I'd visited before a few years back and remembered enjoying it so I swung through with a buddy I had here visiting me. Service was mediocre at best but that's not my issue. I can deal with apathetic waitresses if the food is decent. Spoiler: It wasn't. I'd had a pretty rough night and just wanted a comfort food to settle my stomach, but the menu was vast and everything unappealing to my worse for wear belly. I finally realized I needed to settle for some good ol' greasy French fries to absorb the abuse I'd poured into it the prior evening. I also realized I should probably try and get a little protein in me if I wanted to make it past noon. Great. Done. Decision made. I waived over the uninterested waitress and placed our orders. Sandwich-whatever for the guy, fries with cheese on them for me. Time to wait. And wait. Annnnnd wait. Finally food!!! Yes. Oh my sweet baby Jesus, YES! I'm starving at this point and here comes our waitress with dude's sandwich-whatever and my fries. Not cheese fries, not fries with a side of cheese, juuuust fries. Wtf? I asked Miss Personality why no cheese and she said the chef refused. Oh did he?! Did the code of ethics book at O.C. bar him from slapping a few slices of of cheddar on my potatoes? And if so, why couldn't she saunter her happy little butt over and tell me that so I could have ordered a grilled cheese or something slightly more appealing than naked fries? She left us with a shrug and that was that. Homie's sammy was meh. He had a bit over half and I've never seen that southern boy do anything short of near licking his plate clean. This was a really nice open air type restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building along a busy strip. It was recommended to us as we were on vacation in Lihue so we went. The waiters we had seemed laid back as that is the style where we were , it was fine except the service was a tad slow when ordering. We seemed to wait several mins til a waiter came to our table. They have a big menu, we thought and alot of healthy food . Husb ordered a turkey club sandwich , I got a spinach wrap . All of it was HUGE , I had to cut mine in bits as it was just too huge to try to eat. We could only eat half and took the other half back to our condo for supper the next night ! All in all , the food was soo good we didn't mind the little wait we had ....we definitely decided it was worth it. Ending up at the Olympic Cafe twice... It seems there aren't any other bars in that little walkway of Kuhio Hwy in Kapaa that are open to the honeymooning day drinkers. (at least none with signage for thirsty newlyweds) We chose with some tall sugary drinks topped with a little umbrella and a pineapple slice... as well as the seared ahi appetizer. In the Kauai Revealed book it tells you not to eat fish here during taco happy hour... so I was hesitant. Especially when looking at the bar & glass chiller area, gosh- it looked like it had never seen some cleaner and rag in MONTHS. BLARG! Pretty disappointing experience. Extremely sticky table, dirty floors. Food: not the greatest either. We ordered the fruit plate - for $15 we got couple pieces of pineapple, tons of melons, two pieces of banana and three pieces of grapes. In Kauai we kind of were expecting more tropical fruits like lots of pineapple, mango, passion fruit, etc. Also, we ordered mushroom quesadilla and chicken ham/cheese grilled sandwich. Quesadilla was eatable (kind of hard to ruin that), but chicken was extremely dry with little cheese. Overall - there are better foods in Kapaa. read more

We stopped by this place because it looked busy from the street each time we drove by. Negatives, followed by positive... My father got fish poisoning from this restaurant (this is what the hospital called it). They said 3/4 of all fish poisonings that come in are from this place! I am not sure i can believe that based on the other ratings (and our experience is only an N=1...) His face and trunk were hot and covered in a bright red rash but cleared up in about 5 hours with a Benedryl. I guess we should be thankful for that vs. other types of foof poisoning...Other negatives- we were a party of 6 and the 18% automatic gratuity was annoying because our waitress took 20 minutes to bring drinks. We gave her our card to pay as we were served our main course and it took another 35 minutes to bring it out- we had to ask for the check again. I understand island time but this was a little more than normal (we were in the back and away from everyone else). It definitely smells like a bar that you hose down at the end of the night. Being from SoCal and frequenting New Orleans often, if you've been to college bars or downtown boozy bars there- you know what I'm talking about. Let's just say that even though this restaurant has issues (service and quality of food), I can't get beyond the lack of cleanliness. I can overlook some grunge, but I was in the restroom with a waitress that flushed the toilet, came out of the stall, turned on the water, splashed the water on her fingers, turned the water off, fixed her hair, grabbed a paper towel, and walked out to continue her shift. YEP, she didn't even pretend to use soap. Proper hand washing is such a basic way to prevent illness, and REQUIRED by law for the restaurant staff. I think the staff suffers from a lack of training in the basics of working in food service. I won't be eating here again. read more

Ugh. I'd give this place a zero if I could. This place is just awful. We ate there as a last resort and have regretted it ever since. The service was SO incredibly bad and the food was barely edible. How hard is it to make a simple burrito and iced tea???? The couple next to us were seated promptly and orders taken a solid 10 mins after we had ordered.... And guess who got their food first?! They actually were even able to finish eating AND pay before we received our cold food. Nice. To make matters worse, they brought out the wrong food! We were so hungry and tired of waiting (now 1 hr and 12 mins later!) we just ate what they brought (and it sucked). Food portions are huge, yet very bland. It seems like a waste of food for such a tediously thought out menu. I don't like paying expensive prices for food, yet I'd rather pay more for a smaller entree and it taste worthy of a restaurant kitchen than pay less for a huge portion of flavorless food. Two words: dirty kitchen. Living here, we notice the place keeps getting dirtier and smellier. We could hardly even sit near the bar area last time because it smelled so much of rotting fruit and old liquor. Also, check out the screen door on the back stairs that leads up to the kitchen: it's completely brown/black and hardly visible because it is so filled with accumulated grease and dirt. I ordered the fish tacos because it said "best fish tacos on the island" on the menu. I even asked the waitress if they are good and she said that they are great! So I ordered them and they were on a plate in a rubbery tortilla that was wet. There was only fish cubes in the tortilla. The fish was over cooked. There was no sauce no spice... Nothing! I had to ask the waitress to bring me so me hot sauce and she brought me some Taco Bell Hot Sauce!!! Are you kidding me?!?! Wow! If they consider those the best fish tacos on the island, I feel sorry for locals of Kauai. Come visit San Diego and I will show them fish REAL fish tacos!!!! And they won't cost you $12 like they do at Olympic Cafe. My girlfriend ordered the BLT and it came to her on burnt toast. You would think the waitress would notice that and not serve it. I would like to be able to give a complete review but all I can speak to is how we were treated. We were undecided about where we wanted to have breakfast so we stopped for a coffee at another place before deciding we would try the Olympic Café . Coffee in hand we walked up the stairs. We were greeted right away and seated by a friendly staff member and then approached by, I assume the manager, who told us outside food or drinks are not allowed. Ok I get it but nothing was posted and it isn't as if they serve specialty coffees. The guy was flat out rude and we felt that we were basically being kicked out. WOW! The Olympic Cafe is great for watching traffic drive by. Over priced frozen bar food with fair service. The food tastes like Costco frozen food. Carrots and broccoli from a bag heated in the microwave. I ordered the pulled pork. Salty pork with OK BBQ sauce. Wait staff is not friendly and they did not help with selections. They would rather talk to each other than wait on the customers. I would not waste my time again on this frozen food mecca. read more

Sad to say that this was the worst restaurant we went to while in Kauai. We were seated, then asked a waiter if all the appetizers (even pointing at the selections in the menu were half off) were 6 dollars during happy hour and he said yes, they all are! So we were delighted and began deciding what we wanted but then our waitress greeted us and told us what appetizers were for 6 dollars during happy hour and we were like ...okay..someone just said all appetizers were 6 dollars but whatever we let it go. We ended up ordering calamari and coconut shrimp for appetizers. The coconut shrimp was pretty good, tasted like what coconut shrimp should taste like. Nothing special, but not bad. The calamari, like a lot of their other foods, lacked taste. So for the main dish, I ordered the blackened Ono sandwich and it came with waffle fries. The waffle fries were good but the fish lacked taste. The other people in my party ordered the steak, a sandwich and the tostada salad. I tried the tostada salad and the shell tasted kind of stale. Overall we were all disappointed witht our meals. Our server was friendly, but seemed frazzled the entire time. What really took the cake of this whole was that we ordered the Kauai pie and it took 25 MINUTES to come out. We got full waiting for it and when we were trying to get the attention of our waitress to cancel it but she was no where to be found. When it finally came, it was massive. But literally 1 minute after it was placed the whole thing fell apart and melted. It was pretty good though, but not worth the wait. The positive thing out of this was the street view was nice. I wouldn't recommend coming here, and I for sure will not be coming here again. read more

So my husband and I are staying at Pono Kai resort and asked our concierge what he would suggest for a dinner we could walk to.. He suggested both Olympic Cafe and another place. We decided to try Olympic cafe however we never got to even eat!!!! Due to the fact we walked I had a small backpack on to carry my wallet, glasses and a few other essentials. When we were on our way to being seated we were told we could not be served because I was wearing a backpack!! I am 51 and my husband is 52, do we look like criminals?? I asked why and he said it was because it was taco bar night. OMG - as if a couple of mid lifers are going to shove taco ingredients into my backpack.. Needless to say we walked out. I was pissed. Won't go back because that was crap. We ate at the other restaurant that was recommended called Eastside cafe and it was wonderful. Decent food. Decent service, but the difficulty the waitress and the general manager gave me splitting checks was infuriating. We had a group of six, two people which were paying together, and the waitress refused to split our checks though we were all willing to pay the group gratuity. We all ended up agreeing to split the check equally on five cards, but one person paid 20 more dollars than they actually would have paid. I tried to explain to the general manager how inconvenient that was, and she just told us that was restaurant policy. I find it difficult to enjoy a place that won't acclimate to their customers, especially after trying to explain how inconvenient their policy was. Upon arrival, it was a little busy but not too overloading, we waited to get seated. My girlfriend and I were seated but it took about 20 minutes for a waiter to even pass by our table. We had to ask someone to take our order. The waiter was a super cool chick but it just didn't make up our time there. The food was kind of like a TV dinner. I got the Ahi Furikake and it was a bit cold. The ahi was a square piece of fish. It came with two scoops of room temperature garlic mashed potatoes and carrot chips and broccoli that came from a frozen vegetable bag. For the price that they charge, you're just paying for the fish. 2 stars because I love Ahi. read more

I was quite disappointed with this place. My two friends and I went in at 8:00 pm tonight and got quickly seating, which was nice. It wasn't busy at all with barely anyone in there. We sat there for about 25 minutes and didn't get any waters. No one gave us any service. No one even checked up on us. I was very angry that I just got up and left. Hubby and I were staying in Princeville and weather was blah, so we drove towards Kapaa for some shopping. We got hungry and saw the high stars on Yelp, so we stopped in for lunch. Big mistake. Sure the open window seating is fine, but the view is just of the streets. Not as glamorous as the reviews noted. I got the fish tacos and they were average. Nothing special about them - positive thing is that it was abundant but didn't have any flavor at all. Hubby got a cheeseburger and it wasn't anything special. The kalua pork burrito had a pretty good flavor, but was obviously sitting under a hot lamp for hours. The edges of the tortilla tasted like it was microwaved, were chewy and gross. The rice was dehydrated and crunchy. My GF had a chicken wrap and it was one of the most bland things I ever tasted. The service was questionable, not very friendly. This place has ups and downs. The ups include gigantic desserts. The downs include unhappy servers, coupled with mandatory tips, which makes for an interesting night. They also serve vegetables straight out of the bag. No cutting or spices. Just baby carrots that are steamed. read more
