Don't get excited- Ophilia's is still closed. But it was my duty to write a review, and maybe hope someone will let us know if they have travelled to a new location.
Ophelia's is one of the most visually rich locations I have ever been to. Wandering in you feel like you've been transported to some place halfway between Casablanca and Blade Runner. It is easily Ashley Sutton's wildest and most sensual creation. I felt transported every time I walked in.
This is a true cocktail bar. The cocktails were visually and tastefully rich and well executed. They were not cheap, but I don't want a cheap cocktail. Way before the negroni-craze hit the world, Ophelia's had a "negroni-only" menu. At some time or another I had about half of them. All were amazing.
If you want a table at Ophelia's, you would have to make a reservation. It was simply packed every time I was there. The music was tasteful; one day I was lucky enough to come in when they were hosting an original DJ from "Studio 54". There was another DJ who was having her birthday that day. There was much love between the crowd and the DJs, and lots of dancing despite limited room.
I would also label Ophelia's as the only place I don't mind being interrupted. Normally an interruption consists of a music change, and elborately cladded dancers storming into the main area to perform a beautiful dance interspersed with "in character" performances. Think a combination of Burlesque and disco.
The actors often wandered through the bar, remaining in character and just pushing the vibe "over the top". Usually two wonderful ladies on the back of the bar - maybe with feather fans and elaborate costumes. All in character.
I wouldn't disagree there was a new york vibe at the front to keep the riff raff out. You can tell by the riff raff reviews here lol. No. I would not disgrace this incredible creation by coming in wearing shorts and flip-flops. If it were me, I would rush out and buy whatever clothing I needed to "kill it" when I came back.
This was my happy place. After the closure during the pandemic, I got very sad. My travels no longer take me through Hong Kong, but it was always nice to know that it would "be there" if ever I wandered through again.
To everyone who made Ophelia's the heaven on earth it was, I thank you. read more
