this meal feels like one I can only have every so often, although everything is delicious, that can be a curse because we had too many high fat foods. That said, the food, atmosphere, price (very affordable), and staff all made this an excellent experience. We were very satisfied read more

Excellent little restaurant hidden away from the busy JFK street. Its quaint and cosy, taking you away from Harvard Sq. A great spot for date night. We had the Costillitas, apple cider slow steamed baby ribs, Asado Negro, slow cooked beef roast with rice and plantains, and shared a palm heart salad with bacon-wrapped dates. Can't vouch for the authenticity of the cuisine but it was excellent. The ribs were well cooked and tender, with a delicious seasoning. Best ribs I've had in a while. The Asado was great too, I loved the rice and plantain combination. Just wonderful. We loved the bacon-wrapped dates. Couldn't get enough of that salad. We ended the meal with a chocolate soufflé, made with Venezuelan chocolate, as suggested by our friendly waiter. Mindblowingly delicious. I'm definitely coming back! read more

We had most of the appetizer-type dishes, of which the standout was the bacon wrapped dates (soooo good). The others were all pretty good -- the most memorable were the plantains, which were very nice if that's your kind of thing, and the ... Venezuelan version of mozzarella sticks. The arepa was kind of meh though; the best part of it was the hot sauce. I think it was a little bland, though the meat was very tender. The sangria was amazing! Service was friendly, but it's pretty annoying that they don't take reservations and you have to have your entire party before you can be seated. read more

Delicious food and excellent service! After finally discovering the little pathway that leads to Orinoco, me and my friend were seated quickly to our surprise that there was no current wait time. We were starving and the menu and surrounding food looked so good it was hard to narrow it down. We chose to each order an arepa as a starter to quell our hunger. They came super quick and were juicy and flavorful. We ordered the Mahi mahi and pabellon criollo for our entrees and split a mini order of the short ribs since they looked good at a nearby table. Prices were great for the large portions provided and everything was exceptionally flavored. Excited to come back and continue making our way through the menu. read more
