The rolls are very good here with about 20 different ones to chose from. Even the hand rolls are good, with very little rice and mostly fish. All of it was fresh. This was the families second trip and the kids think it's their new favorite but they say that about their last sushi meal if it is good haha! My wife had the beef subiyaki and last time I had the seafood version. It's a good dish, and of ample size in a cast iron pot. These can be too salty sometimes, but these were right on. It's the best Sushi Restaurant at UConn! Oh... right... it's the only Sushi Restaurant at UConn. But considering the fact that this is a zero-competition business in Rural Connecticut, they do a pretty bang up job here. I especially like the decor, which is dark, inviting, and fun. A good place for a college date, or even a real adult date. The sushi is good, but perhaps expectedly, not the finest I've ever had. Nothing that'll make you sick though - fresh and professionally prepared through and through. They have a nice lunch special that gets you some sushi or tempura for a low price. This was my second experience at Oriental Cafe. My partner was a little confused by the building because there's not a main floor and an upstairs - you walk in and immediately go up or down. You're on a landing half way between. Once you go in, it's a quaint little place. Tons of sushi options. We ordered the pupu platter - two shrimp, chicken wings, boneless spare ribs, crab rangoons, chicken fingers, steak on a stick. All was delicious. Shrimp were large and breaded. Boneless spare ribs were a bit citrus or maybe cherry flavored - but still yummy. Sushi rolls were yummy too. We did the pink lady, the spicy lady, and something else I don't remember. My partner hates seaweed rolls so he was relieved that soy wraps were an option. One of the rolls we ordered was a seaweed wrap and he asked for soy roll. They still did the seaweed roll and charged us for the soy roll. But they were all delicious. Overall, excellent experience. I love sushi and I eat a lot of it. This place is ok. Storrs has a limited selection of places to eat. If I need my quick sushi fix I usually get take out. There is another place in Mansfield Center, Asian Bistro, which also has sushi. However, if I am in the lab on campus, Oriental is faster, but the sushi at both places is about equal (Bistro has hibachi though which is fantastic and great lunch specials). The sushi is ok. The special rolls are not as creative and diverse as the ones they have at Sakura in Evergreen Walk (which I have also written a review for). I used to love the lunch special, however, it has gone downhill since they opened (yes...I've been in Storrs that long). They used to give you a ton of food, especially in the Bento boxes. My boyfriend's favorite lunch special dish is Chirashi Don, however, they have been giving less and less sushi in the special. I do understand with the economy, however, Chang's garden (a Chinese place just down the street) has still been able to maintain their fabulous lunch special standard over the years. You do not leave that place hungry, but I've had to go back to work and eat a granola bar because I was still a little hungry after going to Oriental for lunch. I do still order take out here, but out of convenience. Because I have had better sushi elsewhere and also because I know they were better not too long ago I give them a two. Best sushi on campus, that's for sure. However, it doesn't measure up to real higher-end sushi restaurants you might find in a larger or more upscale town/area. The fish is fresh, though. The dumplings (I tried them off the chinese and japanese menus, so normal dumplings as well as the pork gyoza) are ok; i'd say a 6/10. But the portion was larger than I expected (you just always assume you're gonna get 6 dumplings right, then BAM, they gave me like 11). What's cool is they have few options for nigiri platters of 8 pieces exclusive to one kind of fish.. and, they'll substitute. Although yellowtail and tuna are the ones available in this way on the menu, I keep going back for all-Salmon, and they charge no substitution fee! read more

As the only sushi restaurant around (considering there isn't competition), oriental is a place that offers decent Japanese food. The staff, owner and the waiters are very friendly. I go to this restaurant on a regular basis and I happen to like this place the more I visit. I usually go there for lunch I like the lunch menu very much, decent amount of variety with reasonable pricing. The dinner is nice as well, just slightly over priced. It is true Oriental has horrible service. Bear in mind, this is a low budget Chinese/Japanese fusion restaurant in a college town. If you come in expecting good service you are missing the point. Beggars can't be choosers when wanting to fulfill a sushi craving in the middle of nowhere. Even so, Oriental Cafe is just "okay." The good: Service is very fast, the portions are (surprisingly filling), and, while oftentimes crowded, quaint restaurant can still feel intimate. The not-so-good: The prices are decent ($7-10 for lunch), but the food doesn't really meet the standards of the price you pay. I ordered the 3-selection sushi plate, each with a (supposedly) different fish in it. For two of my three selections, I couldn't taste the fish at all, and it was disappointing. I have had sushi before, so I don't think my expectations are unfair. In the end, Oriental Cafe isn't a bad place at all. Then again, it's nothing that will blow your socks off either. read more

I come here when I crave for udon noodles or sushi. I'm a big fan of their seafood yaki udon. The staffs are friendly most of the time (not always the case with the newly hired one though). Now I usually order take out from them. They did messed up my order couple time though. One time I ordered Alaska Roll and Salmon skin roll from them for lunch but they gave me 2 orders of salmon skin rolls instead.... I called them and the answer they gave me was Alaska Roll "is" Salmon skin roll..... And not to mention, on the menu they're listed as two separated items. When ordering appetizers ask what size the portion is. I ordered miso eggplant to go and when I got home I was dismayed. It consisted of two thin slices of eggplant with miso sauce...the price was $6.25. Yikes! I could of purchase tow to three whole eggplants at the grocery store for that price. Yes, it's the only place to get decent sushi in Storrs, CT. They have the typical selection but also many specials. They also offer Chinese dishes but I don't care much for those as it is very Americanized and you can get better options at another place. What stands out for me is there regular/dinner menu which goes beyond sushi. They offer Yaki Udon, Nabemono (wonderful broth soups with noodles, meat and veggies) and Katsus. My favorite is the Yose Nabe (seafood, chicken, bean curd, noodles and veggies in broth), especially on rainy day and chilly day. It comes in a big cast iron bowl/pot and fills your soul with yummy goodness. Its not spicy, similar to Miso. Its huge so you have plenty of leftovers. So when i have craving for big bowl of soup while at work, this is one of spot that fulfills my cravings. My family really loves this place and we've been going here for years. The food is delicious and always fresh. The plating is beautiful, and the waitstaff is attentive. The 2 and 3 sushi roll lunch option is very reasonable. On my son's birthday they brought an amazing complementary sundae. I would highly recommend this place. I recently went to the new sushi place, Haru Aki, here in Storrs, but I still prefer the Oriental Cafe by a landslide. There is much better selection, there is more seating, and way more selection--you can also get a selection of Chinese dishes. You also get more bang for your buck at the Oriental Cafe. This was the only place near UConn to get sushi (now there's also the Asian Bistro), so as a result they are generally pretty busy. They do chinese food too, but I've never tried it. The sushi is pretty good, although the variety of rolls are limited to the standards only. Their seaweed salad is great. Bring a date and try the love boat. They switch to take out only about 30 minutes before closing, so get there before that if you actually want a table. read more

I am going to rate Oriental Garden a three mainly because of the service. If I were to base this review on the food alone, I would give it 4 to 4.5 stars. We ordered chicken teriyaki, udon noodle soup with chicken, Shrimp spring roll, shumai and tonkatsu. Everything was delicious and freshly made the shrimp roll was crisp, not greasy, and tasty fresh inside. I don't understand the huge plate I was served to present one shrimp roll. The tonkatsu was crisp, hot, not greasy but a bit dry and tasteless. The sauce served with it picked it up a bit, but the dish could have benefitted from a side of veggies, instead it was served only with steamed white rice. The shumai was awesome, but again why present six small shumai in such a large plate. I also could have used a little more dipping sauce. Now for the main reason for why I did not give it higher marks. It was a very busy Saturday evening and the kitchen was clearly in the weeds. First one of our party was served the udon soup. Ten minutes later the 1 shrimp Roll came. Still one of our party had not been served. Then the shumai came and one of our party was waiting for her entree. Finally it came, minus the miso soup that was ordered. The tonkatsu still had not arrived, I had to ask then it was another 5 minutes minus the sauce which took another 2 minutes. I don't blame the wait staff, but there is a serious problem expediting in the kitchen. A table should not be served piecemeal so that the people at the table stare at each other, while some people have food in front of them and others do not. Plus there was no apology for the wait and it seemed to me that the staff did not think anything was wrong with this. It is a shame that there is such great food in an establishment suffers from such poor service. Seriously improve the management in the kitchen. read more
