Background: Ski boots on my feet were potentially the 5th level of hell. While working with a local ski shop in the South Bay Area, I thought I had settled on some boots that would work. I eventually winced my way through 2 ski trips over the last 2 years (while stopping at random ski shops through the trip, hoping for a cure) and decided that enough was enough. This past summer, I decided to start budgeting for a new boot / insole / liner setup. I did my research and found incredible things to be said about Olympic Bootworks.
Fast forward to this winter: While living in the Bay Area, it's hard to get up to Tahoe to have a good feedback loop for well fitted boots. I ended up using the three of my allotted Mountain Collective days for day trips up to Squaw and a visit to Olympic Bootworks. The first day, I brought in a pair of new boots in which I thought would be a better fit than my "old" ones. While stupidly forgetting to bring my "old" pair, and bringing in my "new" pair, Jason spoke to me in an expertise that nobody had yet to have. He was able to accurately describe the pains I was having, while just assessing my foot / ankle, and knowing nothing more. He told me to return the "new" boots, come back with the "old" ones, and get settled on molding the HeelLoc insole then.
A week later, I was back up in Squaw on another day trip and dropped in with my old boots at opening. The crew there got me setup on a ZipFit liner (old one was packed out), and had it heat molded, while the insoles were trimmed to fit. This took a long time as they were busy in there but I made it onto the hill around 1PM (some of the time was also getting setup on some new skis...oops). After skiing from 1PM to the end of the day, my feet were actually killing me! I was really really bummed and had hoped for so much more.
I headed straight into Olympic Bootworks after the chairs were done spinning and it was even more slammed! However, I queued up, grabbed a complimentary beer, plopped on the couch, and waited my turn. They acknowledged my return (thanks guys!), and started to get to work on my boots again. After having another tough time in discussing what I was feeling, Buck and his crew patiently listened, and assured me they would figure it out. A grind here, and a sole spacer there, and it was already past their closing time! While the shop was getting wrapped up to close, Buck and his team were still incredibly hospitable to my needs, but I would have to leave back to the Bay Area, and come back up again later to see if it worked.
3 weeks later, I was finally able to get another day trip scheduled to Tahoe. A good 24" accumulation over the last 2 nights, and the skiing was looking to be promising. I got up on the hill and with the first 2 runs, my feet were achy. While being bummed again, I decided to be patient with the boots and see if they'd settle in a bit. I would unbuckle for the first 3 runs of the day while on the lifts / lines, but as the run and the day progressed, I'd end up tightening the boots more and more and never unbuckle them! Finally, in the clear!
Fast forward to today, and I just wrapped up a great 9 day ski trip through Jackson and SLC, and happily would love to report that my feet feel fantastic. I cannot believe that my feet feel the way they do now, and I'm happier than ever about how skiing feels, and the lack of feet pain I have now! I even had them buckled, and on for over 9 hours while taking bus shuttles, in bound hikes, and some post-ski beverages (no longer masochistic!). I cannot thank the team enough for their time, work, and effort. Buck and his team are so considerate of every individual, and incredibly competent and knowledgeable. I know exactly where I'll be going when it's time again for anything ski boot related! Well worth the drive, time, and cost to get dialed in! Thank you guys! read more
