So I've been waiting to go to this place for months-literally. Watched in anticipation as construction ensued, and followed on Insta with baited breathe. I SO wanted to love this new restaurant, as I do love Red Oak, Garlic Press, and Alldredge, unfortunately that didn't happen.
When we entered, I was struck by the ambiance-it did not disappoint, totally gorgeous! I loved it, every detail, every color choice, even the size of the restaurant was fine for me. But, 4 wait staff at the front, very reluctant welcome. Yes I had reservations (didnt need them) but no "Hey welcome!" "How are you today!" Or "thanks for checking us out"! I actually felt like I was intruding on a personal moment.
We came for lunch- however, the cost, the lack of healthy (non heavy) options, and the lackluster flavor leave a lot to be desired. I order the "cauliflower steak" (glad to see something like this in Midland btw) which was literally a head of cauliflower (YEA really) that had been pan seared and served with what they called pea fronds, which looked more like a celery stalk. No side of rice, soup, piece of bread-nothing. This was $14 plus tax. Hey the pesto was great, but I was hungry an hour later.
My friend order the chicken pot pie with side salad, $15 plus tax, and that price seemed to be more in line. However, when it arrived at the table in a coffee cup, I would have described it more like chicken soup. There was NO pastry shell at all! When we asked the waitress she said it does come with a pastry shell (asked beforehand & we were assured it did) but "It wasn't ready yet". We were actually shocked, no flabbergasted, that she would say that. Who serves something before it is ready? We never said we were in a hurry so I'm not sure if she was so green she didn't want to appear like she didn't know, or if she actually didn't know and thought that answer was acceptable. She showed no misgivings with her answer and so we decided to send it back. To her credit she did remove the $15 charge and offered my friend the menu again. She got mac and cheese-which she said was good, but for lunch, not really appropriate.
I think there just need to be other options offered for people looking for a fair priced (I can handle fair when it's in line with the portion) & good lunch-unless you are happy to spend $10 for a small side salad or $36 on a heavy steak. Remember this is LUNCH in Midland, Texas.
I am hopeful things will iron out, and maybe a couple specials will be offered-like a Grilled Salmon, or Snapper. Some kind of fish for lunch...and then I'll give it another try. For now, I will be staying away. read more
