We were stopping for gas across the street at the Shell station and I was hungry. I thought 'oh gawd, what am I going to get to eat around here?' I spied the Olive Pit sign and decided to walk over to check it out. It has a chain feeling to it, but the store part dedicated to all things Olive is pretty impressive in it's offerings. I had to eat first before checking out the store. I wasn't impressed at all with the menu but the girls were pretty helpful trying to figure out what I could eat. I ordered a salad with Chicken on it. It was overpriced and underwhelming. The store is likely a tourist trap judging by the prices, and sadly, I just don't have the palate for Olives, as much as I would love to. I keep trying them every once in a while, hoping to love them but I just can't seem to do it, darnit! now Olive oil --I am a fan of thee but Olive oil prices are way too dear for me here. As I've said before, I'm a sucker for advertiseing and all the billboards I saw every 4 miles got me thinking about the goodness of the Olive Pit. Also, one of my friends likes olives stuffed with jalapenos, so thought I might even find a good holiday gift. Alas, I found a place to pee stocked with salty, sundry olive items and less than stellar customer service. They have a sampling bar, but the items I wanted were behind the counter and you needed an attendees help. There was a guy right next to the sampling bar but he was busy checking people out. I totally understand that you have to attend to the people right there who need to be rung up, but it would've been nice if he'd have acknowledged me and said someone would be over or even take initiative to bring someone over himself in between customers. Someone finally came over when I was there with an older gentleman. She helped us both but gave me the shaft while focusing her attention on the other guy. While she just gave me an olive from the jars I asked about, she took time to ask the other guy what he was looking for and recommended other things for him to try. Not impressed. Also not impressed when I ordered a muffuletta sandwich. The woman taking my order asked me what bread I wanted and I was like, well, I'm not sure, what do you have. She named off a couple of types then told me that actually I could just read what they had on a sign near the register. Then it took a little while to make my sandwich. Once I was called up, they said that I could put on additional sauces and toppings from their topping/olive bar and that she'd wrap it up once I was done. Guess I finished sooner than she expected as she was working on another sandwich. Yet instead of taking 30 seconds to wrap my sandwich she just kept working on the other sandwiches until they were finished up. Somehow it didn't occur to her that me wanting my food to go might've been an indicator that I was in a hurry. Don't fall prey to the trap, just keep on driving. And if you really want to get some assortment of olives, just order online from their website instead to save your time and gas. read more

Yes, it's a tourist trap; no, the burger patties are nothing special; but we'd been figuring on Wendy's during a fast burn down I-5, and this was an improvement. It's a bit startling to order a BLT, and get a plate with only bread and bacon --- but then you go over to the toppings bar, and it starts to make more sense. The hazelnut shake is very sweet. We stop by here on every California road trip. They always have a huge selection of olives for sampling and don't be shy about asking to try something even if they don't have it out. The sampling area can get a little tight if ba bunch of people show up at the same time but that's no biggie. Price wise, it's quite reasonable for the quality (a 10 ounce jar usually costs about $5.50). They have a crazy selection too. Can't decide between garlic and almond stuffed? You don't have to because they have olives stuffed with both! Keep in mind there are some subtle variations as well such as olives packed in brine versus packed in water (different coloured lids). read more

Love this place! Amazing selection of olives, olive oils, vinegars. California and peach balsamic are my faves. They also have a variety of canned (jars) food from jellies to peppers, even asparagus. Other gourmet foodstuffs like nuts, candy, $5 organic chocolate bars and sundries including jelly belly soda and chai cola. We always stop here on our way up/down the 5 fwy. Staff is friendly. We always stop at the Olive Pit when we are on a driving vacation in Northern California. Make sure you taste the many variations of marinated olives offered at the tasting bar. Sometimes I am disappointed with the fairly neutral olive "curing process" resulting in neutral flavors exhibited in many styles of olives for sale. But then again, I usually can find two or three styles I really like and cannot find in grocery stores. read more

This review is for the cafe. Yes it's hard to run a restaurant during the pandemic, but the food quality was around the same level as airplane food. Burger was assembled with way too much mustard so it was really messy and hard to eat. Meat seemed like recently defrosted patty. Grilled cheese was barely grilled at all - one side was, a little bit, and they did not seem to butter the outside of the bread so there was no crustiness to the outer part like normal grilled cheese. The shop looks cute but I cannot recommend the cafe food at all. Wendy's has much better burgers than this place, and cheaper prices. read more

Wow this place is so generic and boring we were in and out in less than five minutes. Your local local grocer can get you the same kind of olives - nothing special. You are way better off at Whole Foods. It's a total tourist trap and they over hype themselves as some mecca of olives but it's the only olive-y thing in the town (that we could see) and it is SO BLAH! I've been stopping here for years while driving to Lassen. It's a cute little roadside diner/store with a nice outdoor seating area especially if you're traveling with a dog. While sitting outside in the 100+ heat, it's a perfect time to try one of their delicious frosty shakes. They're so good and offer an extensive variety of flavors. The food was okay, I ordered the plain burger but the condiments section topped it off well. This last trip I bought the cream cheese stuffed olives. They are SO good! I want to go back and get more! I also bought my usual blue cheese stuffed olives as well... BUT the main reason for stopping here is their balsamic vinegar selection. My favorites are the blueberry, fig and peach balsamic vinegars. They are the BEST on salads, for dipping bread, etc. and it's so hard to find the blueberry and peach flavors anywhere else so I stock up. They also have a candy and nut section for a little treat on the long drive home. It's worth a stop just to get out of the car, stretch, grab an icy shake and get some olives and vinegar to bring home. read more

My fiance and I were driving the I-5 and we kept seeing the billboards for this place. We were also told by the aldy at the hotel we stayed in Redding. That corning is the olive capital of the state or the nation? not sure which one. Either way we had to check it out. The olive oil and olive tasting is free but I think they expect you to buy something. The variety of oils, and vinegars, and olives is super intense! It is not that cheap, a jar of olives ranges from $4 to $8 for like the blue cheese stuffed ones. If you love olives you should stop. read more

We saw a billboard on the freeway about this place. I just ran out of olive oil & wanted a new flavor of balsamic dressing. So we decided to check it out real quick and get a couple of bottles. Boy was I amazed of all the flavors! Balsamic flavors to name a few were: vanilla, chocolate, expresso, pinapple, fig, strawberry, pomegranate, mandarin and many more. Olives stuffed with: jalapeño, garlic, habenaro, capers, feta, cajon, Italian spices and more! Plus we had a great fresh sandwich from their cafe named mulfutta. I think it was there house sand. I recommend it hot. A quick stop "2 bottle" turned into $170.00 of many awesome products, which some are gifts. The prices are better than your grocery store and without the chemicals! We also had a great time wine tasting there. All the employees were genuinely friendly and helpful, including their nice mamager. We will definitely make this a must stop everytime we come this way. Avocado isn't fresh but "mashed" (i.e., from a tub). Got a whopping 7 tater tots as a side. The truly astonishing thing was the markup on the coconut water that we buy elsewhere all the time for less than half the price. For over 20 years now, I've driven Highway 5 two to three times a year on average. I've always made the Olive Pit a stopping point. Then I discovered their garlic stuffed olives. [that was the sound of my mouth watering] But this is not about their great food or products. This is about their customer service. Two visits ago (sorry for not writing sooner) I grabbed a jar of olives that had somehow gone wrong. I was disappointed, but everything else I had purchased was fine. I had even considered letting it go, but on a whim reached out to Olive Pit - quality control and all that. They were amazing, attentive and quick and efficient and handled the problem right away. We saw this place from the freeway and it did not disappoint when we stopped. The store had a wide variety of oils, olives, vinegars, tapenade, jams, and mustards to try. There was bread and gluten free rice crackers for use. It was a great snack. Around the store, there were incredible amounts of jars and shelves to look at. Bags of flavored nuts, candy, olives, balsamic vinegars, and wine were everywhere! It made our mouth water. We ended up getting the raspberry honey almonds and almost ate them in one sitting they were so good! There were also a lot of unique kitchen appliances and gadgets, but not as much bread for sale. We did not eat at the restaurant, but we purchased bottled drinks and water for the remainder of our trip just as we would do at a gas station. Each employee was incredibly happy and asked us multiple times if we needed assistance. The bathrooms are also very clean! The Olive Pit is a great "Pit" stop (pun intended). This is great stop and shop if you love olives and you're driving I-5 in northern California. The Olive pit has just about every olive type known to man. We always stop here on the way back to Portland from Southern CA and load up on Garlic olives and jalapeno olives also olive oils. Lots of parking, never over crowded.
