What a great location! They are perched high above the Kuhio Highway in downtown Kapa'a and face west towards the awesome hills and valleys. We stumbled upon it when we were hurriedly leaving Shaka Taco across the street after we say their lackluster menu. They have a really big menu here and a full bar. The breeze coming in the open terrace upstairs was amazing and made the hot day feel perfect. My honeys burger was really good and the giant criss-cut fries were super crispy. I had the fish taco platter and it was a lot of food. The fish tasted a little strange, really fishy, so I only ate one of the tacos. The black beans and rice were nothing to write home about, but I was in love with their grilled banana. Brown sugar on one side and grill is for a few minutes and its one of the best fruit desserts I've ever had! Recommended for the views, but stay away from the tacos, even though the menu boasts them being the best on the island. read more

EWWWWWW. My wife and I were on our honeymoon and loving Kauai. We ordered dinner with drinks as we watched the street below. I ordered a seafood platter and enjoyed it as we were serenaded by the open mic night at the bar across the street. As we were waiting for the check I happened to look down at the remainder of food on my plate AND WATCHED A COCKROACH CRAWL OUT OF MY HALF EATEN FRIES. We had dinner: ahi tuna, a pasta dish, pulled pork, and some Ono along with appetizer. The food was tasty. Ahi particularly good. The beer was cold and refreshing. Extra points for the ambiance - it's on the second floor and is open-air on two sides, so you can sit on the edge and feel the cool ocean breeze. The view on the ocean side is mostly obstructed and the other side is just a street view, but we still really enjoyed the open-air ambiance. It has a bar and grill feel - you won't find anyone calling it upscale. There is a really long menu with a ton of options, including beer, wine and cocktails. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. A little service goes a long way. We stopped here twice while we were strolling around Kapaa and thought that it would give us a nice view and the menu looked reasonable. Both those things were correct, what we weren't prepared for was the guy that was high on something that ended up being our server. We sat down, got a menu and then just sat....and waited...while tons of waitresses, hostesses even a manager (I would assume, since it was a person bringing out food in regular street clothes??) just walked passed us. We open our menu's chose what we want, closed them...opened back up and then closed. Still nothing. Finally someone took our drink order...and then our beers just sat at the bar while our waiter walked around the place with his hands in his pockets talking to other servers and staff. Finally our drinks came and food soon after. The atmosphere, beer, food and view are all awesome. Service...poor. We just thought it was the server we had...but on our second try at the place (since we were staying in Kapaa and needed a close place to eat - with limited options)...the serve was nicer, more attentive, but had too many tables, our appetizer never came and when we needed anything...everyone was just running around like chickens with their head cut off. Beware of Scombroid poisoning. This place was recommended by a local. I really wanted to like it. They stop serving breakfast promptly at noon to my dismay, so I ordered the fish taco plate. The fish had a tangy taste which I found odd. I ate one of the two tacos. Twenty minutes later I had a horrible headache and my face, neck, and chest felt as if they were on fire. A tingly tongue, itchy neck, palpitations, and breathing trouble came next. Luckily I had Benedryl on me, so I took two. In about an hour I felt better. The headache eventually went away later in the evening. I spoke with management. They had never heard of Scombroid poisoning. Um, okay. You need read up on it and prevent it. The food was below average, service and reception was bad. There were plenty of empty and open tables with lots of staff. The waitress told us the restaurant would loose their liquor license if our less than 2 year old son was drinking milk (that we ordered from the restaurant) out of his thermos sippy cup. Perhaps this is just NOT a kid friendly restaurant. Regardless, the Food Network would not be impressed with this place. The food is hit or miss! I live here and I just dont know why I keep going back. I keep hoping its going to improve. The service just straight up sucks. I even know the owner. Some of the waitresses are snooty. They dont bring you water immediately, they bring it after you order. No common sense here either. One woman sat my two young daughters and I right next to the bar where loud, foul mouth drunks were sitting, when I asked for a different table because of this, they gave me attitude and said it wasn't fair to the waitress. ??? We went here on a hunch for lunch and were sorely disappointed:-(. My husband had the Ahi Burrito which would've been ok except that the Ahi was under seasoned and fishy tasting which ruined it completely. My Shrimp Salad was decent, (slightly under seasoned as well) other than the shrimp, which had a bad fishy taste as well. Neither of us finished our entree. The only good part of our meal, which kept us from going hungry, was the appetizer hummus plate. A group of us came to eat later in the evening and all left satisfied. They have a wide variety of options. The food came out pretty quickly and everything was made to each ones liking. The beers were the cheapest I have seen on Kauai; $4.50 to $5.50. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, I'm reading reviews after having visited. I had the mango macadamia nut ono and it was super dry because it was soo overcooked. the vegetables were not seasoned and also undercooked. The mashed potatoes were unfortunately the highlight for me. I like potatoes, but unless I order potato boats for some odd reason, they shouldn't be the best part of the dish. The flavor on the fish was awesome, but it would have been mind-boggling greatness if the fish were cooked right. If it's a case of not being able to pan fry the fish without over cooking, maybe it shouldn't be on the menu. Hostess was great, server/bartender was rude. read more

Piña colada awful other drink mostly grapefruit juice little alcohol. Then the food a tomato and Brie sandwich not bad and fish tacos. The menu says best tacos on the island, which island is that. Nasty. The first thing I noticed were the stairs walking up to the restaurant. Gross. They need to be power washed in the worst way. Second thing was all the condiments on the table were half empty, sticky and not wiped down from the night before. First thing in the morning everything should be full. We have been here several times in the past on our annual Kaui visits. This place has gone down hill. Dirty and stinky describe the dining and lounge area. Even though this is an open air eatery, some flies are to be expected; but this place is infested with them. Staff spent more time talking with each other than helping customers, and generally seemed disinterested. Wife described it like someone died as they all appeared like zombies. I had lunch at this resturaunt today and asked for a medium burger, waited about 20-30 min to get a burnt overcooked unappetizing burger, also forgot the bacon that came with the burger. Bad food service, note for all servers on good service. Unfortunately, our experience at this Café left my wife and I with mixed feelings about the food and service. The manager was of particular concern in all of this. His attitude was less than amenable, accusing us of being confrontational for attempting to explain our issue with both the service and the food! We ate at the Olympic Café twice. The first time, the food and the service was good. The second time, no so much! Our order came out piecemeal and was cold. The waitress who initially waited on us took a break to breastfeed her infant, something neither my wife nor I needed to know! The only reason I mention it, the manager felt it necessary to explain the breastfeeding to us. When we explained we didn't need to know, nor did we care about the breastfeeding, and that it's something of a personal matter, he called us confrontational. With that, the manager, an absolute waste of the establishments' money, began to anger both my wife and I. The end result, we were not charged for the food. We left feeling puzzled by a manager that seemed bent on using personal issues to explain the poor service and the lack of seamless food delivery. read more

Horrible service never waited so long for things in a restaurant before. We had to wait at least 10-15 for everything from getting water, to ordering the waitress had to be flagged down we had to ask other servers for things. Took 15 minstrel to get coffee another 15 to get a refill. When we got to finally order dessert (the Kauai pie) it took another 10 or 15 minutes and by the the place was almost empty. We ended up refusing it when it came we were so over it. The food was good, the service sucked. read more

The staff was very wonderful. The food however not as great. I ordered fish tacos and it came deconstructed which at first I thought was a unique way to serve it but the way it was in small piles on the plate doesn't work well with salsa. The liquid from both beans and salsa made the tortillas soggy and fall apart, maybe if it came in it's own little bowls this would have been better. But the fish was very over cooked and extremely dry. The fried banana was really good though. Overall I wasn't impressed with the food even though the service was excellent. We enjoyed The Olympic Cafe for breakfast today. It was fun to sit above the street in an open air cafe. Our service was very friendly. The food is good and large with most dishes being about $10 or less. Coffee comes in a cup the size you would use at home instead of the usual tiny variety. The only drawback for us is no kid menu-at least for breakfast. My boys, who are 5 and 7 could have shared a meal and had leftovers. read more
