My husband and I were in Charlottesville a few weeks ago on vacation and stopped in here for a coffee + a treat before going on a walk at a nearby park with the dogs. I ended up getting each of the dogs one of their cinnamon sugar donuts (they were on vacation, too!) and they were so moist and decadent. Perfect late-morning treat that all 4 of us loved. I also especially loved being able to get a 24oz latte! It lasted me our whole walk on the nature trail at Penn Park. The staff were SO friendly, had a lot of regulars coming and going while I was there, and had signs up all over about being a safe space for all, which was beautiful. They have a cute, outdoor patio area in the front that I would love to come back and lounge at if we are ever in town again. read more

What a coffee connoisseurs heaven! This petite coffee shop and bakery is a local favorite and I'm happy to say, I felt all the love! Be sure to park in their designated lot behind them. You are instantly greeted as you walk in and smell the coffee and pastries aroma! They have Apple Pay and all the fixings for your coffee the way you like it. You can tell they all love to work for this local gem and it is rated in the coffee and pastries. They know almost everyone's name who walks in the door. How sweet!! I was able to snag their last bacon, egg and cheese biscuit which was so good! Forgot to get a pic of it since I ate it so fast. An iced latte was $7 which was a bit pricey for what is was. The baked goods looked and smelled incredible. The staff were are all very friendly and chatty. Edit: The owner seems to think that a lecture on what comprises a latte is a response to having made two of the worst lattes I've had in Charlottesville. A bad latte is, you guessed it, a bad latte. You know where you never get a bad latte in town? Mudhouse and Grit. If you're reading this, head to either of those spots for a better experience. -- Might have been the specific barista, but the latte was very bad. My wife's latte was also awful. The proportions were off. Went back in to try the espresso from a different barista. Not bad. Basic second-wave coffee fare. Much better than the first round of drinks. I could see the appeal if you're nearby, but if you're looking for a solid espresso-based drink, there are better, more dialed-in spots. read more

Cozy local coffee place off of Fontane and the end of JPA. It's a small coffee bar with seating along the counter and a petite outdoor patio. There is a small parking lot in the front so on busy days, drive around back to find a space. So far, I've tried the iced mocha and really liked the thick mocha flavor mixed with the espresso. It blends nicely when the ice begins to melt so it isn't too strong of either flavor. The pastry selection is something I appreciate because from time to time they'll offer amazing croissants stuffed with ham and Gruyere, or spinach and feta. Delicious. read more

I'm a big fan of Atlas. It's been nice to see a coffee shop with a neighborhood feel and a clientele of regulars grow up in Fry's Spring. They offer warm service and excellent coffee, and the pastries are also delicious. The bacon-egg-caramelized-onion tart and the ham-and-cheese croissant are both winners. Not a ton of seating, but I've never had trouble finding a spot at the bar. If it were open past 2 p.m., it'd be nearly perfect. read more

Perfect stop off the interstate. I parked next door behind the deli. It's surprisingly hard to find good coffee in an efficient manner driving through Charlottesville off I-64. No longer. Quick route right off the exit. Atlas will be my new go to in the area. If you are looking to stop off 64 and get right back on this your best option by far. I promise I've tried them all. Small shop but lots of outdoor seating. Real good coffee. Plenty of options. Tried a couple breakfast tacos that were yummy...small but inexpensive. Perfect snack. Plenty of homemade pastry type stuff if that's your thing. Very welcoming staff. Knew the customers before and after me. Very clean. Random dive-type location which is cool. Stopped in during my visit to VA after it was recommended by a friend. They have good coffee, reasonable prices and has some nice outdoor seating. Apparently their iced coffees are brewed at 150% concentration to make up for the melting ice, so don't be afraid of a watered down iced latte! I definitely recommend. read more

I ADORE this coffee shop and the fabulous people who run it. I stop here at least a few times a week. It is truly a neighborhood spot and most of the clientele are regulars who know the staff and each other. The baked goodies are always divine (try the cheese scones, paleo bites, cranberry bread...oh, heck, try ANYTHING -it's ALL delicious). Parking is located behind the building. FANTASTIC! Atlas is such a treat - a gem that really shouldn't stay hidden, except to keep away swarms of customers (considering it really is such a small hole in the wall). Great quality coffee, best housemade syrups hands down (if you're a latte drinker, this place is heaven), and drop-dead delicious baked goods. I cannot stress enough the quality of their baked goods. Less of a selection as mudhouse, but they boy do they have some standouts. Try the chocolate chunk cookie or else, and also the quiches, seasonal breakfast breads, and muffins. Really can't go wrong. The staff is always so kind, and although I didn't know them personally, there wasn't a single time that at least one person walked in who was clearly a regular - greeted by name, asked about any nuance in their typical order, and engaged in light conversation about their days and schedules.
