I was not sure if the LES (and most of NYC) still had old school lingerie shops as it's been (still being) gentrified and over-developed, but thanks to Yelp, I found Orchard Corset. It was time to take my young lady for a proper fitting, and everything went extremely well. Orchard Corset is an all business, no frivolity shop. It may be off-putting to some because there are no displays and all the decorum, as per Victoria's Secret. Nevertheless, the options are great and vast, along with an experienced expert on hand to assist you with bra, corset, etc. sizing. Everything was quick and efficient, which was great since I was dealing with a generally impatient teenager. The woman that assisted us was knowledgeable and pleasant. Excellent and efficient bra fitting (+ sale!) . I wear a not super-common size and she immediately knew what to give me to properly fit. I've tried that size before but no luck -- the way this particular bra fits works perfectly though. Will have to come back eventually for more (or if my weight changes and I need a new fit!). When you walk into the establishment, you'll see wall to wall boxes- as a reviewer mentioned before, I immediately thought of Olivander's wand shop in Harry Potter. Just boxes and boxes of things. There is a man that works the register and behind a curtain is a bra genius. This is the "Olivander" every one is speaking of. She assessed my needs. I needed a strapless bra/corset for my wedding dress. She looked at me and in seconds guessed my size and pulled a corset that was a little larger but fit like a glove. They are a fountain of information the quality of the construction is amazing that said the pattern they use for men is Cleary made for a man wanting to have a female shape not a men's tailored v esthetic the circumference on the top bells out to an average of 4" on each side and that's fine for females who have brest tissue but not for men who want to use it directly at work . The bottom goes down way to long I have a long torso 20.5" compared to the national average of 15" and it starting at my lower pectoral line the corset goes down so low that I can not sit without the flared out bottom edge trying to cut of my genitals. This is your bra mecca. Here's the long version: I first learned of this place 10 years ago through a story in New York Magazine. Since I'm an intrepid tourist in my own city, I added it to my list of places to go the next time I was on the Lower East Side. I walked in on a cold, blustery day, wearing a banker's wool coat over a sweater and blouse. Ralph, the proprieter, looked at me, I told him I was shopping for bras. He sized me. Right there. Did I mention the coat over the sweater over the blouse? Yeah. He sized me, turned around, pulled down two boxes, handed them to his mother, Magda (who has since retired), and waved me to the back of the store. This unique experience deserves a narrative review: My friend and I walk in and are greeted by a Large Hasidic Man (henceforth known as LHM) who looks at us and says, "Yes?" Me: Umm, we're here for bra fittings? LHM: "Elllllllllsiiiiiiieeeeee!" (I could be getting the name wrong) We wait a few minutes and admire the Olivander-esque shelves full of small flat boxes until a Tiny Hasidic Woman (THW) emerges from behind a curtain. She points at me and says, "You, come." Me: Hi! How are you today? THW: What are you looking for? Me: Just an everyday type bra. THW: Take off. I strip off my top-things. She checks out my goods for a half a second then pokes either side of my back with two fingers. Within 30 seconds she has me strapped into The Perfect Bra. THW: Your left is bigger. Everyone has a big one. Me: That's coo.... THW: The good surgeons make one bigger to look more natural. Me: That's smart... THW: They grow like tomatoes on the same vine, independently. You want two of these? Me: Umm sure, one beige one black? As I get dressed she pulls out this laundry bag-thingy and hands it to me. THW: I'll tell you how to wash these. This is VERY IMPORTANT. Bras should never be bent. You put them in here and put them in the wash, you never dry. Good to know. She hands my two bras and the laundry contraption to the LHM and he rings me up. She did not tell me that the laundry thing was $9 and didn't ask if I wanted it, just rang it up. This is fine with me. I would never question the bra lady. THW fitted my friend, LHM rung her up, we were in and out of there within 15 minutes. My bras were very standard, everyday, workhorse type bras. Practical but not matronly: $36/each. I understand that they have pretty lacy ones for $50/each. They accept credit cards. This was the easiest, breeziest bra shopping experience ever! AKA The Hasidic Bra Store. Not because the bras are Hasidic, but because the owner and his mother are. The patriarch opened the store in the 30s, and it remains a throwback to old skool New York. When you walk into the store, Ralph or Magda will tell you your size by sight, without using a tape measure. If it's cold out, they'll ask you to open your coat. The size they tell you will probably not be the size you're wearing. When my friend Patricia disagreed with Magda's assessment, she said, "That's why you droop. You want to droop?" Since Ralph is Orthodox, he will not touch the customers. The fitting is done by his wife, his mother, or their one employee. The "dressing room" is essentially a sheet hung from a pole. Don't expect Magda to be gentle -- she knows how a bra is supposed to fit. "That's not where the nipples go!" she told my friend, exasperated, shoving her breast in correctly. And she's right. The bra fits perfectly, you have complete support, and the nipples are in the right place. Another friend complained that the strap on the back of her bra was too tight. The response? "That's not the bra's fault." But with sizes up to H and I, odds are good they'll have your size. So I figured that when it came to finding the perfect undergarment for my bridesmaids' dress, the old school crew on Orchard Street would definitely know what's up. I was right. I walk into Orchard Corset Center on my lunchbreak and see the walls lined with shelves full of tiny boxes, all covered with hand-written numbers. I also see a large Orthodox Jewish man behind the counter. That was a bit unexpected but I divulged my issue and he listened and forwarded me onto his female assistant. He said, "Go behind the curtain and she'll measure you." So that's what happened. She told me to take my shirt off. She stood in front of me and watched. She then "measured" me by cupping my breast in one hand and gently touching my rib cage with the other. No tape or numbers were involved. She then went in the back and came to me with a backless corset that with detachable straps. It fit perfectly and I was excited. She adjusted my bust in the corset and the whole process took about 7 minutes. Done and done. What a productive lunchbreak!! I went in the other day hoping to try on a corset to see if I would really enjoy wearing one or if I would find it too painful or awkward to do on a semi to weekly basis. It was a man at the front and when I told him what my intensions were, his demeanor changed from "oh a customer" into "this girl is definitely not going to be buying anything so I shouldn't even waste my time helping her properly". I get it; I'm new to corsets and I needed time to think before committing to a corset lifestyle but I wasn't expecting to feel shamed for wanting to learn more about corsets. He acted like a gatekeeper to the corset world and didn't seem to even want to show me one until the woman in the back told him to just show me a corset. Even then, he seemed reluctant to help me. I just left after asking a question and receiving a short, uninformative response. He also refused to let me try on a corset unless I was committed to buying one. I'm a complete novice; I'm not going to commit to something if I end up not enjoying it as much as I thought I would. I've thought about getting a corset for a very long time and going to a specialty store was my first step into getting a more informed opinion on corsets rather than reading the generic question and answers on the internet. The interaction was so off putting and it made me feel like a complete idiot for wanting to try a corset. Unless you have had experience with corsets, I would NOT recommend this place. I wish I didn't need a corset, but not all of us are shaped like Jessica Rabbit, and this is where Orchard Corset comes in to provide some much needed assistance. They are a tiny warehouse stocked to the brim with corsets, bras, lingeries of all shapes and sizes. The saleswoman knew exactly where everything was, and picked one for me after 5 minutes of interaction. Not a lot of privacy, with a customer before and immediately after my fitting. A corset can run around $75-$100, but I've had my black underbust one for a couple years now. I don't wear it unless for special occasions, so the wear and tear isn't heavy. It can be uncomfortable after a few hours though, with the stiff inner linings digging into some spots that you just can't control. Slouching is impossible and you'll find yourself sitting pin straight with one of them on. But I guess that's the end goal, Rose in Titantic-style. read more

This used to be my go-to bra place for many years. I do think that the woman who works here fits you perfectly and is very honest about what fits well and what doesn't. They will not sell you something that does not fit you. However, after coming in and not having anything in my size, I was told to call back before coming. I've called multiple times over about a 6 month period and they said that they do not have 32C/34B in stock and to try again. The last time two times I called, I was told that they do not have anything and recently sold it to their "celebrity clients." I understand that their "celebrity clients" are important but I am a long time customer of many years. This used to be a 5/5, now a 2/5. 2 stars for the wonderful fittings in the past. As a black woman, I just want to say I did not feel discriminated against, and that this was one of the most unique, and productive shopping experiences I have ever had. I did not have a rushed experience. While Peggy was able to quickly assess my size and needs based on my dress, she worked with me until we were both satisfied. She wouldn't let me leave until I had the perfect corset. I tried on a total of four corsets. They all worked to some extent, but she didn't give up until we found the one that delivered the best wow factor for my shape, and looked the best overall under my dress. A piece of advice, do not alter your dress or item before paying the store a visit. Because of Peggy's expert fitting skills, I ended up not having to alter the dress, saving me $100 and additional hassle. Finally, for those who have commented on any social discomfort they may have experienced based on the cultural and religious backgrounds of the owners, or the layout/design of the store, I only see both factors as assets. The owners were clear, to the point, honest and precise -- virtues of the Orthodox culture. As a New Yorker, I appreciate substance and quality over delivery. Toughen up a little. These people know what they are doing; the business has been operating since the early 1900s. I also appreciate how unfancy the store is. No glamour, no fluff and no b.s. Peggy absolutely lives up to her title as bra whisperer. This is a no frills small shop that will find you a bra that feels like it was made for you. I usually wear *really* pricey bras ($140+) and for half that price or less, I got bras that fit equally well, gave me a wonderful shape and came in a bunch of colors. I also managed to get a longline strapless that keeps my girls in place. Seriously, visiting this shop will be a part or my annual NYC ritual from now on. When I was planning my first trip to NYC 3 1/2 years ago, I reached out to a friend who had lived there for 20 years for recommendations for cool experiences that weren't the typical Times Square/Empire State Building/Rockefeller Center ice rink "touristy" types of things. She told me, "for an authentic Lower East Side experience, go for a bra fitting at Orchard Corset." Well, this was just too intriguing and I HAD to go! My experience was similar to many other reviews. I did not really know what to expect, but I just decided to go with it. I went in, and it was TINY, with shelves lining the walls, from floor to ceiling. The Orthodox man, Ralph, greeted me and asked what he could help me with. I said I would like to have a bra fitting. He advised me that there were two ladies currently being fitted, but that it should not be very long before I could be seen. He was right. I may have waited 2 or 3 minutes before his wife, Peggy, greeted me and ushered me into the fitting room area. She asked me what type of bra I was looking for. I told her, just an everyday bra. She had me remove my shirt, she looked at me, sized me up, and said she would be right back. The bra she brought me fit me PERFECTLY. I have a large bust and she said that she wanted to fit me with a bra that would hold the girls in on the sides and push them inward. She had me put my top back on and PRESTO! I was FLOORED at how much better my top fit and I swear I looked 20 lbs lighter!!! I bought two bras on the spot and was out of there in 10 minutes! My second trip to NYC was 9 months later. I went back to Orchard to get fitted with a bra again because I wanted a bra that plunged a little lower in the front to go with some lower necklines I have. It was a similar experience, but this time, Peggy was there by herself. To my surprise, she actually remembered me from my last visit and remembered that I was from Georgia! I told her what I was looking for and, of course, the very first bra she brought out was PERFECT. I bought three of them that day, and called back a week later to have her send me two more. I've been wearing those five bras, every single day, for 3 years, and they are still in great shape. Most of the time, an underwire will pop out after a couple of years' wear in my bras, but not these. In fact, these bras have held up so well that I did not need to buy any more when I was in NYC again this past February. I am planning my fourth trip to NYC for January. I've lost a significant amount of weight and need to be refitted.
