We started off trying their soup dumpling dim sum - it was tasty with a nice broth and filling, enough so that I'd like to return and try their other dim sum offerings. We followed with some pork fried rice (which was somewhat bland, using browned pork meat strips instead of roast pork); salt and pepper squid (also on the bland side - needed more seasoning and the pieces were too big, making them rather chewy); and their cumin chicken (which was the best of the main dishes, having a nice heat level and flavors). So all in all, imo there's enough promise here to warrant another visit and try more dishes to see if I can elevate it to 4 stars. Service was excellent, prompt and polite. read more

I was out running holiday errands and decided to order a lunch special from Oriental Flavor. I chose sesame chicken with brown rice and hot and sour soup. I also added on a dim sum combo. I used the online ordering option and received notification of when it would be ready. Unfortunately when I arrived at the stated time the food wasn't ready. I had to wait ten or so minutes. It was nicely packaged and I settled down in my car ready for a nice lunch. To my dismay no napkins, or utensils were provided. I'm pretty handy but trying to eat rice and chicken chunks without a fork or spoon is going to end up a huge mess. Thank goodness for Whole Foods. Disposable utensils and napkins available right inside the door. The food was alright. Rice was nice and hot and the portions were pretty good. We had carryout, which was very difficult to pick up due to the lack of parking - had to walk two blocks in the rain to retrieve my food. Food was wholly unremarkable, unmemorable, and overpriced. I'm guessing that their target customer is the captive student body, who have no other choice within walking distance of the Common. Ambience was fine (casual, service was crazy attentive and food came fast (again it was early). But the food!... We had the best steamed BBQ pork buns I've had in the US (only Hong Kong was better), and all of the appetizers and entrees were 4 or 5 stars. This is perhaps the most legitimate Chinese dim sum/yum cha that we have found east of NYC. Came from Los Angeles where the San Gabriel Valley sets the benchmark for legitimate Chinese food, and this place could easily relocate there. Usually go on the weekends as it's an hour drive from our home in Connecticut, but worth the effort. The weekend dim sum is excellent, everything prepared fresh and by very friendly staff. Going off the brunch menu, their other dishes are also terrifically amazing. Try the fried chicken cubes (special chicken) or cumin lamb for a nice hit of spice. Their fish is also very tasty as well. Can't speak to the more common dishes like kung pao; if you go to a restaurant, it should be to order items you can't easily make at home. I see some people had bad experiences with the wait or takeout, but we haven't had that issue ourselves. read more

Oriental Flavor is THE place for dim sum. If you are just a party of 1, try the seafood shu mai, it's amazing. If you are a party of 2 get 3 plates, seafood shu mai, crystal shrimp dumplings, and the turnip cakes. I have never had a better turnip cake anywhere else, i seriously can't find a good one in Boston. They don't need to serve it with hoisin because it's full of fantastic flavor! I've had dim sum in London, Amsterdam, NYC, the best in Flushing, Boston, San Francisco- Yank Sing, San Antonio and hundreds of more places, obviously I love and try dim sum wherever I travel, so believe me when I was so pleasantly surprised and amazed with Oriental Flavor, the ambience was really pleasant and bustling with diners, staff and take out. My fiancé and I drive about 45 minutes from Connecticut when we are craving dim sum. There's no good dim sum around the Hartford area. Either we drive here or towards Mohegan casino for dim sum. We were told they make their own dumplings here and every time we order, it taste fresh not store bought. We always order shrimp dumplings and seafood shumai. You can see the stream rising from the dumplings and the transparent wrapping is soft! Beef tripe here is good and can't complain about that. The fried shrimp balls are always yummy and chicken feet could have been cooked a bit longer to let the meat fall off the bone. I like their hot and sour soup here, it's prob one of my favorites. However today was an off day with this soup. We also ordered the seafood congee and it had no flavor (don't order it!). Overall, we will return when we want to take the drive. I come here whenever I have a craving for dim sum. I always get the century egg and pork rice porridge, shu mai, and I switch between the steamed bean curd rolls, steamed spare ribs, and tripe. I know that my friends are huge fans of the pork noodle soup, and come back just for that. For western MA, the quality is pretty good however not as good as what you could get in Chinatown or other spots near Boston. No matter what time I come the restaurant is usually populated with other patrons which just goes to show how well-liked this place is. The staff is attentive and prompt, which is nice and results in pretty high turnover rates. The longest I've ever had to wait for a table was maybe 10 or 15 minutes. The serving sizes of the entrees are very generous and can be shared between two or more people. Overall, a tasty Chinese restaurant that always hits the spot! read more

Great place and always bustling with people. That shows something about this place. Have been going here since 2015 and cannot remember having a bad meal. Their beef noodle soup bowl is great and a very fulfilling and hearty dish in itself. The spicy chicken is crispy and can be had anytime both as a side and also as an entree. Their scallion pancake is delicious and always feel fresh and light. Try their lo mein or the Singapore noodles. You'll not be disappointed. Why 4 star then you ask? The prices: maybe it's an Amherst problem. The prices should still be a bit less than Boston/nyc prices. It's Amherst you think however most places over here seem to be priced more. read more

I ordered mapo tofu from the vegetarian section and a side of white rice on DoorDash. (I didn't realize that it already comes with a side of white rice, so I received two sides of white rice). Though mapo tofu traditionally has pork, I didn't realize that they also have a listing for mapo tofu with pork under their pork section, and both listings are simply "mapo tofu" (the vegetarian version is slightly cheaper). Unfortunately, I assume that DoorDash doesn't provide the restaurant with the menu section that the item was ordered from, so I received mapo tofu with pork. Luckily, DoorDash refunded me. The menu on Oriental Flavor's website doesn't have this problem, as the mapo tofu under the vegetarian section is listed as "veg. mapo tofu". If you're vegetarian or otherwise don't eat pork and order from their online menu, you should be fine, but beware if ordering from DoorDash. Putting "vegetarian" in the special notes section might work. Hopefully, Oriental Flavor changes their DoorDash listing for the veg mapo tofu in the future. Other than that, the dish was tasty, and I would recommend it if you're able to order it properly. However, I haven't had many restaurants' mapo tofu before, so I'm not sure how it compares. read more

The food here, for the price, is excellent. Me and a couple of gals stopped by during their lunch hours and we had a bangin' time! The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. One of my friends ordered their soup and we weren't sure if it was vegetarian (forgot to ask!) - fortunately it was vegetarian... and delicious! Their entrees are well portioned and not wicked oily, which is a huge plus. Another plus: Their bathrooms were really clean! The floors were clean! This whole place was clean! This is one of my favorite places to eat in town center! I would basically call it my go to place when going out to eat with friends. They recently closed down to do some renovations and reopened this past week and after going here twice already, I have nothing but good things to say about it. The place got bigger, cleaner, and the serving plates also changed. The sauteed string beans are a must get, along with the xiao long bao. I try to order something new each time I visit and so far, there hasn't been anything that has let me down. The sichuan style beef noodle soup was surprisingly very good - I would recommend sharing because it is made so heavily with spices that eating it alone would be too much to handle. My family gets dimsum from Oriental flavor at least once a month. It's a complete hit, even with young kids. The staff are very friendly and have always been helpful, even with special requests. If it weren't for my sister who attended Amherst College, I would have never found the best Chinese (Americanized) restaurant in the entirety of my Chinese Restaurant journey. Oriental Flavor is a small venue that packs some powerful punches in flavor with their food. The service is that of a typical Chinese restaurant, and the venue is pretty clean. Due to the establishment's size, expect a wait before being seated. The pickled cabbage and pork noodle soup is to die for. The cabbage offers an intense sharpness to contrast the suppleness and softness of the shredded pork. In combination with the broth and chewy noodles, this dish may look unappetizing but it will certainly blow you away with its flavors. The chicken dishes (sesame chicken, kung pao, etc) are well prepared, fried to perfection, and the sauce has a great intensity to it. The eggplant with garlic sauce is another dish that impressed me greatly. The eggplant is so soft it literally dissolves in your mouth, and the garlic sauce coats the palate in an insatiable umami. The rice is fragrant and the complementary jasmine tea is a great addition. The desserts are also well made - the steamed egg tarts are crispy, flaky, and the egg curd in the middle is creamy. The sesame balls are fried to perfection, and the red-bean paste interior has a great nuttiness and silkiness to it. Oriental Flavor boasts sophisticated food at a great price point. For my fellow foodie hunters who have felt they have not yet experienced a great Chinese-American meal, take the time to visit this small restaurant. read more

The dim sum here is unparalleled! The soup dumplings in particular hold a special place in my heart and are absolute show stoppers- somehow they get better each time. My two other favorites would have to be the pork buns and the sesame balls. The sesame balls are fresh out of the frier and absolutely delectable! They also keep as leftovers really well :) My go to main dishes are the mapo tofu, Singapore rice noodles, dry braised chicken, and Kung pao chicken. They are not quite as good as the apps (it would be hard for them to be), but they scratch the itch. I've come to Oriental Flavor multiple times throughout my years at college and I've still continued to come here when I visit my friends. The problem is I wouldn't choose to come here because their food is only average and I'm forced to here by my stomach because it is craving dimsum or my needy girlfriend's stomach is craving dimsum. During our last visit, we ordered a shredded pork with dry bean curd which is a pretty good dish. We also got a salt and pepper squid dish which was lacking a bit of flavor in my opinion.
