I was a regular for over 6 months going every 2 weeks faithfully for a gel manicure fill and gel pedicure at first everything was great except they asked for a credit card to be on file or they said they couldn't book me in this is fine except for the fact I know at least 10 other ladies that went there and they were never asked for this 2nd one day about 4 months into going I was looking over the screen at the computer wondering why they always seemed to block me from viewing it and they had a customer profile with my name and contact info as well as a note saying the client talks way too much and really fast pretty sure she's on drugs always make sure she has valid card on file WTF I was humiliated I'm a professional for gosh sakes I live in Chinatown and work on the DTES yes but they are also on the DTES what am I not good enough to be there and I definitely don't use drugs. Last straw was when I ended up in hospital and called morning of my appointment 20mins after getting to hospital to reschedule and they said no matter what I didn't give 24hour notice so I need to pay half my appointment fee it was an emergency I almost died and they didn't care Find somewhere that values customers they don't read more

the best gel manicure I have ever had. The nail Technician shaped my nails perfectly, cleaned up my nail beds, and the shellac application was so well done and all the way up to my cuticle. BE AWARE! Used to love this nail salon, they were pricey but I felt the service was worth it. I would always recommend family and friends to this place, as Sunny was literally the best! That was until I had a work emergency that caused me to have to cancel my appointment for the very first time. I called in advance to let them know that I wouldn't be able to make it (as I had a work emergency that caused me to have to go into the office right at the time of my appointment) and this was the first I have ever had to cancel an appointment (I haven't even been late for an appointment). I was hoping given the rare circumstances for me that I would be given a grace but I received an email to which their justification for charging me was a lie. The email said "we understand that the motive for this Late Cancellation is a work emergency and a first-time situation, but this appointment was rescheduled from Friday to this Monday, January 8th and on that occasion". Now again if this were true I would understand, but the blatant lie is what has left an extremely bad taste in my mouth. I never had an appointment on Friday, that was when I called in to see what their availability was. The girl who answered the phone said they couldn't fit me in the day of but suggested Saturday/Sunday. I let her know that it wouldn't work for my work hours (weekends just don't work) and we eventually found a time that suited me on Monday. Using a blatant lie to justify charging me 100% of the services I did not even receive is wild to me. Especially since this was the first time I've had to cancel like this. Not to mention that they actually expect me to miss work for a nail appointment. I will no longer be recommending this place nor will I be returning. I cannot support a business who would blatantly lie to justify taking someone's money like that. read more

Absolutely the worst experience I have ever had at a nail salon, will never be coming back. Came here with my sister in law to get our nails done for a special occasion, we called in advance and let them know that I would be wanting a mani/pedi with nail art (no extensions), and she would be getting a removal as well as a mani with nail art (no extensions). We booked our appointment at 5:30 and they close at 7, they said they would be able to accommodate our requests, and this worked out perfectly as we had a dinner to attend at 7:30. We both arrived on time for our appointments, the girl at the front brought me over to the pedi station as she said I would start off with this and then move to the mani later while my SIL was sitting at the mani area. No one approached me to even give me the water bath to put my feet, I sat there for about 30 minutes with absolutely no service. Then the girl at the front came over to me to tell me that they wouldn't actually be able to do mani and pedi with nail art because I had to leave at 7, and they could either do mani with nail art or mani/pedi plain. I asked her why, as we had confirmed this would be okay over the phone. She said that they needed at least 1.5 hours to do both. I then pointed out to her that I had been sitting here for 30 minutes doing absolutely nothing, and had they started when my appointment was booked there then would've been time. The front desk girl did not apologize, she was extremely rude to me, and did not even acknowledge the mistake that was made on the salon's part. I then found out later that my SIL who was just doing a mani with nail art, was told the same thing - that "there wasn't enough time". This is ridiculously considering we were there on time for our appointments and told them specifically what we wanted prior to us arriving. At the end we were given no discount for our trouble, no apology for anything that had happened, and overall a very unpleasant experience from the front desk staff. To top it off, it has been a day since my pedicure, and my toe nail has changed colour (obviously the polish they are using is not the best quality either). I absolutely would not recommend this place at all, price is way too high for extremely poor service and unorganized staff. Their abilities to do nails in alright but considering how long everything took for such a simple ask, I would recommend taking your money elsewhere with technicians that are able to follow through with what is promised. read more

Came here for the mini gel manicure. My esthetician did a great job, really happy with her work! (My nails looked great even though it was the 'mini' version.) Polish stayed on without chipping for almost 2 weeks, and for part of that I was away and in and out of pools and the ocean - so I'm happy with the staying power! Interior of the salon is really nice with lots of cute decor on the walls. You're offered tea or water when you arrive and there are candies at the cashier desk. A little pricey but I think reasonable for the upscale vibe and the central gastown location. Will definitely be coming back! read more

It was a great experience but there was some things that kinda got me to lower my score. First it was more expensive than most places, which is usually fine if they are doing doing a better job then the next salon. So i was expecting a better experience. They provide the WORST service in the history of service industry. First of all they do not care about loyal clients. For example, when my shellac cover started falling on a few days after it was done, I was charged for renewal. And it happened a couple of times. Second of all, once when I scheduled an appointment they called me back and told me that they running out of time and they can't do this on a day that we agreed - a 10 minutes before an appointment, when I was already on my way there. Then they asked of another preferable times and told me they will get back to me. However I did not confirm that I will come on any of these days. Second of all just an hour before an important event for me I have an email with the receipt for so called no show. First of all this happened before because they can't commit to provide a reliable good service, as they cancelled my appointment a 10 minutes before it, so it was stressful for me to find another service in a short period of time, second, I did not confirm that I will be there, third they didn't even bother to call me morning next day to make sure if I'm coming. When I called them to figure out what happened I've met no remorse, they just blamed me for not showing up (for an appointment I didn't confirm and that happened because of their unprofessionalism) and "this is a common practice". They made me really frustrated considering the fact that in less than a day they made me stress out twice: first when they cancelled an appointment and when they charged me $20 for their own fault. I wonder if they will pay me $20 for cancelling an appointment last minute. Anyways, only after arguing with them over the phone an actually asking what is their legal base is on, because I consider this as a theft, and confronting them about this absolutely despicable service, they told me condescendingly that they'll waive it, and again no remorse and a very disrespectful treatment since the moment they picked up the phone. I didn't leave the review then because I do believe that a few bad apples can be anywhere. But even this couldn't compare to the astonishing impudence that I've experienced today. I scheduled another manicure and pedicure session (as them being unreliable last time didn't teach me anything). 25 minutes later they disrupt my day with the call and asking me if I can talk - quite an unusual request from a salon, but I'm all ears as I'm expecting another rescheduling. Not even close! That was the most impudent and disastrous phone call a service can make. They called me to tell me that last time I was screaming and swearing at the girl that will be making a manicure which is nothing more but a slander. On top of that they added as her dad has a stroke that and pretty much told me how horrible I am. Take my money after that! I feel bad about her father and wish him well as I know personally it's a horrible thing, but as someone worked in a customer myself it's the biggest NO-NO to bring your personal problems into a customer especially if this customer express dissatisfaction about the salon's policy and unprofessional attitude and not about a particular person. Many other unpleasant things were told to me but I can't really form them into sentences as they were not making lots of sense and I was mostly standing with my jaw dropped from being shocked how unprofessional this is. The last words that I remember was something like "...if you come today please". Apparently they think that I should pass a preparation test before coming to the salon that provide a horrible service. I've been to this studio so many times and it's always been a decent communication, even when I was shocked that they were charging me for fixing the manicure they did poorly in the first place, apparently I had to also embrace and be happy and cheerful when I called them about that "no-Show" fee for an appointment they scheduled themselves. Just when I thought that customer service can't go worse I had this call. I do not recommend to go to this place ever to anyone. read more

I found Onyx on Insta and was super curious to check it out. I have been getting gel polish for about 9 months but what I didn't realize is that there is a HUGE difference between shellac and the gel polish I was getting at the Chop-shop down the road. Don't be fooled like I was; even if the salon is spotless and decorated beautifully, if they are grinding your nails down it is a chop shop. Onyx is NOTHING like the other salons I've been to. It is quaint and beautiful. The calligraphy gallery wall makes me smile everytime I'm in. Linda ( the owner) is amazing and her staff are all very talented and kind. I have had a few bespoke designs that make my heart swoon and many people have complimented me on them. They offer you tea and sparkling water when you arrive and treat you like a total queen. Because of Onyx and the CND Shellac Polish my nails are becoming healthy again!!! I HIGHLY recommend this salon!!! read more

Linda and her team are absolutely GEMS! Not only was the service friendly, and personable, but the quality of my shellac mani was top notch. The salon itself is insanely adorable and chic with plenty of fun decor to look at that helps detract from the somewhat slightly undesirable other side of the street. Linda is enthusiastic and encouraging to her staff and all of them seemed to really enjoy being there would is a huge plus. It's an easy to get to location, everyone who works there is both passionate about their craft and really easy to talk to. They have lots of different options for nail color and their nail art is on point. They like to take pics of their nail art too, so it's entirely possible that after you get your fresh nails, your fingers may show up on their Instagram, which I personally think is really cool. The technician did a poor job on my nails and cuticles and all of my nails, with the new coat of shellac, were bumpy and weren't up to my standards. The shop is extremely cute and well-maintained. The location is perfect! But I am not happy AT ALL with my nails. I've given Onyx 3 tries and all 3 sets of shellac polish nails peeled within a week and a half. The polish bubbled too! DO NOT GO HERE!!!! I Called in advance for a quote (I am on a budget) and they quoted $5-$10 for gel removal. They ended up charging me $25 "because they had to use a power tool and not soak off".. I called for a gel removal quote, NOT shellac removal. I very clearly explained that had I known the price, I would've gone elsewhere to have them removed first. (I believe on average removal is $15). On top of that, I asked for a trim (because my nails were very thin & damaged from the previous gel) and the girl only cut it the length they had grown out....... the cherry on top: the surface of my nails are bumpy & uneven! Ridiculous. The reason I was switching from gel to shellac is because it's supposed to A) be cheaper & B) look more natural, but I actually ended up paying MORE than if I was to get a fresh gel set, AND my nails look absolutely horrible. From my first interaction to finish! Onyx aesthetics knows what they are doing. I wanted to get some nail art done with my sister for the first time. All the staff is very friendly and attentive. The place just has a good vibe and its tucked away in gastown. Linda did my sister's nails and you can tell she's a perfectionist and quality and safety is important to her. A client came in with a broken nail and the customer was happy with it just being glued down. Linda refused and told her no and said she needs to have to properly looked at. I have been going to Onyx for a number of years now. The salon itself is really nice and clean. I have never had an issue until recently. Since I started going to Onyx I haven't gone anywhere else and I have referred so many of my friends and co-workers. I agree with the reviewers that have said they do not value their clients. I recently had a shellac manicure at Onyx, my nails started lifting and peeling within the first week. When I returned from my trip, I tried calling several times with no answer. When I finally did speak to the receptionist, who does not have the best people skills she informed me she would speak with Linda (owner) about my experience and Linda would send me an email. I did not receive an email so I called back. When the receptionist called me back, she informed me that there was nothing they could do since it had been 3 weeks since my appointment. However for most of that time I was out of town and when I did return I could not get in touch with anyone. This is the first time I have had an issue with the service so I thought they would take it seriously, instead they made me feel like I was not telling the truth. Trust me, there is no "customer is always right" at this salon. I continued to go to Onyx despite it being the slowest manicure and pedicure compared to anywhere else in downtown Vancouver because I did want to support a local business. It's a shame because I would have been a life long customer and I did really like the owner. But for the prices they charge, customer service should be more of a priority. read more

Quite possibly the best nail salon I have ever been to - and trust me, I've been to many. I really appreciate the fact that they are committed to the CND product line. They have the full set of CND colors and more importantly, by using the entire product line, you get superior results. My manicure lasts longer without chipping, bubbling or peeling. I wish I could give 10 stars. I got a gel manicure for $50, and which is moderately priced. I had my BEST manicure of all of 2017 in this salon. Worth every single penny. The appointment took exactly an hour, and I waited about 3 minutes for my scheduled appointment. Every single girl working in the salon was beyond nice, and ultra talented nail artists (not your normal "technicians"). All their equipment is high-end and brand new. I have never, ever had such an overall great experience in a nail salon. We need one in Los Angeles right away. I got my local friend a gift card, it was THAT amazing. The first time I went to onyx was for a shellac manicure. There were a few problems. The first was that they wouldn't clean up my cuticles because I guess that's against the CND philosophy. Which is fine, but would've been nice if they'd accommodated my preferences. The polish was then applied very lopsided and uneven near my cuticles, which would've gone unfixed had I not said anything. The manicure took two and a half hours in total, so I was pretty annoyed but resisted writing a review because it was only my first time there. Because of the price, I decided for manicures that I'd keep going to a much farther away but better quality and more affordable nail salon. I decided to give them a second shot for just a shellac removal, as I figured it'd be quick, easy and low cost. The shellac removal took 45 minutes and cost $21. That's more than half of what I pay for a shellac manicure at my regular place. When I commented on the price I was told its because of the difficulty they had removing the polish, even though I kept telling the woman who did it that she didn't have to be so gentle and that I was short on time. So after those two experiences, I really can't recommend onyx, especially since there is still shellac left on my nails and I'm now late for my next appointment! read more
