I myself needed a new crown so I scheduled myself, too. First, I got a basic exam and teeth cleaning by Kelly. She was easy going and professional, and that part went (relatively) painless. I had gone to another place a few years back that practically butchered my mouth and made it hard to eat for a few days, so it was nice having someone who knew what she was doing. Afterwards, Dr. Tanaka took a look at my tooth with the missing crown and made a few recommendations, explaining both to me and the assistant/resident/student (I mean no disrespect, just not sure) what he wanted to do and why. I felt absolutely confident that I was getting the best possible care. I have a follow-up appointment myself, and though I never look forward to dentist appointments, I look forward to having my teeth taken care of. Unfortunately, as it does happen, my last molar was a root canal & the crown broke off. The person who did it for me years ago wasn't in the field anymore (or didn't want to take responsibility, consider it a bullet dodged) so Dr. Hanna had me seen by Dr. Farzin. Together he came up with a treatment plan for me which included extracting the tooth. Now, that was an ordeal for me because I'm a Nervous Natalie, but he is efficient & thorough in how he works. Yes, extractions aren't exactly fun, but it was not a long or drawn out procedure & I healed well. Fast forward to a few weeks ago where it was time to put in the post for my new tooth. This included a special scan so that he can study & create a method that is precise & quick. I was really impressed at how quickly the procedure was, & yes, although I worried, it was really for nothing. While we wait for healing & for the actual new tooth to be installed, I am currently healing well & will return for a routine x-ray to check on how it's settling in. I really think that Dr. Farzin deserves a special place here within my reviews. For anyone who is nervous with dental things, you're really in good hands at this office with the entire staff.

They told me everything looked good and that nothing additional was needed. However, they only performed a polish and did not actually do the cleaning. When I asked why, the staff told me it wasn't needed. At my next appointment, things took a drastic turn. They suddenly claimed I had gum disease and needed a deep cleaning, even though I was already scheduled for a routine cleaning. When I asked why the previous visit didn't include a cleaning--something that should have been standard--the staff casually told me they were probably "too busy." I returned on or around 6/25/26 for the deep cleaning and was quoted over $500. When I asked for clarification, they simply said, "That's what your insurance covers." I work for the County and have solid insurance, so this didn't make sense. Instead of discussing my concerns or explaining the charges, they pushed the service through with no real transparency, leaving me little choice but to proceed. Three months later during open enrollment, I reviewed my dental benefits and found that deep cleanings under my plan should have cost me only $60. The inflated bill came from an additional antibiotics charge of roughly $450--something they never explained or disclosed beforehand. As someone who works in healthcare, I found this fee outrageous and completely unjustifiable. To make matters worse, when my insurance company asked me to submit supporting documents for a grievance, I emailed the office twice and received no response. This lack of professionalism only confirmed how poorly this office is run. I used to respect this dental office, but based on their recent behavior--lack of transparency, overcharging, and dismissive communication--I would strongly recommend avoiding Gentle Dental in Orange. Learn from my mistake: always question the charges, confirm what your insurance actually covers, and don't assume this office will be upfront with you.
