I worked with Doug on my first set of custom footbeds. 30 minutes and dozens of micro-adjustments later, the "mold" of my foot had been made and I was one step closer to a much improved skiing experience. The completed footbeds were ready in about a day, cost $200 + tax, and literally have changed the way I ski. I know it's easy to overhype a small adjustment to one's skiing gear, but it's the truth. Given the way the footbed cradles my heel and supports the arch, each turn is initiated quickly and confidently. I can't recommend them enough. Quick aside: when I picked up the footbeds, Buck (the owner) was in the shop. He was discussing how his methodologies and techniques were fundamentally different from other custom footbed options in the market. It was really cool to see someone that passionate about his craft. It's also great to support a local guy who only cares about how much fun you have out on the slopes. read more

Had a wonderful experience getting new ski boots for my wife and I. Buck was not only professional but also genuinely concerned about making sure that we had the best *long-term* skiing experience. If only every retail experience were this delightful! read more

They do snowboard boots too!!! Tried a few different snowboard boots over the seasons and it never felt right with weird pressure points and tingling in the soles of my feet. Dropped into Olympic Boots with my friend who was looking for ski boots. Explained the situation to Buck who took the time to look at my feet and gait. Made a custom liner that although wasn't cheap, totally got rid of all my foot pain! Totally worth the price! Awesome. Definitely recommend Buck and his team if you have weird foot and boot issues. read more

Ignorance is bliss....until you find out what you've been missing! I knew I needed new boots, but had no idea what I was in for. Orthotics, custom liners, an expert shell fit, and an on-hill evaluation later, I wound up not only with comfortable, high-performance boots, but with a connection to my skis I've never felt before! Doug at Olympic Bootworks is not just a boot-fitter. He's a skier, a mountaineer, a patient consultant, and is genuinely interested in making you better when you get out there. The approach he and the rest of the guys take is customized, thorough, and worth every penny! HIGHLY recommended!!!! read more

I've now skied 6 days on my new Lange boots with Buck's custom insole and Intuition liners. What a world of difference from my old tubby boots! The heel cup in the custom insole provides tremendous precision, and my big powder skis that I used to struggle to control are now tractable. Buck and his staff were welcoming, fun, and professional. Highly recommended. read more

After a mediocre day with a pair of pedestrian boots and skis, I happened in to Olympic Boots. I was kicking around, checking out their inventory. Another customer was being helped by someone so I was off on my own for about 5 minutes. A friendly guy named Buck politely approached and asked if I needed any assistance. I told him about my disappointing day on the hill and he perked right up, 'Well that's a problem I think we can help you with' he confidently yet humbly proclaimed. His words were an understatement. Within an hour I was wearing a new pair of boots, with custom orthotics (do NOT leave his shop without a pair of his custom designed Heel-Loc inserts). He had my new boots ready for me by 8:00am sharp the next morning, complete with a money back guarantee and the best cup of coffee in Squaw. I am not lying. What I experienced that next day was nothing short of awesome. I had the most comfortable and responsive boots strapped to my feet ever, and I have been strapping sticks to my legs and rushing down snow covered hills for 40 years. I absolutely carved like I hadn't in 2 decades and by the end of the day my feet were more comfortable than when I strapped on my new plastic cocoons over my grateful toes at 8:45 am. I never had heard of Olympic Boots, had no idea who Buck was. His easy and approachable manner combined with his experience and attention to detail is very very rare. Do yourself a favor. Shop here. Ryan did a great job of setting me up with an amazing pair of comfortable Lange boots. He knows a lot about feet and boots and took the time to explain everything he was doing and why. At no point did I feel rushed, even though the store was pretty busy. Their custom footbeds are definitely worth the time they take to mold and fit your feet - so don't come in here thinking you'll be out in an hour! Really cool little shop, very cool and knowledgeable staff. read more

As I think this is the first Yelp review I've ever done it should make a statement about how I feel about the service I received from Bootworks. I bought my boots (Lange) from them last season, skied comfortably, while breaking in the boots, into this season and suddenly came up with a small toe issue. Went in, got great service immediately and was having my liner re-sized. Then had a conversation with Buck about some the Zip Fit cork liners and we went that direction. I love them. I'm actually skiing pain free...that might not sound all that great to most but it's the first time in 40 plus years of skiing I could say that. Great service, great team, thanks to Buck and to Colin as well. read more

Buck at Olympic Bootworks has designed a custom footbed for ski and snowboard boots along with hiking and workwear. I am an avid skier and through the years I have owned numerous brands of custom footbeds. They include super feet cork a couple of times, amfit and several others. I had Buck custom mold his footbeds for my ski boots. I bought them and skied them. I can honestly say they are the best footbeds I have owned. I have always needed canting work on my ski boot soles however with Buck's footbeds, I am spot on. They are also warmer than my cork footbeds. Buck's concept is the forefoot buckles remain looser and his footbed locks in the heal. It works! This also keeps your toes warmer. They ski great, my left turn improved immediately. I like them so much, I just got some of Buck's heat modable liners. Check out Buck's shop, I think you will be pleased. All the employees are very knowledgable and great to work with. read more

I was having a ROUGH time. Recently purchased a new pair of Lange RX120s and I had a bunch of issues. In the shop where I bought them, fit was great, but after a few days of skiing in them I was in agony. Burning balls (of the feet you perverts) and completely numb toes after a day on the slopes. I had a trip to Squaw/Alpine planned and getting to Olympic Boot Works was as high on my list as skiing the headwall. Something had to be done. They have a good rep. Maybe they could help. I stopped in and talked things over with Bobbi. She listened, she measured, she made me stand, she made me walk around. She told me I had weird-ish feet. It's cool. Runs in my family. She suggested a set of custom insoles and some modifications to the stock liner. I said go for it. I got molds made and then out came a razor. I was apprehensive... new boots... razor blades?, but she seemed to know what she was doing. I stepped back. Chop, chop, cut, cut and the boots are handed back to me. I left and put the boots on the next morning. Still using a pair of non custom footbeds. Things were definitely better numbness down say 40%. Picked up the completed footbeds the next day. Nice quick turnaround. Threw them in and headed over to Alpine. I have to say. I was astounded after I skied a day In them. I always thought the stories of the difference custom footbeds and small modifications could make to a stock boot were exaggerated. Now I'm a believer. In a huge way. Numbness pretty much gone. Burning foot pain gone. AND control increased noticeably to boot (HA - see what I did there?). I'll tell you, the insoles were not cheap, but I would spend the money again in a second. It's a pleasure to go to an old school place where people know their stuff, are cool and helpful. Highly recommend if your feet are crying out in pain or if you just want your skis to do what you want them to. When my liners pack out, I'm heading back up there and getting a custom set made. read more

The crew at Olympic Bootworks did a fantastic job. I came in looking for an upgrade, and they were happy to help. They made sure to listen to what I wanted and the problems I was having with my old pair. They made the fitting process pleasant, with a complimentary beer and, of course, some ski movies on the TV. Their boots fit perfectly, helping me to step up my game. Great value for the money. There's a good reason some ski movie stars have their endorsements in the shop. read more

Buck and his crew do an excellent job in fitting your ski boots, and are happy to have you return and dial in the fit, even a few years after the purchase when you've packed out the liner. Having boot problems? Go see Doug! In my book he is the resident Boot Fit phD of the valley. He will make your boot problems go away. A genuine phD of Boot Fit will see things others don't. I have a story to illustrate this point. My pinky toe was jamming into the side of the boot, causing bruising and terrific pain. The first shop I visited punched out the toe box. No relief. They punched it again. No relief. The second shop said the previous punches were too small. They punched more, a lot more. No relief. The third shop said "wow, there's a lot of punching here. You should have plenty of space!". They ground down a rivet. No relief. Fourth shop: Olympic Bootworks. Doug looked at my foot and my boot, and told me to stand up and bend my knees forward. He explained that the problem was my *foot*, not the boot. My toe splays outward as my knees bend, he said, so no matter how much they punched the boot, my foot was going to rotate until it contacted the side. At a minimum I needed a new footbed to stabilize the foot and stop the rotation. Nevertheless for a variety of fit issues I decided to abandon my 7yr old boots and get a new set up. Doug built an "unweighted" footbed and set me up in Intuition boot liners for my new Langes. No more pain, and boy do these boots perform! Doug said I would notice my turns would initiate much quicker and easier in the new boots. He wasn't kidding. For the first couple hours in them I kept overpowering my skis because the turns were initiating so much quicker than I was used to. It was like going from an SUV to a Porsche. The new boots required less input to respond. What a joy.The snug fit increased my confidence at high speeds and on bumps. I can trust the skis because I can feel and respond better to everything going on. I'm "dialed in". A few weeks later I convinced my wife to give up her old cruddy "soft-shell" boots for a new Doug system. She loves them. Thanks, Doug. You turned around my ski season, from grimmace to great. read more

Olympic Bootworks is an amazing local business with 1) stellar customer service, 2) years and years of collective experience doing ONLY this, 3) top-level expertise and very meticulous attention to detail, and 4) reasonable prices in the long run, all things considered. Buck, the owner, is an incredibly smart, dedicated, and compassionate person who worked with me on multiple occasions this past season to ensure that my boots were fitting great. I have interacted with many of the employees at this location and fully trust their knowledge and expertise on boot fitting. I would 100% recommend going to Olympic Bootworks if you are thinking of skiing more than one weekend a season, as I believe their product and service is a incredible investment that will not only ensure maximum happiness and comfort while skiing but can also help make you a better skier in the long run! A couple things to keep in mind: 1) They don't have all these 5-star reviews for no reason! The line for service can get pretty crowded on weekends; expect to wait ~1 hr or more depending on what time you get on the waitlist. In my experience, they have made every effort to see me and complete any services as quickly as possible, but if possible, try to come right as they open, on a weekday, or on a non-holiday weekend. 2) They are a small local business and as such may not have the deep discounts that the big box/online stores have. That said, when you pay for boots there, you are not only getting a quality product but you are also getting the VERY extensive fitting process that comes with it, including selection of the right boot for your own feet/skiing ability (which can be very hard to tell just from reading product descriptions online) as well as any modifications that your boots will need going forward. That is crucial, since if you've bought boots before, you know that getting them to fit perfectly can sometimes be a season-long process as you ski in them more, the lining molds to your feet, and you discover different hot spots in your boots. Olympic Bootworks stands by their sales, and if your boots don't fit perfectly, they will work hard to rectify those issues as part of their ongoing boot fitting process. 3) One of their signature products is their proprietary custom orthotic insoles. These are definitely unlike other custom insoles that I have used in the past and I do believe they have improved my stability and skiing. Give them a try! After dealing with several different boot shops around the Bay Area over the past few years, I have to say that Olympic Bootworks has definitely won me over as a loyal customer for life. It is truly a gem and one of things that makes skiing in Tahoe so special. Thank you!! read more

As an intermediate skier I made the mistake of buying my boots here based on good reviews. I think I wasn't taken very seriously since I wasn't local or an advanced skier. The owner put me in boots that were incredibly difficult to put on but he said they would be fine. I told him they hurt my toes and he said that when I skied they would not cause me pain. Boy was he wrong. Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to ski in them till I was back at my home resort (Bear Valley). I was in utter foot agony. I tried to push through but finally had to quit about an hour in. My feet were bruised for several days afterwards. Thankfully, I was able to bring them to the ski shop at Bear and the man working there spent over an hour trying to fit them to my feet correctly. He said it was the wrong boot and wrong orthotics for my foot (which believe me by that time I knew). He was able to make the boots tolerable (which was a huge improvement), but I was of course charged for the fitting. I went to OBW at the end of the ski season and I am left wondering if they intentionally pawned off an ill fitting boot because they wanted to move inventory and they knew I wasn't local. I feel taken advantage of and I am out a lot of money for boots that are only just tolerable. read more

Buck was great in fitting my wife and I for new ski boots. He took the time to check our feet, our gait and found the right boots for us. Then, for the final step he explained his theory on foot support and made us custom "heel-locs". Can't wait for ski season. Aloha Buck read more

Great service. Boots feel great. Will definitely recommend to others!

Top Notch. Personable, professional, reasonable. A good bootfitter must have knowledge of the bones, ligaments, and muscles in the foot, and must be able to transfer the customer's gobbledeegook into what's really going on in the boot. These guys listen and make the changes necessary. The heel-loc system is smart--Buck has HIS idea and he's got more and more people buying in to it. My son, a fairly high level U19 racer recently went in and got the whole works. Not often that a teenager says "woah. that was impressive." I'll definitely be recommending these guys! read more

Even though the staff initially welcomed me, and I appreciated the coffee while waiting in line, I had an absolutely awful experience with one of their staff. I was interested in buying boots and I told him that I was somewhat cost-conscious. He immediately shut down after I said that and treated me very rudely for the rest of the interaction. I feel like this place won't have anything to do with you unless you're willing to drop $1000 on a pair of boots. I was also very offended by four different posters around the room that objectified women, including one of a woman in lingerie and a pair of ski boots. This place really needs to modernize itself and work a lot on customer service. If you don't treat everyone who walks in the door well why should anyone walk in the door? read more

My mom says that I'm special. Well her special boy has super flat feet, that are very wide in the front and thin at the heel, with a left foot that is smaller than the right foot. Unfortunately my special feel make boot fitting a daunting task. After my first day skiing of the season I found that my boots were super packed out from the past two years of 80+ days on the slope, and so I visited the shop at 2pm after a pretty full day of skiing to get my boots looked at. Buck the owner hooked me up with a custom footbed that he makes with a system he invented, and new ziplock liners. He made the process super easy, and even turned around the work by the end of the day (less than 3 hours) when he heard that I would be skiing out of area the next day. Buck was very skilled in the molding process of both the footbed and the zipliners and my comfort and fit level is at least 5x better than my old stock gear. I would highly recommend anyone looking at get any bootwork done to visit Buck's shop. After 3x pairs of boots in the past 5 years, this was definitely the best boot fitting experience and gear I have received. read more

I have skied for nearly 50 years and I have never had boots that didn't hurt. I got to the point where I thought painful boots were the price one had to pay to enjoy the sport of skiing. When it came time to buy new boots several years ago, I decided to try to get boots that really fit and, after doing some research, I determined that Olympic Bootworks was one of the better bootfitters in the North Lake Tahoe area. With the caveat that I did it during the summer when they have more time, I have to say that my bootfitting experience was terrific. Buck provided excellent service and he spent a couple of hours analyzing my feet and fitting my boots. My advice: figure out when OB isn't super busy and allocate a couple of hours for your fitting. You won't regret it. As for cost, I wasn't terribly concerned because IMO when it comes to boots it's not about getting the best deal in town, it's about getting boots that fit. That said, I got new top of the line boots for about $500, including the fitting, which based upon some comparison shopping is a market rate. I now have comfortable boots for the first time in my life. Whereas before I had to unbuckle them on every chair ride, now I can keep my boots buckled for a couple of hours and they are still OK. I didn't think it was possible, but it's true. The key thing Buck told me was "Your boots don't have to be buckled super tight to perform. What is more important is having a good fit / connection between your foot and the footbed & heel of the boot and the orthotic footbed makes that possible." And you know what? He's right! In sum, I was very pleased with my experience at OB. More importantly, I am very happy with my boots which enables me to get more enjoyment out of skiing. read more

Buck and his team at Olympic Bootworks are only concerned with one thing: getting you comfortable in your ski boots while maximizing performance. Prior to Buck establishing OBW, I had the pleasure of discussing my foot problems with Buck. You see, I was scheduled for surgery on my right foot due to an overgrown something or another (Buck has the medical description) ...anyway, Buck was convinced that his approach to customizing my boots would eliminate the need for surgery. Needless to say, I skeptically took him up on his offer. That was about 10 years ago and I just had my second fitting done at his new shop Olympic Bootworks--- Buck's new and masterful approach to boot fitting is so far beyond anything on the market and so over due it is astounding. I now stop by his shop after a day of skiing Squaw just to say hi and a deep and sincere THANK YOU for your dedicated art...you are a master! Thank you Buck and the entire OBW team. Keep doing what you do! (and NO, I never had that surgery thanks to Buck Brown's work) You ROCK! read more

Only one run into my ski weekend, I couldn't take it anymore in my terrible rental boots. Some searching on Yelp and the Internet...all signs pointed to Olympic Bootworks. I was thrilled when I arrived that Buck was available to help me himself (after reading about him on here - he seems legendary). He definitely knows his stuff. After quickly looking at me, he correctly identified that I have really narrow feet, a tendency to roll inwards, and my right foot is longer than the left...and then he came back with a specific model of boot (standard Technica) that he thought would work best for my feet. I did get his custom foot beds, which just seem like a good idea in general bc the standard piece of foam they put n boots does nothing for you. Im pretty sure that what he charged me $180 for wold have been $500 elsewhere. The boots themselves were the standard price you would pay at REI or even internet retailers - and $200 less than what other resort shops charge. And he didn't try to sell me custom liners or any other expensive add ons. He was extremely knowledgable about feet, skiing, and boots...and made me 100% comfortable about the investment I was making in equipment. After skiing on the boots the last two days, I am thrilled with the purchase and service I received. read more

My buddy and I took a trip to Tahoe. We both had boots that were less than a year old and were having some issues with pain, stability, and circulation. We found Buck's shop while looking for some rentals. We started talking to Buck about footbeds and how they could increase both comfort and performance. Buck took a ton of measurements, and he stayed after closing so we could have our inserts the next morning. The results? My buddy was completely smitten. Comfort and performance were much improved. As for me, the comfort factor was very obvious after the first run. I did, however, have some stability issues as the trip went on. I came back to see Buck, told him what I was experiencing, and he did some effective tweaks to the boots that afternoon. He's a pro, and really wants you to be as excited as he is about his products and services. I think you will be. Also, to echo what another yelper mentioned...the shop is awesome. We hung out on the sofa during the boot tweaks, had some great coffee, and talked to some of the locals. Good times! Thanks Buck and Staff for a great experience! read more

I heard about Buck from several avid skiers and went to get fitted for my new boots before the season started this year. I'll admit, I was a little disappointed when I didn't get Buck for my fitting and instead worked with Bobbi. I had no reason for concern. Bobbi is GREAT! She measured my feet, put me in a variety of boots, looked inside with a flashlight and got me into an amazing boot. Next she fitted me for my custom foot liner. I waited to write my review until I'd skied seven days. I love my new boots! No hot spots and they fit perfectly. I also didn't pay an arm and a leg for them. Thank you, Bobbi! I love my new boots! read more

Awesome experience for a first time boot buyer Buck, the owner, was first class in every way. I had not purchased serious ski boots in my life and I decided to go all in with customer liners and foot beds. I got a new pair of boots this year and thought I needed some custom work so I went to Olympic Bootworks. I knew Buck from his old shop on the summit but my review is not biased in any way because of this. He had me talk to Doug because like me he is a telemarker. I explained my symptoms and told him what I thought I needed based on custom work that was done to my previous boots. Doug convinced me that he could fix my problems with new footbeds. I already had custom footbeds from another company and I thought I could get a couple more years out of them. Their philosophy regarding footbeds was very interesting but I was hesitant because I didn't think that I needed new footbeds. Boy was I wrong. Their footbeds are the most supportive ones that I've ever used and Doug fixed all my problems without having to customize my boot shells. The shop has a comfy feeling to it also. If you happen to go when it is busy you will be greeted with a nice lounge like waiting area and offered a bottled water, coffee or beer and TV while you wait for your turn. This is the fourth brand of footbeds that I've used in the last twenty years and I ski around fifty days per year. Hopefully my review will help you make your decision. read more

Thinking that my boot shells and liners/ orthotics were in need of replacement, I visited Buck at Olympic Bootworks for a second opinion. After a few seasons, my trusty boots were packing out and feeling sloppy. A number of my local friends pointed me to this boot shop in Squaw Valley. Buck was very courteous and professional. His recommendation was to keep the boot shells and insert new liners and orthotics. We went this route and I have no regrets - my boots feel "light and lively". It's been a drier season (to date) but so far so good skiing on limited terrain. I would highly recommend Olympic Bootworks,...and their coffee is amazing. A couple of seasons ago I took my Lange boots in as they were pinching inside my arch. They told me to take a seat and grab a beer. So I did. And another. When it was my turn they heated my boots and punched them out. I got through a couple more seasons with them until this last weekend. They punched them out for free since I was waiting for a while. They were so cool that I promised to give them my business for new boots when I was ready! So this is the year! I came in two weeks ago, told them that same story and said, "Here I am! I promised." They quickly set me up with Bobbi and she started with the custom heel loc inserts. She said my foot has probably changed from a Lange fit to something else. I tried on a Lange and then a technica. The technica fit perfectly and had the features I was looking for. It's an AT hybrid boot. The next weekend I was back up to pay them off and go rip! At first I had some discomfort but after a short break in day they fit like a glove now! Long story short, they are the shit!! Do yourself a favor and go with the best boot fitters in the business! What a great experience! This time I had coffee though! Ha! Thank you guys again and I'm stoked to give this review!! read more

I am ecstatic over the boot adjustment I just got at Boot Works. I have made six trips two other boot shops...each time they were a bit better, but I still had a lot of pain. Eric spent an incredible amount of time adjusting my boots. After skiing on them today my feet are the happiest they have been in 20 years. I just returned for a minor tweak that should make them even better. Eric easily spent 5-10 times as long on my boots as other shops. I'm not saying the others were bad characters...just that this shop was fantastic. I thought e charges were quite reasonable in view of the amount of time spent. read more

Buck made me new footbeds and made me feel good about my decision to hold onto my current boots for one more year. He'll encourage you to try new things, but isn't a pushy salesman. Very welcoming environment and a great location for Squaw skiers. When I get new boots next year, I'll definitely go back to Olympic Bootworks. This is the most outstanding boot shop you will ever find. Buck and his staff are expert skiers and boot fitters, and these guys know more about boots than any other boot shop staff anywhere, period. I was fitted for my boots by Doug, a former member of the US Ski Team and a professional ski coach. He carefully molded my boots, made custom liners, and spend a great deal of time making 100% sure the boots fit me perfectly. I had some questions about the boots and I came back to the store the next day. He grabbed his skis and we went up the mountain, where I got a free, on-the-mountain assessment of my boot fit. I was absolutely stunned at this amazing level of customer service--you just don't see that these days. On top of spending several hours with me and even more time working on my boots, the staff was friendly and cheerful. They even offer complimentary coffee and beer for their customers!
