Anyone who knows coffee and lives within a 50 mile radius of Trager Brothers in Afton (also a…read morelocation in Lovingston) has literally zero reason for not making this roaster and coffee shop a regular pilgrimage site. To paraphrase the Beatles, there's nothing I can say that can't be said, but man do I love, love, love this place. Excellent whole bean offerings, roasted to perfection by expert roasters. Delicious hot and iced coffee and espresso drinks that simply can't be replicated anywhere nearby--including, sadly, in my home town of Staunton (hey, Trager Brothers! There's a huge opportunity for expansion in the Queen City!). And top all that off with sublime, informed, and incredibly friendly front of house staff. Yeah, it's a little hard to find, but anything worth having is worth looking for. And in this age of googling and Apple mapping and whatnot, there's no excuse for not availing yourself to the BEST coffee in central Virginia. Y'all who might have read some of my other reviews will know: I usually have a minor nit to pick with even my five stars. Not so with the Brothers Trager, fam. Enter their shop and be greeted by the heavenly aroma of roasting coffee, the whir of a burr grinder, the quiet scream of a steaming wand, the genuine smile and friendly greeting of the barista. Now, you tell me: how could you possibly find a quibble worth the scribble?

If you're looking for a big ole store or facility that screams coffee shop, you're looking wrong. It's in in the far end of a building off to your right when you follow the signs. (seriously the signs are key here). When you enter the main building, you're hit with the awesome aroma of coffee... just head to the end and walk in the door. It's a cool shop that Is totally worth visiting. If anything, it's b/c of the high quality coffee they offer. There really isn't much to do here other than pickup great coffee but I guess I can't think of what else you'd really need. :) Cheers! Food Taste: great coffee! Overall Service: 5 Value of service to cost: 5 Facility: 4 Ambiance: Very small but quaint Repeat customer: yes Dog Friendly: no

They roast single origin coffees onsite and sell them in completely biodegradable pods, which only stay on their shelves for up to 30 days so the coffee always tastes super fresh. They are not like other biodegradable pods you may see for sale elsewhere, these actually ensure you get a fantastic cup of coffee each time. I started talking to the baristas, Lisa and Anastasia, and shared that I used to work for Starbucks and was amazed how the same coffee could taste completely different if it was prepared differently. Lisa promptly took out two bags of coffee and prepared a pour over of each. They were the same beans, but roasted at different temperatures. She gave tastes to me and another customer. It was amazing how different the coffees tasted, and they even had different colors. It was such a cool experience! I bought a box of Columbia medium roast pods, which I've been enjoying every day this week. They have several coffees available to try, along with pastries and made to order sandwiches. It's located in an industrial area, off the main road, but is well worth the trip if you're looking for some delicious coffee. It's become my go to coffee roaster in the Richmond area.

Different coffee shops make macchiatos differently. some use mostly steamed milk while others use mostly foam. Instead of explaining how their version is made, the employee responded with, "What do you mean? It's a macchiato," which came across as dismissive and unhelpful. There was also confusion with my order because I was never asked whether it was for here or to go. Part of the order was prepared in a to-go cup while another part was prepared for dine in. When I politely asked if everything could be put into a to-go cup, the employee replied, "Can't you just chug it?" and appeared visibly annoyed by the request. What concerned me most was how the drink was handled afterward. The employee took the cup, held the lid in the area where customers place their mouths, carried it to the back, and returned with the coffee transferred into the cup. Watching someone repeatedly handle the drinking surface with bare hands was not something I expected from a food service establishment. Mistakes happen, but the combination of dismissive responses, poor communication, an unprofessional attitude, and questionable drink handling practices left a negative impression. I hope management addresses these issues, as customer service and basic hygiene should be priorities at any coffee shop.
