Still, I didn't automatically choose him again. I actually interviewed about half a dozen companies, but ultimately chose Jay for this second time, not only because of the cost, but because of his robust experience and track record -- and I'm glad I did. I contacted Jay Lee of Shine Painting to paint the exterior of my home in Fremont. Jay was easy to work with. He came by to do an estimate and arrived on time. He explained what Shine Painting would do and it sounded great. I had some plants that needed to be trimmed away from the house and Jay even sent me a name of a gardener that he said might be helpful. I had found another gardener in the meantime and got the plants trimmed. Jay sent over a bid the next day. It was the most reasonable bid I received ... not the highest or too low to be realistic. I accepted the bid and Jay gave me a start date a couple weeks later. On the day the job was scheduled Miguel (the foreman) and Geovani showed up on time at 8:00 AM. Miguel was very friendly and the team got right to work. They covered a lot of ground very quickly. Miguel asked me if I wanted my doors to be painted (3 exterior doors and the garage door). I didn't really think it would be needed, but after seeing what the house looked like after it was painted the doors all looked dirty. Jay was very helpful and the team went ahead and painted the doors too. Miguel was awesome and the team did a great job. I hate giving mediocre reviews to companies with good people working for it. they are good people and the house looks GREAT...they are just sloppy. first, i got a quote from Jay about 2 months ago. very nice guy who was very organized and communicated very very well. professional emails. professional quote. what brought me to them was their diamond certification (which i realize is meaningless designation) and high yelp score. no word of mouth though. price was about 3-4 grand more than the next quote I got. but decided, let me take their professionalism and diamond rating as a factor and spend a bit more for better results and not having to worry... well.... the job took 5 full days (3800 square foot 2 story house). about 3-4 people working per day with the foreman being Jiin. again. nice guys. efficient. where the stars come off has to do with their lack of attention to detail, overall sloppiness. paint drippings...lines not being straight...window vinyl not being taped properly with paint bleeding through. all the things that a non professional would do. the house looks great but the lack of detail relative to the price you pay, it pretty apparent. our new paver driveway had at least 8 drops of paint and there were 3 areas with overspray. i don't know why they did such little prep work. why not cover the pavers better? i pointed this out after the job was done and the foreman did come back within 30 mins (again they are very good people. jay and Jiin are sweet and well meaning people) which was very nice of him and he spent about 30 mins scrubbing the paint off with water and a brush. it came off about 70% or so but still, the idea that they didn't even notice it and or that it happened in the first place- sloppy work for a professional company. please be aware of it and if you've already hired them. please ask that they cover everything above and beyond what they are going and stay on top of them. literally meet them daily and ask them to fix mistakes on the spot, bc they likely won't notice or maybe even care. see pics to see what i mean read more

All Yelp readers should not ignore the middling to bad reviews posted about Shine Painting. I thought I could trust the many positive Yelp reviews about this company's service because their high overall score and solid review count, and let me tell you - that was a huge costly lesson. Do not trust I agree with John D.'s review from back 11/2/24 that the people seem to work hard, but the work is still sloppy in terms of finish and mediocre overall. Sadly Shine's quote wasn't even that competitive to the other quotes I received from other companies before I chose them. If you communicate the quality issues with them before the touchup, Shine Painting will come up with different reasons to deflect by saying their crew only applies paint to the wall or touch up paint can cover up the issues. I had 4 different painting and general contractor companies subsequently looking at Shine Painting's work in person. They all unanimously pointed out even fundamental quality issues and process gaps I didn't know even myself. According to the other companies, they skipped basic prepping, which is typically the critical time-consuming step ensure proper quality finish. Our job didn't even require them to rush! Unfortunately even their follow-up responses were unhelpful. The 4 other companies warned me about how they might respond to cover up their issues too by refusing to acknowledge that the whole work needed to be redone. Sadly, the 4 companies were proven correct. We had to retain another company to properly prep and redo the entire interior after Shine Painting. If you want a reliable team who can high quality work with zero complications, then go with a different company. read more

Hired for an exterior painting job. Simon himself is knowledgeable and had good recommendations and color matching. The actual painting quality was of inconsistent quality, particularly on the siding. The stucco and trim were done well. The siding was painted poorly in some sections (ok in others). Sections where the paint had peeled away were pulled free by hand and painted over with no surface preparation, leaving it cratered and uneven in sections. The front door was damaged with a pressure washer, splintering the wood. Note the door was not part of the job, this was the result of not taking care when pressure washing the siding. I had to call them back to sand and restain the door as well. Simon is a great salesman but unfortunately the quality of the work and attention to detail was inconsistent. Perhaps once the quality issues were apparent Simon could have made an effort to come on site to check the work himself and/or assigned a different crew. read more

I had my exterior house painted this past week by Shine Painting and it was an amazing, stress-free experience from start to finish. Jay Lee (the owner) was an absolute pleasure to work with. His initial proposal/quote was accompanied by a full page of references, liability insurance and a copy of his state contractors license. I was seeking estimates for my 2000 sq ft house, and from the start Simon Shin has been incredibly professional.
