Prior to a NYC visit I did some reconnaissance and found the One Star Bar. It was less than a 10 minute walk from my hotel. It is a narrow bar with 7-10 beers on draft and some canned beers. We enjoyed the Narragansett pounder cans at 6.00 each. The best part is we arrived a little after 730 on a Saturday which is trivia night. My wife and I had a strong showing. Attentive bartenders, fun environment, fair prices, I'd highly recommend the One Star. Definitely a bar to look out for. read more

You know, I had bizarrely always wanted to go to this bar purely because it's called One Star and then go home and write it a review that does not consist of a one star rating. Yes, it's a watering hole, dive bar. No frills. Don't expect much out of it. Average prices. But it was also empty. Which is great during covid. Actually, personally for me an empty bar any time of the year is great in my opinion. The bartender was friendly. The beer selection is decent on tap. I remember they used to do trivia here when I used to be part of a league back in the day. After a few rounds we got a buy back on a beer and even some cheez-its crackers. These are things that truly speak to my heart. I also noticed they have pop tarts here and I didn't find out which flavors but I'm really intrigued enough to some day in the not so distant future to come back and find out. read more

My friends and I came here after going to the bougie bars New York City offered. This place is definitely a diamond in the rough. It was a great dive bar. It was filled with locals. It was also trivia night so the bar was packed. The bartender was very attentive and always checked up on our next drink orders. They have a decent selection of canned/draft beers for $5-$6 dollars. They also have nightly drink specials. We were having tall boys and a shot for $8. We had plenty of drinks and shots for all under $100. This is the place to go for cheap drinks and a chill vibe without breaking your bank account. One Star is a perfectly fine bar, though I did find it to be a bit of a 'tweener, in that it has a bit of a dive bar feel, but with more upscale bar prices. Beer list was decent--mostly macro beer standard like Bud Light, but did also have Coney Island Mermaid Pils and a Founders Oatmeal Stout on tap. We had finished a big meal, so I didn't wind up experimenting with the mixed drinks, just stuck with the beer myself. Beer was mostly $8-$9/pint, my friends had beer and wine; four rounds set us back about $128 with tip--thought it a bit pricey for what it was. Bar itself is spacious and dark, but lacked some charm/uniqueness of a true dive--perhaps that can come with time. Ultimately it was fine, if a bit nondescript. I would probably pop in again if I'm the neighborhood, but certainly wouldn't go out of my way just to come here. read more

They might be called one star but they won't be getting that from me. This place is a chill, low key bar with a pretty good selection of interesting beer at the best prices I've seen in NYC. It's not a dive, just a low key place that's clean and neat. They don't serve food other than Cheez it crackers and Pop Tarts and yep I saw people order them both. The place isn't huge but I was able to get a seat at the bar on a weeknight. If you're in the area and in need of a brew this is the place, just eat first unless you want to stuff your pie hole with crackers or pop tarts. read more

Stopped in tonight by myself for a couple of vodka sodas before a play. There was a bell hooks quote that I really liked on a stall in the women's bathroom. A nice man offered to get me a piece of pizza from across the street but sadly I had just eaten. I was reading a book called WASTED and when the bartender brought me the check it said WASTED on it and I said, 'I haven't been wasted in years! This is awesome!' and she laughed. Terrible people! I mean, sure it's got cheap beer, and it's not overly nice, but it is somehow lacking the seediness that makes a bar a dive. Take the Patriot Saloon; the second you walk in it's dark and gross, there are old guys chugging PBRs and there is metal (probably) playing in the background. One Star? It's just somehow too nice...maybe it was the clientele hanging out (not overly rowdy or hammered at 1130 on a Friday), or maybe it was the lack of blaringly loud shitty music in the background? All I know is that I ordered up a 25oz bush light for 7$ (don't judge me..or do, whatever) and was able to have conversation above the not blaring music and not screaming people around me. If you're looking for a place to grab cheap drinks near Madison Sq park, you could do far worse than One Star. read more

By far my favorite bar in Manhattan. It's a mixed crowd, depending on your luck and the day and the time. Sometimes you just have the regulars, sometimes a bunch of corporate fratboys, sometimes an inexplicable combination of hipsters and tourists. But the gang behind the bar are never anything less than delightful and friendly. The drinks are all the basics - nothing fancy if you're a cocktail lover, but everything a good dive should have. Take your friends here or come alone. Hang out at the bar and you'll probably be delighted. I'm gay and have had dates here, and never felt unwelcome.
