    Fish n chips

Olley's has the best fish and chips in London! One of the things I wanted out of my first visit to London was to see how amazing fish and chips can be. Lucky for me, one of my friends who was on this trip grew up in London and knew exactly where to go. She took us to Olley's for the true fish and chips experience. Apparently, years ago, Olley's was more of a to-go food stand where you ordered and got fish and chips wrapped to go in a newspaper. Now, you have the option of sitting down and eating your meal with a beer in tow (beer makes everything better!). My fish and chips were amazing. The fish was fresh and tender and the batter was crispy. Delicious!

The chef and back of house staff are phenomenal and so nice!! We visited twice in a week while on vacation. Small but comfortable very accommodating to children and actually gave out balloons which my daughter loved. The fish and chips are excellent well prepared and not over done. Batter was flavorful as was the fish. Drinks of beer and wine available. Overall worth a visit and very reasonable for the money.

It was lunch time but I decided to order a regular portion since I wanted a larger fish. It was cooked fresh to order and I ordered for takeaway. The wait was fine considering fresh cook to order. I was asked if I wanted salt and vinegar and of course yes! I would say in general I enjoyed the fresh cod it was a lovely cut and cooked perfectly. I was surprised by a few things. I was served about one kg of chips. Way too many chips for one person. The chips had a nice flavor but seemed a bit mushy. Maybe a little undercooked? Only my chips got salt and vinegar which meant the fish stayed crispy for takeaway but it was also bland. Also I wasn't provided any tartar sauce. Maybe that needs to be ordered separately? Could have been a rookie mistake on my part. Was this the best in London? No but it could be. Serve half as many chips, put salt and vinegar on the fish as well as the chips, and ask the customer if he or she would like tartar sauce. Overall above average but not quite the best!

Last night, I got myself some post-surgery celebration chips - with cod, onion gravy and mushy peas. You know how you have to fast before surgery, even if it's minor? Well, by the time I got home at 8pm, I was famished. Kennedy's made it all ok. Kennedy's are WONDERFUL. Not only is the fish superbly white and fluffy, in a crisp, golden batter, and the chips fat and plentiful, but the service is efficient. Long live properly FAST food. The mushy peas were nothing to write home about (not bad, but not amazing like the fish and the chips). But the onion gravy? Om nom nom. I ended up stuffed after just half a plateful - I guess that comes from fasting all day. But leftover chips for breakfast? Thank you very much... :)

Before we get to the food let's talk about the people, a massive thing for me with small food holders is seeing the passion and love that goes into the food. No getting away from it here as these guys will "literally" blow you away with their warmth and friendliness and their love for the humble Glasgow salad. So the fries on three own are delicious. Take one of their amazing toppings into the equation and you have a whole new cuisine. These are chips but not as you know them. There is something for everyone from lamb and taziki to double Dutch (satay sauce SOOOOO GOOD) or just some lovely garlic mayo. Brixton is a foodie paradise in the making and these guys are right at the heart of it!

The steak was sliced up and of a perfect temperature, and the peppercorn sauce was so good that I would have happily drunk it as a soup - seriously, it's better peppercorn sauce than I've had in fairly expensive steak restaurants. Then as they brought the food to our table, the other lady rushed out with a piping bag asking if we wanted garlic sauce. A piping bag. When someone offers you garlic mayonnaise in a piping bag, you just say yes. Because that's home made garlic sauce and it'll be awesome, and in this case, I was not wrong! As for the fries, they're really quite good. They're cooked in rapeseed oil which reduced the calories and also with the skin on, which is varies the flavour in a good way. They're not the crunchiest chips I've ever had, but certainly the tastiest and I don't think crunchy would have worked at all well with the dish overall, so I was pleased to have the ones that they did. We ended up coming here because of #SecretBrixton, and I'm glad because otherwise I would never have come to Brixton let alone Hot Chip. So a big thanks to the organisers for that, and for Hot Chip for being involved. We got chatting with the two ladies working there and the combination of the quality food and frankly just how lovely there were makes this one of the easiest five stars I've ever given out. Would have had six if I could have shoehorned it in.
