What do I love about Olley's? Let me count the ways. OK, budding food business owners here's a lesson to learn: supreme belief in yourself supported by fresh, uncomplicated food is always going to put you in Gold medal position. I've been frequenting this place since it initially opened and it never falters in either its offering or the service of its staff. Ok, so it's not especially cheap, that's to say, you're not going to get much change out of £20 for fish and chips and drinks for two takeway, but it is memorable. You see, I'm like you, I don't mind paying for quality when it's presented to me as good soul food is hard to come by. ing. In truth, such fare isn't especially hard to present: catch and cook some fresh fish, grow then cook tasty potatoes and throw in some cheeky mushy peas for that trad London experience. How hard can that be? You'll be surprised how many similar establishments royally foul this up. Its popularity in recent years has prompted the opening of a sit-down restaurant next door, however, both the sit-down and takeaway venues offer full and diverse menus. They're obviously doing something right. Best time to go in my opinion is that surreal quiet time between school drop-off and pick-up. Make sure you take a lazy stroll through leafy Brockwell Park and build up that appetite. Go on, you deserve it. Olley's wins because it's unashamed in its celebration of itself. I've eaten one too many portions of fish and chips of sub-par quality, especially the batter, and the oil used for frying. Worse is when it's served piping hot, and you get that initial fried and crunch rush, but then within a minute or so you're faced with a soggy, greasy, cold mess of dubious value. That's never the case at Olley's! They serve high quality fish, well battered, and perfectly fried. And the chips are to die for! They also have more than just your standard cod and haddock choices available. Some dishes are named after famous UK personalities (James Nesbitt, Cilla Black) and last time I went they also had non-fish specials on offer. We came here to try out their healthy option. Their fish can be ordered deep fried but also streamed or grilled. We opted for a steamed sole and a grilled salmon with a few veggie sides. The sole was steamed with ginger and scallions but was a long way off from the Chinese variants I'd had before. It was a bit on the bland side. The grilled salmon was fine. Both pieces of fish were on the small side though, given how expensive they were. Veggie sides were steamed and grilled veg. Again nothing too exciting but it ticked the boxes. After a long day at work, I grabbed some good old fish and chips here this week. I ordered the standard cod and chips and wasn't disappointed! The food was great and really well prepared. With fish and chips theres such a fine line, either exceptional or awful. This experience was of the exceptional nature. I also had mushy peas with my meal which was also very good. Last night (Friday night) after a long week at work I decided to treat myself to a fish and chips from Olley's as I knew they have a great reputation In South London. Another reason is that I have ordered on one occasion an it was delicious. However last night was a real disappointment. The dish arrived quickly yet it was warm going cold. In its sorry box was a cod, chips and a lonely lemon wedge. No mayo, tartare sauce and it was flavourless. All this for 23£ !!!! For this price one can order a lovely main course in a posh restaurant or even 2 courses with ambience and service. Had a coeliac friend coming to visit and figured that if she was going to come to London, she had to try Fish and Chips. After a bit of research I decided the trek out to Olley's on Tuesday would be worth the risk since it was one of only two places I could find that would serve gluten-free batter on that evening. Needless to say, I was very impressed. So much so, that I've made this my first ever yelp review. The restaurant is hidden away and offers a very beautiful wooden dining area and warm atmosphere. The staff are all very kind and were very helpful to my friend, pointing out what was okay for her to eat and what wasn't. The fish and chips itself lived up to expectations. A generous portion and incredible quality. Being fine with gluten myself, I still found their gluten-free batter to be flavourful and crispy, with the chips being an excellent compliment. A wonderful restaurant that allows even coeliac's the opportunity to taste the well deserved title of "best fish and chips in town" according to my books. Just about as 'fish friendly' as you can get in terms of their sustainability policy, meaning many of the fish are sourced from fisheries, which is important these days. The food delicious too and I've never been let down, and I visit frequently. They can be slow in the take away part but I've waited longer in other fish and chip shops in the area. The decor in the restaurant a little 'tired'. The staff are very friendly, and there's a low turnover which is always promising in a business. Lucky for me, one of my friends who was on this trip grew up in London and knew exactly where to go. She took us to Olley's for the true fish and chips experience. Apparently, years ago, Olley's was more of a to-go food stand where you ordered and got fish and chips wrapped to go in a newspaper. Now, you have the option of sitting down and eating your meal with a beer in tow (beer makes everything better!). My fish and chips were amazing. Being vegan I'd never paid a whole lot of attention to Olleys on my daily jaunts past it to and from home. However, after a lovely glass of red round a friend's house last Saturday night the lure of chip shop chips was too much for me and I ventured in. The takeaway part is definitely on a different level to your average greasy chippy, so that was nice, and I was pleased to discover they also sell wine to take home. You know how it is after one glass - more is necessary! - so I added a bottle of Pinot something-or-other to my order. I didn't think it was too pricey at £6. As a girl who has recently started referring to herself as a lady (it's an age thing), imagine my surprise when I was asked to present photo ID! In retrospect I suppose ordering some chips then saying Oh, and can I get wine as well please might have looked a bit suss, and being endowed with healthy skin has got me in to this sort of trouble before. The funny thing was that instead of indignation, I felt embarassment - almost as though I was a naughty teen trying it on in a shop and not a twenty-something who rents her own flat, pays for contents insurance and enjoys other such boring adult pursuits. I have an ISA, for crying out loud! Thankfully the man in charge came to my rescue, pooh-poohing the serving girl's protestations that I looked too young. I look 17, really? In my shocked, vaguely inebriated state I made some show of pointing out one or two wrinkles on my face to the woman, now suddenly indignant that she still didn't believe I was [well] over 18. We hadn't planned to go to Olleys but just wandered past when hungry and decided to give it a try. The service is great, before our starters turned up we got given little fishcakes to try. This wasn't because our starters were late, in fact the whole meal was served promptly. The range of fish is interesting, though there is no advice on how ethically the fish is sourced The food was amazing but not really worth the prize. It's about £12-15 for a piece of fish, and that doesn't include chips, mushy peas, potatoes etc that's all about £2-3 extra. A bit expensive, but fantastic. The fish comes in any type of form, with dozens of different fish to choose from. Chips are chunky, the tartare sauce and mushy peas are delightfully home-made, and they serve drinks and alcohol too. Could be a bit cheaper, but it really is the best fish and chip place in London. Olley's has about the best choice of fish suppers you can get - healthier options, including grilled fish, unusual fish varieties as well as the traditional cod and scampi. A portion of chips costs about £2 - the fish varies. Cod is about £6 a portion (cant remember the exact price). The shop is split into a takeaway section (the bit I go to) and a sit-down place. It all feels warm, clean and relaxed. A nice touch is that you get some free chips to keep you going if there's any kind of wait for the fish to cook. Ollie's is a respectable chippy. Ordered the chef's special of cod, chips & mushy peas and side order of calamari. Cod was a decent portion and fresh, batter was nicely seasoned and crisp. Chips were ok. Mushy peas were decent but would probably skip them next time. Calamari consisted of 5 medium sized rings for approx £7 which is not good value. Fish is ordered a la carte and chips are extra. Prices are considerably higher than other chippies, but not out of line for the quality of food provided. read more

Calling it a fish n' chip shop somewhat undersells what it actually is, which is an affordable gourmet fish and chip restaurant. Fish comes fried in batter or grilled and steamed. I plumped for the old favourite, cod and chips, though the range is as big as any other restaurant of its kind. Fish was excellent, chips likewise and it came with homemade tartare sauce. It lived up to the hype and the pride they take in their work is evident. If you can drop in at lunchtime, take advantage of the lunchtime special. Well worth the money. read more

The chef and back of house staff are phenomenal and so nice!! We visited twice in a week while on vacation. Small but comfortable very accommodating to children and actually gave out balloons which my daughter loved. The fish and chips are excellent well prepared and not over done. We were visiting London last week and made a point to come here for their gluten-free fish and chips dinner and we were not disappointed at all. I don't think we ever had gluten-free fish and chips that were this good. I even wondered if it was really gluten-free because the texture of the batter was do good and not doughy. The fish were fresh and the portion were quite generous. I tried the smashed peas. It was different and rich. All in all, it was a great dining experience! read more

Cod & chips is not that bad at all here. Trouble is not that bad isn't that good if there are at least 2 other chip shops in the area who do seaside quality fish & chips. for half the price. so i tried Olleys when my favourite local alternative was closed for the holidays, and had to wait 25 minutes for my dinner. A risk getting chips at 6 on Friday, but there was only one other person in there. I've never eaten in the restaurant, but from this experience that seems to be their priority, and I wouldn't recommend the takeaway at a busy time (or at all if you are able to get to any of the better shops in the area) read more

Went to olley's fish experience for a birthday lunch. Many options for how to have the fish, and it's big on sustainability which is great. Not so much there for vegetarians - (obviously it's a fish restaurant but it's handy to be able to go with fish eaters) there was a vegetable pie and mushy peas in a fried cake style. Had a side salad with jalapeños which was a little unusual. Everyone reported their fish and mussels to be very tasty. We were the only people there, but the service was really good. The waiter went out of his way to take group photos of us and also gave the birthday girl (31!) several balloons which was appreciated! Decor could do with an update. read more

This place has the look and feel of traditional fish restaurant. My boys love it but to be honest I can take it or leave it. Went to Olleys Fish & Chips on Monday and god, wasn't I suprised. The hubby offered to take me out for Fish and chips, so I assumed we were just going to a little chippy somewhere. When I got to Olleys, I was astounded. The decor is great, brilliant service, amazing food and had a brilliant night out. I loved the little coddie's and rock for the main course. Not really sure why people seem to rave about this place. I am still reeling from the scandalously over priced fish and chips take away I picked up a few hours ago. NINE pounds yes, NINE!! for fish and chips?!!!! Not only that, but despite ordering Cod, they obviously weren't happy that they were making enough money, so they charged me for Haddock which was even more expensive. The food was adequate, but really the kind of standard that I would expect from any half decent chippy (Of which London seems utterly devoid). The portion size was pretty poor too, I really would think for that money I'd have got the biggest fish I've ever seen, and enough chips to last a week. In fact unbelievably, it's actually cheaper to get fish and chips at Borough Market!! If you're hungry for it, then I'd hang on and get it from the market instead! The owners obviously have some delusion of grandeur, perhaps someone should tell them that this is an so-so southern suburb, not Mayfair! Having come from Leeds where I could get 2 bigger, better, nicer fish and chip portions for the same money I have to admit I was generally disappointed with Olley's. Crazily Leeds is about as far as you can possibly get from the Sea, whereas London is practically on the coast?! This is for the takeaway, I can only assume the restaurant charges even more?! The last time I visited was a couple months ago. My cousin and I went to Crystal Palace to see Usain Bolt do his thing.Then we were hungry and wfelt like fish and chips.I like Olleys because its a proper sit down restaurant. It has a nice atmosphere with cosy corners for couples as well as an upstairs eating area. The owner is friendly and attentive, the service is good. The fish and chips are delicious, try the calamari for starters - very nice. The mushy peas are just right. The dessert menu is very good - offering homenade traditional puddind=gs such as spotted dick, treacle tart and apple pie. There is also a delicious range of creamy ice creams available. It is a bit on the pricey side. Our meal for two came to £27 but that was on a special deal. read more
