We had a great experience. We got three quotes for my dad's cottage, and I originally assumed Olson's would be the most expensive because they were the most reputable of the companies we considered. In fact their quote was in the middle, close to the lowest bid, and they included the option to resurface the stucco for a reasonable additional price. Prior to their job, the house had messed up stucco and very old peeling paint -now the exterior looks close to perfect. Olson was also easy to communicate with, and tactfully accommodated my dad's idiosyncratic requests about prepping technique. They exactly matched the trim color to the new windows, and were able to start and finish within a couple weeks of providing their original quote. We would definitely use them again. read more

As most people these days seem quite interested in keywords, I have three for Myron Olson and his company, Olson's Painting: integrity, expertise, professionalism. As a small business owner, I believe others in the trade would do well to study this company. It represents the antithesis of what I have generally encountered in construction, home repair and maintenance. It has been many years since I had my home painted and my extremely large decking sealed. In fact, the last paint job marked the conclusion of major repairs following the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989. Obviously, the wooden structure was clearly in need. As I knew that this project would be costly, I did not enter into it with abandon. I poured over reviews on Angies's List, Yelp and other sources as well as asking just about any local homeowner I know. Then came the inquiry calls and emails to painting contractors. Wow, what a mixed bag showed up despite high marks from reviewers! My initial contact with Myron Olson, the owner, was very promising. His demeanor and concise correspondence set him aside from perhaps two other painting contractors. One had been equally positive, including his visit. Then he ignored my emails and phone calls. I suppose he didn't need the work. Myron came over promptly and assessed the situation. His explanation of my home's condition (not as bad as I thought) and the processes that would be necessary to restore it to its original condition were thorough and complete. No other contractor provided such details. Then I held my breath, waiting for the estimate. Frankly, I was pretty frightened that it would be far more than the others. What a surprise! Mr. Olson's bid came in right in the middle. Considering the extent of work and the quality of materials that he proposed, in fact it calculated out to be the lowest. The success of a paint job depends most of all upon preparation of surfaces. This is where Omar's crew hit it out of the park. All of the extensive prep work was done completely respectful of my organic gardens and even my working beehive. Wood was smoothed, filled, every metal surface rustproofed, and more, even before the pre-primer was applied. The older redwood deck was cleaned respectfully without raising the grain. Paint application, and I'm talking pre-primer, tinted primer, and two coats of exterior paint, was done carefully and the resulting finish is excellent. Myron and I explored deck sealer stains together and I opted for an environmentally sound product that the crew had not done before. There were a few blips along the way, but the resulting deck is better than I had anticipated. In addition, some boards were replaced on the railing in an excellent manner. Myron Olson genuinely cares about the quality of work, the customer's state of mind, and his crew of regulars. Never before have I encountered an owner/boss who is more calm, collected, and engaged in the project. How often do you see a company owner get down on his hands and knees in serious summer heat with a bucket and scrub-brush? I'm very critical and concerned about the outcome of services provided to my Victorian home in Alameda; therefore, I interviewed several highly recommended local painters. I chose Olson's Painting...and I've been thanking my good fortune ever since! I was incredible happy with the initial interview with Myron (owner) and with his detailed bid, clear recommendations and follow-up. I have owned multiple units and I found Myron to be experienced in the thorough preparation and processes with readying the exterior surfaces of my historical home. Olson's Painting just finished painting our house; it's been transformed and looks fantastic! I got three bids on the job and they were all in the same price range, but Myron went the extra step to point out things they'd fix for us before they started painting: strip the caulking between the wood siding (Myron said this would trapped moisture in the wood), cut off a leftover piece of conduit and patch the hole, remove our old house numbers, and patch some gorged wood in the back. Olson's literally spent 75% of the time prepping the house to paint, and then the other 25% painting. This is the sign of quality work done right in my opinion. They also cleaned up their work each day before they left--even after I told them not to bother if it saved them time. These guys are true professionals. Myron was very clear & courteous in explaining and recommending options. His quotation was in the middle of the several quotations I got, but, unlike some of the others, he had specified multiple coats of top-grade paint in addition to detailed treatments for window frames, trim, stucco, etc. The crew, Omar supervising, were also courteous, performed the work on time, did excellent daily clean-up. It is located in an urban forest with a great deal of greenery among the trees on a site with a creek cascading through a deep ravine which runs through the middle...a place lovely to look at and live in, but a real headache to paint. Olson's foreman and crew went above and beyond their contract in delivering exemplary service. A few of many examples are: Completing the job timely by working Saturdays to make up time lost to a number of delays due to rain; Identifying areas of dry rot for repair before painting affected structures; Remediating rust from fencing and other metal surfaces before painting; Removing old paint at the request of several homeowners (at no cost) upon completion of the job. Hired Olson's Painting for exterior painting of my 3 story 1905 redwood siding home. Home not painted for 9 years so needed extensive prep, including two areas of dry rotted siding that needed to be replaced. Scaffolding was needed for 2 sides of the house, power washing was done in advance to allow max time for drying, lead abatement procedures were followed, thorough prep was performed - scraping, sanding, vacuuming before a full coat of tinted primer was applied. The final painting was 2 full coats on the body and trim with a 3rd accent color applied in selected areas. Superlative is the best word to describe the execution of this project from start to finish! I was anxious about engaging a company that would provide a long-lasting, quality job. Myron Olson was most obliging in supplying references for jobs that had been completed 4 to 6 years before. All folks contacted responded enthusiastically and the homes we inspected were in beautiful condition. The experience we had with Myron Olson and his crew confirms that of others. Myron was always cordial, responsive to our questions and concerns, and immediately in contact with the foreman of the crew when something came up. He was quite creative about getting a color match from a house I had admired for years. The match was perfect. The 5 man crew worked energetically for 14 long days. They always arrived on time, were careful to begin the noisy work during prep after 8 am, always cleaned up completely each evening, were courteous, friendly and always helpful with insuring our ease of coming and going. The foreman of the crew took great pride in his work and his attitude carried over to his entire crew. The prep work was quite arduous and extensive and took place during one of our fall heat waves with temperatures up to 90. None of this slowed the crew down. Great care was given to protecting all areas during power washing, prepping and painting. The power wash crew responded to our concerns about possible water leaking and applied plastic sheeting where necessary. The painting crew used tape and plastic sheeting to protect the roof and any area not being painted. There was no stray paint on the roof, windows or walkways when the job was finished. The carpentry work was skillfully executed so as not to reveal that siding replacement had been done. Attention was given to every detail as the work came to an end - all hardware removed for painting was replaced, items moved so work equipment and materials could be stored during the project were returned to their original places, and work areas where equipment was stored overnight were left cleaner than when they began. Because there wasn't room for all their ladders inside the basement these were stored in the back yard. The yard was a bit distressed by the end of the project, but there was little that could be done about this. I couldn't be more enthusiastic about the work ethic and quality of work of Olson's Painting. The cost of the job was highly competitive and worth every penny. Checked Olson's Star rating and it's already a 5 so I almost didn't write this review. (I'm not a "Yelper') Writing it for 2 reasons. 1st they did a fantastic job on my house and 2nd the revieww below that indicated that they lacked attention to details couldn't be further from tmy experience. I received 3 bids from local painters and untimately went Olson's not based on price (they were not the cheapest) but because I could tell from the estimate and walking the property with Myron that the scope and detail of their work was going to be very through. Prep work was outstanding. I have a tool shed attached to my detached garage that looks like it barely survived WWII. Needed to be torn town so didn't give it much thought. To my surprise I came home and found that they got it looking like new! Now I feel like I have to get a new lawn mower and tools just to put in my brand new shed! I think I was fairly prepared for the work having picked out my colors (stolen with permission for a neighbor around the corner) but couldn't visualize small details like whether to use the accent or trim color on railings etc. Myron's team worked patiently with me and my partner throughout the project and often times painted both colors on so that we could look at it for a day in order to decide. Every day I'd leave for work at 8 am and the the crew was already started and I'd return at 5:30-6 and they'd still be working. The rooms I needed done were difficult but with Olson's abilitys to texturize....this really helped fix my poor quality walls. I was looking for a local painting company in Alameda to do some dry rot repair work on my home in the Harbor Bay area. I received several bids and found that Olson's Painting was half the price of some of the bids I received. Based on the recommendations of neighbors who had also hired Olson's Painting and after talking with Myron, the owner who I found to be reasonable and assuring, I hired them and I am glad I did. His crew consisted of Julio and Antonio, two careful, considerate and hard working individuals who put in 3 long days to get the job done. They even noticed some siding that needed touching up and cracks that needed caulking and did that for me without adding to the bid. They were able to match the existing paint perfectly and even left me with leftover paint that I could keep for future touchups. Olson's painted my house to prepare it for sale. They did interior and exterior including the basement, garage, the porch and even retaining walls, railings and fences. The work was outstanding and extremely professional. You know how some paint jobs look good from a distance, but not so much up close? Not an issue with these guys. For my job they spent about twice as long prepping and repairing everything than they did actually painting. So when it was done it looked downright smooth. The only negative I will offer is that Myron isn't always reachable by phone during business hours. I imagine he might be out estimating. But he usually returns calls within 24 hours, and the work and service is such high quality I still give them 5 stars. Highly recommended. read more

Everything went just great. The crew prepared and painted the entire outside of the house(front, back and sides) . This included power washing, sanding, priming, and two coats of paint. They repaired dryrot in some sections of the siding as necessary. They also repaired damaged stucco under my sunroom. They sanded and re-stained the front door and a small wooden deck. Myron is so easy to work with. He makes you feel completely comfortable. There's no problem asking any questions or requesting this or that be done. He makes suggestions along the way which I found helpful. For instance he suggested we re-stain the front door as part of the job, which never even occurred to me. It looks great. The crew did a superlative job. They arrived on time and were always so polite and did a complete clean up every day. They really work hard. If they had a question about something they would check with me and not just assume. I appreciated that. The thoroughness of the prep work was really impressive. They removed old shutters and window boxes on the front of the house after we discussed and decided they weren't worth repairing. Every little nook and cranny was attended to and properly scraped and sanded. They replaced some cracked window glass along the way and checked that my rain gutter was in good working order. They sealed some exposed areas under my sunroom with concrete (which is not really painting and they did a great job). The job took exactly as long as Myron said it would (2 weeks) and they started right away. I'm a happy camper and the house looks just wonderful. I selected Olson to paint the exterior of my 1937 bungalow because the house had not had a proper prep and paint job in decades and I wanted a contractor that would do all the correct preparation before applying final color. Myron Olson made a convincing case that his crew would meet my expectations and that proved correct. The crew scrapped, sanded, feathered, filled/primed/filled/primed, and finally cauked until the envelope of the house was sealed, fair, and to my eye, flawless, before application of the final color coats, which were impecably applied. Other notable features of my experience: the crew was on-time every day and worked long days to meet the scheduled completion date; thorough collection of paint scrapings and dust (vacume-equiped power sanders, crew wearing ventilators, plastic tarps taped to foundation and disposed daily); excellent daily job site management; good advice from Myron re paint finish options. Myron and his crew painted my house with redwood siding years ago. They used lead safe practices (scraping, only wet sanding, plastic drop cloth every day) which makes the job much harder. It took some reminding to get his guys to do it that way, but once they got it, they were great. The job took longer than he expected, but he kept his price about half of what 3 other painters quoted. They spent lots of time getting everything right, renewing my 20+ year old chipping paint job. They even came back to fix the few things that went wrong (the job was done in the winter and we got unlucky with a misty day). Myron's easy to work with and keeps his word. Now the house still looks great, we get complements on it. I will definitely be calling him when it comes time to paint again. But thanks to the good job they did, that time won't be too soon. read more

I cannot say enough good things about Olson's Painting. I happened to see a house he painted in Alameda and fortunately for me, his sign was still there so I could find him. I live in a 4-unit condo in a Victorian House in San Francisco with six colors. Our HOA agreed it was time to repaint our house, and with a number of different bids and discussions with painters, Myron clearly came out as the best man for the job. Myron worked with our budget. He anticipated issues we would face (he was absolutely spot on) and made good suggestions. His crew found and repaired various areas of dry rot and damaged spots on the house. I live in the North Hills of Oakland. I was given a recommendation for Olson's Painting from a a friend in Alameda. She is a decorator and has discriminating standards. We received a bid from Myron and had 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a Master walk in closet painted. The crew was very courteous, prompt and skillful.
