My Mom and I were on a roadtrip through UT, WY and SD and we stayed at the Sheridan INN. We made reservations for the Open Range and I am glad we did because it did get pretty crowded. We had Ethan as our server and he was AMAZING. Attentive when necessary and never hovered or made us feel uncomfortable. He was happy to make suggestions and we were wise to listen. We recently had our third experience at open range. The first experience was amazing. The second experience was very good, but this one, not so much. It started out with a quick greet and seat, but then we languished at the table as our server did not know that we were hers. We started with cocktails, I would definitely upgrade the bourbon in the 1893. Then we ordered the shrimp ceviche, which was almost impossible to eat, and it had goat cheese, instead of queso fresco on it, which was interesting. We then ordered the ribeye, it was very good. the Kan Kan chop, which was overcooked. Along with a side of the mac & cheese, which was absolutely tasteless and the bread service never arrived. A second round of 1893s- which came out completely different than the first ones and for dessert the berry cream cake which was cold and dry. One other thing I would like to recommend would be to train your servers to leave off the word "guys" when speaking to a table of mixed genders, for example instead of saying, "how are you guys tonight" maybe just "how are you tonight" or "would you guys like anything else" to, "would you care for anything else? Very simple and more classy. We definitely aren't giving up on the Open Range, but it'll be a while before we return. read more

What a fantastic experience I and my parents had here on our tour around the states! The waitresses were all absolutely fantastic and attentive, and we had some good conversation with both the girl who sat us and our waitress! Food wise they were also very very outstanding! I ordered the nachos (plain, with no meat) as this was one of the only veggie options available - so be warned if you are vegetarian and prefer a bigger option. My parents both had chicken fried chicken, and loved it! Portion sizes were gigantic, but not too large, and we all left feeling very happy. This Restaurant is located in the Historic Sheridan Inn which is a wonderful building built and managed by Buffalo Bill Cody in 1893. Over most of my life the Inn has repeatedly fallen into financial difficulty and then, seemingly at the last moment, been rescued yet again. Each rescue has brought a fresh infusion of capital (much of it donated by the local public) and the Inn has slowly been renovated to modern building safety codes. It is a lovely landmark and is now restored to its former glory and open for business. While I am no way affiliated with the current business, I am very pleased about this because my Grandfather was born in one of its bedrooms in 1900. It is worth a visit just to see the place. The Open Range Bar and Grill is located in what formerly served as the saloon for the original inn. It exudes high-end old west charm and elegance with the highlight being the wonderful old back bar and lots of heavy dark woodwork. I am not sure if the back bar it is original to the Inn but it has been there at least since I was a child and the place would not be complete without it. The saloon long bar is still open for bar business and when I was there a gentleman who looked much like the original Bill Cody was sitting at one end and several people seemed to be enjoying a liquid dinner (or perhaps appetizer?). The bar is among other things offering a selection of draft craft beers from Sheridan's local brewers. Good stuff! I was very pleased to see the menu. It stays true to time honored but increasingly rare Wyoming Steakhouse tradition offering a nice mix of steaks, shrimp, salmon, chicken and pork. Simple American food that was mostly either grilled or fried and served with a choice of 2 sides from a nice selection. There were several entrees in the $10 to $15 range and then you could spend substantially more for some of the high-end steaks including the mammoth 32 oz bone-in Rib-eye that literally hangs off the plate. They also had a selection of sandwiches and hamburgers but I admit that I did not pay much attention to this part of the menu. I just took note that I might want to each lunch there someday or maybe focus on that part of the menu for a more casual dinner. Our party of four began the meal with two shared appetizers of seared tuna (order them "blue rare") and fried rocky mountain oysters. We enjoyed both and the tuna was especially good and perfectly cooked. The servings were ample to share. For main courses my wife and I had the prime rib which was generous and perfectly prepared. The other couple ordered fried shrimp and 1/2 roast chicken. Both of them were pleased with their meals. We did not order dessert but we saw somebody eating some sort of awesome looking brownie concoction served in a cast iron skillet large enough to feed at least 4 and topped with ice cream. I badly wanted one but was already overly full. Oh ... and the service was great: prompt, attentive, helpful but not over-bearing. The check including beers and 20% tip and tax for 4 people was right at $150 which was less than I expected to spend for a meal of this quality in such a nice restaurant. By focusing on the more casual parts of the menu it would have been possible to have had a nice meal in this restaurant for a lot less. If you want to eat a great meal in a great western atmosphere, the Open Range Bar and Grill is your place! They are doing Wyoming proud! read more

You would travel 10000 miles in Texas to find Brisket as good or better than here. For the least populated state that is someting. The sides were rare selections, I had the roasted asparagus and sautéed mushrooms also quite exceptional. My wife had the Turkey Sandwich and they were quit helpfull to make it Gluten free. When we arrived there was no one there, which isn't a surprise because we go to dinner right at 5. However, our meal still took over 2 hours. From ordering our food to actually getting it on the table took over 1 hour. We even had tables around us, who arrived much later, getting their food first. Eventually, someone brought out the food. Portion size was all over the board. My brisket was just a couple pieces of meat and a few pieces of asparagus. The reason why I gave two stars was because the brisket was juicy and tender. So I hate saying negative things about a business but this place needs to get it together. We walked over from downtown and come to find almost empty place. They seat us right away and got us drinks very quickly. Time goes by and still haven't gotten our food. People that sat after us got there food before us. Took an hour and 20 minutes to get our soups and sandwiches... Unreal. As far as the food goes it was not bad. Burger I would skip and just get a sandwich. Four and a half. This is the restaurant in the historic Sheridan Inn. I wouldn't normally eat in a hotel restaurant but we were tired. We ordered a the chicken fried steak and the double cut pork chop. The chicken fried steak was was excellent and the gravy was flavorful, ordering this anywhere but Texas is risky, but they nailed it. The pork chop was even better, thick flavorful and perfectly cooked. The ambiance is the old west, the bar was a gift to Buffalo Bill Cody from queen Victoria. Traveling as a bus tour we called ahead, 2 weeks in fact, and reconfirmed the day before and were told everything was set and they could handle the group. 1 hour and 20 mins after ordering none of the group had any of the food. I am sure the food is good, but service was completely lacking. And the servers kept serving the locals before completing our group. I grew up in the midwest...not some big city wanna be. I was ashamed to have chosen this restaurant for part of our group. The other 18 guest went to WY Rib and Chop and everyone had their meals completed before anyone at Open Range got served a meal. The only disappointment was that my dinner was to include a croissant (they looked yummy) and a very uninspiring dinner roll was on my plate as a consolation for the kitchen running out of croissants. We had a miserable experience at this formerly reputable restaurant. We got there a half hour before closing and it still took them twenty minutes to serve water or attempt to take a drink or food order. I had a very mediocre prime rib, my wife had an inedible ribeye and our friend had an undercooked and tough (!) filet. The hapless waiter hardly seemed to care, explaining that the lukewarm soup was a function of the pretty much shut down kitchen. He made an effort to zap it in the microwave himself. Mashed potato sides were as bland as the entrees. In her wisdom the manager reduced our bill by a whole $10 as we had chomped our way partway through the ribeye. The steakhouse across the street had a half hour wait which sent us here. We love our annual trips to Sheridan for the Wyoming Theatre Festival, but the Open Range will be hardpressed to keeps its doors open for 12 months given the quality of the not-inexpensive food and the cavalier attitude of their staff. read more
