Call Dick Tracy or even Nancy Drew, because it's a complete mystery why I haven't written a review for Open Baladin on Yelp yet. It's my absolute favorite bar in Rome. If you are a lover of craft beer, this is heaven for you. Open Baladin pours a huge selection of Italian (and non-Italian) artisan drafts at 5€ per glass. For the sake of comparison, know that a pint of a crappier beer at many of the nearby pubs costs 6€ or more. It was also one of the best burgers I've ever had. The bun was perfect, a result of Open Baladin's ties to breadmaster Gabriele Bonci of PIzzarium fame. I had the Capri Burger, served with mozzarella, basil and a nice spread. Delicious. But I return once again to the beer. From IPAs to things that they can't categorize, you can get it here. With the addition of free wireless Internet, it's no wonder why I adore this spot so much. Open Baladin's layout is all'Americana: huge spaces, grand interior deisgns, chalkboards galore, and BEER + BURGERS. At €5, I don't mind ordering 3 craft beers with buddies. That's pretty good for phucking phenomenal drinks. The back of the main room is the bar, characteristic of its rows of draft handles and the massive, decoratively lit wall displaying bottles on bottles of good good beer. Groups of smokers crowd outside either taking a break or waiting to get in. I waited for 40 minutes my first time and the inconvenience melted away in my bubbly Old Antonia. There are several rooms at Open Baladin: the entrance gives way to the main dining/drinking area with chairs at the bar, many tables seating 4, and several long "communal" tables that seat 8. Past the kitchen on the left, is a cute area with orange lighting and smaller tables (I've heard they seat couples here). Upstairs, there's a large private room that is open for others when it's not booked. The setting, beer, and the fresh-fried potato chips with homemade ketchup (€5) makes Open Baladin my favorite beer joint. The ketchup is not too sweet and keeps the integrity of what it used to be: a friggin tomato! Not smooth or runny, it has a luscious pulpy texture. You can get classic chips with sea salt, or go all the way with pecorino and garlic, which I highly recommend! The burgers are good but not worth the price. A standard burger is €8, which has a juicy beef patty, tomato, lettuce, and unfortunately bready buns. The Capri burger is my favorite; delicious with mozzarella di bufala, tomato, and basil mayo (yum at €12). When I come here, I order a few of their craft beer and some rounds of hot chips. I was such a fan of Baladin that I made a reservation for 18 people to celebrate my Birthday. Naturally, I asked for a private room upstairs, but was denied. I wasn't able to reserve 2 tables (which seat 8 each). Lo and behold, the day comes by and there aren't enough space/seats. Still like the place and highly recommend it to any Italian who's missing the spectacular experience of beer & burgers, or to Americans who miss the motherland and crave their native delicacies. When one simply cannot fathom taking another bite of pizza or pasta, Open Baladin is there. When one needs a potato chip fix with mysteriously delicious ketchup, Open Baladin is there. When one needs a strawberry beer, because she doesn't care for Peroni, Ope.... You get it. I had the singing in the rain burger. It hit the spot with its caramelized onions and Swiss cheese. The paprika chips were the perfect complement, and I left more than happy. If you spend more than five days in Rome, check this place out. You won't miss the carbonara. read more

Quick review.. there's seems to be about 34 beers on tap. All of the IPAs are exceptional, from the NEIPA to the double IPA. Prices are about 5 euros per pour, slightly cheaper than the US for high alcohol craft beer. If you enjoy good beer come here, best I have seen in Italy. After eating pasta, pizza or sandwich for days, my husband and I wanted something different and lucky enough stumbled upon this joint. We were so happy that there was a table open and that Bonci (Pizzarium) makes the buns. We knew we were in for a treat. We ordered our burgers and their cacio e pepe chips and were happy the rest of the evening. The chips are homemade and we're covered in of course, cheese and pepper, taking after the pasta dish. This place is great! So many beer choices and friendly staff to help you make your selection. I didn't get to try the food, but I heard that's good, too. Also, make sure you check out the bottom floor... you follow the signs to the bathroom and keep going, and all of a sudden you're in a tiny room with a small bar. I guess this is a novelty concept for Italy. It was cool, I guess but I felt as though I didn't belong. Not hipster enough for this place. But that is not the reason 3 stars are given. The beer was nice and fresh. Very good. The food? Not so much. Sorry Italy, you cannot do burgers. Don't try. Both my husband's burger and the sandwich I got were extremely dry. this place is great. i had heard lots about it through various blogs, and since i love beer, i had to try it. it was right around the corner from roscioli, where we were having dinner, so it was perfect for a pre-dinner drink. i love the wall of beer behind the bar. it's all lit up and beautiful. we each ordered a saison and then the homemade potato chips. we were told the ones sprinkled w/ licorice was delicious, and even though we were skeptical, they were really tasty. the chips came warm w/ a side of what tasted like homemade ketchup. we were there early, but all the tables were already reserved for later in the evening, so i'm assuming reservations are recommended. if you can't get one, at least go get a beer before dinner. read more

I think we were almost 2 weeks into our trip to Italy (My in-laws, wife, and me) and we were so tired of Italian food. Hey Italians, the world is a big place, be adventurous! Every restaurant... Italian food. Nothing else. I even asked our B&B owner, "Do you ever eat anything else?" And he replied "Why would we?". But we needed a change... So then my wife said, let me look to Yelp!. "Burgers and craft beer" she yelled! Let's do it. Now we understand that we were in Italy, so a burger was going to be more like a meatloaf patty. We get it. We go to Europe almost every summer and we have never found a "real" burger. And we were right, but it was still good... and a nice change... I mean even the bun was a treat. This was my favourite place in Rome, it's in a really cool area called Trastevere where you can get lost walking in and out of bars, restaurants and cafes. We didn't eat here as much as I begged my boyfriend that we should but we had already booked a table at a different restaurant that was very tasty! Anyhoos..for some really yummy beers from extremely knowledgeable staff ,this is the best place for it. The plan was to not eat any burgers in Rome, but in the week we have been here in unison with the high reviews we decided to visit. Baladin has their own microbrews which are decent. The food really sets them apart. We started off with some fresh chips with garlic and parmesan which tasted fresh and has a pleasant uncrisp texture. For burgers we split a beef and falafel burger. A medium ordered burger shows up closer to rare, but that's ok with me. The burgers hade an excellent balance of flavors and textures and they were possibly the best I've ever had. I know burgers in Rome isn't what people imagine when they vacation, but imagine being able to tell you friends that you had a burger with bufala mozzarella cheese on it! Open Baladin is great--we had licorice chips and garlic and pecorino chips. Personally, I don't like licorice, but my friends who do think the chips are fantastic--they are a tad sweet, which threw me off. The garlic and pecorino chips were fantastic. Not too greasy, but well seasoned. We each tried different burgers--I had the one with bufala mozzarella. The burger was very well cooked and savory. The cheese was so light and tasty that to eat a normal cheeseburger makes me very sad. The beer selection at Open Baladin is excellent--they give you descriptions for the type of beer so that you can choose one that suits your palette. I had a fruitier beer that complemented my burger perfectly--can't do a burger right without a nice, cold beer. Definitely worth a try once you're sick of pizza and pasta! read more

In this summer of scorching hot Roma, I discovered the white-hot coolness of Open Baladin. Italian craft beer has been making inroads into the scene for a while now. Great to know that now there are places specifically dedicated to it. This place is beyond cool. Exposed brick, stainless steel, psychedelic colors, and an oasis to escape the unbearable heat. The variety of beers on offer is dazzling. Hard to repeat here, just see it for yourself. They do have burgers, but I've read enough advice to stay away. So I did. Instead, I pigged out on the house made potato chips. Nothing compares to ice cold beer and freshly fried potato chips. The different flavors you can get it in are fun, and the house made ketchup is also excellent. Why 4 stars? Is this Brooklyn? Wicker Park? Trastevere? No, it is right off Campo de'Fiore, which is what makes this place so surreal. Italian craft beer is the new black. read more

The burgers are phenomenal! I know, it's not your first thought when it comes to Italian cuisine BUT it's damn good. I was craving a burger and fries and this place delivered. We had four different types of burgers at our table so naturally everybody got a little bit of everything and they were all super flavorful. If you're feeling like you want the classic burger and fries pairing they do have a healthy portion of potato wedges with BBQ sauce but that's definitely something you'll want to share. A hidden gem in Rome and a perfect place to hangout, chat, and enjoy a few beers. Open Baladin was my favorite bar in Rome while I lived there and holds a special place in my heart. It has an expansive interior space, starting at the main bar/beer hall and extending into lounge type back rooms in the basement and 2nd floor with couches and comfy chairs. Besides beer, there are a few snacks (I personally recommend the homemade chips with paprika!) This place is amazing. I found it after reading about it in "Italy: Beer Country". The original is up north, but this place holds its own. Fantastic beer selection. Their house beers were great. All different styles. My sister doesn't drink and had their house cola. It was amazing. We were full so we didn't eat a whole meal, but the chips we got were perfectly cooked, lightly dusted with parmesan cheese and had a homemade ketchup/tomato sauce. If you are an American looking for anything other than Italian food I would NOT recommend this place. -Buffalo wings have no buffalo sauce on them...they were flavorless fried wings, after eating 2 we stopped the waitress and asked if we have the buffalo wings because there were also fried wings on the menu, she said they were buffalo which had us at a loss for words. -Burgers had no flavor whatsoever, the bun was good and that was about it. Service was pretty bad and minimal, our waitresses walked by us saw we were done and then went on a smoke break We gave it 2 stars for the beer list and overall ambiance, which is beautiful. In every city I've visited during my European holiday I make it a point to visit craft breweries, this place ranks high. Their selection of beers is vast and tasteful. I was only able to make through six selections before I hazily remembered I had to walk back to my hotel. Their beers range from IPAs, Sours, Weizen, and Belgian Ales to name just a few. Open Baldin also has a full menu with an assortment of burgers and more local fare. I'm so very excited to go back home and brag about this place I found in Rome. First things first: No, it's not in Trastevere. Not sure why people are confused about that. Trastevere is across the river. Open Baladin is on a small, quiet street right in the "centro storico," the historic center of the city, roughly between Campo di Fiori and Il Vittoriano. Now then, if you are fed up with Italian food in Rome (it happens), Open Baladin is a fantastic option for lunch or dinner. The burgers are genuinely good (and burgers can be creepy/horrible in Italy). The service is friendly and they all seem to speak English. The beer list is suitably massive and interesting. The sodas are funky, tasty, and interesting. If you're British, be aware that the "chips" are fresh-fried crisps. They're very nice. As others have said, their medium is quite rare ... go for a little more "ben cotto" if you don't want your burger to moo back at you. Kid-friendly (at least for lunch) and celiac friendly. Good atmosphere, very good food, plenty of interesting beer (or cider) and it's not pasta or pizza. Va bene. read more

If you're a beer fan, Italy is one of the worst places in the world to find great beer. At most places you get one of three choices, all clear as horse piss and none with any merit. Open Baladin offers a large selection and they certainly are giving the microbrewery craze a shot. I went for the IPA, twice, but it fell short. It distinctly lacked the bitter hops I crave in a good IPA. Chianti's have more IBU's and more alcohol per volume. As for the food, what great brewpub doesn't offer chicken wings? Of course, I had to try them. Crusted in a batter similar to a cornmeal, they were crunchy, but had no spice, this despite ordering them spicy. The fried the chicken sandwich had the identical breading--after the bird took a severe pounding to flatten it. The homemade chips were fine, the catsup a break from the heavy fryer grease. Staff seemed to shy away from non-Italians, but overall they tolerated us. read more

We stopped in here during our stay in Rome. While my daughter and I have been enjoying the vineyards and wine tasting experience, my husband solely drinks beer.
