The restaurant itself is very small. There's a few tables indoors and benches to eat at outside. Nothing fancy but hey, you're not there for the ambiance but the bomb-ass burgers. I ordered a grilled cheese meal, sign says 6.75, added a small shake for 1.75 up charge. got charged 14.50 for the meal, 1.75 for the shake up charge and a extra 1.70 for cheese on a grilled cheese! got 1 piece of cheese between 2 hamburger buns and they think that's worth 14.50?! this place is absolutely ridiculous. My total was 17.95 for an absolutely terrible meal. When I questioned the staff I was advised that it was correct and they wouldn't do anything about it. Definitely do not recommend this place! I went to Bartel's Giant Burger to pick up dinner. I was excited as I had not been there since I was a kid. I was kind of shocked at how expensive the combo was, it was over $20.00. The burger is not giant despite its name, when compared to say the Whopper from Burger King. They did serve a very generous portion of onion rings, which makes up for the very small beverage that comes with this overpriced combo meal. I was very impressed with the food safety practices that I observed while the two young male staff members were preparing my food, they appropriately changed their gloves frequently. The food was delicious, and freshly prepared. I am just not sure it was worth over $20.00 though. read more

My second time here after three years. I wanted to come back and try it again and see if the memory of it was better than the actual experience. Here are my thoughts: The good: I arrived right at opening time on Saturday morning, so there was no one in line. The employees were friendly. My order did not take very long. My order was correct. The onion ring batter was tasty. The produce was obviously fresh. They have a doneness chart right at the register so that you can see what, for example, medium rare actually looks like when you order it. The bad: the onion rings were slightly overcooked. The meal is a little on the expensive side. A regular burger meal with cheese and avocado cost me $23. Overall, I'd say it was a decent experience, but the memory of my previous experience was better than my actual experience this time. Not sure if I would return given the price. read more

What a good burger! Freshly made when ordered. The service was friendly and they got our order correct and quickly too. Nice outdoor area to eat that is shaded and accommodates dogs. The only 2 negatives I have is portion size and LOOSE HAIR. Get the giant burger because its not even that big. The fries were served hot and fresh! The burger patty is cooked fresh. But the bun is a problem. It is a huge, cold bun that is just too much bread for the burger patty. Makes the meat seem so small. Also there was an ungodly amount of mustard on BOTH sides of the bun, and a blob of mayo. The staff is polite. read more

My first time here we were a party of 7, but they only brought out food for 6 people. Which I understand it was a big family but, when we pointed out the missing meal, they said they'd get started on it. We waited 20 minutes before I went back inside to check on the status, only to be told they forgot to make it--again. Instead of prioritizing their mistake, they continued to serve multiple tables that arrived long after us. By the time the 7th meal finally came out almost an hour had past. 6 people of the party had been done eating and were just there waiting for that one meal. We had to take it to go. Decided to give them one last chance, after numerous screw-ups, this is about my sixth time giving them a chance over the course of almost 10 years and this was the last chance they had. Drove 45 minutes out of my way to get there, as they were the only one with the shake flavor I've been looking for for about 5 days. Could barely stand in the line of people because it was almost out the door, stood there for about 22 minutes with zero movement. Headed south on Hwy 5 as fast as we could go and needed a quick dinner. It was 15 minutes to closing, so we were given only a to-go option, but staff was friendly and ready to help. Very good fries, exceptional "Giant Burger" cooked the way you request. Fries were a smaller portion for the price but cooked well. It's not cheap fast food, but it's very good food. Sorry, no photos. This place is great! I don't know how many times I've driven past. It will be a regular stop now. This is a stand alone building that may have been the location of a gas station. But the construction looks new and other than some vintage gas and oil signs included in the decor, you wouldn't know. The front has outside dining on a nice cement patio, which is covered. I ordered my usual burger with pickles and mustard only, onion rings, large chocolate malt and large Dr Pepper. They make a big deal of selecting how you want the pattie cooked, with images on a laminated sheet of each option. It wasn't crowded, so my food was prepared quickly. I could watch it being cooked, the grill and fryer are right there behind the counter. The burger was delicious, bun very fresh. Onion rings were done perfectly and almost tasted home made. The chocolate malt (the main attraction for me) was amazing and HUUUUGE! 32 ounces of sublime flavor. Plenty of malt and chocolate. Not too sweet. I could not finish it. If you are hungry and happen to be passing the signs for Corning, CA, take the exit and enjoy a wonderful example of a 1950's style burger joint that does it right. read more

It's a family run mini chain of burger roadside stops. The food is just about as you might expect, good soild burgers, but nothing fancy like organic this or that or truffel infused milkshakes or those duck fat fries. No, here you get a real basic honest burger and fries served by a country friendly staff. There outdoor dining tables when the weather is nice. The burger was tasty as were the fries. We've been traveling from Sacramento to Washington state with our dog several times recently. On our way home yesterday hunger struck as we left Redding. Bartels Giant Burger came through perfectly for us. Because it was far too hot to leave our dog in the car, we needed a shady outdoor dining area. The outdoor area here had nice tables, lots of shade and even a large fan. We ordered a Giant Burger Meal, a Giant Burger, a 1/4lb dog patty, iced tea and lemonade. They brought out a water bowl for the dog. We all loved our lunch. It can be hard to find good places to eat when traveling with a dog. We've now found someplace really good with very nice people. When we pass through Corning again we will look forward to stopping here. read more

It's a little hole-in-the-wall and a perfect stop to take a break on our way home from a Shasta black bass tournament. The parking lot is well suited for our boat trailer and/or if you have pets (the patio offers outside dining if preferred.) Stopped in at 3 pm on a Monday so no crowd. I was in the mood for a burger, fries and a milkshake. Wife in the same mood. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Restroom was spotlessly clean. This was my first time visiting Bartels burger. I was excited to try it as the reviews are good. It is a stand off the freeway which includes indoor and outdoor seating. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by the cashier. They have an amazing menu and even have these cheesecake rolls. The ambiance is pretty normal. It's a great place to grab a quick bite to eat especially for those that are driving by as it is a small truck resting city. The prices are a little over for what you get. My total was $25 with a burger, fries, and the churro bites. The burger is pretty small and the fries are a small order although I had asked for a large order. Stopped here by fluke. Looking for olive oil tasting in what the City of Corning says is the capital of olives in CA. Hmmm, more on that in a different review. Juicy, cheesy, not too greasy, solid bun to hold it all together. We had great service, ate inside and watched them take several orders, everyone had excellent service. It's old, but clean, you can wear your dirty travel clothes or garden shoes to this place, nobody would notice or care. 2 giant cheeseburgers with 1 large fry, small ice tea, regular shake (omg, the shakes are great!) cost us about 40 (with a tip) because it's not a drive through and it's clean and good. Service was awesome, both workers were so nice and helpful. They ran out of to go boxes and the girl working went out of her way to find one for us. Inside the restaurant is very homey, something we often lose amongst these corporate owned restaurants and businesses! The food was awesome! I got the giant burger meal and god damn was it worth it! If I'm anywhere near Tehama County while hungry, or think I will be, I plan on stopping at Bartels Giant Burger for a tasty bite and friendly staff for a steal. I stopped in off the freeway on my way through Tehama County hungry at sunset near closing this summer and returned on another trip a month later it was so right on. Lovely old timey vibes, not sure if 50's or 70's, but feels comfy. Lots of to go business and seating inside and under the awning outside. There was a cool group of car enthusiasts one night chillin in the lot. Counter service with a big menu board and kitchen right there in front. I had a very nice veggie burger, pretty standard patty but well cooked and any fixins you want (except probably avocado, I knew not to ask in these parts). With homemade onion rings crispy with whole onions, or with super crunchy and soft fries, you can't go wrong with the sides.
